This item has a pretty high proc rate, however, has a 50% chance on successful block to take 1 point of durability.

It has some good points, and some bad points. Namely:

Good:
1) Additional damage = additional aggro.
2) High proc rate.
3) Great for multiple target aggro.
4) Decent stats.

Bad:
1) Can break CC (Sheep, sap, etc.)
2) Can get real expensive, and may not last an entire instance run. (read: raid)
3) Does require you to be a 300 Engineer.

Overall, a great situational piece. Has its ups and downs, and may be good just in certain situations.

I'm a 70 prot tank and I still have one of these babies in my bags at all times, hotkeyed to switch to it in combat at a pinch. It's the sole reason i'm keeping Engineering. It's quite simply one of the most useful items I've ever made as a tank.

Absolutely nothing compares to the damage and AOE aggro that this thing can spew out when you're facing huge hordes of mobs. The birds in Sethekk, the swarms of skeletons in Auchenai, tanking bug adds in TAQ on Fankriss, tanking gauntlets of non-elites. Any kind of situation where you're facing lesser mobs, perhaps 8 or more at once (enough to make thunderclap, cleaving and tab-revenge/sundering not quite good enough to reliably hold aggro), this thing shines. It does more and more damage the more things there are that attack you, as each block returns the damage to -everything- around you, not just the monster who's attack you blocked.

This is not a shield for regular use. You keep it in your bags, and when you get swarmed by hundreds of mobs, swap to this shield, aoe taunt, and the constant blasts of nature damage should keep most things glued to you. The low armor compared to 70 shields, low stamina, and lack of defense make it very situational, but I -urge- any Warrior who's an engineer to make themselves one of these and try it on a large pack of mobs. It's surprisingly cheap to make too, despite being an epic pattern from MC.

The durability can be an issue. 50% chance on a block to lose a durability, so you're looking at 240 blocks on average before it breaks. But, you wont be using this shield to tank an instance with, you'll just have it in your bags for certain pulls, and you can swap to your normal shield in combat once the vasty majority of mobs have been taken out.

Easily the most fun item I own. The lightshow when you're tanking 10-20 mobs at once is worth the cost of the mats alone.

It should be noted that this shield can only "proc" once per second.
Thus once you have enough mobs to cause one block per second, adding more mobs does not increase the damage it puts out per-mob.

EDIT: This cooldown has been removed or shortened with patch 2.4: I use it on the worm pulls in the hallway in Magister's Terrace and it is going off more frequently then before. That hallway alone puts it down to less then 10 durability.

Anyone know how much this costs to repair? I'm about to make one for my pally and I want an idea of wether or not I should use it to aoe farm.

According to Wowhead, the AoE effect upon blocking does 25 to 35 Nature damage.

This is comparable to Petrified Lichen Guard, which at 5 stacks does 60 damage every 3 seconds. This shield is far superior when lots of things are beating you, however the Lichen Guard is a superior farming/AoE tanking shield overall because:

1) This shield will break very quickly in sustained tanking
2) Repairs cost money, cutting into profits made from AoE grinding.

Back in the day, the AOE damage used to scale with +DMG gear. ... At a rate of 1:1

Paladins long before BC with 400-500 +DMG with this on and 10+ mobs were doing DPS compatible to a well geared raid rogue right now.

You can imagine that it got nerfed soon after that first well geared paladin slapped it on and things just died. Quickly.

Comparison with Petrified Lichen Guard:

Petrified Lichen Guard causes a DoT which causes 12 nature damage every 3 seconds and quickly stacks to 5. 12 * 5 / 3 = 20, so the end result of this is that every target beating on you is soon taking 20 DPS.

Force Reactive Disk causes an average of 30 nature damage to every target within 5 yards every time you block. The amount of blocking you'll be doing will vary depending on your block rating and the attack speed of the mobs attacking you, but generally, if you've got a big cloud of mobs in front of you, you can expect a near-constant stream of lightning out of your shield. The more mobs that are attacking you, the more damage each one will take (unlike the Lichen Guard, which does a constant amount of damage against every mob attacking you).

All of this is of course independent of any other reflective damage you may be doing. (Examples: Retribution Aura, Felsteel Shield Spike , Darkmoon Card: Vengeance, etc.)

For killing lots of mobs very quickly, the Force Reactive Disk is the clear winner for as long as it lasts, especially against mobs that die quickly and therefore won't have time for the DoT to stack. You get about 240 blocks out of it before it's time for a trip to the repairman. If you're swimming in cash, get a second one made. Keep the Lichen Guard in your bags for regular use and switch to this when you want a big DPS burst. (If you're tanking a single tough creature, such as a boss, the Lichen Guard is better both for its DoT and for its armor, block rating, and stamina, but you should probably be using a "normal" shield for that anyway.)

Summary: This is an utterly amazing item for tanking engineers, with far better AoE DPS output than the already-cool Petrified Lichen Guard. It doesn't last very long, it costs money to use, and you must be an engineer to equip it, but it's the best shield in the game for quickly burning down large groups of mobs. If you can find an engineer who's a veteran of Molten Core, get them to make you one or more without delay.

Just thought to add that, as a roleplayer, because getting a perfect Mekkatorque outfit was one of the first things I did on my 70 gnome warrior.

Can any paladins comment on the remaining usefulness of this item, in wotlk? As I understand, the damage does not scale with anything, and thus does a flat 30 aoe damage when it procs. That is 240 blocks, meaning 7200 aoe damage.

So is this thing even useful anymore, given consecration and retribution aura?

you can really have some fun I have realized with nature damage in this game. Every one keeps referring to this shield's proc as a "light show" if that is the case why not bump it up to the next level and apply a Crystal Spire to all that AOE, heck. Even poping Ramstien's Lighting Bolts on cooldown will really light up the room. Before you pull anything though be sure to get your fill of Stormchops because more random lighting is always fun. Speaking of more lightning that brings to mind the Thunder Capacitor to mind. What good would all this be if your target had some kind of resistance to nature damage however... I know! lets get some NR de-buffs up there by procking a few Thunderfury swings!

...now we are talking light show.
As of right now, all I'm missing for my epic AOE light show is my Baron binding /sad panda

This shield is still great in WotLK, for AoE threat generation against large groups of monters. Use shield block/holy shield then switch to this shield and the monsters won't ever give you up, and you're not letting down your partners on the raid/instance! If you're an tank and are engineer, have one of these all the time in your bags, it WILL be worth it.
Only use it in groups of 4+ monsters, it's where this shield shows it's true potential, and, as someone posted above, a really nice light show.

Disregard this post, Just got it crafted.

No longer needed as I managed to find a very nice undead to craft this for me.

My lv 60 war now has it :D Good for keeping constant aggro, procs aloooot. However there are downsides ><:

1. can break sheep/saps/hibernates
2. above-average repair bill

upsides:

1. as i said, keeping aggro ;)
2. It has a nice amount of stam and lotsa armor ^^
3. If u play it right, u can use it in a group since the range of the lightening is fairly small...just stay a distance away from the sapped/sheeped/hibernated
4. It spins, it's epic(my first one^^), it shoots lightening, what more could u ask for?

If i'm in a group with no rogues/mages/druids (or if sheeping/hibernating/sapping doens't matter) I use this shield ;). Using it with thunderclap and Ramstein's Lightning Bolts = lightening war^^. However, usually i have to use a more boring blue shield in raid groups. Never the less, tis a great soloing/farming item ;). I just now need to make a few repair bots to bring along with me...

this shield sooo awesome, it uses 100% of your +spell damage, starting with 30, for me as a shaman it procs 4 100dmg on every target in range on every block, crits for 200

so awesome in pvp

I think this shield is best for a protection paladin, with holy shield and redoubt the proc would go off a lot.

Careful when using this to MT anything in MC. Our tank got hit before he hit luci and due to the shield's proc damage it caused the monster to turn grey and we didn't get any loot. Had a gm take care of it but still.. careful.

In general this shield is decent; it has the stamina and good ARMOR but doesn't have defense or any other stats. However, ten to defense increase chance on the block, parry and etc. but + armor decrease hit damage, so if you tanking boss in MC UBRS shield that has ten to def and ten to FP is a must, if you lack of FP and Def gear of course, if you have enough FP and don't have Dir. shield then this one is a good choice.

The bad side of this shield is reliability; it breaks lot often then others.

Just use it on bosses. Most of the time bosses are 1 vs group and any adds are cut down by AOEs. Seems to me its an easy way to hold aggro on a boss without using abilities and rage. Plus it cuts the amount of times you have to repair.

Even most of the time if you are CC, your CC mobs are 15+ yrds away from where the tank pulled the main mob too, that is if you have a good tank pulling.

Still, despite the price tag and situational functionality, it's a fun shield. It breaks fairly easily, but there's nothing stopping you from making more than one of these shields, and swapping to the next one when one breaks.

When my shields procs it does 50 damage CRIT. Is this how much damage it only does or am i doing something totally wrong?

Because one of the mats is a part, the mat cost is a little off. Although this list really isn't much different from whats there.

I use it on a number of occasions with my warrior. The Guantlet in AQ40 for one, just start running backwards and spamming block to hold aggro on all the little bugs, have some other warrior taunt the elites off. Still have to stop and AoE with mages and whatnot, but they say they can definately tell the difference.

I also use it Phase 3 on Nefarian, put that shield up, hit shield wall, Challenging shout and have 50 skellies beat on me for a few seconds. Last time I lost 35 durability in less then 10 seconds.

Thats approximately 70 procs, for an average of 30 damage per mob, 50 mobs. Roughly 100k damage. Or 10k dps.

Its a very exponential shield... the more that hit you, the more you block, AND the more that fit in the AoE damage.

EDIT: Oh... and it did manage to DC a few people that were having issues with the newest patch.... it does that shock animation per mob... lots of procs... GG video card. Unfortunately, the 8 people DCed were all healers. We wiped shortly after from a warrior call + shadowflame without a PW:S up. Nasty business that.

And it seems to last a bit longer, too.. or it could just be the luck of the draw.. either way, this just became my main shield for 10-man runs, and Skullflame became #2 on my list. Sweet!
This shield + holy Shield + redoubt + +spelldmg (holy only.. wish it worked on the shield) = a can of woop-@$$ that T1 mages envy...

Had an effective 231DPS in an UBRS run with me as MT.... the more mobs that hit you, the more you pump out as dmg. Love it!

I'm a 70 Prot/Holy Paladin and as of right now, there is no better shield in the game than this for AoE grinding or holding aggro on multiple mobs.

These shields do break very fast, so I carry 4 of them with me, and am saving mats for a 5th. They're that good.

Skullflame and the Petrified Lichen Guard are good back-ups but as long as it has life in it, Force Reactive Disk is *the* shield to do massive AoE damage when you have a load of mobs on you, like, say, every mob in SM Cathedral :)

Here's to hoping Blizzard puts in an L70 version of this shield...

I made a movie of my AoE pally using the FRD for the first time.. I was laughing so hard i almost let myself die..

I'm going to go ahead and make some more but it is on the gimmicky side as it lasted for only 3 pulls of 17-20 mobs each. Repair cost was 2g after it broke completely.

Wow this Shield looks Simply amazing for my Prtection Pally, he is lv 62 and i guess this combo would be simply awesome

30-40 damage the shield will do with each block, plus 117 Holy Damage and 30% block chance of my Holy Shiled rank 3 plus another 30% block chance of Redoubt Rank 5 plus 6.45% of natural block chance means

64.45% block chance and deal 157 damage for Block! and it improves stamina =D

im going to change my JC for engineer on my pally today i guess ill be easy to powerlevel it with 800g and my epic mount =)

Breaks after about 200 blocks. Completely useless for PVE and there is no reason for a warrior to use a shield in PVP.

This thing is *nuts*

One of my guildies, a paladin, has two (he finds it tends to go red about halfway through any given instance).

He wears as much +spell damage gear as he can (yes, cloth, leather, mail, as well as plate)... does ridiculous damage. We ran a guildie through SM, and the pally ran in, aggroed the whole cathedral, killed them all with consecrate and that shield. I think he did 40k damage in about 2 or 3 minutes, with me basically just keeping a HoT on him.

Grr. Sucks that only engineers can use it. I was figuring I would finally have something I could sell. I mean, the AC dwarfs all other shields in the game, and that passive ability would pretty much guarantee a tank's ability to hold the agro of multiple adds.

Oh well. If I find it I might be able to sell it to pally engineers who don't have it.

I have this shield with my Paladin protection, spellbound with thorium shield spike and when I use the blessing of sanctuary arrival to make 100 damages every block...
and' very good especially in bg or in only with many adversaries against you..
but if you use him/it with very low adversaries he quickly ruins, sinned

I absoultely LOVE this shield. For a MT its a must. The proc helps with agro and it just looks sooooo bad cool. The rumor that it breaks fast is unfounded. I run MC from Luci to Domo without needing it repaired. The idea that it breaks too often is just not true. It may wear faster than say a draconian deflector but it doesnt do the proc that the disc does. I highly reccom this for any MT. As much as i reccom engineering!

I recently had one made for my warrior, and have tanked with it a bit. Assuming you spam shield block, this thing will go off every 3-6 seconds, generating a lot of extra threat, great for saving rage early in a pull and putting aggro on all the mobs. The range is short enough you aren't likely to break sheep/slept mobs unless you are standing on top of them. Its good for about 2 hours of tanking in my experience before it needs to be repaired. The cost isn't too bad considering its quality and fun.
While this shines for multi-tanking, its not something I use on bosses. Just bring another shield like Draconian for bosses and to swap to if/when this goes out and you'll be fine.

I won the drop in MC and proceeded to make this shield the very next day. I wanted to find out if any of the myths were true about this shield.

My block rate is 10.80% and this shield hits everything withing 10 yards for 25-35 magic based damage every time it blocks (critted for 50 about 8% of the time.) Sometimes it does take durability hits when I block.

To give you a much better idea, I grinded on elementals in Felwood with a friend for 3 hours straight. I was tanking 3-6 mobs nearly all the time. The shield procced ALOT. It took a full 3 hours before the shield finaly fell to 0 durability. The shield DOES NOT BREAK like jumper cables or target dummies. It simply ends up at 0 durability. The total cost of repair was 1g 75s.

Just for kicks, I added a thorium shield spike rather then the +7 stamina enchant. Whichever mob I blocked took 45-65 damage. Remember that when multiple mobs are on you, you can block hits from any of them which leads to more damage.

My old shields were Skullflame and Draconian Deflector. After using the Force Reflective Disk, I have a very hard time ever touching either one of those again (except when I need fire resist.) The AC, the stamina and the proc are way too much fun.

Need to take people through the Lyceum in BRD but don't have a mage, or the mage dies too easily? Have a holy paladin strap one of these on, turn on Retribution Aura, and Consecrate. I haven't tested it in the AoE room in Scholomance yet, but with 6k+ armor, you can get a lot more survivability than a mage.

Not saying it's anywhere near as useful overall as Instant Arcane Explosion, but it's definitely got its PvE uses if you got enough mobs beating on you.

Ive had this shield for three days now. and I love it.

The Aoe only hits for 40-50 damage, but it has a huge threat count. I found myself able to pull aggro from furry warriors and rogues with the Aoe alone.

not to mention, that the Aoe doesnt have a target limit, as long as the mobs are within an 8 yard radius or so.

As for its durability. it stays in good shape longer than one would think. I farmed SM GY, (three full runs) before I had to go repair.

The critics of this shield need to see it in action before judging it.
