A very excellent staff that drops from Lord Valthalak, who can only be summoned by people on the very last leg of the Tier 0.5 quest series (or by people who have completed the whole series).
The catch is that Valthalak is the hardest boss in the game before you hit the 20/40 man raids. I would say he is MUCH more difficult than most of the 20-man raid bosses.
If you have the opportunity to get this staff, jump at it, but I would recommend getting the Rod of the Ogre Magi (
https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=18534#z0z
) if you're looking for a well balanced DPS caster staff.

Hes not too terribly hard. You just have to learn the fight. The way we did it was have 1 MT on him, melee dps within range dps, rogues on the shades as soon as they spawn, then back to dps. Other classes (locks, mages, hunters) can also help with the shades. After he gets to about 50%, the shades stop spawning, and his DPS increases to about the level of a MC boss. At about 15%, you have to DPS him HARD, he starts spamming AoE shadowbolts every second or so.
Once you get him past the shade phase, his defense/armor seem to drop dramatically. You will need a good bit of healing for this fight, atleast 2 priests/druids, and 2 pallies, perhaps more.
The fight does take a bit to learn, especially with the new 10 man cap. It took our group with mostly Tier2 epics and other BWL/AQ goodies 3 tries to figure it out and get him down.

In the new Tier .5 quest line, you have to summon two bosses in existing instances: DM East, Scholo, LBRS, Scarlet Strat and UBRS. It's random as far as which one you have to summon except for the final one in UBRS.
Either do the quests yourself, catch someone on this step and tag along, or find someone who has done all the quests, as you get a brazier at the end to summon any of them as many times as you want.
This drops from Lord Valthalak in The Beast's room in UBRS.

The Soulbound Brigade on Smolderthorn has run this guy twice. The first time it took us two trys. The first we got him tom one percent adn wiped. Thes second attempt we downed him easily.
On the second time we wiped at 5 percent but we had 2 people that had never done it or even tried. Then we tried again and owned him.
The main thing it make sure you kill his shades. These guys will &*!@ you up if you dont have plan to take care of them. The other thing is after i think 10 percent his hits are hard as hell soooooo you need to have multiple healers and they need to have been conserving mana.
We owned him and are goign to start running him more often not only for the quests but for the staff. We are actually going to start running it for other guilds that cant form a group or cant down him. Hit us up.

Class Balance
4 rogues, 1 priest, 1 mage, 1 hunter, 1 druid, 2 warriors.
(This works best, though due to whatever reasons, similar classes can be substituted)
Gear:
This fight is quite easy with blues/scattered epics. The tank needs to be well geared however.
General:
-This fights hardest Stage is Stage One.
-Keep mana drains up.
-Only Main Tank should recieve heals.
-This fight takes place in the Beasts Room of UBRS.
-It is for your Teir 0.5 quests.
-It is an easy fight if done correctly.
-Bring 2 each for every attempt.
-If everyone does/has what is listed here, he will go down.
Stages!
There are 3 stages....
Stage One
Outline:
Most Rogues kill adds, only the main tank should take damage... if anyone else does its probably a wipe. Dps boss down to 40% to procede into Stage 2.
Fight:
He spawns with 111k hp and 2.8k mana.. 3 rogues and dps warrior kill Specters (summoned adds)
QUICKLY
, if they completly channel their stunning spell on you, you will die instantly at the end, no matter what HP you have. 2 healers keep the main tank up, you will be stunned from the adds and the other healer must take over, hopefully the rogues and dps warrior are doing their job, and you will only be stunned for a few seconds. The tank just tanks Lord Valthalak, no tricks, just hold aggro. 1 hunter mana drains/dps Lord Valthalak, mage/odd rogue dps boss.
Other notes:
Only tank on boss untill mana is fully drained (ALOT LIKE SNAKE BOSS IN ZUL'GURUB); turn gamma on video options up so you can see the Specters.
Stage Two
Outline:
This stage begins at 40%. Specters no longer spawn, Valthalak will get buffed, he will hit for alot more. This stage ends at 15%.
Fight:
All DPS on Spectres will move onto Lord Valthalak, then its just like fighting any other mob... no tricks, just steady DPS. You will want to drink a the second this stage begins.
Other Notes:
Keep the boss mana drained, conserver mana/rage through this stage as much as possible. The potion you have drunk at the beginning of this stage is for Stage Three.
Stage Three
Outline:
Final stage. Begins at 15% and ends at 0%. Boss will start shooting many medium damage shadowbolts. No Spectres spawn in this stage.
Fight:
This is a burn. Warriors should be spamming execute the second he hits 20%, everyone else blow your cooldowns and bring him down. Be alert and ready to drop another on this stage. Healers should still be focusing on MT, your potions will hold you throughout the burn.
Other Notes:
Keep him mana drained. Full dps... save your cooldowns for this.
Loot!
Other then your actual teir 0.5, there is an excelent rogue/dps warrior cape, and the leet lookin staff. Many more items may be availible for lootin, but I'm not here to spectulate about what they could be.

You will need:
3-4 members who can stun/interrupt/CC undead at a moments notice
2-3 switch healers
1-2 dedicated healers
1 priest or 1-2 paladins for shadow protection
1 tank
1 rogue with spell alert, a keen eye for their combat log/good attention to what Val is doing
lots of ranged dps IMO
Optimal group IMO:
2 warriors, 1 rogue, 1-2 druids, 1 priest, 1-2 paladin/shaman, 1 warlock, 2 mages/hunters
Epics are not required. The group that downed him was 90% composed of blue-wearing, but experienced players. It is a challenge. You will use health/mana potions, healthstones, and you MT will find a greater shadow protection potion useful.
Consumables help. Flasks are not required. If everyone does their job potions and bandages will be the biggest things consumed.. maybe *one* shadow prot potion.
Lord Valthalak is a big guy with a staff in the Beast's room in UBRS, lots of shadow damage and phat loots. The fight is 3 phases, the last 2 happen at 40% and 15%.
Preparation -
Buff up fully! Including Shadow Protection from your priest. Aggro shouldn't be a problem since your dps will be 1/2 on Valthalak and 1/2 on the shades (not litterally! but it will work out that way, everyone does both val and shades). Get healthstones from your warlock and save them for phase 3.
Phase 1 -
* He starts out with a humble quarterstaff, don't bother disarming it.
* Shades will appear every 10-15 seconds to kill your team. Their melee is weak, but they use a pink beam that will STUN its target for 10 seconds and then deal over 8000 shadow damage. It is everyone's responsibility except the MT to CC or kill every shade quickly.
* EVERYONE must be prepared to use their instant attacks/cooldowns to kill the shades.
* The priest should hotbar rank 1 shackle. Use this at every opportunity to shackle a shade.
* The rogue MUST watch Valthalak's spell casting emotes. If he begins to cast "shadow wraith" then KICK to interrupt the casting.
* One mana-draining sting from a hunter will help. Direct mana draining is not neccessary if the rogue kicks.
Phase 2 -
* At 40% Valthalak will bring out his staff of command. It is very large with 2 ornate heads with large glowing centers. DISARM this weapon to greatly reduce his dps.
* Switch healers should take over as much as possible to let the priest regen a little for phase 3.
* At 20% DO NOT burn your best dps abilities. Wait until phase 3.
* There is some talk of an AOE effect in phase 2, but as a healer I didn't take too much note of it. If this is confirmed and it is 360 then all melee should move out.
* Near the end of phase 2 Valthalak MUST be moved against the WEST WALL of the beast room. Then the tank should run to the opposite side of Valthalak. So first the tank runs to the wall, then towards the hay pile, and then after Valthalak is positioned move slightly to the middle of the room.
Phase 3 -
* At 15% Valthalak goes ZOMG Kazzak supreme-mode and shadow bolt volleys every 2 seconds.
* Your positioning in phase 2 establishes a safe-zone which will be out of LOS and allow everyone to duck out & bandage. MOST IMPORTANTLY this will allow the priest to continue to slam gheal on the main tank without interrupt.
____|..Val
____|......tank
____|
____|
____|
f%%%
i%% <-- safe zone
r%
e
* Noone gets healed besides the MT and maybe the melee dps if you have mana. Everyone who can should be dpsing in the SAFE ZONE and bandaging.
* If you have a greater shadow prot potion and you need it, then use it.
* EXECUTE NOW... do it, shadowburn, innervate the priest (so they can heal the melee dpsers), and burn all your cooldowns and do maximum dps.

For some reason, every group that i am in is finding it impossible to stay ahead of his heals. Dps seems to be high, but I have questions...
1. Is he immune or resistant to 'lock DOTs?
2. Are his heals anyway connected to the adds? i.e. are they "blood drinking" for the boss?
3. Is there an animation for his heal or is it instant?
I have run this guy 10 times, no teir 1 or 2 stuff (Blizz can bite me if it's needed for this guy) and the most we've done is 23 %, but by that time it was the big OOM all around. The problem that we keep running into is getting him down past 85% :_(

I currently have the Rod of the Ogre Magi and am a Fire Mage with Ignite. I'm considering getting this staff because of the higher +dmg and the +1% to hit; but it would mean sacrificing the 1% to crit from the Rod, plus some nice stats. Your thoughts?

Well, maybe i can guess.
First, like T0, T0.5 is no "Stat-Set", it's a Set because it looks like. The bonuses are hardly worth to mention.
Second, the last step offers you the chest piece, which is easily compareable to T1, some to even T2 for specific purposes (f.e. warrios T0.5 chest is much better for dealing damage than T2).
Means : Yes, for me running MC like Maraudon, completing this can be very interesting to me, even if I am well suited with T1/2 Equipment.
But, well.... if Blizzard "really" wanted a partially epic set for blue equipped casual gamers.... they failed.
And the Staff.... well, i suppose this to be the best Spell-DD-staff to get outside a raid-instance. While healers got other choices (and do not benefit from spellHit at all, your tank will never 'resist' your heal ^^) i guess this is best suited in 'locks or mages hands. Oh well, don't forget Hunters, eh ? ^^

This is one of the coolest looking weapons in the game. I was giddy after we took this guy down and he dropped this for the mage in our group (who was also completing his tier 0.5).
My guild recently started MC, and most of us have between 0-3 pieces of tier 1. We're far from "epiced out," but this fight is easy if you have some skill. This is very, very similar to the Venoxis fight in ZG, btw.
Here's our strategy:
Phase1 - drain mana to prevent shadow drain life lightning bolt thing. You can theoretically interupt this as well, but we had limited success with this. Best way is to just have
everybody do ranged damage
to it in phase 1, kill the shadow assasins as soon as they appear, and have the lock/hunter
drain mana
. After mana was drained, we went in for melee (I'm a rogue).
Phase2 - we didn't know he could be disarmed, so our MT just ate the dmg (note our MT on this run has no epic armor at all, but good blues) and we spammed heals. Again,
ranged damage only
this phase, as his weapon does a shadow damage cleave/whirlwind thing that destroys melee DPS (again, I'm a rogue, and no, shadow resist gear doesn't help - I had ~180 equipped).
Phase3 - aoe shadowbolt chaos, but even without shadow prot. pots (we brought them and were saving them for our second attempt, which we didn't end up needing) you can
burn him down
fast enough. Only two people in our raid (me and fury warrior) died. Just have everybody lay into him at this stage its not too hard.
The whole Tier 0.5 quest chain is about SKILL, which is why I loved doing it. We did the 45 minute baron run months ago with ZERO epics (unless you count the crappy tier 0.5 gloves). I ended up running it for lots of peeps in my guild, and the best runs were as fast as 35 minutes. Impossible without ventrillo, btw.
Anyway, yeah, don't be discouraged by your lack of gear or use lack of gear as an excuse for why you can't do the tier 0.5 quests. These are all very doable.

Did LV get buffed witht he 1.11 patch? He seems alot harder than before, the shades spawn alot faster and it is all out chaos in the 3rd stage. I had a group of full tier one and we attempted this 5 times with no success.

this boss is doable, you just need to know what your doing
everytime i do this boss it takes me at least 20 minutes to explain.
for stage one all ranged should focus on valthalak unless a spectral starts stunning from close to him. then at that time they should switch targets and take it down quickly. all melle dps except for one rogue should stay back towards the ranged and keep the spectrals that come back there at bay.
the biggest part about this guy is that the life drain chain healing spell will distroy your self-esteem it turns a boss that has 115,000 health into a boss with 250,000+ if you do have too many people close to him.
stick it out is the key to the first part. Make sure everyone is going steady up to 40% health
at that time he stuns everyone and pulls out a big weapon that does a ton of meelee dps. the mt should instantly disarm him and all dps should focus on val. during this the ranged dps should spread out as much as possible
at 15% he starts spamming aoe shadow bolts. this is when you start blowing all your cooldowns when this part starts everyone should be ready with pots HS's and possibly greater shadow resis pots (these help a lot)by this time all the ranged dps should be far away and ready to kite the boss far away to possibly get in that final crit to kill him..
all mellee dps will be dead
if anyone can show me a video where no one on melle dps dies i might bow down and make you my new god.
well hope that helps
I downed him doing this strat and got my heroism with people from my guild in most just Tier 0 gear and the such so dont say its undoable cause it clearly is.. and he drops some pretty phat loots too so gl and hope you get him

Having druids for this fight was VERY helpful.
Cat form DPS to kill shades like rogues (yes, yes - less DPS than a real rogue but plenty for this fight). Then they popped out with a full pile of mana to innervate the priest(s), rez the dead, and then heal the Tank/groups in Phase 2 and 3.
We had 2 droods (one feral, one resto) for our recent win.
And yes, moonfire spam DID help at the 2% mark... :)

first i <3 this staff. everyone says it might as well be epic. i kinda agree with how rare this drop is. 10 man, 2 warlocks including myself, shadow priest, paladin in full tier, rougex2, hunter, druid, mage, warrior and i forget the last person. err anyway, no one was epic except the paladin. we wiped 4 times, paladin left, got us shadow protection potions came back, we took them all, heres how it went down.
get a warlock to buff everyone with invisibility seeing. throw up a shadow pro aura from the pally or prayer from priest whatever.
i never fought him before, so i didn't know wtf was goin on. mana drain DOES make a difference in the first stage. 2 mana drains from me and he was out of mana. with the invisibility seeing you can see his minions. easy kills, have 2-3 fighters deal with the minions, cause if you don't they stun you and if your stunned long enough you auto die.
i didn't know this the first few times, i don't think any of us did. we dealt. we had 2=3 players on the minions, i helped kill them while i conserved mana for DOTs.
second stage is same, except more minions. have to watch the minions they are MORE important to kill then the boss himself. full dps and heals out the ass.
at stage 3 i recommend you sac your walker if your a warlock, or throw up a bubble and use shadow ward or whatever you do to not die DO IT. he casts instant shadow bolts at everyone repeatedly. like 3 in 5 seconds. my potion was used, my shadow ward was used and my VW bubble too, but we killed him with like 2-3 people standing, DOTs FTW.
staff is worth it. complimented on it everywhere i go when people check it out, and it just looks SWEET.

If your a healer dont bother wit this staff, the cannon boss in strat has a 20% chance or so to drop the staff called redemption, it was added in 1.11 or 1.12, its a 10 spirit 61+ healing staff, and its level 56
much better and easier to get if your a healer

My suggestion for Lord V would be as follows.
Ranges DPS.
Think of it was two phases not 3.
Phase 1 100% - 40%
Tank on Lord V, Shadow Resistance gear.
Mages/Locks/Hunters DPS him down. (Mages - use Instant attacks on the Assasins that spawn during this phase, they have about 1.1k hp.)
(Warlocks - If you have Nightfall up, use it on a Assasin, continue to dps.)
(Hunters - Use Multi Shot, once you see them spawn doing good DPS and damage to the adds as you go)
Anyone Melee works on the Assasins making sure they do not even reach the Raid.
I view this fight like Jin'do as anyone should, it shows great form, and communication.
Assasins >--- Drains >--- Lord V
The above applied to everyone but the Main tank and healers.
Rogues - Be on watch for the Blood that rises from Lord V's feet, this heals him. Shocks Kicks and Counter-Spell works.
Lord V also has a Mana drain he will randomly cast on one member. Usually the healer, this is why people go WTF I'm out of mana already?
This drain seems to be around 2000 mana, dealing no mana, but rendering you useless.
Best thing to do is always Fade as much as you can, and if you get drained, let someone know, keep a Super Mana Pot handy, nothing specail! Anything more and you spent too much for a simple fight.
After around 5 minutes of this semi-long fight.
Finally 40% and the Assasins are gone.
after this. Shamans/Druids are now the main healers for about 30 seconds as priests regain mana, they do it the best, regaurdless of what you say.
Go light, just get you and a shaman shareing the healing, Spam Heal Rank (2) and have them do their lowest but effective heal, around 500-700 healing for shaman is sufficiant.
I heal 900-1.100 regular with Heal Rank (2) for 172 mana, and with a shaman healing for about the same or less at the same time, thats Greater heals Chained with low mana cost, Effectively useing your mana to save and last through the seeming-long fight.
The shadow Prot buff should be enough to ward out most of the 300-500 damage Shadow bolts randomly targeting party members. Shaman, I always expect them to be useing their Grounding totems, but if you have a newbie, quietly pm them. " GROUNDING TOTEM DERR! " And hope they get the message. Say you have 2 Shaman, rotateing their G-totem, you avoid almost 2000 Damage every 5 seconds, making this fight go by smoothly.
This is my view of the fight as a priest. No pots but a Super mana Pot, no one else needed anything, And it all goes smooth if the party can notice a shadow bolt and a shaman can drop the correct totem. Also, a shaman with mana tide (I know 90% of pug shaman like to be Enhancement) but search for them!. Druids! enjoy your Intervate! Screw the others and enjoy the mana, if they are good enough, they wont be needing it. You Druids have it for a reason :).
