From level squishes to new ways to approach content through Chromie Time,
Shadowlands
introduces a lot of leveling changes, so we've compiled a list of Tips & Tricks to help you level up faster. Inside you'll find a list of helpful items and consumables, the best expansions to level in, heirloom and enchant suggestions, and even a few helpful addon suggestions, reviewed and approved by our resident speed leveling expert
DesMephisto
!
You might also want to familiarize yourself with
Chromie Time
, as it significantly overhauls the leveling experience, allowing you to choose an expansion to focus on, scaling content to an appropriate level range and allowing you to tailor your early game experience.
Choose Your Leveling Expansion with Chromie Time
War Mode
War Mode offers a huge advantage for leveling, both by increasing the amount of experience earned by quests and enabling additional talents while out in the open world. This makes it a must have for the majority of players focusing on leveling up quickly. That said, while these bonuses certainly help you level faster, War Mode may not always be the answer - in most cases, there's not a whole lot of PvP at lower levels, but some areas can be very highly trafficked, and if you find yourself getting bogged down in combat, or having to avoid enemy players, you may actually lose more time than you gain. The general rule of thumb is to start with War Mode on, but don't be afraid to turn it off if you need to.
You can turn War Mode off in any rested area in order to avoid combat or forcing phase changes, but turning it on again requires you to be in Orgrimmar or Stormwind.
Consumables
When leveling quickly, preparation is everything, and the right consumables not only get you from place to place a lot faster, they also make your life easier. While not all of these consumables are absolute necessities, you'll appreciate being able to handle a large variety of situations. Many of these consumables have no level requirement
Buffs
十地饮剂
- More stats, experience, and it lasts through death. What more needs to be said?
林荫药剂
- A free 10% stat boost, which you can keep up at all times.
柠檬草配鱼排
- While most food buffs give rating, which means you need to keep a lot of different versions on hand as you level up, the health, mana, and buff are all flat percent gains, meaning you only need to carry one kind of consumable around from start to finish.
致密磨刀石
&
巫师之油
- Although the bonuses are rather small and new versions are continually needed as you level up, these are extra bonuses for just about any character, especially in the early levels where they can help make the difference between one and two shotting enemy mobs.
狂怒战鼓
- With no level requirement, you can pop Bloodlust/Heroism whenever it's needed - great for taking out elite quest mobs or any period of sustained combat.
侦测次级隐形药剂
- You don't encounter stealthed mobs very often, but there are a few quests which can be made way easier by having these on hand.
Speed & Mobility
迅捷药水
- Moving faster is the biggest and most common advantage to leveling faster, especially before you have access to an epic mount or in areas where you can't use it. You'll hold onto a couple different versions due to level requirements, starting with this most basic of the bunch.
德拉诺迅捷药水
- From level 35 onward, Draenic Swiftness Potions will replace the standard version. While they're quickly replaced by the faster Skystep, they still remain quite useful for the 200% swim speed buff, when you need a short burst through water.
天行药水
- Starting at level 40, these are the go-to go-fast potions, although the hovering portion is purely cosmetic and doesn't actually give you slowfall or water walking.
火枪鞋
- 25 seconds of +200% movement speed, water walking, and only requires level 20! These would seem to be better than any of the other potions, but keep in mind that they can only be used in outdoor areas, and can't be used in combat, so save them for trying to get across long distances quickly.
地精滑翔器工具包
- Should always be kept on hand unless you're an Engineer or Demon Hunter (although gliders are actually slightly faster). They're also very easy to acquire by flipping Warlord's of Draenor Garrison supplies at the trading post building, making them effectively free so long as you have supplies to spend. The usefulness really can't be overstated, as you can save a great deal of time by simply jumping off mountains rather than mounting up and walking back down, and can even cross huge distances from the right height.
Dealing with Water
烁鳞潜水装
- Not something you'll use frequently, but comes in very handy during the few quests which put you into water. The long duration means you won't need a lot of them either, and can be very handy for any areas near water.
邪能页岩之锚
&
魔石浮标
- Similarly not useful very often, but very useful when they are. Being able to quickly to or out of the ocean floor in an area like Thousand Needles or Vashjir can be a great time saver!
XA-1000水面滑行者
- Another must have when dealing with water. It's a little harder to use than swimming, but if your goal is to just get across a wet surface, it can't really be beat. Pairs very well with gunshoes, to the point where it can actually be faster to purposefully point yourself toward water to skim across.
Mount Equipment
While there are several different pieces of mount equipment, they're all fairly niche and their bonuses can be made up for in various ways. Because of this, it really comes down to how you approach the leveling process and whether you plan to use a full array of consumables. Equipment is also character specific, so you don't need to worry about overwriting bonuses.
快步护蹄
- Doesn't stack with a lot of mounted movement speed effects, it works quiet well at earlier levels for those who don't have them, making it the best general bonus.
舒心驭手骑甲
- Can be very useful for players who prefer to ride straight through from one area to another, but you can get a cheap version of the effect for free by using the
代驾型摩托
, which can be dazed, but cannot be dismounted.
充气护蹄
- Would seem to be a very good bonus, but with the amount of water movement consumables, it actually slows you down. The buff is also removed upon being hit, so you'll frequently lose time remounting in order to reapply the buff. If you're not using consumables, this might be the best overall bonus just for dealing with water, but it's certainly not the most effective use of the slot.
鞍座降落伞
- Also isn't overly useful as you should have gliders on hand at all times, though it might be more useful once you unlock flying.
Teleportation
Unless you're a Mage, there aren't a whole lot of ways to get back and forth between major areas to turn on War Mode or access the faction capital teleportation hubs, and your trusty
炉石
can only take you so far. With these, you can free up your hearthstone to take you back to quest givers and flight paths, while still retaining the ability to get back to major cities.
协作披风
,
协和披风
, &
协同披风
- These all require guild reputation, so you might not have access to them too quickly, but once you do they're amazing for getting to a wide variety of areas via the teleportation hubs. Unlike most equip effects, they don't incur a 30 second cooldown before activation, and the three don't share a cooldown, so you can use them independently.
要塞炉石
&
达拉然炉石
- If you're playing through Warlords or Legion content you'll unlock these automatically, and they make a huge difference in your ability to quickly navigate those expansions, since you can continue to set your hearthstone elsewhere.
Mobile Services
There are two basic ways of managing your inventory while leveling - keep it clean and loot nothing but the essential quest items, or
loot literally everything
and let the vendor sort it out. If you're in the latter group, having mobile vendors is not only useful, but downright necessary for cleaning up your inventory on the go!
旅行者的苔原猛犸象缰绳
&
雄壮远足牦牛缰绳
- Manage your inventory while auto-running from point A to point B, and the Yak even lets you transmog on the go, because we all know that looking good is the most important optimization you can make in any game.
雄壮商队雷龙的缰绳
You're probably not going to need to access the auction house very much, but if you find yourself running out of those consumables, being able to grab more from the auction house without heading back to a major city can be a huge time saver. Just make sure you have a nearby mail box!
Best Expansions to Level In with Chromie Time
With the addition of Chromie Time, there are now many ways to approach leveling, with unprecedented freedom to choose your own story experience and the content you wish to go through. From level 1-10, new players will be taken to Exile's Reach, though veteran players may also choose to start at their traditional racial starting point which will take them to their capital city.
New players will go through a brand new introductory experience called Exile's Reach, teaching them the basics of the game from level 1-10, and then directing them to Battle for Azeroth content until level 50.
Veteran players will have the option of going to Exile's Reach or beginning at their racial starting point and making their way to their capital city by level 10, at which point they'll have complete freedom in choosing which expansion storyline to follow.
Allied Races will begin at level 10 and are immediately directed to their faction capital, where they'll also be able to choose where to level further.
Demon Hunters and Death Knights start at level 8 and will go through their special class introductory storyline before arriving at their faction capital.
While Chromie Time gives more freedom as to where to level, it's not completely without restriction. Each zone still has a minimum level, so you can't start in Icecrown at level 10 without first going through the rest of the content. Not all expansions are created equal either, and while you can easily level up in any of them, some are smoother experiences than others. You can check out the guide below to better familiarize yourself with Chromie Time, but we've also laid out our suggestions for the best expansions to level in.
Choose Your Leveling Expansion with Chromie Time
Warlords of Draenor - Draenor
Warlords of Draenor
is easily the best expansion to level in, as it provides many useful features and bonuses to help you level faster. The Garrison itself helps provide a small amount of bonus experience, as well as an extra hearthstone, but the real advantages come from the Garrison outpost abilities within each zone, along with the numerous treasures and bonus objectives strewn throughout the expansion areas.
Mists of Pandaria - Pandaria
Mists of Pandaria
is a great expansion to level in, due to the strong quest density and simplicity of design. There density is actually quite good, as there many large empty areas to traverse or expansion systems delaying the leveling process, though there are a good number of RP events, so your mileage may vary.
Battle for Azeroth - Kul Tiras and Zandalar
Battle for Azeroth
leveling is fairly well streamlined, which makes it good for leveling, although it does have a few hiccups. Azerite armor would even be better than Heirlooms, but the Heart of Azeroth currently requires level 40, at which point you're nearly done leveling anyway, so that advantage is severely mitigated. The questing itself is pretty good, with strong density and plenty of rare mobs, bonus objectives, and treasures to boost your experience gain, but it doesn't really offer anything special either.
Legion - Broken Isles
Legion
would be a good expansion to level in, but it also has a few hiccups. You spend part of your time unlocking Artifact Weapons which aren't any better than Heirlooms, and Legion Legendaries no longer have any effect in Shadowlands, so there's no advantage to getting them either. You'll also be directed to the Order Hall quest lines quite a bit, though you're unlikely to actually make it through much of that content before hitting max level - it can be good if you want to go back and unlock more of those rewards later on, but isn't really worth the effort from a leveling perspective.
Cataclysm - Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor
Actually encompasses all of the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor which were revamped during the
Cataclysm
expansion, with the newer zones tacked onto the end, so you won't actually start them until around level 35. Because of this, it's unlikely you make it through more than half of the new zones before reaching max level, spending the majority of time in the old world instead. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as some of the zones are quite good, but you should be prepared to travel from zone to zone a lot more than you might in other expansions.
Wrath of the Lich King - Northrend
Wrath of the Lich King
is a fan favorite, but a little outdated compared to newer expansion content. While not as bad as Outland, many quests are more tedious than their modern versions, creating a lot more downtime and slowing the process overall.
Burning Crusade - Outland
Like Wrath,
Burning Crusade
content suffers in being outdated - lacking the quality of life improvements that have made their way into the game since Cataclysm and more recent updates. Escort quests take longer and are much more prone to failure, gathering quests tend to be much more tedious, there's no extra action button, and a lot of quests make you travel back and forth across big empty zones.
Leveling Gear
With the changes to Heirlooms, there's actually a great deal more useful gear now than previously. Supplementing your heirlooms with dungeon drops can be very effective, and many quest rewards can actually become quite useful again. That said, most of it is rather min/maxy and not strictly needed to succeed - simply wearing heirlooms will get you from level 1 to 50 without any problems whatsoever, and the statistical change between levels is so small that you really don't need to worry about keeping every piece of gear current at all times.
Heirlooms
Heirlooms have been completely overhauled in Shadowlands, removing the bonus experience and adding new set bonuses. While this would seem to make Heirlooms better than they were before, they actually don't stand out as much against normal gear, meaning you will periodically find drops which can be even better than the Heirloom, even if those drops don't continue to level up alongside you. This opens up a greater range of options, as dungeon gear, Azerite, treasures, and other items found in the various expansions can become relevant during the leveling process... though not by such a wide margin that you can't still simply wear your heirlooms and not worry about juggling the extra gear.
As far as which heirloom to use, there are a lot of options for each armor type which offer slightly different stats tailored toward the different roles of tanking, DPS, and healing. Because the stat gain is so small though, exactly which one you're wearing isn't the biggest consideration, so much as keeping a competitive item in that slot while leveling, but we've complied a helpful list to point you in the right direction.

Heirloom set bonuses themselves are fairly minor, with the greatest advantage being the extra rested experience, which is great for players who level slowly over the course of many play sessions, though much less relevant for those who binge level from 1-50 within a short time span. You can find out more in our Shadowlands Changes guide, or learn about about which heirlooms to use and where to get them in our Heirloom Guide.
Complete Heirloom GuideHeirloom Changes in Shadowlands
Enchants
Like consumables, enchants play a strong role in optimizing your character for leveling. Because of the leveling squish, many of these previously low level enchants offer very strong bonuses which remain competitive considerably longer now than they might have in the past. Likewise, some enchants which were higher level can now be used much earlier than before. Consider at least enchanting the heirlooms you plan to level with, as they will only need to be applied once, though carrying a stack of extra enchantment scrolls for gear slots that are regularly replaced is also an option for those who want to go above and beyond.
Keep in mind that like heirlooms, there are a lot of useful enchants, and which one is strictly best may vary between class or spec. That said, simply having any enchant active is better than none at all.

Addons
Addons can be a massive help while leveling, whether by giving you more information, pointing you in the right direction, or just making the user interface look a bit nicer. While you don't really need a lot of addons for leveling the way you might in more competitive content such as raiding or PvP, we've compiled a short list of handy addons which may help you throughout the leveling process.
Installing and Maintaining Addons
Azeroth Auto Pilot
- Azeroth Auto Pilot is a Speed leveling addon for World of Warcraft, which skips cutscenes, adds hotkeys for quest items, automatically uses flight points, picks up and turns in quests, tells you which quests to do, and even shows you where to go!
WeakAuras
- Allows you to setup custom alerts, either for combat information, or tracking things like your experience potion expiring. Making your own auras from scratch can be quite confusing, but luckily there's a huge repository of player made auras available on
Wago.io
.
HandyNotes
- A small and simple addon which allows you to place notes on the map.
SilverDragon
- Alerts you to the presence of rare mobs, creating a frame and map icons whenever one is found.
Leatrix Plus
- A useful tool with many features including auto accepting quests, automatically vendoring junk, and skipping cinematics.
Zone quest Abandon
- Doesn't currently work in BfA content, but this handy little addon allows you to abandon all quests in a zone after you've moved on, a nice time saver when you have a bunch of old quests in your log.
UI Addons are also very useful as they can streamline and overhaul the player experience in significant ways, leading to a much more enjoyable experience, even if they're not strictly necessary.
ElvUI
and other overhauls - An "all in one" package which completely overhauls the UI with something far more streamlined than the default, with individual customization options for each element. Great for people who want a simple solution without much setup.
Tidy Plates
- Nameplate mods overhaul friendly and enemy nameplates with different themes and more customization options than the default version.
Bartender4
,
Dominos
- Bar mods specifically modify your action bars, allowing you to customize them to your liking with various options to show, hide, collapse, and grow in various ways.
Pitbull4
- Unit Frame mods allow you to customize the player, target, and group unit frames in a variety of ways, enabling or disabling features independently to show exactly the information you want to see.

A note on the
Mount Equipment
part, as you've pointed out, most of them are made trivial by consumables, but the
舒心驭手骑甲
is the most useful one, specially on leveling, and on areas you won't be using flying for too long (at beginning of current expansions mostly).
I understand most people tending to the waterwalking or parachute ones, but with flying unlocked account wide on most previous zones, those are made trivial by the consumables IMO, more than the anti-dismounting one. Even in older expansions there are still non-flying areas, like the Isle of Thunder, Giants, Wintergrasp, Tol Barad, and the like, that either while leveling or with scaled up mobs, you'll get dazed and dismount and slowed down. The anti-daze equip makes it for a more 'permanet' equipment for alts too, as there will be more expansions, and you'll be stuck to the ground at the beginning anyway, and any 'needs' for the other ones are made trivial by cheap consumables (or not, in the case of engineer's Cloak Glider tinker).
I'm saying this as I've seen, since WoD (with the Glider Kits), that my alts we're better prepared with engineering, that is more of a 'utility profession' than gold making one (although with an army of engineers we can still make gold thru making more Golems on paralel, those still sell fast).
---
A note on the cloaks, I bet not many people use them too, but teleportation items, not just those, but, again, engineering ones, makes it so that you have more freedom on where you save your HS.
--
AS for leveling zones, I'd advice, while working on them, and if you're aiming for future gold making stuff, for people to try and do WoD and Legion ones, mostly because on their way up they can farm followers. There's a usefull WoD addon, FollowerLocationInfo, that works well with Tomtom, so you open it, chose which quick ones you'll grab (some, like with alchemy(horde)/inscripton(alliance) ones might require a bit more of quests), and click to add waypoints.
--
About heirlooms, I think most people didn't understand how the rested XP worked out. Even pre-SL, the rested XP works ON KILLS, so if you're leveling thru Dungeons, for example, you'll 'use it up' quickly on 1-2 DUngeons, as those have a bigger clutter of mobs than if you do questing outside. Yesterday, within 60 minutes I leveled from 74-82 doing quests in Northrend, full heirlooms and spending the whole 150% in that time frame. Doing dungeons MIGHT seem faster for some people, but it is only if your queues are gonna be faster (as tanks or healers). While questing outdoors, you spend the Rested XP 'slower', and in SL I bet you can use one session of RXP (the full 150%) for even longer. I'll still use heirloom on newer characters in SL, and even upgrade them if there'll be a 50-60 upgrade. I don't mind the resources spend on their upgrades, as with a lot of alts doing at least the first TW quests (giving 500 TW currency) you can do that without 'wasting gold', as most people keep pointing out (yeah, you don't need to spend gold on their upgrades).
--
A note on ElvUI, recently they have made it possible to not only have a 'public Profile', that uses most settings, but a 'Private Profile' also, all in the same 'Profile' Tab. A difference I noticed between the two, is that Private Profile, manages the 'Skins' section, so for example, you don't like how ElvUI skins some UI elements, like Talents frame, Achievements, Clock, Character and still like the Default ones (with their cool backdrops), you can make a 'Private' Profile with those elements unskinned.
And advice I'd give, specially to altoholics, is to make at least one Private Profile for each Class, setting the Class' name as the Profile's name, preferably with numbers, for faster pinpointing, on newer characters. This way, you 'waste' only a few seconds-minutes setting up each new character you create :D
Do keep the WTF folder backed up from time to time, it is where not only ElvUI, but all your addon's configurations are saved.

The Sylvan Elixir for the 10% buff only works in the legion leveling zones. For people who want to level in WoD, there are craftable tents in the garrison tannery that give the same buff. These tents are account bound and are crafted from the follower you can assign there.

Why do you have Stained Shadowcraft set in many slots as recommendation for Hunter or Shaman? The mail equivalents give the stats but still have the 5% Armor Skills bonus to agility.
Edit: It is now changed to the mail heirlooms. Thanks.

You cannot use the weapon and ring enchants mentioned in the guide above. Wow simply tells u that your items are to low. 9.0 seems to have changed how enchants work without changing the info text ingame.

after 9.0 I tested on an assassin rogue if Superior Striking, Mongoose or Elemental Force is better
results:
lvl 10 char autohit
EF 35 dps
SS 22 dps
lvl 10 char with rotation
EF 47 dps
SS 36 dps
lvl 48 trial char autohit
EF 166 dps
SS 144 dps
lvl 48 trial char rotation
EF 550 dps
SS 400 dps
Mongoose doesnt even procc'd for more than a minute, than it was 7 agi, so it was the worst of all. so stick with Elemental Force for Agi classes.

another note for cloaks:you can use the tailoring BOP cloak enchants on cloaks. I used the Feathery enchantment, so I took less fall dmg. in cases it could worth more than 1-2 main stat or 2% speed

I truly do appreciate you taking the time to make a comprehensive guide, especially since I want to try my hand at a Brewmaster Monk tomorrow. I'd be wary about leveling in WoD though because I once had a Forsaken Hunter, and I found that a couple of quest mobs who focused solely on me. One of which was a gronn, and the game gives you plenty of NPCs for the fight. Still, if you can group or outheal the damage, go for it.
That said, I agree with the Burning Crusade, Legion, and Wrath of the Lich King expacs. Granted, my (perhaps current?) main is max level when I did the last one. I still want to one-shot mobs from time to time. Unfortunately, it doesn't feel sastifying here. What's worse is how the drop rates are so bad that one point I was targeting baby animals, and how a good portion of those quests made me feel bad after completion. Oh, and most of those zones (and Catalysm ones) were originally designed for players with flying practically right off the bat so.
On the other hand, I feel
much
more positively about Pandaria. Not because it's my favorite expansion, I actually tried it as a Discpline Priest earlier. The quests are really close together and I only died to a rare neutral mob. Granted, I almost panicked over some barricades. That was until I remembered that players couldn't fly at first so, the devs would have had to plan around that.
