The log book drops from Caretaker Smithers. He is in the barn, up on top of the entryway.

If you run into the farmhouse scouring the floor for the logbook in vain like I did, look up. The guy that drops it is above the entrance, so run to the back of the farmhouse and you'll see him. Of course, if you're not doing this at 80 like I am then you will probably aggro him and not have this problem :/

You go into the farmhouse...round the bend of the entryway...and look into an empty room.

Suddenly from above you (and most likely BEHIND you) this huge Worgen (Caretaker Smithers) jumps down on you and attacks!

Yes...it startled me too! LOL

He is also holding a lantern that breaks when he swings it at you...and this sets the inside of the farmhouse on fire (more for effect...you won't burn).

Upon killing him...you get his logbook.

FYI: If you are a rogue, de-stealth. He can't jump you if he can't see you! :)

Thanks, I'm a rogue and went in barn as stealth hence why I didn't get jumped the first time. :)

if u r lvl 85 like me just stand under him and jump up and down without having target on him then ull get aggro and he will jump down and u kan kill him after he landed ! if u kill him on the shelf or in mid air he cant be looted !

This quest has a big bug in it.
I killed him and i couldnt loot the corpse.
It said that i was to far away, when i was standing right next to him.
Big fail to blizz....

This since he's considered to be the "caretaker" of Mr. Burns.

Inordinately hard for a level 14 fire mage questing gear. I died 7 times trying to do it and then finaly remembered I had health pots and managed to kill him right before I died the 8th time and had to run back to loot.

Difficulty stems from push back from the DoT; not being able to pre-cast Pyroblast; the initial knockdown he does; and mages being squishy. Not really the ideal quest to put in one of the zones where new characters have barely gotten to chose a spec.

The quest text says to search the farmhouses, but in fact Caretaker Smithers is in the barn/stable at (45,54).
As a high level character completing this quest, here are some tips (some of them apply to low levels too!):
- Caretaker Smithers is standing on a beam near the roof, so you will miss him unless you look up. He drops the quest item (namely, Smithers' Logbook) once killed.
- I would highly advise not attacking him (as a high level character) with any ability/spell as there is the potential to one shot him and not being able to reach him and loot him.
- The caveat to the above point is if you are an engineer and possess a Loot-A-Rang - in that case it doesn't matter that he is out of range!
- If you are a priest, levitate should bring you into range of his corpse.
- Some classes can go to the target (e.g. Rogues with Shadowstep) or bring the target to them (e.g. Death Knights with Death Grip)
- A non-engineer can jump at the bottom of the wall he is standing on to aggro him and cause him to come down.
- Alternatively, any ranged/AoE attack that does no damage (e.g. debuffs the target, interrupts) can aggro him down so you can kill him. Some examples include Wind Shear and Counterspell
- If you kill him out of range, and are not an engineer or a priest, you can jump on the barrel up against the wall, and then on to the shelf on the wall, and will be within range to loot.
- Another alternative is to pull another mob from outside, into the room and kill it. AoE looting will allow you to access the loot table for Caretaker Smithers.

Priest here. Died a few times before remembering I have psychic scream. That gave me a moment to hit necessary shielding and attacking keys. :) And still, all I could do was frantically attack-attack-attack (and heal), and only upon seeing the dead body I realised it actually worked. :)

This guy is pretty vicious. He’s a nasty attacker. He hits the hardest out of all low level quest mobs.
