You have to 'tag' Cindermaul to get the kill count and loot the tome. but at the moment the tag indicate is bugged so it wont show if you didn't tag the mob.

If you have problems with not beeing able to open the box after killing/tagging Cindermaul, try to tag some of the spawned adds (with some sort of AoE) - seemed to work for me.

To be able to loot the chest, you have to be the one to initiate the attack on him. You get credit for the kill either way though.

currently when he dies he spawns a chest that only 1 person can loot. even if you're in a party, only one person can loot it per kill. I anticipate this will be changed this week.

If you are like me from an underpopulated server with either faction (say a 1:3 Player ratio, Translated 5k alliance 15k horde) be prepared for massive ganking of this quest item, I've now spent 2hours dead trying to get it, Just to be killed, Also you need to quest to complete chains later on, So if you are on Kazzak like me, Alliance, Have fun dying forever and ever :D

This quest was put in on purpose to slow players down, you have to finish it to advance the zone.

They might "fix" it later but after 6 years of wow quest design, its very intentional on launch to be the way it is.

End of the Supply Line and Harrying the Hunters can be done by both factions, but "The Voice of..." followup requrement is different.
Goldrinn's Ferocity and Howling Mad allows other players to share you quests next on line, but Lycanthoth the Corruptor {H} will let you be in same phase as npc.
Into the Maw!{A2 ;H ;H2}. There are 2Alliance and 2Horde variants, for each faction one from wolf spirit and one backup from main quest guy in Shrine of Goldrinn.
Whole Firelands Forgeworks(8) chain doesn't have any pre-quests. You can get first time to Hyjal and ask warlock to summon you there and do the quests. However Lightning in a Bottle {H} is needed to use the standart teleport.

Tried killing him a million times. I finally got it to work by abandoning the quest, exiting the game and deleting my cache folder. Logged back on and it worked the first time.

I wonder if you get kicked from looting if you try to tag him when the shield's up... We just had one person in our party loot the chest but nobody else, though the first seventeen times nobody could get it.

Here's six minutes of YouTube without anyone getting it... I don't see anyone tagging him after the first go. I think either you're shut out if you hit the shield or it's bugged.

Edit: Confirmed. Need to log out, delete cache, and restart. And yes, you need to delete cache. Tried just logging out, no dice. No cache and we're golden.

Can confirm that logging out, deleting cache, and logging back in works. Forgot to abandon quest and didn't seem to matter.

Delete cache and close down your game and restart it all in one step. When you log back in it should work.

For all of you posting about tagging the mob...read the thread. We all know how tagging works and that is not the issue with this quest. The issue is tagging him, killing him and getting an invalid target error when attempting to loot the chest.

Another confirmation for the method of abandoning the quest, exiting the game, deleting the cache, logging in, and picking up the quest again. No problems.

I did this quest on 7 Dec 2010 with one character and then tried again today on another and got the credit for killing Cindermaul but could not get the Tome. I don't know if the bug is with doing it repeated times in the same account or what but the above method works.

I didn't even abandon the quest. I closed the game, moved the cache folder out of the World of Warcraft folder and onto the desktop, then started the game back up. The chest was there and I looted it. Didn't even have to be part of the kill to loot it.

Bugged or not... this is detrimentally a bottleneck point for questing in this zone.

I was having issues, came here to find out what could be done. There were 3 other people trying to do it when first came here looking. When I got back after 4 minutes of reading, there was over 30 people standing around trying to get it done. Yes it was 11pm on a Friday night, so more players then normal. But it was also 5 days after the launch so many players would be past this.

Also, as I said, there was only 3 others stuck when I got stuck, and just 5 minutes later there is more then 30. Clearly there is a bug with looting. I dont understand why it dosnt work like other mobs who drop the quest item you need ( like say the sons of Gruul in TBC ), where the item just falls to the ground and anybody who needs it can get it.

Its not like the mob was supposed to be hard to kill, any lvl 80 can solo it. SO why add some kind of odd loot restrictions?

A better example and also more current would be the quest item Milhouse Manstorm drops in the Stonecore. Blamoh!, its right there, right were you need it, right where everybody can get it.

I had the bugged quest as well.... There's a way around it though.

If you drop the quest than log out and delete your cache folder. Then log back in, re-aquire the quest and make sure your the first to hit him (dots work great for this). You should be able to complete the quest and move on. That's what I did and it worked great for me and was able to aquire the quest item first time go :) Good Luck!

Apparently you can not kill him fast enough, you have to kill the adds and make sure fire, wind and earth minions spawn. you have to some how AOE them.

Ok, I was one of the people having trouble getting the Tome of Opening. I went back this morning, and while the chest that drops was still unlootable by me, when it disappeared Cindermaul's body was still there and lootable, and that's where I got the Tome. It may not work for everyone, but just a heads up to keep an eye on Cindermaul's body and if it is lootable or not.

Ok, I have deleted my cache twice now. I have opened a ticket for the second time on this quest. I get credit for killing cindermaul, but still unable to loot the damn chest. WTF?

Ok, so after hours of trying this on my hunter, i decided to try multiple methods suggested here. I shot him for sure after his "immune" spell... i aoe'd the adds - and finally i considered the addon method - so after i killed him and still could loo t the chest, i immediately typed /reload to reload my UI, and i was able to loot the chest like a corpse. So there you go. /reload and you're golden.

Am I the only one who got the tome without hitting him or tagging him. I saw someone fighting him and by the time I got near he was dead. The tome was flashing so I took it.

Mind you I still have to kill him afterwards to finish the quest.

Ok, after a dozen failed attempts at this here is what I discovered:

I was killing the wrong boss.

Foolishly I was killing the fire boss (Forgemaster Pyrendius) at the southern-most end of the cave, on the rock plateau surrounded with lava. CINDERMAUL is not this guy.

Cindermaul is to the left just as you are going down the ramp to the lava room where Forgemaster Pyrendius is.

Hopefully that helps save someone some headache lol.

Not sure if this will help anyone. I just soloed this as an 81 Balance Druid. Here is how I did it. First of all make sure that you dont get jumped by one of the Dark Iron Labourers - I did, but beat him down and a quick heal later and I was good to go.

Stand by the entrance to Cindermaul, where you are close enough to hit him, but not too close as to activate his shields. I then sent in my treants (Force of Nature) hit him with the usual spells, when the mini elementals spawned I used my hurricane spell, kept doing this til all of them were dead.

Took about a 30% hit on health - not bad considering I died the first time when I tried to go toe to toe with him lol.

As of 23th of October the quest is still completely broken on my Pandaren Shaman. Tried killing him a couple of times, then abandoned quest, logged off and deleted cache and took quest again and proceeded to kill him again. No quest credit.

Also another character on separate realm just killed the mob before I arrived there first time and he said he had no problems at all..

I just got it first try with a level 81 rogue so I think all the kinks are out. He did spawn 3 small groups but they die very quickly.

For those of you not looking to fix bugs, and just want to know where to find him/the battle itself...

Go past the front line, and go past the first option to turn right, which takes you into a little hall with a dwarf and an anvil. Keep going, and turn right the next chance you get. Walk a bit, and you should see a very small path to go left quickly. Cindermaul is at the end of it, and should be visible from where you're at.

Once you start fighting him, he'll put Wall of Stone up, which will prevent him from taking any damage. I dps'd him as fast as I could when I first saw him, so this is a warning to wait until the spell is down.

After his shield goes down, he'll resume fighting. He'll use Earthsmash and stun you to summon elemental minions. First Fire, then Air, then Earth. They aren't a big deal, and die when he does.

After he dies, a chest will appear over his corpse. Loot it, and head back. =]

I just did this quest now for the first time, & it worked just fine. Whatever the bug was that all the top comments are about, it may have been in the 2 years since.

I killed Cindermaul in 1 shot (on my 90 Pally), and looted the big stone chest that appeared at his corpse. There was still a bug because the chest appeared to be unlooted (still had the loot-bag symbol as my cursor when I moused over it), and when I'd click on it my toon would kneel down as if to loot but immediately stand back up with nothing changed. This is a bug I've noticed a few times since patch 6.0.

But I still got credit for the quest on the first attempt to loot, & was able to turn it in with no problems.

Description

Twilight's Hammer is using these corridors, and others like them, to move supplies from the elemental planes up into Azeroth. In order to seal these passages off, we're going to need to know how they're constructed.

Find for me the Tome of Openings, used by the elementals to open gates between the planes.

Cindermaul the Portal Master should have one. You'll have to kill him. Careful! He's probably got some tricks up his sleeve...
