Just a note to fellow shamans, dropping any of our earth totems will currently replace the quest item and interrupt the drilling. Take care to drop your 4 totems before starting the quest or just don't drop an earth totem.

just a note, hunter traps will also interrupt the drilling as well.

Once you place the totem, move away as the local inhabitants will attack the totem and you as well if too close. When the quest completes, move far far away.

Once you place the totem, animals will come and start attacking it. You have to kill them to keep the totem working and quickly because at least four will come eventually. They got me in the end, but I held them off until I got a "sampling complete" or some such message in my combat log, so the quest was done.

It's not noted yet, so maybe I'm just slow on the uptake sometimes, but you can talk to Sam again and get a different type of totem if you'd like. You can ask for any type of earth totem, though he won't give you his earth elemental totem :). You usually get an Earthbind totem, which slows enemies. You can ask for a Stoneskin totem, which grants extra armor; Strength of Earth totem, which grants extra strength; or Stoneclaw totem, which taunts enemies (maybe not that great for this quest).

The druid spell Wild Mushroom: Detonate will also cause your totem to die, so if you're doing this while at 85 don't hit it.

Better Late Than Dead andThe Abyssal Ride are NOT needed to takeGimme Shelter! and followups, however that would make you unable to getGood Deed Left Undone.
Lady La-La's Necklace have 0% drop chance beforeOphidophobia done and 100% after, however anyone can share you this quest as long as you are 80+lvl.
Anyone can takeVengeful Heart and do it's followups as long as they are 80+lvl. Quests above are NOT needed for it.

So all you do with this one is to plant the totem in the same area where you got the quest and then fight the mobs that try to destroy it. Well I figured it would be a great idea to clear the mobs around there before I planted the totem. I'm not sure if it made any difference or not, because once I planted the totem, it seemed like every mob and his brother in a five-mile radius was attacking.

Now I'm an 83 DK and my goul and I were starting to have some problems with all these attackers. So I cranked up one of my favorite spells in such situations, Army of the Dead.

The whole scene turned into the craziest stuff I have seen lately as those guys were blasting every mob in sight. They cleaned 'em out though, quest completed!

I just did this as a rogue, I planted the totem and used vanish. YOU DO NOT NEED TO DEFEND THE TOTEM TO COMPLETE THE QUEST! Just wait and it will complete itself.

NOTE: Somehow the mobs came after me afterwards...they don't hit very hard, but they apparently will chase you out of your vanish? You can just run away though, and then go turn in the quest after they de-aggro.

I completed the quest and when I went to get the reward, it wouldn't let me select one. I suppose this could be an add-on bug rather than a WOW bug. In any event, I abandoned the quest, repeated it, and was able to get the reward.

Might be just me being dense, but as nobody else has posted it yet.... You need to move away from the quest giver a little and plant the totem in the sand, ie. the land that is sand coloured, not the white stuff. Felt stupid once I'd worked that out.

Just wanted to be clear because some comments suggest you can plant the totem anywhere near the quest giver, this is not correct! To plant the totem you do have to move out about 25 yards or so from the quest giver. Then just fight the mobs.

This is a standard protection quest.

You drop the totem then stand around killing mobs until the final mini-boss shows up the you kill it and turn in the quest.

Description

Okay, I'll let you in on the real work, since you're looking at me so desperately.

This rock is untapped! It's probably richer than a trade prince during a great war! I need samples. More samples. Samples from everywhere!

I've modified my earth totems to drill through the sand and store samples of the rock underneath. Go find a nice spot and plant one.

The shaking and rumbling will probably attract all the cute, curious wildlife, so maybe you can make some friends while you're at it.
