This quest is proof of the delightful class-specific quest gear mechanic being implemented in the upcoming expansion Mists of Pandaria. Despite the inevitable complaints because of simplification, this is regardless a lovely addition to the game.

The "smoke trails" are in fact campfires. Just get near them and they should give credit.

I had big problems getting credit on the occasional fire so thought I'd post the solutions.

First - run back down the trail that leads to the smoke, then run back again - this worked in most instances.

Second - old faithful log out and in can fix it.

Thirdly - I found that being in a party could prevent credit. Leaving party, then logging out and in fixed it.

Such choices! As a prot warrior I had my choice of

- A 2H mace (nice if I planned to be DPS at 90 but I'm staying tank)
- A 1H sword with hit and expertise
- A 1H sword with hit and expertise

...

I suppose if you were trying to dial-in an exact expertise/hit amount it's nice that the two swords vary a bit, but I can't help but wonder if one of those was meant to be a 1H axe or mace instead.

I had trouble seeing the smoke trails until I was pretty close to them. I just headed towards the quest objective on my map and kept an eye out for the smoke. Once you see the smoke it's easy to finish.

Text for each fire:

Eastern:
Xiao Tu says: They fought over their food supplies. It looks like rather than sharing their food, someone destroyed it all. Why would they do that?

Northwestern:
Xiao Tu says: Look, I see some of Suna's things! She must have made camp here. But where is she?

Southern:
Xiao Tu says: It's the yaungol chief, slain just like the rest. Seems that he could not keep order in the final fight.

Western:
Xiao Tu says: From what I can tell, there were no sides in this fight. Why would the yaungol kill each other in a free-for-all?

The southern smoke location is not where the marker shows it to be on the map. The marker points you to a hut up an incline on a hill, but it is actually directly downhill at a bonfire.

The northwest smoke trail is actually northeast of the quest giver. This threw me off for about 10 min.

For those who can't figure it out (even with coordinates like myself), go to the quest hub where you got the quest then look into the direction of which you need the Smoke Trail. Then travel over to the smoke trail and wait there for a second to have the guy "interact" with the smoke trail and examine it. :)

As a rogue, there isn't anything likable about this quest. I for one always have problems getting him to notice the smoke (run around it, away and back up to it, stand there for a few seconds....) Add into it the fact that he doesn't stealth and aggros everything, and you've got a moderately annoyed stealther.

This was a tough one, I manged to find the Northwest smoke-plume tucked away up the hill north north west of the camp.

If you cannot seem to get smoke stack to complete in your quest, be sure you still have Xiao Tu following you arround. If he isn't, you're going to have a hell of a time trying to get this quest completed. Leave the area, and come back, and he will pop back up.

since patch 5.2 this quest can now not be completed. Turning up at each of the locations gives absolutely no credit what so ever.

Make sure you have your companion with you, or you get no credit at all..if he dies or goes missing, go back to where the quest giver is, and pick him back up again.

Make sure you have Xioa Tu with you (its easy to lose him) or the correct points won't register. If lost he is beside the quest giver just click on him & good to go.

Of all the quests I've ever done I detest this one the most. The 'smoke' you're looking for is not immediately clear, lots of areas are on fire. If the NPC isn't with you, you don't get credit. If you're on a ground mount the mob density means you're constantly fighting something while you hunt for the smoke you're supposed to investigate. It isn't that this quest is buggy, it's that it's poorly implemented. I voted against it by abandoning it, it's worth missing the rest of the chain not to put up with it.

i think this quest is bugged. i found the sources of the smoke but got no credit! this is a stupid quest! :(

Do not forget to talk to the NPC so he follows you!

You only get quest credit if the NPC (Xiao Tu) follows you to the locations of the smoke!

Thank you for helping me to find the southern smoke, I lost my companion and had to do it again.
Carbonite is my only addon which I use for quest tracking and one tenth is accurate enough for coords, then

If you got here but couldn't find the quest giver, that's because you need to do a few other quests before this one is available. Find Taran Zhu, north of Longying Outpost, and do his quest line until you find Xiao Tu.

Paladins and Warriors that are interested in Transmog and not upgrading their weapon on this quest might want to take Hatred's Bite as it's the only unique colouring of its model from the options.

If you're here in remix and can't figure out how to complete this quest make sure you spoke to Xiao Tu so he can follow you and investigate the camp.

He also despawns if you leave the area or if you go into a dungeon using the queue so you'll have to go talk to him again.

If you're playing Pandaria Remix right now, you might see that Xiao Tu will absolutely refuse to come with you to the southern smoke signal. He has no problem whatsoever going anywhere else in the camp - you can mount up, fly, whatever you want - he will go there and you will get credit for all of the locations. It doesn't matter if you fly away and come back - he'll be there waiting. But the southern location? Nope. He will vanish and go back to the camp if you try to get there. There is only one way to get him there - You have to reacquire him at the camp....and RP walk (toggle walk mode) alllll the way there. Absolutely infuriating.

Speak to Xiao Tu.
Don't mount up.
Run to each area with him - stop while he is examining. Give the panda time to ... ponda.
This way, you won't lose him.
