Yeah its a tricky 3 man, he has a LOT of HP (probably close to 100k) and does a fair bit of damage. Got him to 38% before we died with a 70 priest and 69 druid, then we recruited a 67 rogue and took him down without too much trouble.

After you kill him, you can loot the Fragment off the body, but you still have to kill the drake, which is a lot easier.

He walks from the Sanctum of the Stars to Dragonmaw Fortress, although we didn't see him on the first sweep through the area, so its possible he doesn't spawn untill after you've gone past.

Ruul is a 71 elite with thunderfury. He was hitting me (68) with 1k crushing blows. Better come with a full group for this one.

It is possible 3 man, you won't even need a healer for it :)

There's a lvl 71 elite mob called Mordenai that also gives the quest "Kindness."

Well, that elite roams around the area killed the mos there, if you can get a member of the group to pull Ruul to the Mordenai, Mordenai will attack him and will be an excellent tank :)

And even if you die during the fight/pull (like I did), the spirit healer is close by, so you can res and continue fighting xD

Note: Try waiting for the chance when both npcs are very close...or Ruul will kill you while you pull/kite

I did this with a druid tank, priest, and myself a mage.

Is not hard with 3 as long as u have a priest. Forget about doing it with another healer.

Also make sure to let tank get good aggro or you go down in a few shots.

The Cipher of Damnation is an extremely long quest line in Shadowmoon Valley. It is a prerequisite for attunement to The Eye in Tempest Keep and Mount Hyjal in Caverns of time.

Done it with two: lvl 70 feral druid and lvl 70 healing priest (me).
As long as you bring one mana pot, you can keep the druid alive long enough.

Long fight though, but still fun to do with only 2 people ^.^

Just finished this with a 5man. 2 Rogues / Druid / Warrior / Mage. I'm not sure if we need all this but definitely helped. One recommendation a good priest. Fight is somewhat like Rend only vice versa, you kill him then the dragon.

I just did this with 2 Rogues, a Shaman, and a Warlock, we had Mordenai tank and it worked. I kited it (rogue) over to Mordenai and he started tanking Ruul for us, worked like a charm. I'm on Ner'zhul.

Did it with another Frost Mage, we used ice lances to pull him to Mordenai, ice blocked and went invis to clear aggro and then just pounded him down. Mordenai didn't even die so you definately won't need any healers here if you just manage your aggro and pull successfully.

Full group isn't necesary.
Using Mordenai is a good idea, we managed to take Ruul with me (warlock) a mage and a rogue. I did die before Mordenai took aggro but luckilly I was soulstoned.
That said, a healer and tank would obviously be recomended. Easier. :)

I can confirm that Mordenai attacks Ruul. Not only that, but after dying, he repopped and attacked him again. Lock died as we finished Ruul, and a random 70 mage showed up and helped DPS. The drake is VERY easy kill after Ruul is down, but is tough. Do not under estimate!

Ruul's been nerfed pretty hard. Only hits for about 750 on mail now. I (resto shaman) soloed him down to 50%, but ran out of mana and couldn't finish the job. So I brought an arms warrior, and we killed Ruul easily. 2-mannable with a healer.

Easily 2 mannable with a prot war and any dps class.

Me (prot war) blocked his whole attacks pretty much.. (sometimes 5-10 dmg would go through), just kept spamming shield block and revenge, rogue dps'd him down.. ended up with like 75% hp left, didn't need to use a potion.

Keep Tclap and Demo shout up, and it's very easy.

Just did this with a Hunter, Rogue and myself (Druid) I was tanking and thought that we'd not do it... boy was I wrong!!! The Rogue hit him full on DPS and the Hunter had his pet helping with the tanking... when I was low health the hunter had his pet growl for all he was worth and I stopped all aggro attacks he went for the cat and allowed me to heal up and then we took him down. The Best Hunter Tactics I have seen in ages!!! Hats off to the Guy I was totally impressed. In short you can 3 man this with a little planning :) Have Fun.

Prot Warr, Afflic lock two man. Ruul > his netherdrake by a million miles, so basically the fight is only ruul himself. i had to bandage warr once but it was cut short cuz he got hit immediately. Warr didnt pop a pot, just used last stand

tanked him a bit later with a resto druid healing and a rogue dpssing. I didn't even drop 500 hp the whole time....I was a feral druid with approximately 15k armour and 10k hp.

Hunters can solo this quest, on one major condition:
They must have finished Mordenai's entire questline (starting with "Kindness"), purchased their epic flying skill, and unlocked the Netherwing Ledge dailies, so that when the player enters Dragonmaw Fortress, they gain the Dragonmaw Illusion buff.
This allows the player to kite around the area without getting attacked by the mobs.

If you have no tank, but have a warlock, you can enslave a Cataclysm Overseer to tank for you.

It may even be possible to solo Ruul this way as a warlock, but the biggest issue is threat. The overseer generates little threat (~250 tps), so it is difficult to dps and health funnel without pulling aggro. However, with sufficient aggro reduction (e.g., soulshatter, threat-reduction items) it might be possible.

After Ruul is slain, his Netherdrake is fearable, so you can opt to either re-enslave or banish your demon.

Soloed as a prot paladin in good blues. Only epics I had were the S1 shield and the shield block libram from heroic badges.

Strat:
Use BoSanc and Devotion Aura
Judge wisdom, Seal Rightousness
Keep Holy Shield up at all times and only judge SoR or use Concecration when you don't have the Spellbreaker debuff on you.

I had to bubble once and use LoH when I was low on HP and mana.
If you are getting low on mana & HP, then use all your remaining mana on damage then use LoH to get 900 mana back.

Killed him, looted and ran away from the dragon.

Soloed Ruul as a Demonology Warlock using a Felguard (Spec 6/44/11) on 29/05/2008. I also have the 2 piece tier 5 bonus (heal pet for 15% of the damage I do).

I used Curse of Weakness, Immolate, Corruption, and lots of Health Funnel to keep my pet topped off. Wise use of death coil, health pot, health stone, and soul shatter to drop aggro during the fight is also helpful.

I completed this quest solo as a lvl70 prot warrior in mostly T4 (4 out of 5). If you would like to see where you would stand in your gear before attempting this by yourself, my stats are 14,400HP; 16741 armor; 22.28% dodge; 16.88% parry; 27.53% block.

I kept demoralizing shout, thunderclap and shield block. He was dead when I was 50% HP. His netherdrake was dead at 30% HP.

Easy with 4people... a bit hard with 3 but you can do it.
In my group there were: Druid 70, Rouge 70, Hunter 69 (me).
We easly killed him. The druid was resto. My pet tanked until Ruul hp was 20%. Then the aggro went on rouge but we didnt wipe and killed him in 2 mins.
Note: Mordenai attacks Ruul if you make Ruul attacks him. Use Misdirection on Mordenai

Solo'd as a feral druid with "okay" gear (2 BoE epics, rest blues).

Mangle, Lacerate, Maul (in that order depending on rage. ALWAYS MANGLE WHEN OFF COOLDOWN). Every 1 minute (basicly, whenever your Barkskin is OFF its cooldown) use Barkskin->Regrowth->Rejuvenation->Lifebloom(x1)->Back to Bear and repeat.

1 geared tank + 1 geared healer are all that's needed.
I think the recommendations come from a time when not a lot of people had over geared 70's floating around. Most of the people doing this quest these days are spoon fed alts of geared mains and have no problem taking him out.

with that said...

I (17/44) fury warrior with sword& board in defensive stance and an arena spec'd disc. priest. Burned shield wall to let her regain some mana bout 1/2 way through. Fight took about 6 minutes.

Just soloed Ruul as a 70 ret pally. Pretty easy, really. I popped a health pot once when I was going down a little too fast for comfort. Otherwise, just used Divine Storm, CS, and Judgement of Light whenever they were up. That was enough to keep the insta-cast FoL coming. Whenever those were on cooldown, I spammed FoL. He went down pretty darn fast. :]

Soloed today as a SL/SL Lock (24 Aff/37 Demo). Pretty cut and dry. Sent the blueberry in(using a Glyph of the Voidwalker for the extra 20% stamina so he started the fight with 12.3k hits and 11.6k armor) popped Demonic Empowerment(another 20% stamina and 20% extra threat generation) to help the pet generate the threat and from there it was a matter of keeping the pet up. Health Funnel + liberal appliction of dots and he was down inside 10 minutes. The pet never lost aggro and I rotated the dots with every other application of Siphon Life.

Mind you I am not in superb gear. A meager collection of blues and 3 pieces of the undead gear from the scourge invasion prior to release of LK. Quite doable.

If, like me, you are going back to do old quests, this should be easy to do. I solo'd this as a level 80 Retribution Paladin and had no issues at all. I used the Seal of light to keep my health up and didn't even have to use any health potions. I was nervous after all the comments below, and they are accurate at lower levels, but for a lvl 80, this shouldn't be a problem.

Just solo'ed this as a 71lvl pro pally. was fairly easy just used blessing of might, seal of wisdom (for mana return) and judgement of light to gain life. Had to lay on hands once and a few holy lights but over all was easy. Did get into a pickle once he was killed as i got pushed back into some adds by the drake but by then it was over.

You'll spend a lot of time healing, I only used judgement (of wisdom) and healed myself until he was down to 20% then HoW. He doesn't do much beyond reducing your shadow resistance, and melee-ing pretty fast.

Lay on Hands or Divine Shield may be necessary.

His dragon is a joke, so once he is dead you're fine.

I fought this guy as a heavily geared level 69 got him to 13% of his 84k HP pool but he cleanses himself so I couldn't keep him dotted. Besides that he hits fairly hard but not too bad with self healing well managed cool downs any two man team of a healer and tank could take this guy. Just treat him like an instance boss.

Solo'd this evening with my MM Hunter level 70 with item level 101 stuff (greens and blues). Had my turtle pet tank him while I just kept healing and shooting him. Did it out in front of the fortress by a crater and one of those big crystal things. Took a while but he eventually went down. The drake was easy.

I soloed this as a level 85 druid. It was very easy to do. Now for the really helpful part in that he wanders a path from the road to the fortress, so just keep looking and following a general path to the fortress and back.

If you can't find him, fly out of the area then back in. I had all my quests reset after Cata hit so just redid this. I flew right to where he lands and waited, and waited, no Ruul. Finally I flew away, came back, and he landed and started walking to the fortress. He moves pretty fast also, at least faster than I remembered him moving.

Just keep Watershield up, and keep healing yourself regularly over doing damage.. in the end he dies and you win.

As of 13:36 EST on 1/12/2015 I soloed this as a resto druid level 73 even though the quest still recommends a group of 4. Two wrath hits on him and I think only 1 on the drake. It happened so fast I don't even know if I got a 2nd wrath cast on the drake. My health wasn't affected at all. No special gear either, all from previous quests/drops.

1. The Cipher of Damnation - Borak's Charge
• Accept the quest, The Cipher of Damnation - Borak's Charge, from Borak, Son of Oronok at coords 47.4, 57.2.
• Travel east, toward coords 61, 56.
• Search the Netherwing Fields for Ruul the Darkener (who lands in the area of 59, 55 and heads to Dragonmaw Fortress).
• Kill Ruul the Darkener and loot the Third Fragment of the Cipher of Damnation from its corpse.
• Travel west to coords 47.4, 57.2
• Turn in the quest to Borak, Son of Oronok.

To my surprise, soloed without problems as lvl 69 frost mage (average gear, no heirlooms).
Just popped my CDs, sent Frozen orb on him and smashed him with Ice lance procs. After he was dead, I managed to loot the corpse and run away from his drake using blink and def CDs.

Was able to solo this after 7.3.5 as a 71 Guardian Druid, but it took heirlooms and a lot of self heal. I recommend bringing a friend to help.

Ruul the Darkener lands at about 60 56 and makes his way to the fortress at 66.6 60.2
He's an Elite, so you will probably require assistance if you can't self heal.

The Cipher of Damnation - Borak's Charge

Borak, Son of Oronok at the bridge near Eclipse Point in Shadowmoon Valley wants you to recover the Third Part of the Cipher of Damnation from Ruul the Darkener.

This mission will require a group.

Description

That Cipher fragment will never reach Zuluhed. You're going to ambush Ruul the Darkener and his transport before it has a chance to make the delivery.

The Dragonmaw Fortress is directly east of here, across the Netherwing Fields. Somewhere between Dragonmaw Fortress and the Sanctum of the Stars is where you'll find Ruul. Strike hard and strike fast! And <name>, from the sound of it, this Ruul is going to be tough. Keep your guard up.

Return the Cipher to me should you succeed.
