This Mask is good and obtained from the lvl 52 Rogue Quest, but also easily replaced. Most Rogues do end up getting this although Duskbat Drape (https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=19982) is another reward you can choose from which is not so easily replaced, yet its also not so glamourous at 53 either >.<

One of the best PVP heads for a while...
Im a pure pvp rogue and i easily passed up something like Blooddrenched Mask for this...people think im crazy
Prolly best pvp mask before Foror's Eyepatch and up into raid stuff or either of the pvp sets...
This is much better than Eye of Rend IMO (https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=12587#M0z) which is what most people seem to replace it with if they are in the pvp vein and want similar stats...1 less crit but 26 ap and 4 stam...

If you get the Ebon Mask at 50 and you don't do any old world instance runs, the mask will last you until you can get Veteran's Skullcap https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=29940 at 58. 8 levels use out of it isn't bad but is it better than an always on fall damage reducing cape?

Can druids get this mask? It reads like it is the reward for a rogue class quest, but this item shows up when I restrict results to "Usable by Druid".

this mask is good for a rogue until they can get a tier 1 or tier 1.5.. i used this until i went into outland, i had rend's eye patch for pvp sometimes, but i was combat so this was better for me so i rarely used the eye patch.

believe it or not the Swashbuckler's Eyepatch of the Monkey is better than this. the only difference is this mask has 5 more armor but the eyepatch has better stats.

Just in case anyone is looking there is an alternative to this mask, now that it's been removed from game and also because it was never available to anybody but rogues anyways, here is another black face mask available to ALL: Sunroc Mask

got this lastnight, 56 NE rogue illidan server, the paper things from the ozzes in azshara was the hardest part, the group to temple was easy had 60 priest, a tip on getting the paper fragments from the ozze is YOU CAN PICKPOCKET THEM FOR THE FRAGMENTS, and than kill them for a possible 2 in one chance., sometimes i got 2 papers from one ozze by doing that, other times not, just lucky...Also the 2 headed dragons in the area, share the same spawn as the ooze's, so kill them mount away and come back, thier should be an ozze in the area. GL its worth it, stick with it..you wont be dissapointed.

You should definitely upgrade your helm of fire with the ebon mask. I miss my fireball too, it was a nice way to time between ticks for energy regneration, but the mask is clearly superior. I wear mine over my Shadowcraft Cap.

In response to bigbadfokker, you have the stats messed up. Here's what it should be:

Ebon Mask
- 11 sta (110 HP)
- 1% crit
- 36 AP
- 122 AC

Eye of Rend
- 7 sta (70 HP)
- 2% crit
- 13 str (13 AP)
- 143 AC

So with Ebon Mask, you get trade in 1% crit and 21 AC for 40 HP and 23 AP.
I'd take the Eye of Rend simply because of the extra crit... it really just depends on your playing style. 40 HP isn't worth much if you're going to be getting hit for 5 times that much but the extra 23 attack power is nice for alot of rogues.

when i hit lvl 50 my trainer gave me the starting quest that ends in recieving 1 of 3 items ... one being the ebon mask. i have to go to sunken temple and get key (the azure key)- quest then return it and i will get to choose the item i want. im going to get key today friends helping me out. cant wait to wear the mask. i am goin to keep my helm of fire tho like another said will need for MC for fire resist..

FYI folks- as of 1.9 the Timbermaw faction quest to kill a bunch of the Northern Deadwood tribe memebers does grant a reward similar to the ebon mask-

It's called Helm of the Pathfinder
117 Armor
+17 Stam
+1% Crit Chance

So you gain 60 HP, lose the 36 AP and 5 armor. I know AP rocks (got my complete devilsaur gear) but, considering how useful those boots are for PvP (bc the agi and stam is better than nightscape) I think the decision is easy. Besides why pass up a pvp item you can use for a very long time with a mask you'll replace with the SC cap or Ghostshroud?

this is the best headgear for a rogue at the moment regardless of dagger rogue or sword combat rogue, now here is why:
it has 36ap
1%crit
110hp
shadowcraft cap has:
33ap
0.69%crit
180hp
in case you need the hp shadowcraft could be a better choice, damage wise this cap owns them all. alternatives such as ghostshroud suck big time, since shadowcraft is better than ghostshroud. felhide cap is only useful cuz of fr.
rends head has 1%crit more at the cost of 40hp and 23ap, thus it is obvious that this cap is the best non epich headgear for a rogue

im still wondering on what to get too, but ive seen post saying they got Ebon mask and the next day they got ghostshroud = / and 1 stealth level is like 1 MoD rank, this is for great with maxed MoD cause ive had maxed MoD with nightscape boots that has the same effect and I was invisible. The boots would be great for sneaking in a mob tite instance

So its having a cool looking mask for a few levels

or sneaking boots you will be useing anytime you have to sneak into a instance

Great item overall, glad i picked it. Boots are pretty crappy in the long run as a few greens give you better stats. The back is a nice toy but nothing more realy, for a leveling rogue the head peice is the way to go. Great stats and looks great too, i replaced this at level 60 with the eye of rend. Great item for a leveling rogue but if you want an item that you might hand on to, grab the back as a fun MC jumping toy.

I have a problem here, in that I can't decide which quest piece to pick out. I have Helm of Fire, Seargeant's Cape and Albino Crocscale Boots. I can't decide which one to replace? The boot obviously suck, but is the Mask a better replacement or is the Cape?

If u ask me ebon mask isnt a good helm for too too long at 60 u can go out for out for ghostshroud, shadowcraft cap, Nightslayer, bloodfang anything. On my 60 rogue it only lasted till 55 when i got mask of the unforgiven. But Ebon Mask is an all around cool looking rogue helm =)

For all you people asking which to choose, I was reading over these forums for the exact same reason, and I have to admit that my conclusion is to choose the cape.

The reason being is that eventually you'll get something better than the headpiece, you'll get something better than the boots (and can always buy nightscape boots for when you need the +stealth), but there is NOTHING else in the game that adds to your feather fall.

You dont need to wear it all the time, but when you want to jump down a long ways in stealth (like in stealth instance runs), this will always be handy to have on hand.

Read the posts that are posted on the capes page, Im not the only one who feels that way.

So before you make your choice, just be sure to read the comments under EACH of the items.

I mean omg, how can this even be a disscussion? I chose the mask with my now 60 rogue and it is great, I regret selling it when I got my eye of rend. I mean the 36 attack power is great, it looks cool, 1% crit, some stamina, hay all its missing is some agillity. But really why do u need agillity? You need it for attack power, dodge and crit. This gives u crit, attack power, only thing it is missing is actually some dodge, but who cares? its a rogue mask, rogues are supposed to kill fast and be gone before getting any real damage inflicted on them. As I was reading the posts and one of the last ones said that the cape was better I just couldnt understand... IT SUCKS!
I mean who cares if u get a little more hurt when u fall I mean honestly... and the boots same thing as said earlyer, buy the nightscape from ah or get PvP/SC boots, not that hard.
And to those guys that said it was easy to get another head at level 60, I say (like ive already said a few times in this post :P): WHO CARES?
You can finish the chain of quests and get the mask at level 50, thats 10 levels, for most players its more than 60 hours playtime to level 60, I mean have u ever before had a head that long? PLUS when u get to 60 what should u change it too? Eye of Rend is not as good as this helm (which I figured out too late) SC head is matchable same thing with felhide and Ghostshroud but ofcoarse u cannot compare this to a tier 1 or 2 head.
If u do happen to find
Ghostshroud/Felhide/shadowcraft head in an instance, than u should need it anyway, but first u can look and see if ebon mask or one of the above is better before selling the ebon mask.

I am sorry for any spelling mistakes that may have occured under this post but I atleast hope that u understand what I wrote

there's never been a moment (even in stealth runs) when i thought to myself "damn, i wish i took the duskbat to not hurt me when i fall." granted, i see it's usefulness, but i've never had a better item drop for me for damage dealing than the ebon mask...i still use this thing even though i have the bloodrenched mask as well...ebon mask's +36 atk power and +1 crit is really hard to pass up in a damage dealing situation.

yes, i'll be replacing it when i get my nightslayer cover, but i've had the mask for a REALLLY long time and it's been far more useful.

i think u shouldnt get this mask as the reward imo as u will get better headgear and better boots so u should get the cloak...but thats just my opinion

wow... Helm of fire = head highlander/defiler = boots duskbat drape/parachute cloak(if engineer)= back so cloak is good and the others can be replaced very easy.... Idk the choice is urs :P

If you have helm of fire, pass this by. You get the crit chance almost from the agil on the helm plus the dodge rating, armor, and most of the attk power back. Not to mention that ranged fireball that does 300-350ish (for me). Mask may look cool but its not practical if you have helm of fire.

Ok, here is how i see it:

1. Mask: Yes Ghostshroud is better, but you will not be able to get it for another 5 levels without a run through.

2. Boots: Not as good as Highlander's Leather shoes from AB for 20 simple marks

3. Cape: This is close, but this cape isn't really THAT much better than other 50+ capes.

In the end, I say go with the mask, it will last you at least 5-7 levels

Ok, so we're trying to figure out what to get, right? Well, my simple solution is this...

From the Hall of Honor or the Hall of Legends(excuse me if it's not correct I don't remember which on is the Alliance's) you can get a cloak called Sergeant's Cape which is pretty cick-ass because it's got way good armor and stamina. (There're different versions of it)and at lvl 30 something you get safe fall anyways.

From AB you can get boots that just own these boots Defiler's Leather Boots.

And all I have is a helmet called Chieftain's Headress of the Monkey Chieftain's Headdress, so I don't know about you guys, but I'm going with the mask.

Carelesnes, lvl 50 gnome rogue, Blackwater Raiders

Does this cover the head, or just the face?

ie: is it like a defias mask (badit-o mask), or is it like the fellhide cap (ninja style face and back of head is covered)?

For the love of god dont kill the timbermaws or you will think the drop rate sucks, just pickpocket for the item.

I got it in around 3 picks as did the oher rogues i know. If your trying to get the drop from killing them your gonna need to kill hundreds

I got this today the string of Qs werent that hard, i mean for what you get they arent hard. The hardest thing was getting a group together for ST. Its very nice by the way, one of the best rogue helms you can get, and its not that hard to get :D
