After trying out a few places, I've made myself at home in Grim Batol (non-heroic) to farm these. Nothing but humanoids and dragonkin (and 1 or 2 elementals that you can't pickpocket in each pack) in a big linear dungeon.
For maximum efficiency, spec a pickpocketing build (subtlety) and use the glyph of pickpocketing and glyph of pick lock. Use saps to maneuver around tight packs and distract to stop the trogg packs. Take off all your gear and kill yourself when you reach the end boss, reset the instance as you fly up to it and repeat.
I clear about 60-70 boxes per hour doing this. Picked about 400+ boxes so far and haven't gotten anything other than healing pots, poisons, vendor trash and trade materials.

<This post previously spoke about farming Grim Batol. I have since found a place a hundred times better.>
If you have never done the Vash'ir quest-line, or barely touched it, like I had until tonight, this post is for you. Start the quest-line from the beginning in
Kelp'thar Forest
. Eventually it will lead to the
Shimmering Expanse
of Vash'ir. Once here, continue questing UNTIL you get the quest called
Swift Action (Alliance)
/
Swift Action (Horde)
. DO NOT COMPLETE THIS QUEST.
Instead, leave the room where you received it and proceed to the second story of the Ruins of Vash'ir. You will see literally
hundreds
of Naga, just lined up and waiting for you. Simply enter Stealth and stroll between their ranks Pick Pocketing them. I average at least 100+ junkboxes in 20-30 minutes, it's insanely fast. I've farmed Grim Batol, and I've farmed the troggs in Deepholm. They have
nothing
on this.
Some quick tips:
1. There is no need to spec Subtlety for the faster stealth-walking. With the
Sea Legs
buff in this zone, and the recent changes to Stealth itself to no longer penalize movement speed, regular Stealth is more than fast enough. I've actually missed mobs because it's so fast already.
2. Use both
Glyph of Pick Pocket
and
Glyph of Pick Lock
.
3. Use Sap as well for navigating around tight packs of enemies. Keep in mind you can literally walk
through
a Sapped enemy and be fine.
4. For those of you old school Rogues, you may remember Pick Pocket being a very slow skill and not always looting everything, etc etc. In all my runs, I have yet to run into that problem. Pick Pocket can be cast WHILE MOVING, so to speed up your path, you can pick enemies as you walk by them, especially if you have the glyph.
5. If you get tired of navigating the ranks of Naga standing around, you can make you way to the center of the area they are at. There are a ton of Azsh'ir Wave Screamers maintaining a large blue summoning portal. If you position yourself just under or above this portal in Stealth, and have a quick Pick Pocket method (such as the skill bound to your mouse), you can Pick Pocket the Naga that get summoned before they swim away. You never have to move, and get close to the same amount of boxes. Personnally, I think it's less, because you're waiting on 3-5 second summons for 2-5 mobs at a time, but it is still very quick, and you don't have to move at all.
6. The best macro I have found for Pick Pocket farming is the following. Binding it to a button on your mouse or nearby your fingers on the keyboard (I use my mouse because I have extra buttons on it) will make clicking it blazing fast as you weave in and out of the Naga ranks. The way this macro works is simple: It will Pick Pocket any mob that you have your mouse cursor just hovering over. You don't have to even target the mob, it'll just Pick Pocket the mouse-over'd enemy. However, if you DO have a target, like you you specifically targeted, it will Pick Pocket that. =)
#showtooltip Pick Pocket
/cast Pick Pocket; Pick Pocket
That being said, at 200-250+ boxes an hour, you're bound to hit one of those epics soon. ... And if not, you get a crazy amount of
Rogue's Draught
,
Grilled Shark
, a lifetime supply of poisons, and a ton of extra gold.
Hope this helps, and happy farming. Hope I get mine soon. >_<

Grim Batol is a nice spot to farm for boxes yes. However, there is an even better spot for hordies.
Highbank in Twilight Highlands. You'll get sent there after doing various chains involving the goblin area. All of the gunners and cannoneers along the walls are pick pocketable, there are TONS of them, and they do not agro. I do a circuit around the island in minutes, with no fear of being attacked, with tons of boxes in my bags.
I have not completed the quests there for fear of phasing out the npcs (a confirm on that would rock). Happy rogueing!

The twilight blade dropped for me yday after circa 1200 boxes - the lucky one was from a trogg, not that that matters. Happy farming!
Edit: I'm still farming (for the spinerender this time). 1500 boxes down and nothing yet. If I have to read another Goblin Gentleman magazine... Luckily the red ale is helping with the pain (and the fast approaching insanity).

Found another good spot to farm boxes, it's at the Ruins of Vashj'ir. I don't know if it's due to phased content because of the
quest
I'm on, but there's literally hundreds of naga ripe for the picking. They're spaced out nicely (not that it matters, they're lvl 81 and you can pretty much move through em without noticing you at 85), making for easy pickpocketing.
Edit: after turning in
this quest
, these despawned. So if you're on these quests and are planning to farm lockboxes, I suggest not turning them in.

I am farming in the shattered front in Deepholm. Found that I can loop a path through the mobs two times taking around 40 minutes and obtain 45-50 boxes. I have been farming for epix for around two weeks now.

To anyone who is thinking about farming for an epic:
My advice is...
DON'T
do it.
After a solid week of farming these things I finally got a Twilight Blade. I lost count of how many boxes I opened, but it was anywhere between 2500-3000. If I knew it was going to take that long, I would have never bothered. I could have honestly gotten better gear by just running heroics/raiding. However, I always finish what I start, so I couldn't give up. The grind was downright grueling. I am so relieved its over and I have such a nice dagger.
If you insist on farming these things, use a macro found in the above comments, spec into sub so you can run faster, and make sure to have the lock pick and pick pocket glyphs. Without these things, the grind will
easily
take twice as long. The spot I ended up using was the troggs in Deepholm (fractured front AND Stonehearth), however I did not try Vash.
Good luck to anyone who doesn't heed my warning!

Anyways
here's

So I would first off like to say, screw all of you who are luckier than me. I have farmed around 20,000 lockboxes and haven't seen a single epic. I did the first 10k at the Deepholm site and then I discovered the site in Vashj'ir which is superior in every way. At my new site I can manage to get around 90 boxes is roughly 22 minutes.
I cant understand why you would pick Grim Batol to run....unless I am unaware of something. I am still hunting, and I hope if you choose to as well that you know what you might be in for.

I'm leveling my rogue and am currently 82. I don't really plan to stop and farm boxes like some folks but I am curious if I should maybe take the time and snag what I can while leveling.
Is it possible to get the epics BEFORE hitting 85?
I only ask because of the way archaeology works with their 359 epics will only show up if you have 450+ archaeology and am wondering if these epics work in a similar manner.

This macro seems great if you lower the distance
#showtooltip Pick Pocket
/console targetNearestDistance 5
/targetenemy
/cast Pick Pocket

i set the distance to 3 and i just run around the outside of a circle. I dont get spiked as often either and you can see the target circles pop up under the troggs quickly and it wont retarget someone you already got so you can kinda keep visual track of if they all got circles flashed under them fairly well.
I just do this 10-20 mins a day.

Random is random, got my Krol after about 100 boxes. Well deserved I must say, after weeks of farming for the Vial of the sands -recipe with no luck.
I was wondering, might be a stupid thought, but is there any chance your current spec can affect the box-loot? Three different items and most daggers looted so far ..which also is the most popular spec atm. Im combat (also while PP), and I saw another one up here that got a Krol whos also combat.
Anyhow, got it in Deepholm, and I found the mouseover method superior, in combination with toggling on "Name plates" (press V)

Can anyone confirm if they have looted a purple from this area? At this point after this many boxes, I'm thinking maybe it's only the higher level MOBs that you get Junkboxes from?

I can confirm that the epic items drop from any Flame-Scarred Junkbox no matter what mob you pick pocket it from. The first Twilight Blade I got was about 30 boxes in to grinding the Trogg in Deep Holme. That was pure luck, I read this forum before hand and new it could take a long time. Getting that dagger got me excited so I continued to grind hoping for a second drop. I spent the remaining week grinding that area for a couple hours a day, I know I opened upwards of 2,000 boxes and didn't get anything beyond a random blue gem and some junk greens.
I decided to take it a step further, I created several macros and a keyboard auto macro (I'm aware that this is pretty much botting at this point but I wanted to test to see if it was even worth grinding). One macro would pickpocket nearest target, another would open any junkbox found, and another would delete the junk greys and whites I pickpocketed off the mob so I wouldn't fill up my bags with junk.
I then went to where the naga run from the cave in Vashj'ir since they auto spawn unlimited numbers and can be pick pocketed. I sat by the entrance and had my character auto pickpocket and open. I did this during 3 nights, on an average of 60 boxes an hour I ran for a total of about 30 hours opening a total of around 1800 lockboxes including the original 2000 I manually grinded. That's around 4k lockboxes, that I opened. I got a total of 3 gems, a bunch of whites and greens and a second Twilight Blade. This would put the percent drop rate for an epic item at well less than 0.1% to closer to 0.025% or less. Basically it's not worth self grinding, and if you plan on botting you run the risk of Blizzard blocking your account. So in my opinion don't waste your time, there's plenty of more efficient methods for getting epics. You should continue to pick pocket regurally though, for instance I attached pick-pocket to my sap in a macro so when I have to do dailies or standard cc in dungeons I also pickpocket the target. Who knows maybe you will be one of the lucky few that get an epic in a small number of boxes, but by no means is it worth grinding for.

I have been pick-pocketing the Troggs in Deepholm for
碎脊者
. I have done this off and on for a couple of weeks and looted approximately 6-7,000 lockboxes. I tend to concentrate at the top end of the area where the Golems fight as the troggs further south give a demoralizing shout which makes you de-stealth which is annoying. You can pick-pocket about 75-80 boxes an hour here. Just chose a loop that takes 15 minutes which allows the pockets to reset.
I have read a lot of comments about the drop rate and I think the drop rate is higher than some of these posts suggest. So far I have looted 2x
科罗尔斩首者
, 2x
暮光之刃
and a
碎脊者
. Yes I could have been lucky, but the fact that I looted 5 items gives a better average than other estimates. Just under 0.1%.
I agree that there are better ways to spend time in game to obtain kit like dungeons and raids, but if you are watching TV while pick-pocketing then it passes the time and you might be lucky !

Finally got the sword, Krol Decapitator after much time and grief. For the easily bored or non-farming types this grind might not be your thing. I kept track of my boxes and good finds, and I think the drop rate for an epic, that is , either the dagger sword or thrown is about 1 in 2500/3000
Pickpocketed fleeing Naga in Vashir for two weeks, they had no aggro table and it was a mindless thud to just stealth/swim at the spawn point and spam the PP macro.
2676 boxes in Spinerender dropped. Also 14 rare gems, 47 greens of dubious quality and enough Inscription mats (Bleached Jawbone, Silver Charm Bracelet, etc.) to keep my bank toon occupied for a long time. They do not sell for big bucks anymore BTW. I am bleeding them onto the market and trying to get 20 gold or so per. I thought I was done pickpocketing at this point. I ran a few heroics and got skunked on one decent drop and decided to renew my thievery...last patch removed the pockets from the mindless Naga....damn.
No more Naga pockets...hmmm...switched to The Fractured Front in Deepholme. Pickpocketing Troggs is also mindless but at least once in a great while you get stealth broken by an earth spike or your coma makes you drive your toon into one of the bugged Troggs at the South end or a Basilisk rider. No big...they die easy.
2254 boxes in Krol Decpitator dropped. Again an assortment of rare gems and junk greens and Inscription mats. FWIW I also averaged about 75-100G an hour from the coinage and sell off of grey vendor trash.
All in all from talking to other toons and what I have seen stat .wise I think the drop rate is 1/2500 or so. I am sure some lucky folks can go grab 10 boxes and find an epic. I hate them BTW. It's just like the lottery. Crap odds but enough people "win" to keep you interested. I for one will never pickpocket farm again. Cheers and good luck.

I have done 2000 Pickpocket's. I had gotten 216 box's from it. I find the lock box's have a 9.25 % to drop from a mob. Im personally going to keep going. I think this process is going to be a long one. But all the good things tend to take time. Plus it will give me something to do.

I haven't done anything else with this toon and I'm a little over 3000g from pick pocketing/selling whatever I loot. I've gotten 24 gems about about 17 greens. This is pretty painful and I'll probably be able to buy one of the epics from the money I pick before I actually get one to drop. Good times.

I've had to confirm with various sources that these rare 359 weapons DO indeed drop from these boxes. To all the people who picked up something after 12, or 120, or even 1200 boxes, f*** you. xD Good for you, but f*** you. Farm for gold to buy your epics, or earn them the old fashioned way. From my recent experience thus far, this has been a huge goddamn waste of time. Happy farming.
*EDIT*
I said screw it, and farmed a hundred more boxes. No more, no less, then I quit. Second to last box, I get the Decapitator. Took about a week, and cost much time and sanity. Happy Farming.

The Highbank location in Twilight Highlands has been nerfed slightly with patch 4.1. While the NPCs on the walls and towers still don't agro, the Cannoneers on the towers now DO agro when you are within range. I have yet to check the Fractured Front in Deepholm, but I suspect that there is less to nerf there since we always had to be stealthed when farming there.

With 4.1 and the new trolled dungeons I have been Player my rogue again. After each run through the ZG and ZA I dont exit the dungeon right away and I spent a few minutes walking through the dungeons pick pocketing all of the Yellow non-hostile trolls. They have juicy pockets ( a number of lock boxes per run ) and little to no risk of getting in trouble. The only issue is if you get a little to close to a hostile troll that hasnt been cleared.

I find the Amani'shi Peons inside ZA to be a nice change of pace from the troggs. They are neutral so no need to worry about getting agro. I get about 10 boxes from clearing both sides of the middle bridge-thingy at a fast pace. They seem to reset their pockets fast as well.
Only downside is getting in easily, once you hit the gong mobs will enter, for some reason they will keep putting me in combat (even when i exit and enter the dungeon) untill they kill me once...after that I can just stealth by.

Out of the idea of easy gathering and not willing to carry lots of grey junk around I made an addon.
It's called RogueThievery and can be found on curseforge.
What it does:
When using Pick Pocket it'll acquire the target's money, any item above common (= white) quality ( -> greens, blues, epics) and also specified items which are currently only
潜行者的生啤
,
焦痕斑斑的废料箱
.
All the grey junk as well as some white but mostly useless items will be ignored.

Fellow Rogues, if you're like me and don't need the few silver you'll get from vendoring absolute trash greys, even in bulk, you can use a great addon I found that will automatically destroy it all as you specify. It's called Auto Destroy, and is available on Curse. You have to enable it every time you logon (safety feature), and specify it to work in the zone you're in each time... But anything you put on the "Always Destroy" list will stay for future use.
So basically, if you intend on going on a pick-pocketing spree, type /ad, click the Enable button, and have a ball. Your bags won't fill with those useless greys. You'll have more room for junkboxes, and you'll reduce the amount of time you have to go see vendors. =)

Welcome to Vaedrin's Cata Lockbox farming guide.
Before we begin, I'd like to state how long I've been playing the Rogue Class.
1. I have the Feat of Strength Master Seargent
2. I used to stay in AV to pickpocket trogs to sell Blinding Powder.
3. I still have a set of Theive's Tools and stacks of gray Blinding Powder.
Now on to todays lesson. You need not read further if you have completed the Quest Swift Action in Vashir.
Things we will need include:
Glyph of Pick Pocket (Must have)
Glyph of Pick Lock (helpful but not needed)
Bag Space (frostweave or better)
Guild Page companion pet (quick vendor)
The quest Swift Action is a wonderful quest for Pickers like myself. The quest brings up armies
of Naga into Military Formation that are for the most part easy to pick from. For an Idea of
level range I started picking this area at level 83 but I feel confident that you can pick it
much earlier provided you are careful.
I use a Macro to speed up the process:
#show Pick Pocket
/console targetNearestDistance 8
/targetenemy
/cast Pick Pocket
/cleartarget
The result is a macro that you can use while moving that lets you pick RANDOM pockets that are in the range
of 8. Now if you are sharp you will note that the Glyph of Pick Pocket makes the range 10. Why would I do
that? Because in theory it will pick pockets that are ahead and behind you but in pratice I find that I often
pick pockets that I have already passed. The time between new target aqusition and my moving often
means that I am out of range of the target by the time I'm ready to use pick pocket. You can experiment
with this but I feel that this works best for me.
Now that the macro is out of the way lets go a bit further shall we? The quest will try to make you mount a
Sea horse to bomb the naga away. Don't talk to the gnome. Instead leave the quest start area and make your
way to the second story of the structure.
I use two methods to pick these guys. Each has pro's and cons. Multi-pass is ground based pick pocketing where
you are doing the old fashioned way. The reason why its called Multi-pass if because if you do it the old-school
way you are going to miss stuff. Sometimes the items we are after (junkboxes for me). So you have to turn around
through the naga ranks and keep goin. Another approach is to swim over their heads and collect that way. It's
more consistent but you run a greater risk of getting your stealth broken. Use what you prefer, I prefer both, if
the naga are in wide formation the stay on ground, if its a tighter group swim overhead but dont miss a box.
1 pass of the entire second story area netted me the following:
37 of those SWEET junkboxes
35 cool breeze (junk)
39 Grilled shark (decent food)
35 Blackheart Grog (rogue only alcholic drink)
19 Scale Spounge (more junk)
4 Snuggy Starfish (even more junk)
9 Rogue's Draught (Great rogue only Health pot)
50g, 68s, 32c
On opening the boxes:
9 wound p
4 deadly p
4 instant p
4 mind p
another rogue draught
1 Silver charm Bracelet (inscription thing)
and my gold changed to:
54g, 82s, 27c

I've been farming these junkboxes for the past two weeks and for the most part I've been attempting to get them from the troggs just south of Needlerock Slag in Deepholm, but just last night I tried the Naga place that Vaedrin mentioned above as I was lucky enough to have not completed the quest chains here. Here are my findings of each.
Deepholm - Fractured Front
I found learning a route to be quite tricky here as the pockets of troggs are in no sort of shape (like a circle or square), so you end up going back on yourself a lot and occasionally coming across a group you've already picked. Another annoyance of these trogg packs is the Geomancers. They will on occasion cast a sort of Earth Spike move knocking you out of stealth. You can easily get back into stealth with no trouble as it doesnt put you in combat. However when you're half asleep mindlessly farming, it can be quite easy to miss that you're not actually picking things because you're out of stealth. Each lap of this place nets you anywhere between 25-45 boxes depending on how much the RNG is liking you. I found that after completing a lap, only around 70% of the troggs have had their pockets reset, so once you have done your first lap, the number of boxes can be slightly diminished. The one redeeming factor of this area is that each lap can end/start one an Earthen guy that you can vendor all your junk to after opening your boxes, meaning endless farming of these.
Vashj'ir - Quel'Dormir Terrace
Immediately I found this place to be a nice change of scenery from the troggs and on the whole a much more satisfying place to farm these. The music is calming, the scenery is pretty. However if you dont care for such things, this is still an amazing place to farm the boxes. The Naga mobs are nicely regimented, meaning you can simply walk by and keep spamming your macro. The mobs are much more plentiful than in Deepholm. They are lower level than the troggs too, meaning you can basically walk on them and not be spotted. Sea Legs buff makes your stealth faster too, which is handy since youll be lapping the entire Ruins of Quel'Domir. The drop rate of the boxes appears to be the same as from the troggs, but you can get far more per hour here due to them being so tightly packed. The only downside is no vendor to sell trash to. I would suggest using one of the macros mentioned above to get rid of useless greys youll be getting.
I still havent gotten any of the epics (which I'm getting simply for face value since better ones are much easier to obtain now). Once I get something I'll post on here the who/what/when's.
Hope this helps someone.

Swift action quest does help but I hadnt touched vashir and it was 205 kills and 99 quests to get to it and having done 10 or so runs I gave up, if thats a good place to farm boxes I don't want to know about it was getting between 1 in 10 or 20 pick pockets

It's worth noting that all the white drops except
潜行者的生啤
are used only by scribes and only to make relics.

Best spot hands down is on the quest
Swift Action
.
Instead of looting the armies there is a spot on the terrace where the Alliance Assault Volunteers are fighting the Azsh'ir Soldiers. (38.4, 78) The Azsh'ir keep respawning and respawning and respawning. I have been here for an hour and have not had any aggro whatsoever. Great spot to get those epics!

The humans/Horde around the highbank are definitely not the same ones that existed when most of these posts were made. They will hit you if you are close enough and they are fighting and do an AoE,
They will aggro if they see you in stealth because you get too close
They also flag you for pvp if you get some of them standing around vehicles etc.
In fact, almost all of them are pvp flagged now and as soon as you pickpocket them you will be too.
Keep your eyes open as you are checking to see if their pockets are as well.
You could be in for a surprise!

One of the best places to farm these is in Twilight Highlands for Horde. Just don't turn in the quest
Off the Wall
and you're able to farm the
Highbank Marksmen
. They don't attack anything but the zep, so you're free to stand on top of them to get your macros to work. Here's the one I use:
#showtooltip Pick Pocket
/target Highbank
/cast Pick Pocket
All this one does is insure that you don't have to tab-target, and that your pocket is a one button deal. It will also target the closest mob with that name. To spam open the boxes, use:
#showtooltip Flame-Scarred Junkbox
/cast Pick Lock
/use Flame-Scarred Junkbox
/use Flame-Scarred Junkbox
Two button presses and they open. Just keep spamming till they're all open.
The great thing about this area compared to
Vashj'ir
, besides the non-attacking mobs, is if you run out of mobs to pocket, jump back on the zep and shoot them all. They'll respawn and you're back to pocketing.

I've been farming the Junkboxes in
瓦丝琪尔
(

quest mobs) in hopes of looting
暮光之刃
some day.
The said quest area is by far the best place to farm the boxes and/or the dagger. It takes me ~12 minutes to go around the area. I don't pick pocket every mob though. Instead, I've honed a route that maximizes the pick pockets cast per second. In the said ~12 minutes, I get anything from 25 to 40 junkboxes, 32 being the median.
I've calculated that with constant farming (no breaks etc. included) it would take 42,7 hours
at average
to get one dagger.
I've opened about a few thousand boxes. No signs of any epics though (yet).
I'm using two macros to keep the pick pocket farming efficient and as effortless as possible.
