The new enchanting dust of Cataclysm. It's predecessor being
Infinite Dust
.

Interesting enough, it seemed like they reversed the % between dust and essence for weapons and armors.
I intentionally picked armor rewards over weapons in Hyjal and at the end of the spree, I have 35 hypnotic dusts and 61 lesser celestial essences.
Additional confirmations would be really helpful.
P.S. For some reason hypnotic dust refuses to show up on wowhead searches. Had to click in through the reagent section from enchanting or other chanting mats.
Edit: As of Dec 13 hotfix, Disenchanted green items are now giving more materials as the item levels increase. This change also ensures armor items give dust more often than essence, and that weapons give more essence than dust.

Sounds like the "too much essence and not enough dust" issue just got fixed. I, too, was thinking there was a problem and had similar results to Revenga.

Has anyone found a good way to farm these? Via tailoring, JC, BS, etc...
It just appears that we are gonna have to find some cheap way to farm the dusts or enchants are gonna be ridiculously expensive.
As for me, the cheapest thing I can find to craft and then melt for dust are the BS armor items that only require 3 Folded Obsidium to craft. If you can farm the Obsidium, then your dusts are gonna be basically free. Also, the obsidium is a little easier to get now that they have fixed Deepholm to spawn equal amounts or Obsidium and Elementium instead of just Elementium. Also, if you get a lot of Elementium, there are a few BS items that require only a few Elementium Bars. Most of the Elementium stuff is Blue quality and will Melt into shards, but there are a few green recipes that will drop dust.
Hope that this bit of info helps. I am interested in hearing if anyone else has found a more efficient way to farm the dust. Seems that the rarity of Embersilk Cloth is making Tailoring a bad choice for farming the dust atm.

This should have been fixed right? Because it's been a couple of days that I've been questing and DEing the items I get to try and get some Hypnotic Dust and I've gotten a ton of celestial essences and very few dusts. This is very frustrating as you need buckets of this dust to level enchanting past 450. As of today this problem still seems to exist.

I had a great plan for obtaining Hypnotic Dust while leveling enchanting and that was Justice Points, I have the max on 2 characters so I got to the point where I needed Hypnotic Dust, go to buy stacks of the stuff only to find out that it isn't 200 justice for a stack but rather 200 justice for 1 Hypnotic Dust, I died inside...
In the end I spent around 5,000g on ~520 Hypnotic Dust from the Auction House, I do hope I needed that many then again I can just sell them if I have any left over
I should've kept Leatherworking...

Deathsilk Cowl
seems to be the winner in terms of Tailoring - only requires three bolts of Embersilk Cloth (15 raw cloth) which is the least of any of the Tailoring items of the same ilvl, and no Volatiles. Made 40 and DE'd them, yielding 75 Hypnotic Dust and 23 Lesser Celestial Essence.

I decided to run a small test to see if disenchanting a cheap-to-make crafted item for
Hypnotic Dust
is less expensive than buying the dust directly from the AH. I chose to create and disenchant 10
Deathsilk Bracers
. Here are my results:
cost
Eternium Thread
: 20 @ 2.4g/ea = 48g
cost
Bolt of Embersilk Cloth
: 20 @ 21g/ea = 420 (cheapest AH price to get 20 at the time)
total cost to create 10
Deathsilk Bracers
: 468g or ~47g/ea
Disenchanting yielded an average of 2
Hypnotic Dust
/
Deathsilk Bracers
(or 20
Hypnotic Dust
). At my auction house,
Hypnotic Dust
was selling for 2g/ea (bid) or 3g/ea (buy out) = 40g-60g total
The only additional piece of information worth noting is that there is a relatively small chance that
Lesser Celestial Essence
could drop from the disenchant, which seemed to be worth about 20+g/ea at AH.
My conclusion is that it is much less expensive at this moment of time on my server to buy
Hypnotic Dust
than to get it from crafting and disenchanting
Deathsilk Bracers
. In this case, I spent about 10x more (23.5g vs 2.5g) for each
Hypnotic Dust
obtained than I needed to.
* Remember that just because you can farm materials like
Embersilk Cloth
, doesn't mean it is "free". It has an opportunity cost of what you could sell it for that you will not realize by crafting it.

the best and cheapest method i found for myself is DEing
碧玉指环
, usualy gets me around 2-3 dust(with guild perk)
the material is pretty cheap to get compared to other mats( realm dependant ofc).
i bought like 6 stacks of jasper for 50g-80g(per stack of 20) and got enough dust out of it to keep me going for a while

Stacks of this on my server are getting as low as 15g per. That's insane. Why? It takes
x420
催眠之尘
to level enchanting efficiently. When Mists launches (hopefully they announce the date
any day now
), enchanting is always a leveling favorite for new toons, and there are going to be
a lot of leveling pandas
. Players are selling off their hypnotic stacks now because they have so many and are worth very little. After Mists launches, that will completely change as people will need roughly 20-22 stacks to level. Once Cata zones become vacant because people are just passing through to get to Pandaria, these dusts will skyrocket in price.
Supply will NOT keep up with demand. Even with players running Cata dungeons for faster leveling, or crafting items to level other profs, etc., 20-22 stacks per leveling enchanter is going to blow supply to pieces.

Warhowl was right about the jasper ring. I had been DEing deathsilk bracers as I am a tailor but the cloth is very expensive and takes ages to farm. I bought up 70 jasper at 88G a stack, along with the settings it cost around 400G to make 70 rings (so cheap!). From the 70 rings I got:
115 Hypnotic Dust.
36 Lesser Celestial Essence
10 Small Heavenly Shards
I needed these to level up my enchanting but is actually a good money spinner too. What I made had about triple the value of what I spent. So if you're an enchanter, find a nice jewelcrafter and if you're a jewelcrafter find a nice enchanter! Think they are only selling so well at the mo because of Pandaria being just out.

The best way i've found to farm Hypnotic Dust is to mine stacks of elementium/obsidium in deepholm, then get a jewelcrafter to prospect and make rings/necks out of whatever gems the prospecting yields. Nearly everything from the prospected ore will be useful. Disenchant all the rings, necks, and carn spikes. should have plenty of dust.

Yeah, I would definitely recommend farming the mobs on "Verlok Stand" in Deepholm. They give a lot of embersilk cloth to get a tailor to make greens and greens to disenchant. I also used the
寻宝药水
and it gave me extra embersilk cloth, gold, some ores and other items. Very good place for hypnotic dust.

I was wondering whether it would be better to disenchant
Deathsilk Bracers
or
Deathsilk Cowl
because the bracers cost one less bolt to make.
I found that 12
Deathsilk Cowl
gave me 36
Hypnotic Dust
where as 12
Deathsilk Bracers
only gave me 19
Hypnotic Dust
.

If you're looking to farm this dust post-Cataclysm and are tired of competing against open world farmers like I was, I would highly suggest attempting to solo Grim Batol. (On normal mode - can't speak for heroic as I haven't tried it.)
On one run, I got about a dozen greens to disenchant, and about 4 stacks of Embersilk Cloth. I've tried a couple of other Cataclysm instances on normal mode (Stonecore and Lost City), but neither of them were nearly as efficient as Grim Batol.
As a level 90 balance druid with 505 ilvl, it was quite easy to AoE down mobs, especially if you do the bombing run from one of the drakes on the trash first. (I'd suggest only hitting each pack once, though, as two hits will kill some of the mobs.) I'm not sure how it would be with lower quality gear or for classes without decent self heals, but I'm sure it's not that much harder as long as you're not making ultra huge pulls. (I was able to comfortably pull 2-3 packs at a time.) You may have to fight a boss or two if you're not a rogue or a druid, but even those were quite easy for me to solo.

Do not bother with the Verlok Stand farming. I just went and killed the mobs mentioned for 20 minutes and ended up with a whole 12 Embersilk Cloth and zero greens for DE'ing. Apparently this farming area has been nerfed to the ground.

The Chamber of the Moon (entrance at 42, 25 in Uldum) is a great place to farm for Hypnotic Dust. Most of the greens there will disenchant into 1-5 Hypnotic Dust, Lesser Celestial Essence or Greater Celestial Essence. Not to mention the mobs there will drop
烬丝布
, which you can then be tailored into Death Silk recipes and also disenchant into Hypnotic Dust.

If you're leveling enchanting, you can leveling on "Enchant Ring - XXX" from 475-500+ (but 500 is enough for MoP).
s are much cheaper than Hypnotic Dusts. You can also ask your friends to Shatter Maelstrom Crystals (easy to get by soloing raids/instances).

If you look at the first tab :"Sold by" , you will find the NPC's that can covert 100 Justice points to 1 dust...so if you just valor cap using heroic dungeons, you can rack up 4000 JP in no time and buy 40 just like that. I wish I would have known this back when I was leveling enchanting and I DE'd a ton of items.

Dont waste your time trying farming this in instances, because at least as of Cataclysm, the super easy way of getting greens is by simply questing. Hopefully you have some quests left to do.

With
烬丝布
costing 3g (or
烬丝布卷
15g), total cost was 4500g. Celestials sold for maybe 1000g, so it I've paid 11-12g per Dust(thank God it was still way below AH price).

You can get these by disenchanting items with item level
272-305.
35-37 as in 9.0 prepatch.
Here
, you can browse the items so you can figure where to obtain them.
Disenchanting them, will reward in 1-3
催眠之尘
and 1-3
次级天界精华
.
There is a relatively easy way to farm them, if you are a tailor.
You can make
逝亡之丝罩帽
which only requires 3x
烬丝布卷
(15x
烬丝布
) and disenchant them.

My favorite way to farm for

is to try for something else. Two birds with one stone, and it keeps me busy. I'm currently alternating between farming for
北风幼龙缰绳
from

and trying for
琉璃石幼龙缰绳
from

烬丝布
, both of which still sell very well, at least on my server.

For those of you who are skilled in both Enchanting and Jewelcrafting, the cheapest and most efficient way to obtain
催眠之尘
is by using:
阿里锡黄晶
to create
阿里锡黄晶坠饰
; or
红玉髓
to create
红玉指套
; or
桂榴石
to create
桂榴石指环
; or
碧玉
to create
碧玉指环
; or
夜之石
to create
夜之石颈环
.
With
you will create roughly 3-7
催眠之尘
from each disenchant (you will also net quite a few
次级天界精华
and
强效天界精华
which you can then resell to recoup quite a bit of gold). To obtain the materials you can either purchase them from the auction house or use
选矿
on
源质矿石
,
黑曜石矿
, or
燃铁矿石
.

A clever and fast way to find items for disenchant and make hypnotic dust and also farm embersilk cloth for your tailoring is doing Grim Batol when you are level 90. I did it with my elemental shaman twice in half and hour and took 128 Embersilk cloth and many items to disenchant. What you got to do is take one dragon at the start and half kill as many as the mobs as you can. Then it will be easier to kill them. Good luck :)

It does seem the drop rate between Hypnotic Dust and Celestial Essence has changed making it somewhat more difficult to acquire the dust. Also with the drop rate of Embersilk being removed from the Troggs in Fractured Front in Deepholm, (Needlerock Slag) Embersilk has become harder to acquire, however here is an alternative; you can try the following.
First you will have to had to completed the full starting quest chain from Twilight Highlands and the full Iso'roth quest chain, as well.
Do the starter quests in Vermillion Redoubt until you come upon one of the two these quests:
(Alliance)
马迪亚斯的命令
(Horde)
拼凑起来的指挥
It is very important to note here that you “DON NOT COMPLETE THE FINAL QUESTS AND TURN THEM IN”, if you do; the NPC’s will disappear and all will have been for naught. Once you get to the tentacles depending on your DPS the remaining quests can be completed in less than half an hour, and it’s a fun quest line if; you don’t mind being eaten by the tentacles.
Some will say this has been nerfed but trust me it hasn’t, I farm that area for Embersilk all the time. For the best results, 600 pieces an hour or more you need to be on a tailor that has scavenger, and pop a potion of treasure finding to get the chests which yield a ton of Embersilk, volatiles, ore, and greens you can DC.

So I decided that the first character I made on a new server is a Mage with Enchanting/Tailoring, but what I didn't realise was how overpriced this dust is, and how little of it you get from Cataclysm quests. The AH had these babies at 20g per dust, and even those were selling!
I was still too low level for farming of the embersilk cloth (and I haven't started farming Frostweave due to needing 1200 of them), so my options were very thin. What I decided to do was quest through Pandaria till level 86, then go back to Cataclysm and do quests until I have enough dust (choosing Armor rewards more highly then Weapons, as I had alot of Essences already).
My advise? DONT DO THIS.
Levelling through Cataclysm, I got through the starting point of Twilight Highlands, 2/3 of Deepholm, Start of Uldum, halfway through Vashj and didn't touch Hyjal. To get enough dust to level enchanting, I had to finish Twilight Highlands, Deepholm and Uldum completly, this is including random world green drops as well. It was a huge time sink, and a green generally came once every three quests, with the final quest chains rewarding a blue instead.
So I advise you to level another character with Jewelcrafting to make the green rings and necklaces, or just level mining and ask someone to do it for you.
Good luck!

If you have a high level character I recommend farming Stonecore for greens and disenchanting them. Any level 90 can do this. With my paladin runs take about 7-8 minutes and the Stonecore instance can be reached really fast from the larger cities. Also there is a mailbox in the faction area where you come from the portal where you can send the loot to your enchanter.
In the instance I farm up until Ozruk because beyond this boss there are too little mobs. Also, I skip some of the Rock Flayers in the outer corridors. On the way back you can even take the teleport at Slabhide back to the entrance.
Here are the statistics from my last 3 runs:
- 18 green items that disenchanted into 25x
催眠之尘
and 17x
次级天界精华
- 75x
烬丝布
that can be used to tailor items that can be disenchanted :)
- 4 blue BoE items (that seem to drop often because there's loads of them on the AH)
- 18x
Volatile fire
- Loads of vendor trash and boss loot that can be sold.
I must add I got an unusual amount of essence this time. Usually there's more dust and less essences.

If you're levelling Enchanting in WoD or preparing for Legion, you've probably realised by now that
催眠之尘
is a pain in the butt to get cheaply and easily. Levelling from 425-500 is probably the most tedious part of all of Enchanting because of the absurd amount of Hypnotic Dust needed; which is between 300-350 Hypnotic Dust in total. The dust is absurdly expensive (on my server at least).
Most suggestions have been to go and farm
烬丝布
to make
逝亡之丝护腕
/
逝亡之丝罩帽
, or some JC stuff. But now you've probably realised that Embersilk is also super expensive too. To collect enough cloth to tailor enough gear to DE into the needed 300+ dust requires around 2000+ cloth. (I grinded 900 cloth (i.e. 180 bolts), crafted 90x bracers, DE'd and got 118 Hypnotic Dust; not even half way to the quantity needed. Not to mention the 500g+ cost to buy 180x
恒金线
). Depressing, very time consuming, and very expensive...
But fear not! There is a solution!
The majority of Hypnotic Dust needed is between the skill-up range from 440-470, and from 485-500. How about we cut those sections out entirely!
Whip out your Draenor enchants, which can be crafted from skill point 1. You can purchase the
德拉诺附魔
from your Ashran capital if you don't know the patterns already. Spend a few days crafting the
德拉诺附魔秘术
to buy either
黑石之印
or
影月之印
, they provide 15 skill-up points each craft until skill 700. They can be sufficiently cheap replacements to bypass this horrid part of levelling Enchanting. At the moment,
时光水晶
is relatively cheap (especially when comparing it to Hypnotic Dust); the
巫术之土
or
巫术之火
are ridiculously cheap (at least on my server) or can be bought with your abundance of unused
原始之灵
.
Simply craft 2x Mark of Blackrock/Shadowmoon to go from skill 440-470. Then follow the normal Cataclysm enchants until you reach skill 485, then craft 1 more Mark of Blackrock/Shadowmoon to boost yourself to skill 500.
Voila! Following this method of inserting a few of the WoD weapon enchants into the Cataclysm section
you'll only need approximately 65 Hypnotic Dust
to level from 425-500, which is a much more manageable amount down from the standard 300-350+ Hypnotic Dust. Alternatively, if you want to avoid the entirely of Cataclysm Enchanting; perhaps because it's cheaper to craft the cheap WoD weapon enchants or cause you want to avoid the pain of grinding out Hypnotic Dust, then simply craft 5x Mark of Blackrock/Shadowmoon from skill 425 to bypass this section entirely.
Once Legion comes out, then you will be able to sell your nice new weapon enchants to make a bit of gold so that people can pimp out their artifact weapons to make levelling easier. A win overall. Good luck!

If you are farming embersilk cloth, and also looking for weapons and armor to disenchant into hypnotic dust, try Bastion of Twilight, at the SW border of Twilight Highlands, at 34.2, 77.9
The entrance is at the top of a tall purple tower, so you will need flying. Guys inside are tough, also.
Just clear the first room you enter, and then leave and reset by right clicking on your portrait. Repeat as needed.

Here are my findings for the Legion expansion.
I decided to give
Bastion of Twilight
a go.
RNG definitely plays a huge part, but... when does it not?
On one of the disappointing runs I only got
1 green
but it still gave me 3
催眠之尘
I did have the
寻宝药水
on while running this.
I did this on my
Tailor/Enchanter
& after 10 resets of Bastion Of Twighlight on
25 man regular
I got
27
催眠之尘
and she was able to make
209
烬丝布卷
.
After this I decided to make
40
愈心束带
& disenchant them, which gave me
29
催眠之尘
.
So after all of this I got 56
催眠之尘
.
Not too bad, it was enough for what I needed.
Good luck, happy farming. <3

As of 2022, the best method to farm
催眠之尘
is becoming a tailorer and farming
烬丝布
from Bastion of Twilight (More Info here: ) Then making
逝亡之丝罩帽
and disenchanting them for a higher yield/embersilk bolt and chances to get
强效天界精华
instead of the inferior version. The
逝亡之丝护腕
are 1 less embersilk bolt to make but offers less yield and gives chances for lesser celestials which is not worth.
There really isn't any better alternatives that are as fast and efficient. Bastion of Twilight yields world drops as well as zone drops so you're likely to farm more greens in the instance while farming for cloth. The
寻宝药水
improves it slightly but isn't needed.
