I wonder what Ivan was going to say in the completion text? There's one particular questline involving an item that begins with Sc (the Scythe of Elune). I wonder if this is a hint that plot will continue.

Part 1 (Into Grizzly Hills, making friends)

The Hills Have Us (Ride a gryphon from Dragonblight to Amberpine Lodge in Grizzly Hills)
Local Support (Collect Cedar Chest (in a house guarded by 3 hordes))
Close the Deal (Simply go to Ivan)

I refuse to believe an artifact so awesomely powerful as the Scythe of Elune:

Fits into a crappy little wooden chest
Is so unimportant to Arugal and co that it's left for us to find for them
Would be almost glossed over by Blizzard in this way.

Now, I've never actually completed the quest line (never bothered with the Arugal-killing part) so if it's confirmed that we just picked up a box containing the Scythe as if it were nothing then so be it - otherwise, no, I will be amazed if this is the scythe.

Based on the numerous casks of 'beverages' within the 'trappers' lodge, my guess is the chest contained nothing more than 'Screech', a slang term for a very potent self-brew alcohol.

If that's the Scythe of Elune, after the battle with the Lich King, he was retrieved and kept in Gilneas - not much likely, although the whole quest chain really makes it somehow obvious after a quick analysis.

So, considering all that what has been done, the presumable course of the Scythe until now would be (based on the chronological patch order):

WoW Classic (Vanilla):
- Unknown origin (Elune?)
- Ashenvale: Velinde Starsong receives the Scythe from Elune to battle with the Burning Legion, first known use and register of the Scythe.
- Duskwood, Roland's Doom: Jitters finds the Scythe and use it by accident in a mine nearby Grand Hamlet (now Darkshire), summoning the worgen into the mine. Morbent Fel and the Dark Riders of Deadwind Pass began searching for the Scythe.

WoW: Wrath of the Lich King:
- Evergreen Trading Post, Grizzly Hills: The Scythe is contained inside of a Cedar Chest, protected by Horde soldiers.
--- Player returns to Alliance base in Amberpine Lodge and offers the Cedar Chest as a part of a bargain to request help of the Aspen Grove trappers. Ivan becomes the new Scythe bearer. After discovering that almost all the trappers are worgen, the player rescues an captured Alliance soldier and escapes Silverbrook. Quest chain goes through a neutral chain involving the secret involving Arugal's return and future demise (by the player's hands).

WoW: Cataclysm:
- Scythe returns to Gilneas, where is hidden somewhere and later found by Sylvanas' forces and moved on to Wood's End Cabin. Worgen player attacks the cabin with Tobias Mistmantle and his worgen forces, rescuing the Scythe and returning it to Lord Darius Crowley, which is the last bearer of the Scythe until patch 4.2.2a.

Storyline and possible future retcons:
This storyline really twists everything up, if it is exactly as it goes. I'd risk a hunch and say that Gilneas' events are before Grizzly Hills, but there's no evidence to that until now (maybe except the fact that a worgen player going to Grizzly Hills would be completely out-of-lore (considering that the Scythe would never have reached Gilneas). This would make the storyline as follows: Unknown Origin -> Ashenvale -> Duskwood -> Gilneas -> Grizzly Hills. How the Scythe was lost by the gilneans is a big question, since they seemed to have it tightly secured. Also, since Sylvanas herself was so interested in the Scythe, this couldn't be possible, or else the forces in Grizzly Hills would be far stronger - to completely secure the Scythe for the Horde. Another fact to consider is that in WotLK, Garrosh Hellscream is NOT the Warchief, and in the worgen introduction quest chain is a fact quite visible, mainly in the cutscene of the quest The Hunt for Sylvanas, where Garrosh's name is widely mentioned.

This creates a huge flaw in the story, since the worgen shouldn't be able to intervene with Silverbrook - or else they'd change the whole storyline and mess with the story of Gilneas.
