It might be worth noting that I could not use the Technoscryers after I completed the quest, so make sure you do it before you finish!

It worked today! No tricks involved. All points spawned near the cave.

I cannot scry while mounted because apparently it is impossible to wear a pear of goggles while on a mount.

Gnomes are going to be quite disappointed.

If the quest list doesn't give you a button to turn on the goggles then you can bring up the scrying mode via the chat command:

/use technoscryers

You do not have to have the goggles in your bag, or even own them at all (i destroyed mine long ago).
