I kept being alive for several minutes using all my l33t hunter skills. In the end I feigned death in hope I could outlast the quest that way. Eventually I gave up.... I only I had know sooner :D

For those who are familiar with this quest, you can just let yourself die pretty much instantly after you pick up the quest. My reccomendation is dying by the mobs that spawn and automatically aggro you, not killing yourself on purpose.
I tested it, and the first 5ish mobs that were attacking me killed me and I completed the quest.

Okay I've tried this twice now. I die as expected, a quest thing come up in my Objectives. Before I can click on anything, it goes to a loading screen and then I get disconnected from the server.

When I log back in, I'm at "The Maelstrom" with Deathwing there. There is nothing I can do. No one else is here. No quests, no turn-in's, nothing.

The first time I eventually hearthed home, went back to the Twilight area, abandoned the quest and flew down into the octopus thing. This let me start the quest again; however now the same thing has happened.

I'm typing this and will report to a GM as I wait for my hearthstone to cool down so I can at least get out of here.

Edit update: After speaking with a GM, it appears it was an add-on, most likely "Auctionator" that was causing the issue. After removing the add-on, it finally worked.

This is the hardest quest to complete at 90. If I hadn't looked here and remembered that I needed to die, I would have been killing those slimes for hours.

As a lvl 90 warrior with Second Wind talent Second Wind, in afterpart of this quest, I didn't "die" after breath of Deathwing and I've remained in phased Maelstorm... quite annoying (I had to leave via Hearthstone)

Not sure what to make of this one... I guess I died, then appeared where Thrall was. I clicked to complete quest from the popup in my quest menu... then that was about it. Couldn't attach Deathwing, Thrall had a yellow ? over his head but when I clicked him it said I can't do that while I'm dead. Finally hearth-stoned back to Ogrimmar. :S

Afterwhich, I was able to click it again, and was able to complete that quest and accept the one to help Thrall... of course now, I have no idea how to get back to him.

It is very poor design when the "answer" is to do the opposite of what you are instructed to do. You're told to 'survive,' but you cannot do what the quest requires of you unless you do not survive.
It's the equivalent of being told "kill 10 rats" and then you're forced to abandon and retake the quest if any rats are killed.

The follow-up quest was also bugged. I saw two Thralls, one big one small, and a Deathwing floating in the air in front of me, and the shaman lady told me I had just woken up and had to help... but I'm still on the rock with two Thralls, Aggra, and a wyvern I cannot ride.

Came in today as a lvl100 Brewmaster Monk, and it took a solid 20 minutes to die due to automatic self-heals.

...And this after I'd purposefully dropped from a good distance up on my way down.

It goes without saying, but you'll definitely wanna strip naked at max level to expedite the dying process.

This is a nightmare as a 100 druid hunter with Ysera's gift.

You can't die. You can't hearth out, because always in combat, and you can't get rid of the 4k healing every few seconds because you can't change talents while in combat.

I'm stuck down here waiting on a gm which could take days.

You are supposed to die in order to complete this quest. Make sure that you are completely naked at the moment of taking the quest because you will die a lot faster as a level 100.

I'm a hunter - level 100 and raid geared. Came back to do all the Loremaster achievements. I didn't have the forethought to check here before starting this quest....So I figured I just had to kill stuff. And I killed and I killed....After ten minutes of killing bloods, with nothing happening, I looked it up.

I was able to feign death and logout. Logging out apparently gives you just enough time to cast your mount before you are in combat again. Then fly up and out of the belly until you are out of combat and then you can strip.

Thank goodness for wowhead...spent an insane amount of time pew pewing these on my lvl 100 frost mage, only to have to look up the quest (been using the profiler to work on 'Loremaster') - currently sitting here giggling while eleventy billion slimes are attempting to lower my health....going to make tea, and come back when I'm actually dead :)

If you happened to have started the quest, have no means of dropping aggro, remove your weapons and spam sit "x"... the guaranteed crits will make it go faster.

I did this quest as a level 86 unholy death knight and was not ever in any danger of dying. Even roughly on curve it seems it is now undertuned to the point where a lot of specs probably won't die unless they intentionally suicide. I was geared with looms though, so that may have made the difference.

As a level 100. Just dismiss your pets and go afk for good 15mins. Takes a while to die. lel. If you want to speed it up. Just take off your gear.

Yes, you're supposed to die to further the quest.

No, it's not going to be easy if you, like me, didn't know that and decided to go in with your 685 tank Demon Hunter.

Yes, if you go out of the pool at the middle and aoe groups down, you can, very slowly, with quick reflexes, disrobe yourself as you get maybe a half-second of out of combat at a time.

Then you'll be able to do it.

For higher level characters, this is a tough one. You have to be killed. This is normally not possible.

Here are some potentially helpful tips.

Before entering, take off all armor and weapons. It's tough to do this after you enter the Maw because you can't change armor in combat. One way to get out of combat is to find a peaceful nook and then portal out to someplace else. Then take off all armor. Then fly back and:

Die. When flying into the Maw, change back to normal form and die from fall damage. You're half-way there!

Run around and get as many Blood of Iso'Raths to attack you at the same time. The Fire Elementals will still protect you but the more the merrier. Eventually (after 10 minutes or so) you will get killed.

Don't forget to put your armor back on :)

How to die as lvl 110 in 2 minutes:

1. Remove you equip, fly in and dismount, taking the fall dmg. If you survive, immediately engage in combat and follow step 2. If you die, release, fly there as a ghost and revive as high as you can. You will take smaller fall dmg but since you just released, you should be at cca 17 % HP after the fall. Immediately engage in combat.
2. The NPCs stack quite fast but they miss a lot. What you need to do is to turn your back at them and spam /sit. Your HP goes down increasingly fast as more and more NPCs stack.

If you find yourself reading these comment right after you started the quest and don't know a way to die while you are already down with lots of life, here is what i did as an 110 Blood DK....First abandoned the quest then went to the side of the room, where you can walk up a path....mobs won't follow you up there...you can walk up to a specific point, can't exit through there but as mobs wont follow, you will be out of fight every now and then, just enough to remove one item at a time, then you can jump down, which should get your life down to around 50%....luckily the upside part of you are always in fight is that you won't heal while running up again and jumping one more time which will get you (it got me) to 17% life, then just retake the quest, gather some mobs, turn your back on them and just spam "X" (sit) untill you are dead.

There is a small ramp in the southern part of the room, you can run up and then jump down, taking considerable falling damage on any lvl character. Gravity on our side, finally.

SPECIAL NOTE FOR WARLOCKS!

The way I finally got this to work (as a 110 destruction lock) was strip naked, lifetap as low as possible, then (here's the critical point) keep turning off Soul Leech. If it's active, the mobs can't hurt you. So just keep turning it off. Once I did this, took me about 3 minutes to die.

Complete as max level (please read and whole post, some things can be class specific)

!You must die to complete the quest

1. Remove all clothes & Pets!
3. Engage the battle Naked!
2. Make macro "/sit" and spam it as mobs hits you.

Yes, spam the skill from your skill-bar like a madman (not even joking at this point!)
That's how I got the blobs to finally kill me and could complete this!

2. "Make sure to untalent any talents that give you back X percent health every X seconds if below a certain percentage. Had Nature's Guardian on my Shaman and it kept healing 20 percent of my ~25k health pool every 45 seconds."

Same problem as some of you with being too high a level. Level 110 ilvl 860+. Tried to take off my gear but couldn't due to being in combat. I abandoned the quest "Devoured", then hearthed to Dalaran, portaled to SW, then portaled to twilight highlands, took off all gear and flew back down into the maw. Accepted "Devoured" again. With all gear off I still had 375K health. I'm now down to 250K after about 15 minutes. So it looks like I'll be able to complete it after all. Hope this helps with those of you who are going back to do this quest at high level.

One tip for all high level toons (above 90). First take all armor and weapons. Die and resucitate with the angel. Head toward the shaman and take the quest. Then, climb the ramp and jump. Do it several times until your health is about 2k HP and let yourself die from the blops. It work on my fury warrior ilvl 888.

Advice for high level Warlocks:

Besides taking off all your armor (rez sickness is optional but not necessary if you choose to jump off the cliff a couple of times), make sure that you haven't chosen Demon Skin as the Tier 5 talent. That talent literally make this quest impossible to complete.

Completed at 110 as a NE balance druid.
You are SUPPOSED to die.

Make sure you do not have restoration affinity active.
Remove clothing and weapons
Shadowmeld. Fly up. Fall and die.
Get rez sickness.
Fly back. Land in the encounter.
Stand and let them hit you. When I landed I was at 54% and it took them about 5-7 mins to kill me. The NPCs make it even more difficult to die by attacking the mobs and healing you so try not to stand in the center.

Doing Loremaster. Oh my god, killed blobs for about 10 minutes then finally looked this up. As a 120 Guardian Druid it was really tough to die. I took off all my gear (ilvl 340+), died, rezzed with rez sickness, flew in and dropped from a height, and still had to jump off the ledge a few times. Spammed /sit (X key) and still couldn't die. Had to turn off the resto affinity and redo the whole process. Finally died and then there was a bug with Thrall and Deathwing! Couldn't move on with The Terrors of Iso'rath quest. Logged out and in - no good. I reported the bug and will wait to see what happens.

If you have the Tosselwrench's Mega-Accurate Simulation Viewfinder you save a lot of time. You can buy it from the Cataclysm Timewalker vendor in Orgrimmar or Stormwind for Timewarped Badge x3000.

Edit: Make sure to use it right after you accept the quest because you need to be out of combat. So, have it prepared.

COMPLETED AT LEVEL 120

Before you even start, get the hell out of there, go to Stormwind or Orgrimmar and get back into Twilight Highlands, and fly up and kill yourself as quickly as possible.

Take ressurection sickness, and then proceed to take off all your clothes, i don't care in what order you do this.

If you are a tank, change specc to some dps or healer because you will have lower health pool. I was blood DK, and i wen't from 300k to 5000.

Fly back into that god awful mess of a hole in the ground, try to position yourself so that you will take fall damage when you unmount in the air, but don't let the fall damage kill you.

Aggro the mobs with your fists before your health starts regenerating and use the /sit command or binding to sit while they kill you.

Iso'rath is one of the most terrifying creatures i have ever faced in this game... so many evading mobs, so bad quest design, i hate everything about this quest.

Going to add an update for any characters at max level (I myself completed this as a 120 hunter); if you find yourself locked in combat where you can't take off your gear, there's a spot in the center that's burning. Stand there and let the fire and mobs do the rest. Shouldn't take very long at all. :)

What a troublesome quest...

I did understood immediately that death was actually intended, and being a Gnome Warlock lvl 93 with %^&*ty gear made that part quite easy.

I went down to 1%, and a loading screen came up. With no loading progression whatsoever. No way around but to force quit the game and restart it. I spawned in the maw where I was to be killed again, and so then a new loading screen. The loading did started this time, but stopped at 70%.

Restarted the game again, and again, and at last the loading screen progressed to 100% and I spawned on the intended location for turning in the quest. And guess what, clicking on the 'Complete quest'-button did nothing. I relogged, and still did nothing. So I went to the quest log and abandoned the quest from there, hoping that it would help.
It did not, but it left me alone and abandoned in a location - an island - where no mounts are allowed, and invisible walls surrounds the isle making me unable to go anywhere. Perfect place to be with no heartstone in the bags.

Completed as a level 120 Protection Paladin with 455 ilvl WITHOUT taking any of my gear off, or taking res sickness and here's how:
Go in normally, when the event starts, just move out of the totem areas and the friendly NPCs and outside the pool thingy, I stood on 43, 13 coordinates, the blobs just gathered on me and started to damage me heavily, with 600k HP gone in less than a minute.
Don't bother with Res sickness or taking your gear off. Maybe taking your weapons off while in combat is a good idea, also removing all the beneficial buffs from yourself every time you get them, like protective shields or healing buffs.

You don't need to remove your gear or kill yourself for rez sickness, just keep clicking off any buffs your gear or passive spellls provide and you'll die easily enough. Works fine for a 475 Priest still wearing Twilight Dev pants, just stand there off to the side.

spent 30 minutes 1 shotting everything until i realized you have to die, nice.
just stand there, and take the beats to complete this quest, eventually youll die no matter who you are.
just make sure any shields or buffs your gear is proc'in for you gets right clicked off.

edit: you can leave your gear on, you wont take durability loss.

As of Pre patch, this quest is no longer working.

Ive died over 10 times, in different ways and thrall is never spawning. You just die like normal and are forced to rez.

Reported it as a bug, and tried to make a ticket. But nothing has happen yet.

Really nice of blizz to break more things, so one has even less stuff to do while waiting for actual content ^^

As of patch 9.0 (shadowlands pre-patch) all you have to do is, after accepting the quest, kill the adds that spawn for a couple of minutes until there's 3 or more spawning at a time, and then, let them kill you (take all your gear out, except weapons for example). Also, what I did was, using single target abilities, kill some right before dying, dont know if its necessary but that worked for me.

I was able to complete this today (finally!) on my shadow priest. I took rez sickness and then continued to use Shadow Word: Death until I got to 1% and the cutscene triggered. It took me about 15 attempts, but finally got there in the end!

I went in with ressickness and all gear OFF. Pulled many blobs, made sure I was standing within the quest area (blue circle on minimap) - And single target killed the blobs for 5 minutes, then melee'd until they killed me.

Had to do this 7 times before the quest finally triggered like it should once you die.

So if you are struggling with this quest, keep spamming the quest, it will work... eventually...

Ok. So if you are level 45 and above and failed to finish this quest because you think its bugged (prolly is), here is the trick. Unequipped all your gears (except weapon, you gonna need it later) before you descend and take the quest. Just stand there and afk for a few minutes and let the blobs hit you until you reach at least 2-3% HP. After you reach 2-3% HP, reduce the numbers of blobs. You can AOE until a few remains. If there's a lot, keep AOEing. Whatever remains, let them hit you again until you reach 1% HP. Then it should trigger the next phase of the quest and you are done.

The easy way: there's a ramp along the edge of the room. Walk up the ramp and take fall damage until you're low. Then, just let the mobs slowly whittle you down .1% at a time. Only reason I died once was because I took too much fall damage XD. GLHF.

Just did this quest today at level 60 (max level right now). You have to die from the blobs to complete the quest and if you're top level, they won't do enough damage. We solved the issue by running up the ramp on the south side and jumping off until we damaged ourselves to ALMOST dead. Then run to the middle and allow the blobs to kill you. Worked without an issue. BTW, you're in constant combat so you can't ungear, and it seems you can't get out of the pit without hearthing either, so this was out solution, lol.

Here's what you do as of Shadowlands. Start the quest, then get yourself killed with the ramp on the south side. Fly back to your corpse, rez at max height and take fall damage. Mount again, fall again, mount again, fall again until you are at 5% health or so. Then wait for a bunch of blobs to spawn and kill you BUT MAKE SURE YOU ARE STANDING IN THE QUEST AREA OF THE MINIMAP, AND MAKE SURE THERE IS A BUNCH OF ORANGE CRAP ALL OVER THE GROUND. As soon as I did this, I got credit and mvoed on.

As of today - June 5 2021 - this quest is still a nightmare to complete. The in-game support has a section dedicated to this quest. They recommend going in with no gear and getting rez sickness. I've died to given myself rez sickness THREE TIMES. I still have not triggered the quest when I reach 1%. I've died, had to fly back and start the process over again for nearly 30 minutes.

I have tried:
- taking fall damage and then getting killed by the mobs
- jumping off the ramp until I die
- jumping off the ramp then running into the mobs to kill me
- getting rez sickness, taking slight fall damage, then dying to mobs
- getting rez sickness and dying to mobs

This quest seems extremely buggy and inconsistent. If you plan on trying to complete it, plan on being here trying out different strategies and hoping rng will be in your favor, triggering the Thrall portion at 1%.

My Enhance Shaman was lvl 43 with 42 ilvl:

Right! after following a couple of the tips here to no avail I started killing the slow moving mobs around the outer edges while at 1% health (wasnt hard - I just let blob hit stacks build up. (They miss alot at my lvl but enough of em and they get a good amount of hits in). Then while still on the outer edges I died and the event completed. The Worldbreaker popped-up and screen started to fade so I let it do so.
You then appear in the Maelstrom with Deathwing and Thrall moaning at me calling me a useless shaman for not helping lol. You can't target Deathwing, you just have to let the NPC noobs die :D and u will complete it.
Then you get another pop-up quest The Terrors of Iso'rath which you will have to HS and go back to Twilight Highlands again for.

Patch 9.1, had to do this four times but eventually got it. Took all the gear off, got the res sickness, reduced HP by flying and falling, accepted the Q around 10% HP and then let the oozes finish me off. This quest was a true nightmare.

First time commenting here, had a hard time with this one.

This quest which requires you to die works kinda fine as of Sept. 2nd 2021, a bit hard to die here, be naked, you can jump a bit on the southern part of the room to take extra damage. Also think about getting every thing that can heal you aside (Talents, conduits and so on).

Once you die you get rez'd by Thrall onto the next quest (you can submit it with the quest tracking tool) but this one is also bugged, I couldn't see anything so I opened a ticked which led to nothing (aside from automatic answers, I guess). I ported out, abandonned the quest "The Worldbreaker" then went back to where I died to the slimes, got rez'd again and Thrall was there ! I took his quest and waited.

At the end of the rp, there were 2 Thralls (a big one and a lil' one), some npc's were dead and also alive, it was a mess. I could submit the quest, got the next one "The terrors of Iso'rath" but no way out.

Same thing here ported out, abandonned the quest, came back to the pit and I could take the quest back, and finish the chain as I would normally do.

Doing all of this was very tiring with all of those deaths and porting, but I hope that you guys can achieve your loremaster by doing it the same as I did :D

as of 3rd September 2021 I actually managed to die in about 5 minutes to them full armor as 249 ilvl monk with the max hp healing conduit. According to my crane stacks weakaura at some point I had basically 40 of them attacking me at once. So I think you should be just able to wait it out, just go grab a cup of coffee or something :)

Here's a tip for Shadowlands Hunters: turn off Condensed Anima Sphere conduit before starting this or you'll never die.

Druid, 60, iLvl 225(0), could not die at all. Naked, with ressurection sickness, Anima Salvage conduit disabled and still - my regen was way too much for the Blob's damage.

The culprit was the 30th level talent Restoration Affinity, that gives you passive skill Ysera's Gift. After disabeling it the quest was doable quite easily.

This quest is a nightmare as a max level character (Shadowlands)! I had to abandon it several times until it worked.

What I did (I hope it helps):
1. Dismounted high in the air in order to die.
2. Ressed at the cemetery and got ressurection sickness.
3. Made a /sit macro and put it on my bars.
4. Got naked. Watch out for any talents or covenant powers that heals you (like the Condensed Anima Sphere)!
5. Went back inside of the Maw of Madness and mounted/dismounted until I was around 10% health. You can also use the ledges around the room to jump down and make your health drop.
6. Went to the middle, to the blue area of the quest in the mini map and let the blobs hit me while I spammed the /sit macro (you'll eventually have a bunch of them around you).
7. When I reached around 3% health I killed all the mobs around me.
8. I repeated step 6. When I reached 3% health again, I waited until the floor was orange near the elemental and let the blobs hit me until I reached 1% health.

At that moment, Thrall teleported me to The Maelstrom and the quest The Worldbreaker appeared. I accepted it and just waited until all the NPC's died. Thrall even called me useless (I was since I couldn't hit Deathwing or do anything really).

Then the next quest The Terrors of Iso'rath appeared. I accepted it and used my hearthstone.
Went back to Twilight Highlands and finished the quest.

I don't guarantee you will get the quest at first (I didn't) but keep trying. I got it eventually.

Tried doing this quest as of 9.1.. the only thing that worked for me was: Removing my gear and covenant soulbind/conduits. I was mounted before picking up the quest. As soon as I picked up the quest I flew into the air and when I was at a decent height I dropped down. after that I made sure to be in the blue circle on the mini-map and let the mobs kill me.

I had about 10 tries before it finally worked. I think I kept failing because of resurrection sickness. as soon as I didn't have that anymore the quest worked for me.

Per other comments, I waited for the quest to automatically end upon my death, but only after several deaths did I think to look at the upper right hand of my screen and see I had to click the "complete quest" button instead of just hitting the rez button.

Oopsie.

That was a lot of getting wailed on whist buck naked.

Even though the quest says to survive, you have to let the mobs kill you. Make sure that you are standing in the marked area when you die. If you look on your mini map, you will see where you have to stand (inside the neon blue marked area). If you're max level, you're going to have to go in naked so the mobs can kill you, but you also need to get some hits to target them in order for the quest to complete, so keep your weapon equipped as auto-attack and pet attacks won't count. I don't think this quest is bugged anymore and the trick is just to target some mobs and to make sure you're standing in the marked area on your mini map.

As of Shadowlands, this is essentially impossible at maximum level - at least, it was for me (level 60 hunter). I gave myself res sickness and took off all my gear, but the mobs could not damage me at all. I tried chucking myself off the ledge until I had the barest sliver of health - they still could not kill me. Killing myself by jumping off the ledge did not complete the quest. I gave up after multiple tries.

If you are at max level, don't pull your hair out. I opened up a ticket, and within a few hours, they marked this quest (and the follow-up) as complete, so I could continue. Here's the response I got:

Thanks for taking the time to contact me with your issue, I know your time is valuable.

I understand you were having some trouble completing the quest Devourer.

I did some digging into this and do see that we're aware of the issues being able to complete the quest at higher levels. We don't have an ETA on when this will be fixed yet, but I was able to get you fixed up so you could continue with the questline. Devourer and The Worldbreaker have been marked complete and you should be able to accept The Terrors of Iso'rath from here.

We give Blizzard grief when they have missteps, but I'd like to thank them here for a prompt response allowing me to continue on the quest-line.

I did this quest as a Necrolord DH.

Getting the demon proc from Fodder to the Flame, and letting it kill me, worked fine for the quest completion :)

Just completed this quest as a 60 Druid with SL Ilvl 257 gear. When you accept the quest, go stand next to the fire elemental that is being summoned. Do not attack anything. Simply let the mobs continue to stack and attack. It took about 10 minuets in total (had a couple of self-heals proc during the encounter). Once your HP reaches roughly 2% the encounter ends, the quest completes and is clickable in your quest tracker. You will then be teleported out upon completion. GL and I hope this helps any other would be Lore Masters out there!

Lvl 60 Hunter - party sync does not work. I went back to my sanctum and switched to an empty tree (so no healing buffs), took off all of my gear, flew down into the hole to where the teeth stopped and clicked my mount off... other wise would have taken FOREVER. I still had to run up the ledge an jump off once. Then go stand in the fire in the water. You need to actually hit some of the blobs. First attempt with this strategy was just standing there, I died, but quest did not complete since I did not hit anything back. Really hope this helps someone that is stuck.

If you are playing at max level you may have to move occasionally so you do not get disconnected for inactivity

Since previous comments this quest must have been changed because all the adds were level 59 for me as a level 60. I thought it was a bug at first and killed them all for a while until so many spawned that I just couldn't keep myself alive. I had no idea I was supposed to die. Quite a rush when doing "trivial" content for achievements.

I did it in Dragonflight and the bloods came out and smacked me for 23-29k damage a hit. No need to cheese anything, just wait around for a few seconds.
