If you're an enchanter you're going to run into a huge need for Nether Essence right around the 250-260 skill level. Unfortunately it's tough to come by and expensive at the AH (7gp apiece on my realm). But I've found a way to manufacture the stuff, provided you have a little patience and also have access to tailoring skills.

The key is Black Mageweave Headband (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=10024). This headband has a 20% droprate for Greater Nether Eseence when disenchanted, but there is a good chance to receive more than one per disenchant! So go to Dunemaul (http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=5471) in Tanaris and farm the ogres (all variants) there for mageweave, you can get up to x3 pieces per kill, you'll get a drop on nearly every kill, and they respawn very quickly. In about an hour I managed to get 8 stacks. Bolt these pieces using tailoring, and make Black Mageweave Headband (3 bolts + 2 Heavy Silken Thread). Out of about a dozen headbands I got 5 Greater Nether Essence.

If you have access to lots of heavy leather you can also make Black Mageweave Boots which have a disenchant rate of like 25% for Greater Nether Essence.

I soloed Uldaman on this advice and there's simply no way you could have gotten 20 pieces of Greather Nether Essence there. Clearly the green drops are not even in the required level range, only a couple of blue drops stand a small chance of disenchanting into Greather Nether Essence, and about five blues have around 16% chance of DE into Lesser Nether Essence.

However, I did get a couple of Large Radiant Shard (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=11178) so it wasn't a totally wasted effort. Just nothing in the way of Nether Essence.

but just to add a further note * I managed to get to skill level 250 enchanting just by using tailor made items these include-

These 4 itemz will DE into all the mats needed to get you to skill level of about 260

Also note this method is essentially free if you have enough linen cloth, wool cloth, silk cloth and mageweave and can be leveled at the same time you level your tailoring. i however ended up buying alot of the cloth and the results were around 33% cheaper than straight up buying the mats needed excluding the runecloth because of the ammount needed to get the right mats

Despite what you may see here, it does take three Lesser Essences to create a Greater Essence. What you see here is actually a quirk of the way Blizzard handles the spell. On Blizzard's end, a two-step process occurs:

You use the first Lesser Essence, destroying it in the process.
A spell is cast, which destroys the other two Lesser Essences, and creates a Greater Essence.

This spell here--step two--is the spell that gets listed here on Wowhead.

best way i found.... atleast on my server is to go on the AH and search level 41-45 armor, and buyout anything from 1-1.5g... it seems that at any given point there are 10-15 items in there, and by disenchanting all of the items i normally end up with 3-4 greater nethers and some Vision/Dream dust.

As i said that is on my server, im not sure about other servers.

it is great to farm and sell on my server....ill scan the auction house looking for weps lvl 42-45 tht are 4g or cheaper and i will de them and 1/3 of the times i get 2 of these and they sell for 5g each easily so u can make a huge profit off these if done correctly!

Both Auctioneer and Fizzwidget's Disenchant Predictor can help you find Weapons and armor that have a higher than normal chance to drop Greater Nether Essences. Most armor and weapons give you a 20% chance to drop GN, but some give 80%. This is almost never factored into the price of the weapon.

By mousing over everything in the right level range, you can quickly find these hidden nuggets and be assured of greater profits! I still buy the items that only give 20% chance, but I have a lower price that I'm willing to pay and the weird thing is that there is almost never a premium for the "better" item.

I've had far better success finding Greater Nether this way than, for example, Greater Eternal Essences. Probably because more folks scan the AH for stuff in the range that drops GEs.

These are nice, and sell for about 10-13g on my Exodar each.

You can buy 40-50 greens for less than that, so you can make a profit.

these sell for about 14 gold on my server i have made about 350g in 5 days just buying all the green weapons i see lvl 41-45 less than 10g and disenchanting them. I have gotten 2 pretty often which is high profit. It only takes 5 min a day to buy and disenchant then re list on ah.

White Bandit Mask if you have a tailor with the pattern has a decent chance of d/e-ing into these. The mats are cheaper than the ones listed above.

Ignore all that outdated crap up top - go solo farm Zul'Farrack. Black Mageweave Headband gives you 90% dream dust and only 1 of that so forget it. ZF has crap tonnes of mageweave too so its worth it for time and money

I disenchanted 27 Black mageweave headbands and didnt even recieve one lesser nether essence let alone a greater!
(I needed to level my tailoring so it wasnt a total waste)
I think im just gunna save up 500g and buyout all the weapons and armor i can find for cheap on the AH... :(

I found a nice place to farm these Essences.
It's in Stranglethorn Vale. There's a chest at coords 47.6 42.4, and every time I looted it I found at least one green item, which always gave me 2 Greater Nether Essences per disenchant.
Then, while you are waiting for the respawn of the Solid Chest, you can easily kill the mobs around there, which drop nice items for disenchant. I was able to get some Lesser Nether Essences and also a Greater one in half an hour from mobs, and 6 Greater ones from the Chest.
You can kill especially Skullsplitter Spiritchaser, 'cause if you disenchant the items they drop there's a better chance to get the essences than the items dropped by the other mobs there.

If you are less patient (and if you have Tailoring skill), you can actually try to take this essences from the recipe Black Mageweave Headband, which requires 230 in Tailoring skill, 3 Bolts of Mageweave and 2 Heavy Silken Thread. Anyway remember that disenchanting this item you will only have the 20% chance to get 1 or 2 Greater Nether Essences.
That's all I can say about farming this damned materials... They're very important to improve enchanting until 280.

EDIT: while farming in stranglethorn I found another Solid Chest near the one mentioned before. It's at coords 47.3 40.

Zul'Farrak is also a good place to farm GNE, especially if you're a tailor or know a friend who is. The mobs drop a LOT of silk and mageweave, which can be used to make the Black Mageweave Headband as stated above, and also a few greens here and there that can be DE'd for nether essence as well. Plus they drop a lot of vendor trash you can sell (be sure to go in with plenty of space in your backpack) for a few gold per run. I usually just run the instance up to the burial mounds, which takes me about 40 minutes or so (72 mage), and usually get about three stacks each of silk and MW and a couple of greens. i would have thought it would be more logical to indeed take tailoring and level that up at the same time as your enchanting, thus providing you with guaranteed free greens, providing your don't buy the mats. I know lots of folks who decide to do their professions after they have gotten to 80 for something else to do, on the downside of raiding and getting geared.

To me this is absolute waste of your time, unless you happen to be pretty minted with gold. Its pretty easy and straight forward to do both and indeed very cheap if your friends can give you the rods and what not each time you level up your enchanting. By doing it all this way, you should either be near the max of 450 enchanting / tailoring or very close to it.

Zul Farrak is indeed a great place to go grab some appropriate level greens and cloth. GNE on my server is 15g cheapest buyout or on most occasions is 25g per GNE...its so very expensive. Got guildies, ask them to give you their greens 41-50, most importantly the green weapons, if they aren't going to use them, as you will get the benefit from them as will they when you get your enchanting up further..so its win all around.

However, some thing a little strange I have seen recently. If you take an 80 into a low level instance, I have noticed that the drop chance for green stuff, seems to actually lower. Now I have tried this on multiple 80's and tried with lower level toons. The lower level toons actually get upto 60% more in the way of green drops than the 80's, which for me points to the fact, they have nerfed the drop rate for greens on 80's in lower level instances. That being said I have taken lower levels through instances and their drop rates for items was almost nil, they then went with their normal lvl party and greens where dropping all over the place.

Maybe something we need looking into ?

If you are into mining and blacksmithing you should build some mithril scale pants and disenchant those.

they drop around 10% +/- 10% lesser nether essence and a lot of vision dust .

you need a lot of mithril to build those , but on the other side it's the only thing you need to build those.

After my second ZF run I decided to completely edit my previous post to give you a more detailed information about running ZF for 魔纹布 and Greater Nether Essence

Additional information
- There are many mobs vandering around alone. Maybe I missed some of them
- I took my exactly 30 minutes to clear the instance as a well geared lvl73 prot warrior (you just basically rend, TC, SW the sh*t out of the mobs)
- Out of the 2 runs I got maybe 4-5 green items. The drop rate is extremely low
- I did not count money because of bag space issues I had to drop nearly all the junk I gathered, but I'd say you can get ~20-25g/run

Two runs of ZF and 21 Black Mageweave Headbands and all I have to show for it is a HUGE pile of Dream Dust.

Seems as though they decided that BoAs were enough to twink with and you shouldn't be able to get the mats to enchant them....

Testing today, I've found that out of nine Black Mageweave Headbands, I created ten Dream Dust and six Greater Nether Essences. So whatever was going on, they might have fixed it - or I just had a run of good luck. I'll know more once I get another stack or two of mageweave to test with. :)

Edit: a little further testing gave the same results!

30 Headbands yielded 38 Dream Dust & 8 Greater Nether Essence for me.... 1 Essence every 3.75 headbands.

After reading the posts here I started creating http://www.wowhead.com/item=10024 (black mageweave headband) in bulk and nearly gave up after 20 yielding nothing but dream dust, but the last 10 gave me 7!
I guess perseverance is key. :)

Turned 18 Stacks of Mageweave into 90 Bolts of Mageweave into 30 Black Mageweave Headband.

30 Black Mageweave Headband disenchanted into 40 Dream Dust and 5 Greater Nether Essence.

A blacksmith can make 巨型黑色锤, which 3/4s of the time will DE into 1-2 Greater Nether Essences. A 巨型黑色锤 needs one 黑珍珠, 16 秘银锭, 2 厚皮, and 4 暗影石. The main demand for the hardest item to obtain (黑珍珠) was enchanting rods, which are no longer needed. So 黑珍珠 should now be fairly cheap on AH.
