The hook appears to have a maximum range, if you are out of range the gryphon just flies up and doesn't drop it's rider.

You can effectively grab them grabbing your flying mount and use the hook within a few yards of them. Be carefull though, you will take some falling damage this way.

I noticed while questing, a lot of people were trying to attack Gryphon Riders on the ground. If you see a Gryphon Rider on the ground, its most likely bugged and will evade all your attacks. You can only attack targets that you pull down with the chain. I'm sure a lot of people will come here to see if the quest is bugged, so I hope this helps.

It seems you have to stand still after you use the hook, otherwise the channeling will interrupt and the mob will not land in the correct place and therefore bug

The method I used to complete this was sort of a combination of the tips provided above. I noticed that if while flying I followed the Gryphon and used the hook, it'd fail as if I was on the ground since it's a channel, however if I was stationary in the air, falling down wouldn't break the channel so basically what I did...

1. Follow a gryphon while flying
2. When close, stop moving and fire

Don't know if it helps, but I was spam-clicking the item too :p

its not bugged. not all of them have riders. fly around till you see one with a rider ( it will have lightning following it because of the rider's weapon) target it, land, and capture.

I tried the above methods, they no work. Here's what I did:

Pick one, fly behind him (but not too far off the ground) and while moving and targeting him, use the hook. You will fall to the ground and drag the guy down with you.

P.S. Make sure the gryphon actually has a rider on it. Not all of them do.

P.P.S. You know the gryphon has a rider on it by the blue lightning which trails from it.

There's no need for any fancy tricks on a flying mount. Just stand still while you shoot the hook.

Currently I checked all ~15 or so war gryphons in the area, not a single one has a rider and no new ones have popped in the last 15 minutes.

Cannot kill the gryphons. Quite a few of the flying npcs are on the ground, cannot be attacked, not even evade bugs.

Cannot advance the quest chain, what a crock. Its also a tuesday, who knows when the next reboot is.

So if someone or somehow this glitches out, have fun being denied the rest of the zone.

I flew up and made myself comfortable on the roof of Bloodgulch Inn which overlooks the river battleground to the rear - made it a bit easier to target the enemy flying by. Caught the first 3 quickly, had a bit of a wait for a 4th to fly near enough.

Trying to get a character to 85 and accepted Drag 'em Down and Crushing the Wildhammer but could not complete. All the Dwarves in the area had red names like usual, but I couldn't attack them. I pulled down gryphon riders and they just stood in front of me and despawned.

On a positive note, I was able to do Total War and War Forage with barely any fighting at all since they would not aggro.

An interesting note: If you hit one with a hook and then interrupt yourself, (as a Paladin, I used Flash of Light) the enemy will float in the air. You can get a few hits in, then he beings to 'swim' down to you. Looks really weird, like they were about to fall and then forgot what they were doing. I don't know what other abilities get the same effect though, I didn't test it further.

Narkrall Rakeclaw, when he gives you Drag 'em Down:

Kill a few Thundermar gryphon riders and I'll believe your Horde is as mighty as you say.

Also Narkrall Rakeclaw, directly after you successfully "kill a few Thundermar gryphon riders" and then gives you the next quest, Bait and Throttle:

Until you can prove to me you can handle a drake as well as a Dragonmaw, your Horde is nothing to me.

Um... Mr. Rakeclaw, sir? Is this going to be one of those endless carrot-on-a-stick type scenarios, where no matter what I do, it's not actually ever going to be enough?
Because I'm really quite tired of that kind of a relationship.

Edit: Welllp. Upon turning in Bait and Throttle, which involves taming a wild f**king dragon, during a cinematic he says to Zaela:

The Horde? I SPIT on your Horde! Our enemies are weak and splintered, yet you bargain with Hellscream? Dragonmaw stand alone!

So. Yeah. He's just... one of those people.

Description

A single Dragonmaw drake is worth a dozen Wildhammer gryphon-riders. Take them off of their lice-ridden birds and they're nothing.

Even you can slay them easily, Horde-<class>.

Hunt gryphon riders flying over the river north of Bloodgulch. Take this hook and fling it at them as they fly by. Their momentum will hurl them from their mount, right to your feet. Finish them! Kill a few Thundermar gryphon riders and I'll believe your Horde is as mighty as you say.
