Actually, there's a trick to the fight. Easily solo'd as a retribution paladin in build 12857. There are three "gimmicks" you have to overcome.

1) Flame Waves: Every so often, Rag will submerge and unleash a Sartharion style flamewave. This is VERY slow and easy to avoid.

2) Bombs: The floor with be covered in little spell graphics that are essentially weak bombs that knock you back and up pretty far. Avoid to maximize attack time.

3) Assisting NPCs: Malfurian and Hammul each put a 200% damage debuff on the boss (one physical, one magical), and these are crucial for killing Rag before Cenarius dies. Every so often, Rag will summon little minions to attack them. If you do not kill these minions, then the NPCs will drop their debuff and weakly attack these minions. The minions are weak and easy enough to kill, so make them your absolutely priority for damage and this fight will be cake.

Any pet class should be able to send their pet after one fire elemental while running and killing the other fire elemental themselves. My devilsaur was able to easily dispatch an add by himself while I kited the other back to the middle.

Pro tip of the day: if you're a priest, don't Shadow Word: Death with Malfurion's debuff active. Even talented I got hit with a 70k backlash and had to re-do the quest.

Just a quick note for those of you who are having trouble even getting to this quest: you MUST complete all 3 quest chains that deal with the area around Sulfuron Keep before you can pick up this quest. The only one you should have any chance of missing is The Twilight Egg quest (The Twilight Egg).

Failure to start that quest chain will result in this quest being unavailable for completion. Good luck to you all!

You're a spectator for this fight, but you're an ACTIVE spectator. Basically, you're going to be asked to either heal Cenarius while he fights Ragnaros, or to DPS the Flame Elementals who will periodically attack Malfurion and Hammul so 'they' can heal Cenarius. (And with Cenarius' Gi-normous health bar, you're going to want them to stay on healing...)

During the fight, a wall of flame will cascade forward. You may be able to skirt around the right or left edge to avoid it, but I got caught with nowhere to hide a couple of times, and it didn't do a tremendous amount of damage. (The fact that I was almost on top of Malfurion may have helped. Dunno for certain.) This is a bit much for even a well-geared 81-82 to solo, but two well-geared players should be able to knock it out easily--assuming each takes responsibility for the adds on one of the two peninsulas that bracket the area where Ragnaros and Cenarius square off. Kill the Fire Elementals quickly, stay alive, and don't take too long, just in case there really IS an enrage timer.

Oh, and if you find you're standing around waiting, for what seems like a really, really long time, go back to the entrance and see if the NPCs arrived when you weren't looking. You need to speak to Cenarius to start the actual fight.

Did this easily as a pretty poorly geared 82 Frost Mage - avoid @#$%, kill adds, and pewpew Raggy - Cenarius was at around 4.3Mil health, and I was at 30% mana when we were done. Popped cooldowns when Raggy was at about 6mill.

If you talk to Cenarius just inside the portal (on the circle) he'll wait for his two buddies, they'll talk, and you'll walk down and engage Ragnaros. Ragnaros sometimes is bugged when he is already up. If he's not bugged, he'll eventually come out of a grey vortex in the pool and start yelling at everyone before he can be engaged.

Let Cenarius tank a little (don't make the first move or you'll be one-shot). Cenarius will stand in the center facing Ragnaros, and the other two druids will be on a platform on the left (Runetotem) and right (Malfuron) of the square lava pool. Eventually, you'll join in and start fighting Ragnaros, and you'll stay on Ragnaros UNLESS two things happen: (1) when high flame waves come, you'll run (away, please, or you will die if you try to cross them); and (2) when Firelords start chasing down and hitting Runetotem and Malfurion, you'll go help Malfurion first so he can heal Cenarius, whose health he can heal, then help Runetotem with his Firelords. When the Firelords are down on both sides, resume your fight on Ragnaros.

The fight is rather slow and if Cenarius dies there is a chance that you, Malfurion and Runetotem can continue to rid Mt. Hyjal of evil Ragnaros. If not, it's like Blizzard knows you can't do it, and so everyone just disappears and the clock is reset again, and if that happens, just go back to the portal and wait for Ragnaros to go away and Cenarius to come again.

I thought this was instanced but some guy came in and we finished it together which was nice. It took a few tries to get it done but it's nice seeing and pretty epic, as you all probably knew.

For anyone else who was confused where "the portal" is (duh, shouldnt you realize where Sanctum of the Prophets is, even though it's not named and isnt on the map? :)), it's the same blue portal that you go through for all the other inside-the-fire-place quests, located at >55, 66<.
I soloed it as an 82 demo warlock (still in ICC 25 gear) with no problems. The other posters are correct in saying you dont really need to do much to Rag yourself (I threw a few dots when the adds werent up), just kill the two fire elementals when they pop (popped twice for me). I initially stuck my felguard on one while I went to kill the other, but didnt put any dots on it as I ran by and the pet bit the dust. I never got aggro off the two 'helper' NPCs, so I just nuked my head off, then ran back to the other side and killed the other one myself. Second time they spawned, I dotted the one I sent the pet after and he handled it with no problem (theyve got standard HP for the zone, 37k-ish). Fight took 3-4 minutes, Cenarius was never below 50% HP, and I ended at 70% mana. I could have made it a shorter fight if I'd have nuked Rag in the downtime, but I was playing it cautious because I didnt know how many elementals I'd need to take out. The flame wall was a joke - the one time I happened to be near the edge, I ran off to avoid it but the other two times I just kept nuking and it did negligible damage.

You don't need to talk to Cenarius if the event has already started, you will get credit and complete quest as long as you are inside when Ragnaros is defeated.

The portal you need to use is in the twilight camp near Azralon the Gatekeeper (for those without coordinate addons), unlike other portal quests this one doesn't show question mark on map.

Pretty easy; let Cenarius do the tanking; run back up the ramp when the lava waves come and go after the elementals (I only killed one each time) when they show up - Cenarius will prompt you to go kill them.

Once you down the elemental, go back to dpsing Rag. There were 3 lava waves in my fight. I kept my croc on passive and sent him in to kill the elementals and to snap at Rag when my croc was at full health. I'd pull him back out and heal him when he got to half health. Probably didn't need my pet to down Rag, but he likes to get into the fray. ;)

This quest is so EPIC! Your participating in a showdown between the night elf demi-god (Cenarius) and the most powerful mortal druids to ever live (Malfurion and Runetotem) attempting to stop one of the coolest raid bosses in WoW. PLUS, its fully voice-acted by the original Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos voice actors of Furion and Cenarius! Lastly, its setting up a future raid to fight Ragnaros ourselves by Furion stating that we need to kill Ragnaros in the future!
...sry, just had a bit of a fan-gasm there... haha.

I just tried this quest and it said completed but not sure what I did wrong because I am unsure what to do next. CENARIUS died during the fight and after it said complete I ran back up the ramp and thru the portal. Was I suppose to wait for one of the other 2? I flew back to where I got the quest but not sure what to do next and there is nobody instructing me as to what to do or where to go? Does anyone have any ideas as to what I did wrong? Please help, and thanks.

It took a party of my 84 pally and 85 warrior to do this quest. Unfortunately, I couldn't heal Cenarious. We each took a side to take out the elementals. It took three times for us to figure this quest out. We stood right in Cenarious way, took out Rag. This should really be a group quest.

I suspect this quest might be a bit different with mixed-up priorities if you're playing a class that can heal, or maybe if you're in a group. Pure DPS classes should have no problem - I've done this on my mage and my rogue, and both times it was easy, just DPS down the adds when they spawn and avoid the flames.

The adds are your absolute number one priority - if you don't get their attention and take them out fast, Malfurion and Runetotem will get distracted, drop their debuffs, and Cenarion will probably die. I think Ragnaros has some sort of enrage timer, and if the druids' buffs aren't up almost constantly, Cenarion won't be able to do enough damage to take him down fast enough.

Other than that it's pretty straightforward - avoid the flame walls and the bombs on the ground when they spawn, and DPS on Ragnaros when you're not doing something more important. Definitely soloable and groups not required.

As an aside, the damage buff that you get during this quest is absolutely insane - my Deep Freeze crit for over 720,000 at one point...

A word of warning to all shadow priests doing this quest - DO NOT USE SHADOW WORD: DEATH.

Ragnaros will be debuffed with a 2000% increased magic damage taken. However, YOU will not have any defensive buffs. A SW:D will effectively do about 70k (210k below 25%) and you will end up oneshotting yourself.

Learned the hard way.

Notes:
For some reason this is an auto-accept quest.

Healing - you don't need to do any healing. You can DPS down Ragnaros quite well with Cenarius and the others buffing your damage. You do need to fight the adds attacking the others. As long as they are channeling on the boss, you get your damage bonus.

If you get there late and Ragnaros is already dead, it's a 3 minute wait for the event to reset. (game says 2 minutes, but Cenarius doesn't spawn for an additional minute)

that is, took the portal back, but the island was empty of npcs, couldn't hand it in.

flying through the portal to the inner spire and back out again fixed it though.

Cenarious died while I was doing it, but I was able to finish him off. I turned it in to Commander Jarad Shadowsong, and Cenarious is standing right there next to him. Not bugged today.

So tell me how you can possibly be in two places at once, avoiding bombs and the fire waves? I just got my butt handed to me, despite rag having those debuffs and despite me being on one side while an elemental spawned on the other as i was killing one on the npc.

This is far easier in a group, and if like me your a warrior, and have absolutely no way to defend two positions which are miles apart then grab a group or more than very likely die trying.

82 holy pally...i've done this quest before and it was not that hard...today i've died three times in a row...i do what i'm supposed to...i attack rag and kill off the elementals attacking the hamull and yet cenarius keeps dying on me...i try healing him but i do like 1 or 2 percent with each major heal and run out of mana...did they make this quest impossible with this most recent update or am i just being an idiot?

edit - i tried switching to retribution...same result...cenarius takes too much damage and my healing is like a drop in the bucket...very frustrating

How do i do this? Ive wiped 3x because it keeps telling me to heal cenarius and when he has multiple million hp my wimpy 12-20k heals are next to nothing and i just keep dying. any advice?

As of the new patch (April 26th 2011) there seems to be either a bug in this event causing Cenarius to die real fast, or they amped the thing up and made it nearly impossible. Cenarius is now dieng in less than 90 seconds whether you get those elementals or not! GM ticket is pending.......

For some reason mid-fight, Cenarius randomly dies and hits the player.
"Ragnaros's melee swing hits **** for 43817 Physical.(1450040 Overkill)"

Instantly killing the player and ending the gauntlet.

Edit: Blizzard added Berserk to Rag making it impossible at the moment to complete.

Ragnaros gains Ragnaros's Berserk.
Ragnaros casts Berserk.
Cenarius's Icecrown's Chill fades from Cenarius.
Cenarius died.

I dodged about 4 or 5 attacks using evasion.

did this as a 82 ret pally with an 82 boomkin helping. took 5 tries by myself to get him to low healthj with me dpsing only the melee add down and healing every time i had full mana. got rag to 10% and finally found some 1 else on the quest. one shotted it but still had to heal and cenarius was at like 5% when rag died. Definatly a group quest now even though we were both dpsing and healing between phases.

On my lvl 83 Enhancement Shaman:

Ragnaros gains Ragnaros's Berserk.
Ragnaros casts Berserk.
Ragnaros's melee swing hits Cenarius for 54861 Physical.(1305826 Overkill).
Cenarius died.
Ragnaros's attack was parried by Stonesmasher.
Ragnaros's melee swing hits Stonesmasher for 60140 Physical.(1051865 Overkill).

While i was able to solo the quest pre-4.1 easily on even worse geared and lower level chars :(

Edit: GM just confirmed that theres been a mix-up somewhere and Ragnaros in the Mount Hyjal quest got a buff he shouldn't have gotten. They are working on a hotfix to remove it. In the mean time he couldnt help me kill Ragnaros so just have to leave the quest till its fixed.

I'm having an issue completing this quest. I've tried it 6 different ways all ending in the same result. I've followed everyone elses comments and still cannot get Cenarious's friends to do anything but target Rag. I've done all the quests leading up to this one, I've targeted both elementals and killed them, avoided flames, gone up the ramp, avoided bombs. But nothing I do seems to matter because even if I kill the elemental adds the healer will not heal Cenarious. He does nothing but stand there. I've tried healing him myself but no use. What am I doing wrong? I'm tired of getting one-shotted.

As of 4.1 this appears to be bugged and not able to be beaten. I attempted it 7 times today before I finally gave up. Every time after the 3rd time he submerges, he comes up and immediately starts 1 shotting people. First Cenarius, then me, then Malfurion, and finally Hamuul.

Hi,

I've been trying to do this quest for 2 days in a row now, and I can't complete it. I've read the comments and tips from other players but somehow i manage to not complete the quest, got to mention that the quest is not marked as fail when i die or Cenarius dies.

Any way, i go thru the portal, speak to cenarius, the fight begins, I defeta the elementals attacking Runetotem and Malfurion, and the Cenarius asks me to heal him.... Im a prot pally lvl 82 (atm). If i get to close to ragnaros i instantly die, and i can only attack him with judgement, avenger shield, holy wrath and thats about it.... also, How do I heal Cenarius? Is the quest bugged? Am I missing something? I've done all quests in Mount Hyjal.

Hope you guys can help out.

I've tried this quest twice now, and on both occasions Cenarius and his buddies randomly disappear when ragnaros gets down to about 10 mil. The "battle for mount hyjal" timer on the top of the screen resets to 2 minutes but ragnaros is still there. So I waited the full 2 minutes and Cenarius respawned at the portal. I went to re-initate the fight and we walked up ro ragnaros (who was still at 10M) and they just stood there and did nothing. Has this happened to anyone else?

This was my third toon to do this quest. I didn't have proplems with Cenarius dying due to the rage buff, but for whatever reason, following the third lava wave, all NPC's would despawn except ragnaros. I tried it 4 times and the same thing happened. Hope they put a HotFix on it soon. It's such a fun quest.

i had same thing happen despawned npcs but i was outside attack range and just used ranged attacks it took like twenty minutes but i killed him probably took that long ecause im a retribution paladin.

Absolutely atrocious quest for a melee class, having to constantly chase down the adds makes this 'fight' quite harder than it should be, further exaggerated by Cenarius' inability to deal any damage whatsoever, the fact that Malfurion Stormrage and Hamuul Runetotem can't kill a lesser fire elemental by themselves baffles me.

If most of your damage is physical simply stick to the left side, assist Hamuul Runetotem when necessary and focus on Raggy while dodging the lava waves.

Overall I'd suggest doing the quest with at least one other player.

Cenarius just dies. Every time.

Doesn't matter target priority (kill adds, ignore adds, ignore Stormage/protect Runetotem).

The bombs and flame wave are non-issues. It's just that Cenarius dies too fast.

The support NPCs don't seem to significantly heal Cenarius at all for me during the flame wave/adds.

I feel like I'm going to have to sit around and wait for someone else to do it and just tag along.

I give this quest a 2 / 10 rating. As a priest I shadow word: death killed myself because of the npc buff and the resulting backfire damage, as an enh shaman I just stood in front of him, when the quest started, got instant killed by doing nothing and the same thing once again after he emerged because Cenarius doesn't constantly hold aggro - even when I *again* did nothing.

They tried to make this a good quest but failed in execution. The only thing they need to make sure is that players don't get instantly killed while Cenarius is alive. *disappointed face*

Edit: Also Cenarius can't keep the aggro even if I hold back with damage in my quest greens and blues *facepalm*
Oh my, oh my... Needs to be improved.

i first did this quest with my lock, finished it with no problems, defend the 2 druids, deal some damage, easy

today i tried with my pally ...

first time, Cenarius goes in front of Ragnaros i use Judgement and after 1 second i die (not from waves or fire mines) - i ressurect - go back through the portal (the battle was still going) so ofc this time i don't damage Ragnaros again thinking it will kill me - after he drops at 10% Cenarius disappears and i get the message The battle to free Hyjal will start in 0:30 .... and the quest not completed

I start the quest again after 30 seconds, fight the looong fight, i get Ragnaros at 10% again ... the same bug .... Cenarius and the other 2 druids disappear ....

As others have said, this one is actually rather easy. I thought it was going to be more difficult with my 82 Arms Warrior, since as a melee class it can get a little confusing while dpsing up close with everything else going on. Based on the suggestions above, rather than melee Ragnaros I stayed by Malfurion and hit Ragnaros with my ranged shot just to get in a few licks, then ran up the ramp to about the second step to avoid the lava wave, returning immediately to Malfurion to take care of the Fire Elemental, and then resuming ranged dps. I ignored whatever was happening to Hamuul. After three cycles the battle was all over.

I can confirm that whatever bugs have been introduced since release have been fixed. I just completed this on my mage and it was no harder than when i did it on my paladin one day after release.

Simply follow the big blinking instructions and you won't have any problems.

People saying the bug has been fixed are wrong, just tried it on my pally and the same infuriating one shot before cenarius shield, happened TWICE.

Given up on it for now.

just did this solo as a boomkin. I kept the dots on him and zap the adds really quick and back to dmg ragnaros. Completed the first time.

I had trouble trying to complete this on my paly because of no ranged. I am sure it can be done with any class as long as you kill the adds and dps on rag.

Hamuul is thoughtful enough to open a portal back out to Hyjal for you once Ragnaros is down, so you needn't waste your Hearthstone cooldown.

As a warning, stand out of ragnaros's meele range at the first moment of the fight. He becomes active a moment before cenrius, and my poor rogue was standing close-by, ready for the kill...

He hit me for 45K (110K overkill)

A moment after my death Cenarius came active and got his healing/fire resiest buff, I got resed at the GY and ran back and got credit.

Also if you find it difficult to kill both adds before he re-submerges, you don't have too. Kill the add that is attacking the NPC that gives your buff. So, if your a warrior, you should only focus on killing the Physical debuff NPC. as the magical one doesn't help you a lot.

I spent most of the time running back up towards the portal to avoid the lava. Kinda funny. Didn't even have time to go help kill the elementals. Did manage a few shots at Ragnaros between lava floods.

DO NOT stand in front of Ragnaros at the beginning of the fight! He will kill you instantly and you will have to start the quest over. Stand back from him or to the side.

For all that is holy in the world-- DON'T use your Touch of the Void when he's about to send the waves. When he gets back, he will target the void tendrils instead of Cenarius, which will make Cenarius, Hamuul and Malfurion despawn, leaving you alone to deal with Ragnaros. It happened to me twice as he was below 15%. It wasn't pretty for me, and I had to re-do everything, including the roleplay.

I had to put in a ticket about this last night because it's still very broken. The GM got back to me and let me know they know it's broken and they auto-completed it for me. They also asked for more bug reports and it kinda sounds like they have no idea why it's broken. That's just what I got out of it anyway.

I was running my newest Lightforged hunter and Void Elf rogue through it and I had my pet on passive and would have it come back to me as soon as Ragnaros submerged. There should have been nothing there for Ragnaros to switch his focus to, yet after 5+ minutes of the battle, all the helpful npcs despawned anyway. I'd been running to help the npc the game was telling me to help, running to avoid the lava, and staying out from in front of Ragnaros.

Cenarius would eventually respawn in the back by the portal and I could activate him again, but he and the other two would stop walking at the point where the other two would break off and they just stood there watching me do next to no damage to Ragnaros at all until they finally despawned again.

I ran through this a few weeks ago with basically the same outcome, but my hunter was able to slowly but surely chip away at Ragnaros until he died. Took... forever. Last night I could only get him down to about 26% and he finally despawned as well, resetting the whole thing. I didn't try again.

Pretty much any character or pet that got close to Ragnaros was one shot, almost like he wasn't really looking at Cenarius.

Here's to hoping they figure this out.

I managed to complete this quest on my 87 ww monk on my second attempt. On my first try I got one shot two times because I stood directly behind/on Cenarius when the magma waves on the sides spawned, this caused the boss to hit me after he popped back up. After my second death the event had despawned with a 2 minute timer until I could attempt again.
The second time I made sure to stand on his sides only just barely in melee reach. When the adds spawned I focused adds. On magma waves in the middle go to the sides. On side magma waves go to the back of the room to the slope far behind Cenarius. I didn't die, might be a dps loss to hide that far away, but it's far better than failing and dying. Better be safe than sorry!

Heads up...I thought my addons were making the helpers despawn. This is not the case. I finished it with all of my addons enabled.
I think there are check points for DPS during this fight.
If you fail to reach the check point in time (don't do enough DPS) then the 3 helpers despawn.
When this happens, you can then either try to down the boss yourself (which will take a very long time, as you are only level 80ish) or exit the instance a couple of times for it to reset (no need to abandon the quest, the instance will time out (eventually) and you can just start over). I think that if you just stay in the instance for a little while, it will reset all on it's own.

My strategy, after having the 3 helpers despawn for no apparent reason, was to dps the boss as much as possible, and when the adds came out, switch to them a quickly as possible (quickly, not so fast that you run over a hot spot and go flying into the air).
After downing the adds, I would go back to the boss.
After following this strategy, I was successful. I was a shadow priest, so you know the single target dps was low.

As for other tips.... I stayed behind Cenarius about 5 feet. Just enough to get the healing from him (which I never really needed). When the lava was split in the middle, I just stood there and waited for the boss to come out, and when the lava came from either side, I just went to the other, coming back to my center point after the wave.

I think im havin the same problems as everyone else. I ended up wiping 3 times already. Each time, Cenarius would disappear, then Runetotem, then Malfurion. Id take a couple of swings and id die

Still didn't understand why i died, seemed like i was hit by 2nd flame wave even if i was at the right position, standing in the middle... but i just waited dead on the ground that Cenarius dps'd down Ragnaros and got the completion... don't know if it could help anyone :P

go in quest location inter portal speak whit Cenarius and wait to battle start watch out escape from lava or you should have something granting slow fall:))
after you kill ragnar dont run wait archdruid hamull make portal to quest giver location for you
this is last quest for hyjal mount and your story 9/9 after that
i finish 9/9 story from mount hyjal and can say that you done at 5845 in revered whitout dungeon run and tabard just quest story

Finished this today on a level 48 druid. I found that if I attacked the fire adds when aiding Malfurion it would insta kill me. So I just let Malfurion defend himself and stuck with Cenarius and that did the trick. Didnt die once after that and was able to complete it just fine.

This can be solo'd in seconds on Level 70, S3 dragonflight. The quest is NOT the raid or raid instance. Fly to the quest marker on the map and go into the blue portal. This is where the quest happens. Wait for some RP then when Ragnaros is targetable and enemy, blast him for insta-death. This completes the quest. Walk out and the quest can be completed.
