Welcome to Wowhead's Best in Slot Gear list from Pre-Patch Sunwell Plateau for Blood Death Knight Tank in Wrath of the Lich King Classic. This guide will list the recommended gear for your class and role, containing gear sourced from raids, dungeons, PvP, professions, BoE World drops, and reputations.
Best in Slot Gear for Blood Death Knight Tanks in Pre-Patch
Stats
Defense & Resilience
- You want the bare minimum; enough to make yourself uncrittable. This number changes based on the amount of each stat you have, and requires a deeper dive. If you have no resilience at all, you will want at least 490 Defense. While this is the cap for being uncrittable, any excess Defense is then converted into avoidance stats, so don't be afraid to go above this cap if needed.
Stamina
- Stamina is the name of the game for Blood Death Knights, you always want to stack as much as possible. There are multiple interactions with health for Blood Death Knights, specifically

Armor
- Blood Death Knights do not use shields, so you want to be stacking as much armor as possible for the most damage reduction.
Strength
- Blood Death Knights gain Parry rating from strength, like they gain Dodge from Agility. However, Blood has a lot more interactions with strength due to talents like

which brings it value above agility.
Hit
- Wrath brings a bunch of changes to stats. Hit suppression is removed, so you'll aim for 8% hit for your special melee attacks. However, Hit also now counts towards Spell hit, which is important for Blood Death Knights as most of our threat generating abilities are spells. 17% is needed to not get a resist on any raid boss. , but these do not stack unfortunately. You also get 3% spell hit from

. Taking in account the bonus 6% Hit, you'll want to aim for 11% Spell hit. Physical hit rating adds more to spell hit, then spell hit rating at level 70. 12.62 hit rating counts as 1% spell hit, and 14.79 hit rating counts as 1% hit. Keep an eye on this balance to ensure you're not too far over for Hit.
Expertise
- Since Blood Death Knights are the only 2-handed tank, you'll want to aim not only for the 6.5% soft cap for dodge, but also the 14% for parry's. It's important you don't get parried on multiple Death Strikes in a row and die.
Agility/Dodge/Parry
- As stated above, agility gives you dodge. However, Wrath changes the values of these stats, and adds an ever increasing diminishing return. In TBC, avoidance stats had increasing returns in their value. For example, each 1% dodge provided more value for survival than the previous 1%. This resulted in some tanks scaling exceptionally faster than other tanks. This increasing value is what led to the Sunwell Radiance Aura being added. Now with Pre-patch and through Wrath, each point of an avoidance stat provides less of a % increase than the previous to counteract the infinite scaling problem of TBC tanks. In practice, this means that avoidance stats on gear have roughly the same constant value for tank survival across the entire expansion - rather than fluctuating.
Body Armor for Blood Death Knight Tanks in Pre-Patch
We know Pre-Patch is only going to be 4 weeks long, meaning the chances you obtain every item in this BIS list are relatively low. Below you'll find alternative options for each slot, but ultimately you'll end up wearing whatever you're able to get your hands on. The biggest issue with gearing in the pre-patch is that most plate tanking gear will have block on it. Luckily, Spell Power converts to strength, so it opens up some other viable options.

Sigils for Blood Death Knight Tanks in Pre-Patch
Sigils are a new item type added in Pre-Patch and Wrath, Sigils are just Death Knight specific Relics that take up your ranged weapon slot. They work the same as Druids' and Paladins' Relics. You're only eligible to get one in Pre-Patch that is worthwhile, and that is: Sigil of the Dark Rider. It increases the damage of your Blood Strike and Heart Strike by 90.

, the correct cost in prepatch is 5700 Honor Points and no marks.
Also the 2H brutal gladiator weapons does not require arena points but rather 19000 Honor.
