This stuff is pretty much everywhere near the base, mostly near the green lava

Ashes are all over outside the base you can pick them up everywhere. Easy.

Go directly south of Shadowmoon Village to the little lake of lava at about 30, 37.

At 38, 42 there is a whole line of them with maybe 1-2 mobs guarding them. You can get at least 10-12 running in a line around the ridge line stopping every 5 yards to pick up the ash.

Since these spawn near the green lava pools, you can also complete the quest "What Strange Creatures" (http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=10660). It involves collecting the spleens of Felfire Diemetradons.

This is the start of the Teron Gorefiend quest chain, for the Horde.

This chain begins differently depending on whether you're Alliance (A) or Horde (H):

Alliance - starts in Wildhammer Stronghold from Zorus the Judicator:
1. (A) A Ghost in the Machine
2. (A) Harbingers of Shadowmoon
3. (A) Teron Gorefiend - Lore and Legend

Horde - starts in Shadowmoon Village from Chief Apothecary Hildagard:
1. (H) A Haunted History
2. (H) Spectrecles
3. (H) Teron Gorefiend - Lore and Legend

At this point the chain splits into three parts which can be done in any order (and by both factions):
4a. Divination: Gorefiend's Cloak
4b. Divination: Gorefiend's Truncheon
4c. Divination: Gorefiend's Armor

After collected Gorefiend's stuff and returned it to the spirit, you will get:
5. (A) Teron Gorefiend, I am...
5. (H) Teron Gorefiend, I am...

For this final quest, Gorefiend becomes your "pet" and you control him using a pet bar. Having used him to kill Karsius, you return to Zorus or Hildagard to claim your reward. Choose from:
Evoker's Helmet of Second Sight (cloth DPS headpiece)
Stealther's Helmet of Second Sight (leather melee headpiece)
Druidic Helmet of Second Sight (leather magical headpiece)
Stalker's Helmet of Second Sight (mail +AP headpiece)
Shamanistic Helmet of Second Sight (mail +dmg headpiece)
Overlord's Helmet of Second Sight (plate DPS headpiece)

the quest "Chief Apothecary Hildagard" does not start this quest line. i got THIS quest without doing it. i just went to shadowmoon village at level 67 and this quest was available.

This quest has NO PRE-REQ, you could get the q without the "Chief Apothecary Hildagard" Q.

Did anyone else notice the nodes can spwan IN the lava? But then you can't collect them because the lava intrrupts you. -_-; lame

All/Most of the ash seems to be in the lava making the quest take much longer than it should to complete

I haven't seen a single ever burning ash node out of the lava just now on my priest when I was looking near the horde base. I then went looking around the deathforge as suggested and found loads of nodes. then when I came back I found more nodes around the edges of the lava near the horde base.

How are you supposed to get the nodes inside the lava?... the lava always interrupts me.

The lava didn't interupt me but I came to the conclusion this quest is a waste of time. Then I stuck it out making countless circles around the lava, collected my 15th piece and moved onto the Sketh'lon Wreckage quest, and saw tons of ash around that area! Don't concentrate on this quest, EVER. Just do others and pick up ash as you go.

When your done with this quest, don't be like me and destroy your Spectrecles, you apparently need them later on to do at least some of the Gorefiends chain

Thanks for the great posts!

I'm kinda back-filling this quest for the helm reward for xmog...
I can see the quest items, there are tons, at all of the listed locations...
But, the are un-clickable to me.
Anybody know, did I simply miss something incredibly obvious, or is it bugged, or removed?

Description

Have you felt the cold chill? Perhaps what you thought was a hand on your shoulder? That was not your mind playing tricks on you, <race>. The land is haunted. Ghosts litter the landscape, stuck here for all eternity.

Would you like to see them? Are you sure about that? These types of things tend to change a person - and not for the better.

Very well, I will need you to collect for me the ever-burning ash that is found near any of the fel lava pools of western Shadowmoon. Anywhere near green lava...
