I can confirm that it's not a guaranteed drop with the 3-minute achievement (although it would be nice, if you're reading, devs)

However the drop rate could still be higher while doing it under 3 minutes, but it's unlikely.

It's more than likely just coincidence that the mount drops after doing the achievement. It's because people are doing the achievement and accomplish it then see the mount that they mentally link it with the chance of the mount dropping. The reason there will be such a belief is people are trying to do the heroic achievements for the red proto drake and it'll drop enough after people accomplish it that there will be such a belief. Much like the drop rate idea of it being a "sure thing" after killing a certain amount of mobs.

I can confirm that killing Skadi in under 3 mins does not guarantee the drake drop.

Not really. The corruptor will always have one when you start the instance. The timer just determines whether you get to kill him and get the loot or not.

There is no Feat of Strength for getting this mount. I got it today and equiped it and no achievements was rewarded.

As far as I'm aware, the dropped proto-drakes (blue and green) both have a 1% chance per loot to drop. IMO, the easiest mounts to get are:

1) Red proto-drake: some of the achievements may seem tricky, but all are doable with a skilled, decently geared group and the right strategy. If you put in the time and effort, you should have no problems getting the drake.
2) Time-lost proto-drake: generally, the mob will spawn once every 2 to 3 days. Then it all comes down to how good you are at camping and tagging. If you can tag it and stay in dps range of it, you get your mount.
3) Blue proto-drake: whilst you have the competition of other group members if it drops, you have 7 times as many chances in a year to get this as you do the green proto-drake. You can also eliminate group competition with enough gold to grease the wheels.
4) Green proto-drake: as previously mentioned, you only get 52 chances in a year to earn it. The saving grace is that there's no competition if it does drop from your egg.
5) Plagued proto-drake: this is one of the more difficult drakes to get, as it involves a fairly difficult achievement - the Twilight Zone. As such, it would be very unlikely that anyone but a serious raider will get it.
6) Black proto-drake: along the same stream of thought as the plagued, this one involves getting the hardest T7 raid achievement - the Immortal. It would be even less likely to see anyone but a serious raider get it.

So with that in mind, if you're looking for a proto-drake but don't mind what colour it is - go for the red. All it takes is a bit of skill and dedication.

I belive it dose not metter how many runs you do, it is half confirmed by a gm, that every 90th to 110th run of the server in UP heroic it dropes, I belive its metter of luck to fall on the right one. So basicly, you can run 200 times and you will never get it becuase you wont be on the right server run, or run it once and you will be on the right server run :)

This pretty much has the same drop rate as of all rare-drop mounts in 3.0.3.

But I suppose this would be a tad harder to get compared to Deathcharger's Reins for example, since you only get 1 shot a day, and if you're a pugger, you might actually get a fail group that can't even get there.. Like me *cough*.

Seen the mount drop once in 12 kills. Hunter loaded in blues, that didn't even have 300 riding won it. Rather lame, but well.

Call it a twist of fate but this mount dropped on the first ever UP run I did on my warrior alt for the tank sword there, after I had given up on this mount on my main.

Now it might be just the animation, but the mount "feels" like it's faster than the other epic flyers - and seeing as I'm collecting mounts on my main I've tried many of them. I'm quite sure it's supposed to be 280% speed like the rest of them - something another guildie who has it keeps telling me - but still I wonder...

Another thing I found odd is that the icon is that of red proto drake. Searching wowhead shows that all proto-drakes have the same icon, which is shame really.

In my opinion Blizzard failes on those rare drop mounts... U can go 10-20 runs and never see it drop. Then u go there , it drops and some noob that just hit 80 wins it...

Where is fun there? its based on luck too much... Its too impossible to get.. Same with green protodrake from egg...

Blizzard should make it more obtainable... and drop should be 100% when done with both achievements on skadi, thats my point :P

15 Apr 2009. Did H UP w/ some guildies. Dropped again and I won w/ an 85 roll ^-^.

just FYI, first time i run heroic when i hit 80 is H UP, my PUG group wiped on this boss because i didn't know the fight (i didn't pick up harpoon as told so, i got panicked!), then we fight again and its drop. And i win the roll, the bad news is at that time i can't use that :( (didn't have 5kG for training)

While helping my prot warrior friend farm the tanking sword, I had the chance to see this mount drop 3 or 4 times. My statistics on the armory claim I have only done Utgarde Pinnacle 11 times lol... So just hang in there!
Both me and my friend managed to win the mount, yet we still have never seen the tank sword drop =S

For the record, the drop % on these rare mounts isn't additive.... it's multiplicative

You have a 1% chance to see this drop every time you kill Skadi. You will NEVER have a 100% chance to see it drop. If you run H UP 100 times, you have a 63.3967659% chance to have seen it once, not a 63.3967659% chance to see it drop on the 100th run. l2statistics

It is interesting (but not really important) to note that the 63.4% chance of it dropping at at least once, and it doesn't rule out the possibility of it having dropped more than once in that time. There is a 37.0% chance of it dropping exactly once in 100 runs, to which we add the 18.5% chance that it'd drop exactly twice in 100 runs, plus... and so on, up to the almost infinitesimal chance that it'd drop 100 times in 100 runs. So I finally got my Blue Proto-Drake today, about 20 minutes ago and I'm already in love with it! I love the colour and have wanted it ever since I saw someone on it back at the start of the year!

I tried to do H UP everyday but sometimes couldn't due to other things getting in the way but I got a decent amount of runs done. I'd say maybe 20-30, which is quite low if you think about it.

The funny thing about this run is that I had 3 negative people bashing me, two of which were my guildies. One was the tank on the run, he came just for fun and said: "It's not going to drop." which was a funny thing to mock him about after we looted. The second was someone who didn't want to come claiming, "If it does drop you won't win it. :)" Which was also funny. The third and final person was a random person who saw my LFM ad in trade chat and said "You mean the mount with a 1% drop rate? GL..." :)

Keep farming, it WILL drop eventually.

Yup, yup. I would rather have the Time-Lost Proto Drake or the Green Proto Drake but I'm happy with this guy. It dropped twice for me in one week, but a day a few days a part.

8/9/09 - Dropped - Won the Roll with a 80 something
8/11/09 - Dropped - Guildie Won it

Even though I like the other two proto drakes I mentioned above better and I'm still aiming for them, I have to say that I love the uniqueness of this one, as all other proto drakes have black/brown going up their heads and down their backs with some color, minus the rusted/iron bounded proto drakes, and this one is pretty much has all shades of blue all around, like the mobs that you can kill.

People should really stop trying to explain probability for the drop. It's a 1% chance per run, simple as that. No matter how much math you do to see how likely it will drop in 100 runs, it's still chance. You can't put numbers on chance.

Odd thing happened today with this but probably just a weird coincidence. While fighting Skadi the warning came up that he was doing his breath but the actual action never happened. This happened on each pass by (he never actually did the breath). A guy running with us who already has the mount said that the same thing happened when his dropped.

Must have been some weird glitch and coincidence because the mount dropped and it was the first time I had seen it. Just wanted to comment on that XD

This is like the next Baron Deathcharger mount. If you're a person that likes to collect mounts, then you'll never get it because it'll never drop. It's dropped before during a guild run for me out of pure surprise, but my then-guild leader won with a lucky roll with me at a close second... Looks great. I have never spent a penny on any optional mounts since vanilla WoW, as I never thought of mounts being a good reason to spend thousands of gold on. Though when running around Dalaran I would see people with the Black Proto-Drake I would say to myself "Damn, that IS one cool ass dragon mount" and kinda be inspired to try to get a proto-drake one day.

Then low and behold...

I go to UP to do my daily quest with a random group, and this mount drops! Never have I seen it drop after countless runs of UP. After five rolls go down the screen... I am the lucky winner.

To conclude, this IS one bad ass mount, for the fact that now in Dalaran I see more Black Proto-Drakes than this one.

Just because it drops for you on a first run doesnt mean the drop rate is higher. Yes, something dropping on the first run could be a 100% drop rate, it could also be a 0.000000000000000000000000000000001% drop rate. Achievements, speed of the kill, none of this will effect it. It will always be a 1% drop rate.

Oh, and a 1% drop rate doesnt mean you get it in 100 runs. it means every time you flip a 100 sided coin. If you flip a coin twice you are not guaranteed to get heads and tails because the coin does not have any sort of memory.

I farmed this HC like f**k to get this mount. I was gutted that I lost a drop to a friend, and then again to my guild leader. However after the patch it became tradeable to anyone in the group, so he gave it to me :p Which was really nice of him :) I was chuffed after that, as I wanted one so badly xD but it did take a long time. It dropped from Skadi just before the server closed down for maintinence. A friend told me that the drop chance increases slightly at night, but i'm not sure whether this is just a rumor or not. you guys are going about this the wrong way a 1% chance does not guarantee that you'll see this mount at least once per 100 runs

the chance that you'll see this mount drop is 1% no matter how many times you run it you could run this instance once a day for the whole year and each run will still be a 1% chance of seeing it

So there's no guarantee that you'll see this mount out of 100 runs or even 459 runs it's all a matter of how the game plays out your odds will never get better so all you can do is keep running this instance and hope that your roll is higher then everybody elses or carry a bunch of cash to payoff the person who did out roll you when the proto-drake does drop

To calculate the probability (p) of an item with x chance of dropping to drop over n number of attempts, plug your numbers into this equation:
p = 1-((1-x)^n)
To calculate your probability of seeing this item (which has a 1% chance of dropping according to Wowhead) drop over 365 attempts (every day for a regular year), turn 1% into a decimal, .01, then:
p = 1-((1-.01)^365) ≈ .974

So your probability of seeing this item drop in 365 attempts is roughly 97.4%, which is very good.
However, in a normal group of 5 participants, assuming all roll on the mount, you actually have a 20% chance of obtaining this item every time you see it drop. Due to this, you must also factor in the number of people in your party (represented by a):
p = 1-((1-x/a)^n)
p = 1-((1-.01/5)^365) ≈ .518, i.e. your chance of actually attaining this item under these conditions within a year would be 51.8%.

In a regular 5-man group, it would require 347 attempts just for the odds to be on your side (over 50%), and 1833 attempts to have an greater or equal chance compared to if you were to solo the instance for an entire year (approximately 97.4%). Your best bet would be to either wait for the level cap to be raised so that you can super-humanly solo this instance, or offer a significant amount of gold to the person who wins the roll on this mount. I prefer the second option.

Please remember that just because you are on your 365th attempt does not mean the chance that you will see the mount drop on that attempt is 97.4%. This is the probability that it will drop in a number of attempts, not for any individual attempt. The chance for this to drop for each individual attempt will always be, for as long as Blizzard does not change the drop rate, 1%.

In addition to all of this, for comparison purposes, the approximate chance that you will be able to attain Reins of the Green Proto-Drake within a year at maximum effort is 65%.

My last sybscription expired in February and I didn't play wow till November and a couple days ago i went to up hc and and the drake dropped from Skadi.2 bad i wasn't that lucky on the roll.then tomorow i went to up again and skadi dropped the drake again!i didn't get him on the roll but then i thought that blizz put the drake to drop every time when u kill skadi in the past patches so i wasn't that mad,but the next time i saw that it didn't drop and the grp member sayed that it's very rare to drop and i was disapointed.2 rare things happend so quickly and i didn't get them.now i'm going every day in up lol :) i hope this might give u some inspiring to go to up and try ur luck.this should be i think the easiest way to get a proto drake

The only problem with the theory that it will drop 100% over an amount of runs is that it can't be true because the drop rate does not increase each run. That would be nice, but it's simply not the case. The drop rate is specific, so once you run it, than the next day run it again, it's the same chance it was the previous time. The loot choice is automatically reset, so it's completely random. And no the achievement does NOT increase the chance that it will drop.

This mount finally dropped for me last night. I ran this instance over 300+ times in my wow lifetime with 2 different toons and never seen it till last night. The chance of getting it also slims more when 5 people are needing it. It may drop 1% of the time but that 1% get divided by 5 when you have a group. haha All four ppl kinda hated me after I won it. The time from that boss to the last was pretty ackward lol.

Either I've had extreme luck with this mount, or they did actually up the dropchance in 3.3.
In my 6 last runs on my paladin tank it has dropped 4 times (too bad I fail at rolling), and in one out of two runs on my rogue. Thats 5 times in 8 runs, and seeing I've run this instance on heroic probably about 100-150 times over my various 80s prior to the new LFG-system and never ever seen it, I would assume something has changed.

...or I've just had insane 'luck'. It's a very good looking mount nonetheless, only beaten by the Plagued imo, which is no longer obtainable.

I just got mine today - Jan 2nd. This is the second time I've seen it drop and the first was last week but I was on an alt, this time I got some friends together that agreed to pass and I let them bring in fresh 80's for badges and it actually dropped and I had to shake my head and look at the screen again to believe that it actually dropped.

And of course the first time it dropped the DK that couldn't break 900 DPS and didn't even know what speed the mount was nor did he have epic flying won the mount.

Avoid the cross server/LFG tool if you're trying to farm this mount, if someone from another server wins it they can't trade/sell it to you.

You can easily 3-4man this with a decent healer and a good tank, so don't keep thinking you have to find 4 other people willing to pass, It's good to have friends willing to help and that will pass if you ever happen to see it, and if it doesn't drop you still get badges so I always had people willing to go.

I now have 104 mounts, and 4 Proto-Drakes, Red, Blue, Green and TIme-Lost Proto-Drake !

theres one small detail that i havent seen mentioned. at is you still have to Win the Roll. Even if it drops you only have a 20% chance to win the roll. so if you take that into effect and factor in the drop percentage rate, a single persons odds of getting the moubnt to drop and win is like .020% at best.

I have seen the reins drop twice this week. Two guildies have seen it in the past week as well. Probably a truly weird coincidence, but maybe the drop rate was increased by quite a bit. If that were the case, I'm sure we would have had confirmation by now.

EDIT: Since I posted my comment, I have not seen the reins drop again. I've approached the fight many different ways and nothing. So rest assured, it was a coincidence and nothing more.

I've been spending weeks with my guildies running random heroics and trying to get all the achievements for Glory of the Hero done. I really wanted that Red Proto-Drake so bad.

I was down to one achievement yesterday and we had already failed it once, so now we were doing more randoms in hopes of getting into Gundrak again so we could try it once more. One of the instances we ran was Utgarde Pinnacle and sure enough, this mount dropped and by a stroke of extreme luck I won the roll. After months of running this instance almost every day, it finally happened when I least expected it.

This is by far one of the most awesome types of mounts you can earn in this game, regardless of its colour scheme, and this blue variant is easily one of the prettiest!

First time in awhile I been lucky. I was leveling my druid and decided to log on my pally before the random reset, got in right before this boss and it dropped. I was excited and I won the roll. At first I did not realize it was a proto I thought it was just a blue drake like from oculus/malygos. Anyway really liking this mount and for everyone whos farming it just remember things happen when you least expect them :P

My girlfriends swears that everyone has to live through the fight with Skadi for the drop to have any chance at occurring. While I don't give the idea any merit, I was wondering if anyone else has an opinion concerning this hypothesis.

Didn't see this posted, but found out today that you can skip the first two bosses (Svala Sorrowgrave & Gortok Palehoof) if you just want to do a quick Skadi run. Just have to blast through some of the trash before you get to him.

Skadi is easily soloable by a protection paladin; I did it in full T8.5. In T10 it's a breeze.
Blue proto drake dropped for me on a solo!

Keep Shadow Resist aura up as it is the Witch Doctors which do the most damage. Freedom out of the nets thrown by the Harpooners. Shield Wall and Holy Wrath if many adds are up.

Today (04/13/2010) I, Chromell of Llane server will have my 100th kill on Skadi to see (or not) the drake drop. With 1% chance there is no telling how many tries it will take for something to drop, the only way to find out is to keep doing it. Until then, I state: the drake is a lie.

2nd run on my new lvl 80 warlock and the bloody thing dropped, i was gonna pass as i didnt have the riding skill but i thought sod it why not, all needed and i won which made me go and buy the riding skill but since then all i get is /w saying omfg your so lucky with that blue drake.

I have seen this drop twice in two days, won it once and my friend won it the second time around.

Made me wonder if the drop chance has been increased or anything, going to run it tomorrow and see what happens.

EDIT: I have ran it another six times and nothing, so I'm guessing it was just a pure stroke of luck.

I have run this a bazillion times on my warrior and never seen it drop, first run on my fresh lock and it drops (to be won by some scrub pally). Also with the 3 min achievement. God, it is so beautiful and I am so sad right now.

Lost this mount 8 times in around 25 runs. Some of you will think that im "OMG SUPER LUCKY" to acutally have seen it that much but quite frankly, I would have prefer not seeing it that much.

The last I saw got looted to someone that already had learned it (so he needed on it), and deleted it in our face because "If you are not going to pay me 20kg for it, too bad scrubs".

Blizzard needs to fix this. You shouldnt be able to need on something you already have learned

Many of these maths would be true, if the drop chance was stated to 1%.

But in this case, wowhead has calculated drop chance to be around 1% because of the statistics.

Proto-Drake dropped 1262 times out of 99436 kills. So it has droppet about once for every 100 runs.

If statistics hold, it will drop once for every 100 run, as some people guessed.

Blizzard could have set the drop chance to 0.5% or 2% or 99%, just if so, most people have been extremely unlucky!

Anyway, this statistic could be that 98174 groups have killed this guy with no luck, and then the last 1262 groups in a row, saw it drop.

Point is, drop chance of the Proto-Drake could be allmost any %. But statistics say that if you kill this guy 100 times, and no others on your server does, in between. You will see it drop once. Statistics are often right...

Realistically, you have a .2% chance to obtain the mount. 1% chance to see it drop/5 players in the dungeon (assuming they are going to roll on it).

It should also be known that this mount drops in addition to Skadi's normal loot.

When running this instance on my own account, never saw it drop, like most of you.

When taking my GF's char through the instance for the first time, it dropped on 1st kill.. I kinda figured she wouldn't win it anyway and wadda ya know... rolled a 100 -_-

Nowadays i'm trying to avoid bossfights / encounters on her account that can drop something as nice as this ^^

I've seen this mount drop 5 times in total on my 2 80's. Twice on my DK in the past. Then on my newer resto shaman, ended up getting it on his first drop, much to my best friend who was in the party as well's anger.

I got this around 8/27/10, and have seen it drop twice both the day after and the day after that as well, adding to my total of 5 times. Three of which in the last week as of posting. I was worried they nerfed the drop, but I've done it a number of times since and haven't seen it drop. Must have been freak luck.

This thing is a very nice addition to any mount collection. It's the only flying mount my considerably mount lucky shaman rides when in the air. (Fiery warhorse when on ground). Good luck with your farming, guys. It drops, you just gotta have the perserverance to wait till it does.

Didn't really feel like reading all the comments, but I decided to contribute.
The items that you loot off of an NPC are chosen WHEN they spawn (when the server brings those NPC's into existence in game) so that means that what you do or don't do to kill the NPC in **NO** way effect the odds of the mount dropping.

i farm this every day, if you have a tank its super ez, the LFG is instant, the first run is for a UP, skip 2 first bosses and straight to skadi, kill him, and drop group. this is done under 9 min. then put youself in LFG for a random, you might get lucky and get UP again, if not, drop group log off, hop on you next toon, repeat. If you have a DPS only toon, this is a problem , as the wait time is 15 minutes, which defeats the whole point of "farming" as its not fast, how ever tanks and healers are perfect for this. so far i seen the drake 3 times. still did not win it tho. by the time you cycle thru your toons, the dungeon cooldowns from quiting the randoms ware off...so you can attempt the randoms again.

While I could bet this was just one of these “WTF, what an accident!” moments, I can't not to share this with you just for the very little chance it wasn't accident.

Because of little communication issues in our group, we've engaged both second (“frozen animals”) and third boss (Skadi) at the same time today, which resulted in the proto-drake to drop. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying “both bosses engaged at the same time = 100% chance for this to drop”, someone would surely noticed that already, I'm merely speculating if this might increase the drop chance. I guess we'll never know for sure, though.

After 35+ runs on my mage, it dropped.

One party member immediately rolled Need, another Greed. The party leader thankfully caught this, rolled Need, won the drake and asked everyone to reroll. I won the roll.

Can't say I noticed anything "different" from other runs. The RNG god just happened to like me today :)

i hate this mount =( a few weeks ago i was talking in vent with a guildy and i was in UP random H group and its drop one of the group ( PASS ) its he said he have it already !

the roll was GG no one pass 30 ! ( my roll was 7 , the winner was 28 )

my guildy was laughing at me, the day after i specific UP for the mount with the same guildy with me on vent he said he will pay me 1k if drop and it did ! the same poor roll again this time no ont pass 50 ( my roll was 40 and the winner 41 ) =(

Odds are, that if you're farming it, someone not farming it will get it first! ;)

Odds are, if two people in each random group is farming it (ie queing up for the instance and not for a random) someone not farming will get it three times out ot five if it finally drops.

Like you said, odds are those not farming once it drops.

Odds of getting it at all are in favour of those running the instance more however.

Been able to farm for this as a prot-pala before the patch (just did it a few times, it was boring)
The trashpacks before the room with Svala got 5 times worse after the patch, with the reworking of block.

I can´t imagine how bad the packs in the gauntlet up to Skadis harpoons will be... im not gonna
bother, might come back at 85 and see how much is possible to bypass.

Might run it the normal way with 4 other people, but since im just doing it for the mount... it feels a bit lackluster and
unmotivated to.

I have 8 level 80 chars, all fairly geared (Most a 5.5k gearscore or higher but a few only at 5k) and I looked at all my characters, added up how many times each of them has killed Skadi, and came to a total of 217 times I've facerolled this guy. I had never seen this mount drop.

I did it for the 218th time today, I saw it drop, rolled a 2, and lost it. This really pissed me off because according to recount I was doing 74.2% of the damage dealt, I was taking 86% of the damage dished out by the enemies, and I was doing 42% of the healing done for some unknown reason. The winner of the mount was a 192 DPS ret paladin, who was not even present for the first two bosses of the heroic.

At this point I decided that Blizzard gives me fail dungeons with the random dungeon finder, and fail dice, and ridiculously bad luck with drops, because Blizzard is pure evil. I say we stand up and rebel against Blizzard, make them run around with a bunch of people who can't wipe the drool off their face and then flaunt shinies at them that they can't have T_T

Been farming for this since 3.0.2 when he first began to drop on my hunter. Not more then two minutes ago my Shaman who I've spent not alot of time on got it on I think officially his 10th run into the place with a roll of 78. Officially the wow gods have a sense of humor.

To those who want this thing, just keep killing the boss eventually the bloody mount will drop. When it does roll and pray to what ever god you believe in, and cross all those fingers and toes....if you have a tail do that to. It helps.

Good luck on the hunt guys, my hunter will continue to run it for the mount. Since my shaman no longer needs it.

I just received this mount. I was pretty stoked. Ive seen it drop a total of three times since Wotlk has been released. One of the time's, there was a under geared rogue who just hit 80, and does not even have epic flight won it. If it was not for him i would of won it. But i have it now. All i can say for all the people trying to get it, "Keep working at it, if you dont try for it, you will never get it".

Easily soloable on my Hunter, lvl 85, average item level of 324. Mostly blues, some greens. 92k hp

Take it steadily up the path, killing all the adds. and collecting the harpoons. As a hunter i just pop off the 3 harpoons, send pet in and feign death. Never went below 70% hp for the whole encounter. My pet never went below 95%. The only issue is making sure my pet gets aggro on the new incoming mobs, or they blast me. If you have issues, wait for a quiet no mob moment and eat back to full hp.
Once you are on Skadi it really is a breeze, wait for whirlwind, make your pet taunt. Again pet was on 100% hp the whole fight.

With Camouflage i can get to Skadi without any fighting.

I am sure once the real gear gets equipped i can gather all the adds together. As of now i need to do it in stages.
A tank with equal gear should have no problems at all.

BM of course, with Tenacity pet.

So at least now if it drops i have a 100% chance of getting it.

Soloed as Ret with wannabe Prot gear (some 346 Prot blues, some 312 Prot greens and some 346 Ret blues) and Seal of Insight. Trash is fairly easy but Skadi himself turned out to be a little tricky. Just make sure to use your CDs wisely and heal yourself during Whirlwind (once you're out of range). Burning your Holy Power for nothing else but Word of Glory is a good idea as well.
Don't know if it would've been better to use Ret gear altogether since my wannabe Prot stuff really isn't all that amazing.

easily soloable as a warrior tank at 85 but i would advise in keeping two adds up once you bring him down from the drake so that you can kill them to pop a victory rush if needed. they won't do much damage so they are definitely worth the 30-40k self heal.

For an assassination rogue, I managed the event just fine, but the boss just crushed me. I tried sprinting, evasion, first aid, cooldowns, but it just crushed me. I'm thinking maybe some better gear/enchants and imp recuperate would make it possible, but if you're not prepared to solo this, don't even try as rogue. Go with a friend : )

I will give a few pointers though. When you're passing the boss and the event starts, immediately pop sprint so you reach the adds while they're still in a pack and they don't have time to seperate. Pop evasion and combat readiness, and just burn them down with fan of knives. When the adds start spawning from the room, make sure you're standing out of aggro range from the three mobs at the harpoons. This way you can keep killing the adds until your cooldowns are back if you don't feel safe without them (but you shouldn't need them). You should also shoot two of the harpoons and then keep killing adds until your cooldowns are back. Make sure you continously use recuperate throughout the fight, and make sure not to shoot the last harpoon just as two adds spawn. The additional pressure will be a bother. Try to burst down skaldi and sprint away and first aid when he whirlwinds.

Easily soloable as enhance shaman. I had 345 ilvl when I tried it.

For the dungeon trash up until the boss that you can't pass by without aggroing it's safest to hex the healer mobs or a wolf depending on what group you are facing. If there were more then 3 mobs I would use my wolves just to be safe.

At the boss encounter it is important to remember that you don't need to rush yourself and take too many mobs at a time. They go down quite quickly and using a bit of aoe from Magma Totem and Fire Nova will help with the big groups. Wait until all the mobs are dead and your cool downs are ready before calling the boss down.

When battling Skadi I popped wolves, trinkets, bloodlust and my rock elemental at the start. Heal yourself on Maelstrom Weapon 5 stacks. When he does whirlwind the first time your wolves should still be out. Have them taunt. You should be able to stand in the ww with the wolves healing you. If you are taking to much damage just move away as he will be after the wolves and not you. If he does a second whirlwind use your Shamanistic Rage to help reduce the damage you take. I also needed to heal myself in ww while running away with Spiritwalker's Grace.

I soloed it as well with a BM "stay alive" spec and Terrorpene as my tank. With Glyph of misdirection it makes it a lot easier. As a hunter you can camo through most of the way to Skadi. I wiped prob 3-4 times my first day trying but was able to one shot it afterwards. After the 4th day or so he dropped the blue proto drake so I was pretty happy with that. The last time I saw those drop was probably a year ago.

I just soloed this boss as a DK it was very easy. I don't have any tank gear, but I switched to blood spec for some extra survivability. I just used my pvp gear AIL 331. So if you want this mount and not a tank, but have a class that can be a tank then jus get a tank spec. hopefully mount will drop soon!
I think you can skip first boss, I know you can skip second boss so the only thing is dealing with trash got a little tricky that’s why I got a blood spec.

Soloing this for a week now, 8-9min for blood DK tank (atm ilvl 353).
I'm skipping as much as i can, some mobs can't be skipped however.
Trash takes me 5-6min or so and additional 2-3 min for boss.
Pretty easy, still waiting for drop however.

After this sweet mount drops, to Stonecore normal! :)

Mages don't worry, it's easyil soloable even for you.
If you can't pull good dps in fire spec (minimum 17k), respect to arcane.

When the skadi's event starts, wait where skadi was before the event started. Mobs are gonna come to you in groups of two. kill them and also take care of mobs that are constantly spawning and running to you. You can eat food inbetween killing mobs to recover your mana and health.

Once you get 3 harpoons and all the stationary mobs are dead, go shoot harpunes at skadi. When he jumps down, immidiately use mirror image, and if they don't take aggro in 2 seconds use invisibility to lose aggro. As soon as skadi is on your mirror images, pop time warp, trinkets, arcane power, everything you have and just spamm arcane blast (i have 70k mana and i don't run out before he is dead) because you now have about 25 sec to take his 450k health miror images dissapear. If he starts killing you you might end up dead. Just for the case have mana gem and maybe a mana potion ready.
My gear is nothing special (6k SP, 24% crit, 105k hp), 2 BoE epics and the rest is PvP.

easily soloable as a combat rogue, i just use my pvp gear, start with a cheapshot on first mob and add 3 more points for a 5 point recup then kill next mob, redirect his points to the one after him and put a 5 point snd, with deadly momentum its easy to pick your way to the end, until only the 2 are spawning take skadi down right befor the 2 spawn again and put blade flurry up (now a toggle switch) and and pop combat readiness and adreniline rush as he comes down. the 2 mobs there allow u to keep your recup up when they die, toggle blade flury off use evasion and finish him... i have 114k hp and this guy is so easy i feel like it wont even be worth it to get the mount. got green proto drake 5 days ago, time lost proto drake 3 days ago, hoping to finish the week off with blue proto. lol

as long as you are combat spec with deadly momentum and relelntless strikes. this fight is EASY, assasination and sub are too soft, you will die vs skadi most likely.

easily soloable by any 85 lvl now i think. Just did it with a blood dk without any problems, was just irritating that i had to kill every pack of creeps till the boss.

First heroic run with this char and the mount dropped for me! was pretty nice having in mind i have never had any luck with such drops :D

Easily solo'ed by a BM hunter with a bear pet....going for rep so I clear the whole instance and even got the achievement on the last boss (solo).

Just keep your pet healed and MD as much as you can and its all a breeze.

Edit: Been soloing this for about 3 weeks now and working on LK rep..clearing the instance about 50% of the time. I kill him faster as survival....but BM is fun too. Keeping at it...not stopping until I get the drake. As its been posted I'll also agree that I never saw this drop during heroics in LK...

I got mine today after I've been farming it for around 3 weeks, Im so damn happy. I did this as a frost mage. I used blink at start to grab almost all the inc adds, AoE them down with pets freeze and then blizzard> easy cake. Looted the harpoons, shot him down and popped illus so I lost all threat ( illus tanked him, very useful), Time Warp to get him down a.s.a.p and I almost got an heart attack when I looted, there was the shiny blue proto drake.

And I would like to say to other farmers out there, DO NOT give up. I've NEVER seen this mount dropped under the expansion Wrath of the Lich King so I though drop rate must be very very low, even tho I got Utgarde Pinnacle as daily heroic almost every day O.o

At lvl 85, i can kill him as a fury warrior. Victory rush the adds and health regen is nice. Also if you are a night elf you can skip a lot of the adds. Go on the snow to the left, shadowmeld if you pull. Heroic leap over mobs.

So this is very quick for Nelf warriors, you can shadowmeld and leap over half the adds you have to fight on the way.
Soloing the boss is easy, you regen health when low and with those two adds that aways come in they are easy victory rushes.

Most already know this, but some, like me, are unsure so here: i can confirm that you don't need to kill any other boss or for that matter any other mob for the mount to drop. mine droped on the 75th kill, after killing only skadi and 3 mobs on the stairs

Confirming from my own experience that Fury Warriors can easily solo this with barely any gear. From entering to have killed Skadi should take from between 6-10 minutes for most 85's.

I'm not sure how many kills it took me to get it, but I was lucky and got it after around two weeks of farming it every day, keep doing your daily run and it will drop eventually.

Decided to start farming this at 84 as prot warrior with my wife an 84 hunter. Easy to do of course. Expecting weeks of tries but got the drake on try number one. So excited!

As a Assasination PvP rogue I can comfirm you can do this....Just
Stealth through dungeon, get to the walk away, just KEEP RECUP up ALWAYS, do it slowly, 3-4 mobs at a time, moveing forward....when you get the 5-6 mobs at end, blind one, gouge another followed by kidney punch and disarm another while smashing the other three and start to WALK AWAY from Skadi....back down the hall way kiting the mobs, this allows you to gain health and energy.
Once your back to 2-3 mobs coming out of the walk way....start hitting skadi with the harpoons.....when he spins, blind a random mob, run down the walk way and start smashing skadi.
I had recup up 24/7, deadly on main, instant on off, instant on thrown, you need to make clear use of misdirect (for points to switch target).

I just got this sexy dragon drop on my prot pally on gilneas. I think this is my 15th time up to 20th time running this dungeon which isnt bad considering its drop rate .

as a combat rogue in ilvl 359, this is completely trivial and requires no tactics or unusual talents whatsoever. downed in 20 seconds.

On an 85 rogue, you can just sneak in, skip the trash, and complete the event within 10 minutes easy.

Since rogues, even at 85, are kind of squishy, here is my personal strategy:

Keep Recuperate up as you're mowing-down the ghouls in that gauntlet; FoK them up. If you're Combat spec, Blade Flurry will make this part even simpler.
Don't shoot your last harpoon unless you're at full health.
Pop Readiness right when he comes down.
Use Dismantle.
Kill any ghouls that may have emerged right as Skadi entered.
When Skadi starts his whirlwind, Sprint away and bandage yourself (Note: you'll need to Cloak off the poisoned spear dot to make bandaging effective. Dwarf rogues use racial talent instead and save Cloak for later).
Pop your damaging cooldowns and Evasion and destroy him.
Loot his corpse, find some piece of junk (no mount again), /cry.

Today I did the instance with my friend (we are both frost mages) because he was about to finish the Children's Week event and get his purple proto-drake. We did heroic mode, and we got both achievements (I had never been there on my mage) and the reins dropped. It was my first time ever being there.

Accidentally solo'd him as an 85 Hunter while going for the Children's Week achievement to kill the final boss of Utgarde Pinnacle.

I used Camouflage to skip through the entire instance and just had my bear tank this boss along with the adds. Pretty easy kill and I managed to get the Reins of the Blue Proto-Drake off of the first attempt. Not bad for an accidental kill.

Tips for getting to Skadi quickly if you're farming for this mount:

1. If you have an ability such blink or heroic leap, the mobs in the room filled with gold can be skipped by going from the top of the ramp to the front of the door (may have to move around a little to make sure you're in view of the door).

2. If you don't have stealth, the abominations in the first hallway can be skipped by jumping up the crates to the left and going along the snow.

3. For those who are unobservant (like i was :P), the first boss can be skipped.

4. The mobs of wolves and ranged val'kyr at the bottom of the steps, leading up to the hall with stuffed beasts, can be skipped.

5. The second boss, just before Skadi, can be skipped.

6. When walking through the mob filled hallway after Skadi takes off, it's quicker and easier to pull every mob in this hallway to the end, and AoE them all down, assuming you are a high enough level to take on this many mobs at a time. This can be done even quicker by charging from mob to mob, sprinting, or using an ability equivalent to Heroic Leap to quickly reach the end of the hallway. If you time it right, you can just leap past some of these mobs as they run down the hallway at you.

According the most of the sources i have researched it is indeed a 1.6% drop chance. That means if you run Utgarde Pinnacle 62.5 times (100/1.6=62.5), then you should expect it to drop. For all you people who think this mount is impossible to get then your wrong because 1.6% multiplied by 3 is 4.8%. That is very close to Green Proto Drake which hatches in 3 days(5% drop chance). So comparing those two statistics Blue and Green Proto Drake are just as rare to get. I don't yet have this mount but I have been farming it for a week or so. Just think of it as a daily. As an 85 with and ilvl of 348 i find it not hard to solo Skadi. Good Luck though :).

Super easy solo-able by 353 Blood DK, it takes about 10 or 15 minutes, so i think chances to loot the mount jumps greatly..!

Solo'd Skadi and it dropped for me today as a 360 ilvl blood dk. The trash leading up to him, along with the fight is fairly trivial, with only taking about 2 minutes to kill him. Only thing worth running away from was his whirlwind and even then that didn't hit hard at all either.

Dropped after 2 weeks of heading in daily, so don't give up if it hasn't dropped yet.

I've Been solo'ing this on my il358 arcane mage, and finally dropped the other day for me. Really easy fight for a mage if you keep your distance, and arcane blast appropriately. Used my Mirror Image as a distraction for Skadi popped cool downs and blew him up. As a geared 85 now, almost any class should have no problem downing this boss.

Many classes @ 85 are OP for this place even on heroic and just as a side note you can Skip the first two bosses if you wanna farm for this .

I was able to do this with my Hunter with ilevel 358s but I'm sure you can easily do it with 350. Used Turtle Pet as a "tank" and toss him one mend pet (probably not even necessary) but downed the boss in 26 seconds , most of it was due to running from his whirlwind.

Just solo'ed up to Skadi in literally 5 minutes. Fury Warrior, ilvl 365. Easiest thing I've ever solo'ed. Ran through trash and destroyed Skadi in 1 minute.

This is easily soloable as a lvl 85 Arcane Mage. (372 ilvl gear when I wrote this)
I didnt even have to use evocation to get HP during the whole instance.

Could probably be doable by any lvl 85 mage.

Decided to try and solo this after watching the Youtube video. It was actually an easy solo on an 85 Hunter (i359). But, no drake drop and it wasn't fun. Good luck to whoever has the patience to do this again and again.

I didn't even have a chance to lose the roll and I been soloin' it as much as I can since Cata dropped, and all i seem to get is the spell blade or the staff lol...I had good luck with the Anzu and Kaelthas mounts in the BC heroics, but this one is just eluding me entirely :)

This should be given as reward from exalted with Sons of Hodir considering you take one using the flightpath from Dun Niffelem. Thats just my two cents, it would make rep with them really worth it. I'm doing them just for the 100 mounts acievement, but I hate running dungeons and raids.

That is incorrect. According to Bashiok, mounts coming from the 一包神秘的异域物品 have the same rarity as they do when slaying the boss they originally come from.

He says:

We also wanted to clarify, mounts that have a possibility to be found in a Satchel of Exotic Mysteries are found with the same rarity as if you had slain the dungeon boss that normally drops them.

Ok guys! This mount doesn't drop only from the boss in utgarde, today I have opened a box in my bag and there it was....also the bag had a jewel and some other creapy item it wasn't one of those boxes that only rogues can open, sorry I can't remmeber it's name or where I looted it from but it was for sure a normal box...anyone have any ideea about it's name and drop?

The luck of the Ancestors were with me today for sure. Double whammy. Farmed Skadi (was getting sick of seeing his damn belt drop), closed my eyes after the loot --took a deep breath-- and WHAAMMM. Purple Letters right in my face lol. Let out a howl of joy, such a cool feeling....oh no, but I'm not done...had a Mysterious Egg from the Oracles in my bag that hatched....I think you know where this is going. WHAAAAMMM. Purple letters again. Green and Blue dragons on the same day. I'm dead serious lol. I couldn't believe it. Such a happy day. Farmed Utgarde for about a month and a half and went through maybe 5 eggs. Overall not a bad investment. Popped some giant growth and flew around Org on my two prizes for an hour showing off. (I know not like I'm the only one that has them, but still)

finally got this after a couple of years of doing it for heroics everyday during wotlk, and recently soloing about a dozen or so times. i was amazed that it actually dropped, i was started to think my character was bugged for drops -_- @_@ lol. This mount drops from Skadi the Ruthless on heroic mode only, there are 2 related achievements to this boss which are pretty easy to accomplish. Soloed it as a 85 fury warrior, Skadi can hit for 10k+ on plate. He also does a whirlwind ability which is quite annoying. I survived by killing the trash and then using victory rush. Drop chance is probably higher than 1.6% because I got this baby after 5 days. Not sure if any cloth-wearing classes are capable of surviving this.
One of the best looking mounts in-game IMO.

I can confirm that it still drops in Cata, 45 Skadi the rutheless kills. And it took more than 3 minutes the time it did drop. Unfortunately it's all pure drop chance as it has a 1% drop rating. Don't give up hope! It will surely test your patience.

To solo as an Arcane Mage, take your time getting to the harpoon launchers, killing the mobs two or three at a time and waiting for the groups of adds as they come out. You should have nearly full mana / hp when you get to the harpoon launchers. As Skadi is dismounted, I like blink and start running ahead in a sideways fashion throwing Arcane Barrage as I go. If I'm not far enough ahead, I'll use rocket boots when Skadi starts his spinning attack.

As of 4.3, I got lazy and just started running in with arcane blast and one-shotting the adds with arcane barrage. I get my harpoons, cast ring of frost at the entry where additional adds come out and evocate before Skadi's second pass.

If necessary, use Iceblock to survive Skadi's spinning attack. He ignores mirror images when he's in this mode, so don't bother using them yet. When he's done spinning, drop mirror image and unload on him.

I was always a big fan of the drake, always wanted it but never was too over excited about getting it. So one day I decided why not start farming for this drake once a day and i am bound to get it, which is true because it would only be inevitable that one day i would get it. Anyways on my 2nd day of farming the boat to northrend appeared but i thought (was this worth it? would i honestly get it?) and i decided not to go on the boat. An hour later i decided one more try and headed to utgarde pinnacle and guess what, I GOT IT. So that basically gave me a morale boost and i must say usually once u start doubting a drop or a mount or somthing is usually when u do actually get it (like blizzard can feel bad for u or somthing)

After months of farming, this mount finally dropped for me. I was so happy I could cry! I jumped up and down my apartment with joy. Then I woke up only to realize that was just a dream...

Several weeks later, this mount dropped for real. Woot! Finally! I've had dreams of getting this mount and I finally got it! Then I woke up again...

This went on quite a few time so the next time this dropped, I wasn't very excited. I wasn't going to be fooled again so I decided to wait until I woke up the next morning before getting excited about this. I went to bed and woke up the next day. I logged on to WoW expecting to not see this mount.

Holy crap! To my surprise, it was still there! It wasn't a dream! HECK, YEAH! I FINALLY GOT THIS MOUNT, YES!

Then I woke up again...

Blizzard, thank you for increasing the drop chance of the Green Proto Drake. If you can do the same for this mount, I'm sure it'll help a lot of players keep their sanity. Thank you.

Also, for any players who have multiple characters that can solo farm for this mount, it wouldn't be a bad idea to farm this on multiple characters. Depending on how the account wide companions go, Blizzard stated that they may make mounts account wide as well. Depending on how many characters you run this with, this will multiply the chances of you getting this mount. Another thing to keep in mind is that Blizzard said they might crunch stats, which may make it harder (or possibly impossible) to solo farm for this mount when the next expansion comes out.

I played WOTLK for maybe 2 years and never saw this stupid thing drop. I would do it almost every day and never even got to roll on it because it never dropped.

And today, out of boredom, I went into UP and killed him myself just to see if it dropped

and it did.

So I've been hunting for this mount for the past two weeks. Every day, depending on the time / how bored I was, I would do a run of the dungeon three to five times. At one point, Skadi the Ruthless dropped "Frigid Mail Gloves." After all of those runs, I was curious to know what the drop rate was (if it was, say, a 2% chance, then it wouldn't be much of a difference from the mount's drop rate...)
Turns out, that item wasn't on the list! Curious, I noticed that drops I'd been getting all the time like Drake Rider's Tunic were only dropped in normal mode... I'd been doing the wrong dungeon the entire time!
Saddened, I decided to do a heroic run, and found it was a lot harder to solo, even as an 85 hunter. To my amazing luck, Skadi decided to drop the mount on that one run. Makes up for all of those other ones, I guess!

Dropped today on my 6th run,most easily soloed as an Arms warrior with full PvP gear,just keep using victory rush and your health never goes down.

If you are after this mount,i highly reccomend skipping first boss(just keep walking through the stairs) and the second boss which is next to skadi's hall simply by not activating the orb.

Have been solo farming for this beautiful mount as an ilvl 378 Elemental shaman for 2 weeks so far. Im a draenei and no other mount would match my pretty blue skin as well as this. :) Skip the first 2 bosses, drop earth and fire elemental totems just after I shoot Skadi out of the sky. Keep my distance and it's a non-issue. No luck yet, (I am generally the last person to ever get the drops I want.) but I am a shammy on a mission.

49 kills and I finally got it. What I learned from doing this so often was that heroic wrath dungeons such as this are a good place to collect Grisly Trophies for the DMF, just go for a full clear. Decent amount of gold and cloth and greens if you loot and vendor. Such little side things make it a lot less frustrating.

I will say this was not always easy. Here and there there I would get bursted on and because I was a pally(ret), my heals made this do-able. I sorta doubt it would be without. Solo, Skadi wasn't too terrible, just a dps race to not run out of hp and mana. Killing the trash as quick as possible was the most viable for me (as opposed to taking it rank by rank). Pop all the CDs when I got him down. I could avoided the whirlwind or just take it, didn't seem to be too bad on plate.

How to farm for this lovely pet:

1) Get your character to a reasonably powerful ilvl, doesn't matter which race or class(370+ is great)

2) Go to UP

3) Enter, kill the 3 skeletons at right side, jump down, go right, kill everything in path, skip 1st boss, kill the big guy, skip 2nd boss, kill everyone until you have 5 harpoons

4) Shoot harpoons at boss, at 5 strikes he will come down

5) Kill him the way you want to(Tanks and plate users have easier time, however if you play your class well, like frost mage or enchantment shaman, you will kill him easily)

6) Open the loot with best hopes

I did this 5 times and today I got my drake :)

Just got this on my 5th run through last night. I probably shouldnt even have it if it wasnt for a guildie needing the 'my girl loves to skadi' achievement either. She told me that she had gotten it on her first run thru, in a WotLK random heroic, and rolled 100 on the need roll. So I for sure was bringing this lucky rabbits foot with me lol.

So we go through it, and we get to skadi, but instead of just going to the end and letting the dragon pass thru a couple of times, we grabbed a couple of harpoons each, and we reset the boss for the achieve. We eventually bring him down, and lo and behold, there was the mount. It was pretty awesome, considering after we told the guild what happened, some guy started nerd raging about how hes been trying to get it for the past year. It was pretty funny, but good luck to all of you guys still trying to get this. Its an amazing looking mount, and it will be worth it.

Also, maybe bring someone who has good fortune in this game with the RNG gods. It couldnt hurt.

I'm Hunter MM, 383 ilevel. It is easy, and pretty fast to try. As I'm engineer, I use the wormhole stuff to teleport to Howling Fjord. This portal will bring you on the opposite side of the tower that has the entrance for the instance.

1 - Set it to heroic
2 - Get in
3 - Aspect of Cheetah
4 - Use Camouflage
5 - Walk to the boss skipping all the adds (you will need to activate Camouflage again. For me, it happens on the stair that has a patrol with a wolf pet. If he sees you, feign death)
6 - Start the fight. Missdirection on your pet, mult-shot the first pack of 4 or 5 mobs.
7 - Once new adds comes up, MD your pet again (use MD glyph). Use Mend pet.
8 - Collect the harpoons and watch the boss. When he stands on front of canons, shoot the harpoons on him. After 3 shoots, boss will get down.
9 - MD your pet again, mend pet, burn the boss. Pretty easy.

For fellow Hunters out there. If you camouflage as you pull Skadi you can run down the hallway and not have to kill those mobs. It's like walking through a trip wire. If you feign death when your in combat, then everything resets so be careful with that.

So, I hit UK last year for quite a while trying to get this mount on my paladin (She got 乌鸦之神的缰绳 on her first attempt in AUCH ever, so I thought, "well, aren't they ALL 100% drop rates?" ;) This one is damned elusive! After a couple months away leveling my RL, I logged back into Azeroth and decided to crank up the grind for this mount again. First attempt back - dropped like skrillex ;)

BTW - easily soloable by RET paladin.

Okay, so for hunters who want to solo this:
First be 85, makes getting past enemies much easier now that you have camouflage. With camouflage and aspect of the pack/cheetah on, you can get to Skadi in 1 min.
Make sure you have either a turtle, beetle, or shale spider on you. IMPORTANT: Make sure that your pet has Thunderstomp otherwise it'll be hard for him to keep aggro. Even with Thunderstomp, you will still need to actively cast misdirection once every 20 seconds before you take down Grauf. Which means you'll also need the misdirect glyph.
When you start the "event", keep aspect of cheetah/pack on until you get about half way then switch to aspect of the fox. (Use fox so you dont have to switch later.) Then Misdirect on your pet, and cast multishot at the inc 6-8 vykrul mobs. This will cut your time by 2/3s.
Make sure you pick up at least 3 harpoons.
Once these mobs are killed move upwards towards the last mob and kill them plus the adds that have been spawning to your left. Once the "main" mobs (ones that are not spawning) are killed, and Grauf is in range, shoot down with all 3 harpoons at once.
Focus on the last of the adds. Once Skadi comes out there wont be anymore spawning. Then keep mend pet active on your pet and spam arcane shot. Use Beastal Wrath + Fervor if you're a BM and you feel like using it and killing him fast.
When you slay Skadi, you will get My Girl Loves to Skadi All the Time at the very least. Of course right now the drop rate is 1.5% for the mount so good luck in farming him!

Been farming this fellow for months without seeing it. I have my nitro-boosts, misdirected and camouflages timed down to a dance routine. I know where each mob will be, how fast they patrol and how long Svala sorrowgrave's speech takes (I usually reach said by the time she finishes). I have seen the proto-drake drop ONCE in my WOW career, and my wonderful girlfriend is currently riding it. One day, it will be mine.

FYI as a rogue or druid soloing this, you can stealth past all the mobs in the gauntlet. I usually just kill the last 2 to give a bit of moving room.

A little tip for those trying to solo their way through this: Once you start the Skadi battle, wait for the first group of adds, then work your way to the harpoon launchers, picking up harpoons along the way. Gather three harpoons as soon as possible. Once you do this you can stand at the middle launcher against the wall and the adds will pass you by allowing you to heal up and prepare for the final battle against Skadi. Then just wait for him to come by and shoot all three harpoons in quick succession. For those of you not geared to the teeth this will give you the time you need to hit Skadi with everything you have.

So, I was doing the achievement "Hail to the King, Baby" (Children's week, where you kill the King). When I got to this boss, I killed him in under 3 minutes (I got the achievement for it) and the mount also dropped. Children's week and the 3 minute are probably not relevant, but regardless, I'm pumped.

I easily solo'd this as a 396 Sub Rogue.

I've got mine after 3 months of farming every single day. It was painful and I was close to give up but today was my turn to get it. Everyone who also farm this mount for really long time - don't give up! It's better to try everyday and finally get prot-drake than don't go and have nothing. :)

I did this for 8 weeks and got it. I was a 375 Item level warrior. It's a bit of a long fight, thank goodness there are adds there. ( Kill one and get Victory Rush - Giving health back ) Pallys, Warriors, druids, mages, Rogues, Death knights. Not sure about others. I bet all class can you do it if there geared.

This beauty dropped last night for me at my 7th run! I thought I was in for a very long grind but seems I was lucky.

Very easily soloable as a shadowpriest (My Ilvl is 397). After the harpoons pop your shadowfiend, fade and dps/kite him down. It should be a very fast kill

My friend Axura on the US-Ursin Server and I were farming for this for a lil' over a week, maybe two.. Each day we'd do a run. Sometimes he'd try and solo it, he's an undead hunter at item level of about... 350ish? Not sure, but needless to say, it dropped suddenly on the 2nd of June and he was excited. Now I'm farming it each day.. Still no drop yet, but I'm hopeful!

Got it yesterday after two months soloing UP every day.

I was camping for the Time-Lost Proto Drake for two weeks and I decided to give up. I remembered I hadn't run UP yet, so I flew there wishing for the best.

My main spec is destruction and I couldn't survive this way, so I switched to demonology whenever I ran UP. Skipped the first two bosses, only killing trash mobs.

It took a while, but I collected plenty of cloth for my tailoring and some greens to vendor while I was trying to get the drake.

If you are an engineer i recommand killing all the trash, because it gives reputation with Horde Expedition, allowing you to buy the motorbike recipe, when you get exalted.

You don't have to kill any other bosses, neither do you have to wait for 3 minutes (to fail achievement).

I stealthed through the entire dungeon, only killing the mobs before Skadi.

Dear Blizzard Employees ,

I have been facing off with Skadi the Rutheless for three months now. When I log into WoW, I do my Hyjal dailies. Then Tol Barad. If we do not have Tol Barad at the moment, I head to Northrend. I complete my Oracle dailies that I have just started on. I make several passes through Storm Peaks. I then head to Howling Fjord for my "Skadi Time".

My point of writing this message is simple; I'm quite uncomfortable with the loot Skadi continuously drops for me on Heroic. It's all one BIG sexual innuendo. Every afternoon I'm leaving Utgarde Pinnacle with either his belt, his pants, or his sword in my bags, and a horrified look on my face. Why do I keep running this instance you ask? I would like to obtain this rare, beautiful creature and tame it as a mount, like any other player would! Please, do me a huge favor, and drop this mount for me on my next run. It's the least you could do to compensate the continuous sexual harassment Skadi is placing upon me.

Just dropped for me after about 25 solo kills. Fastest way is to skip first two bosses and head right for Skadi's gauntlet. I would not consider myself to be a lucky person at all, but less than 24 hours ago the green proto dropped from egg as well. So keep farming and you will get them... i hope :)

Just picked it up. Only saw it once across all my characters back in wotlk. Unsure how many solo attempts I've done, but I haven't been going at it for more than a month.
One thing I noticed this kill was that he didn't do his bladestorm attack. Probably a coincidence but hey... I find that when you get into mindless grinds for mounts you have to hold onto hope somehow.

Some Soloing information:
First of all, several packs are skippable. Assuming that you want to get to Skadi ASAP, skip as many packs as you can. Always stay as far away from them as you can. Like really tightly. The group at the top of the stairs is also skippable, again just pack right in. Svala is skippable obviously. The room with the giant monsters in it is actually a boss. It only activates if you click the little stone thing, so basically, don't. As a stealther (feral kitty) it's very easy all the packs are skippable, including the ones in the Skadi gauntlet. As a tank (blood) it's still very simple, just blitz through, plus SMeld will work, just check for DoTs first.

9/4/2012 It still drops off Skadi. I had been farming for months, I have two accounts and was running my Pally, DK, Hunter, Druid all solo and Mage/Shaman as a duo. Did Druid, Hunter, DK today and it dropped when my Pally got him. Now it's Battle Net Account bound so it's on both account!

Would like to update that I have not been told that anyone has seen it drop since 5.0.4. However, that does not mean it isn't still dropping.

I noticed when 5.0.4 was released, the blue proto was listed in the "updated" dungeon journal. However, after many hotfixes - it is no longer listed. This goes for other rare mount drops in heroic dungeons. But I did get the raven lord in SH the day 5.0.4 was released so I believe they are still dropping but Blizz is being more "Secretive" about it (aka rare).

Woot! Just had this drop tonight. Quite easy soloing with a level 85 Retribution Paladin. It was only my 3rd run, so I think I was quite lucky unless they increased the drop chance or something. Unfortunately my characters are poor and I don't have the 4000 gold required for Artisan riding on the character I had this drop for, so it'll be a little bit until I can use this.

I wonder if the drop rate has been boosted somewhat. This mount went from fairly rare on my server to seemingly common in about a week after the 5.04 patch. In the ensuing weeks I've seen more people on it than I can ever remember before, and it fell for me as well. Has anybody else seen this on their servers?

Ok i'm new to this site but i wanted to help out anyone i can to get the Blue Proto Drake. I ended up getting the mount on my first run, and what i did was pretty much skip a majority of the mobs and only defeated the first boss. When i got to skadi i got both achievements for defeating him in 3 minutes AND defeating him with the harpoons in one pass. I'm not sure if i just got extremely lucky or if i happened across the way to getting this to drop.... Good luck to those who still need this mount!

The achv has nothing to do with the drop rate on this item. As stated before, the loot table is already decided when you enter the instance. After MoP came out, I decided to solo it at 90 and it finally dropped for me today. I am a bm hunter and just camo all the way to Skadi, and then I used the Barrage talent to take out the trash in seconds.

This mount has a slightly higher numerical drop rate to the Ashes of A'lar. However, due to Lich King Heroics being based off of an individual lottery when you enter the instance (versus an algorithm-based drop system in The Eye), the drop chance might even be lower.

I got it out of pure dumb luck, as did everyone else who has it. The key is farming, because number crunching doesn't really work in Lich King instances.

Good luck, though! It's a very cool mount, and (like the Mammoths) if you're a Tauren, the damn thing huge!

go from 0/1000 neutral to 999/1000 exalted with horde expedition on all 5 toons jsut from running the instance - check
memorize every mob and how to avoid them on each toon - check
subconsciously memorize svala sorrowgrave' and skadi' intro monologue - check
get stupid-lucky and have mount drop - still working on that

Just got the Blue Proto this morning on server Ysera. I was starting to think that it was never gonna drop for me, but after 300 runs on three different chars the reins finally drop (I did not get the reins from the satchel though). This mount is perfect for my frost dk, I cant be happier! Don't give up on the drake... sooner or later the reins will drop for you. :)

After 178 runs across 3 toons I finally got Skadi to drop my very own blue proto-drake! It was a long grind! I got exalted with 5 factions doing these runs! I'm sure it will take a while before the dreams of wandering around Utgarde killing Skadi will subside. I first saw this mount drop when WotLK was brand new. Sadly I lost the roll, but I knew I had to have this mount and never gave up. If you are still farming this mount don't give up! It will happen! :)

If you are grinding for 蓝色始祖幼龙的缰绳, here's how to get to 残忍的斯卡迪 while killing the least amount of mobs possible:

How to get there (Horde only, I assume):
Take a portal to 达拉然, and fly to Vengeance Landing in 嚎风峡湾 (the flight path from 达拉然 will take you straight there). When landed, look West, and you should see the wooden lift. Fly up, and around the right side of the dragon's head, as the entrance is on the North side of the castle (57, 46).

When inside 乌特加德之巅:
In the King's Hoard (the first room with the gold), run in between the torch and raised ground (43, 33).
In Raven's Watch, run on to the large pile of snow, and stay left. Use a targetable AOE on the mobs to the right of the second pillar to avoid aggroing the pat mob. Run past the 天灾巨人, staying close to the snow. When you get to the mob of four by the fire, jump on to the ledge of the pillar to the left (from the snowpile) and run around the left of the dragon lantern.
In Observence Hall, just ignore and run past 席瓦拉·索格蕾. She won't aggro because of her conversation with the Lich King (if you run through fast enough, she'll still be talking when you get to 残忍的斯卡迪). Stick to the left wall as you turn the corner.
To avoid aggroing the pat on the stairs (伊米亚猎血者 and two wolves) wait until they're standing at the top of the stairs to run by them on the left.
In the Trophy Hall, run alongside the right pillars to avoid the pat.

For 残忍的斯卡迪, run towards the harpoon launchers while collecting all the mobs and throw an AOE on the ground. Collect three of the harpoons, stand between to launchers so you're in range of both of them, and wait for 残忍的斯卡迪 to fly in front of them. Harpoon him down (click left launcher, right, and then left; or vice versa) and DPS.
There will only be two trash mobs left over that will keep you in combat after you kill 残忍的斯卡迪.

It is notable that while the drake is blue, its breath remains beige. I believe that this needs fixing, since it doesn't look right. A blue breath would be so much cooler!

Unfortunately I am almost ready to give up on this, looking at about 300+ runs now across my characters, I know the drop rate is low, but come on! As mentioned below it does allow you to get exalted with loads of factions from WOTLK not to mention the 7 honor points Skadi gives you for the pleasure of ruining his day of course, have about 2500 now and have never once PVP`d. If you are going for this mount just remember it may take a while and don't get too angry with those lovely people who "got it on my 1st run, woot!". Good luck drake hunters.

Some quick calculations on farm and chance:

Flat chance 1/70 of dropping. This does not change. You could get it the first run, or get to the theoretical binomial limit below.

Farm is assumed to be once per day, and is estimated by the Poisson formula.

If very lucky within binomial 33.33% (1 in 3) will get this by 29 days.

On average, people will get this within binomial 66.67% (2 in 3) counting 2 months 16 days.

If EXTREMELY unlucky, at 95.83% (22 to 23, out of 24 people will have gotten it before you), you'll have to farm this for a staggering 7 months 8 days!

With all theoretical computer simulated testing, 1 million (out of 1 million) people will be virtually guaranteed to get this within 2 years 9 months 13 days. If you need to farm this longer than that, consider yourself cursed by a demon.

Just got the drop in patch 5.1 landfall. Sent in the three of my characters that are able to solo it once a day for a few weeks. 62 skadi kills altogether. I skipped both of the earlier bosses and i've had both skadi achievements already.

It's still a drop even though the dungeon journal doesn't show it as one, and there are no tricks to increase the drop rate. Just keep plugging away.

Just could not sop smiling, my girlfriend was also happy as she no longer has to hear my moaning about the low drop rate etc. Really worth the wait and if anything will appreciate this mount even more for the hassle I went to in obtaining it. Don't lose heart on this one, believe me it will drop for you eventually. Bit sad about not seeing Skadi anymore now, he has become like a stingy friend who never bought a round at the pub...

Great example of why people avoid MMO`s, was simply trying to verify it still dropped and that people should not giving up chasing their dream mounts. But thanks for the hate Enterthevoid, enjoy your bitter small minded existence, I shall think twice about entering into dialogue with the wow "community" from now on. Jeez...

As I waited for an Xmog run of DS10 to form I decided to solo this for the very first time and the very first run(heroic wise) for the heck of it. I usally seem to get stuff when Im not paying attention so I got the nice little achieve and started to read it, which actually distracted me and I about forgot to loot the boss when suddenly...... BOOM! I see 2 drops, 1 epic(the reins) and some blue. I was in a group so I had to roll on it, and luckily no one was in there with me because I rolled... a.... 5. Haha NOTE: This achievement does not lead to a 100% drop, that would be stupid as of now seeing you can one shot the mobs who drop the harpoons at lvl 90. But happy farming and best of luck to you all!

Some people thought that this mount had been taken out of the game, but after killing Skadi, and looting his damn iron belt hundreds of times (been over a year) I FINALLY got my blue proto-drake today. It's funny because I actually took about 2 months off from killing him because I was starting to think about just giving up on this mount. Today was my first day back after my hiatus. I started yelling when it dropped...my brother and boyfriend both think I've completely lost my mind to get excited over something like this. Haha! Good luck to everyone else still farming their blue proto-drake. I never want to see that damn dungeon again!

I can say this mount is still available from the same dungeon. I believe it's drop rate hasn't changed though so it still might be a challenge to get this if you haven't already. This dropped for me on my 5th run but I know several people who still haven't got it after several years.

I finally got the blue proto drake after many attempts. I can confirm that you can skip adds and bosses and there is still a chance that the mount can drop. I hope this helps good luck mount collectors!

The dungeon for this boss is very easy to solo at level 90, so if you have multiple level 90s, they can all do this run once per day (as only 1 character has to learn it for all the others + future ones to learn it too)

Was flying past Utgarde Pinnacle today, thought to myself, may as well give "The Incredible Hulk" a try.

After a couple goes I had my achiev and thought, well.... I'm here, may as well see if I can get the Blue Proto. So I carried on, killed Skadi, then looted and closed my eyes, hoping for that "reigns-of-something-you-just-totally-lucked-out-and-looted" sound effect ...

VOILÀ

I couldn't believe it. I'll admid I've tried this before, maybe twice... always at my leisure. So the moral of this story is don't let drops like this eat away at you; wanting something too bad will only bring frustration. On the other hand, it's worth remembering these things are out there just waiting for you. Give it a go if you've got extra time.

Finally dropped for me tonight.

Unsure how many runs ive done through this place, its certainly not a stratholme and ive mainly had fun doing it. It would be my first task everytime i logged in each day...(now what do i do?)

Ive 81 King Ym...what ever hes called kills, but i didnt always do the entire thing. In fact most times i didn't, so id estimate 200+?

I ran it on 2 toons for a long long time. I can recall it been a bit tricky in the distant past and occasionally dying at the hands of 'you-motherless-knaves-somthing-or-other-for-my-new-drake shouting Mr Skadi' .

As others have noted, its not a fruitless run through if you do it all, a bit of gold and some stuff to sell. I would always do everything up to skadi, however tonight i bypassed everything. No idea why!

I was kind of expecting it, for some reason. And there it was. But no fanfare, no achievement ringing out or anything like that, there it was, in the loot list, along with his blasted iron belt thing which i must have sold with all the other vendor trash loot more times than I've had hot dinners.....

Got this last night on my sixth or seventh dedicated run trying for this mount. Who knows how many times I've run this dungeon at level but I never set out just for this mount until now.

After all the time I've put in grinding for drop mounts, getting this so soon was a nice surprise.

I seriously started to think that this mount dropping from Skadi was a myth... It took me like 5 years and well over 1200 runs to see it drop for the first time. Today it finaly dropped and I'm so glad I never have to do that run again!

The first time I ran this dungeon it dropped and I won. Thinking it must be a pretty standard drop off the loot table or something (because who is seriously that lucky, right?) I took the offer of some dude in my group wanting to buy it for about 1k gold.

Years later I finally get it again after countless runs on multiple alts.

was farming this baby since i got my first 90 about 2 years now,
after having starting farming with 7 ,90's everyday now for months finally it dropped,
my kids had said they wished they had a web cam on me,
when i realized what the purple item that had drop was,
i shook,i cried,they said it was a 'youtube" moment...
my hubby laughed really hard,
thought i won the lotto or something i was that excited!
i was in shock that it actually dropped,
wasnt even sure if i was running the dungeon right cuz it had never dropped,never even seen it in groups

So like most people I've been soloing multiple instances for various bosses and have put together some statistical likelihood that I want to share with you all so that you can use this information as well to your own bidding.

So I'm farming these mounts on a day basis
蓝色始祖幼龙的缰绳 1.1% Chance to drop
乌鸦之神的缰绳 1.6% Chance to drop
装甲拉扎什迅猛龙 1.0% Chance to drop
迅捷祖利安黑豹 0.96% Chance to drop
琉璃石幼龙缰绳 0.77% Chance to drop
北风幼龙缰绳 0.8% Chance to drop

Now I want to look at the statistical likelyhood of NOT seeing any of the above drop, we use an inverted value for the above (1% turns to 99%, 1.5% to 98.5%). The calculation is as followed

0.989 x 0.984 x 0.99 x 0.9906 x 0.9923 x 0.992 = 93.94% Chance of none of the above mounts dropping. (6.06% chance of at least one mount dropping)

I improve this by running this 7 times a week = 0.9394^7 = 64.56% Chance of no mounts dropping
OR run this 21 times a week with 3 alts = 0.9394^21 = 26.91% Chance of no mounts (73.1% chance of at least 1 mount!)

Wednesday I also include 3 weekly mounts which include

炽热战马的缰绳 0.85% Chance to drop
奥妮克希亚座龙缰绳 1.13% Chance to drop

This day the chance for nothing is (daily mounts) 0.9394 x 0.9804 x 0.9915 x 0.9887 =90.28% chance of nothing dropping - or 9.72% chance of one or more mounts dropping :)

Just dropped for me. I must have ran it 40 or so times over the years...

Out of the blue while buying the mammoth mount from the exotic mount vender in dalaran I decided to head out there and have a go at it... It dropped. I was kind of in shock. I seen the purple but it did not register for a good couple seconds.

I am a casual player, just don't have time to raid. I've wanted an awesome mount for a while, but without raiding they are hard to come by. Make a long story short, I got this baby yesterday on my 30th Birthday! Was in shock seeing a purple icon upon looting!

I would say I am pretty lucky with only 25 total kills. Super awesome mount!

Ran for it at least two dozen times on my warrior, no drop.

Just got this after farming intermittently for about six months and wanted to share my logistics with you.
1. This dropped for me at 11:35 pm
2. Realm time was 2:35 am
3. It was Thursday
4. I skipped virtually every mob I could using
camouflage as a 90 hunter with my spider
Pet. I only aggro'd two mobs, one in the very
1st corridor (the second mob, I was able to
Get by the first & 3rd).
5. I skipped all bossed except SK Addi
6. I had gotten bored with the routine so I started
Making patterns with the harpoon launchers.
7. At a high enough level, it only takes 3 harpoons
to kill him.
8. Before it states that he is in range, I shot him
With the middle one. Stepped over and shot
Him with the one on the right, and as he started
flying again I ran over and hit him with the far
left one.
9. This was my 81st Skaddi kill.

So. Long story short, this instance needs to be on five player Heroic. As a 90 you can solo it. And you don't need to kill any other mobs or bosses to get it..HAPPY FARMING!

Aah, this guy. The fun we had...

At first, it was just "that annoying boss with the harpoons where some party member always messes up the timing". The one where pugs (my god, we still had hand-made pugs back then) would disband because someone still wouldn't move from the ice after 50 attempts. Oh, and he also dropped a mount, but it's not like you would ever see that one, let alone win it.

Then cata hit, we all hit lvl 85, boredom struck within the next few months, and it must have been early 2011 when I thought "you know what, let's pay good ol' Skadi a little visit". And so the journey began...

You know that feeling, when you start farming a mount, and you think: "this will be cake, 10 kills tops". You got your little cross set on the calendar, you're planning it in in your daily routine, the deal is done before you set your first foot in the dungeon. Oh, I was feeling it alright.

It must have been around attempt 20 that I thought "maybe I should put my hearthstone at Valgarde". Since I'm a mage, that wasn't really an issue. We port anywhere anyways, muha!

I vividly remember attempt 69. According to all the fancy calculations you see everywhere with the whole "if you killed it x many times you have an x * (<insert high-school statistics formula but I'm making this look like rocket-science>)% chance you see the mount drop. At that time, I was still looking at those numbers. An my god, I was at the 50% mark. Surely, it would drop now. Surely, I would not belong to "the other 50%". But I did.

At around attempt 150, I was on a first-name basis with the bosses in UP.
Svala, always up for some sucking up to the Lich King. "Oooh, look at me, I've been such a good girl, I beseech you for your blessing!" And he'd be like "lol, sure, lemme just point this beam at you" and then she'd be like "the sensation is beyond my imagining!". Pretty messed up, if you ask me. I just let them do their thing and walk on by.
Gortok never moved much. He would just stand there with his stuffed buddies. I have no idea what their deal was. If you're just going to stand there until a flying orbs comes to tickle you, maybe they shouldn't have given you those fancy blues to hold on to!

Skadi himself was never happy to see me. He'd just tease me with his mount (that he managed to farm apparently, thanks for rubbing it in) and call in his buddies. And the sorry lot this was! Still, they would get a hamstring in here and there, causing quite the annoyance.

Sometimes I would farm them every day for a few weeks, sometimes I would stay away for months. At times, I went in with 5 alts each day, trying to get this magnificent blue creature. Yet, the years went by. Deathwing was defeated, we discovered the mystical land of Pandaria, we conquered the power-hungry warchief of the horde, but the secrets of Skadi's mount were never uncovered. And Valgarde was my home.

It was a warm august night in 2014. I was about to call it and log for the day, when I thought, "I might as well go visit my old friends in UP". It was just a few days after the end of an "every day with multiple alts"-cycle. Svala was angry, Gortok was stoic and Skadi was arrogant. But this time, after he fell, a little message popped up. It was over...

In the end, it took 348 kills. By the math of the geniuses, I had around 97% chance that run that I would have seen the mount at least once. Then again, I was already in the 90% range since run 230...

I was extremely unlucky in this endeavor, but I never gave up hope...

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some boxes to pack and a heartstone to reconfigure. I'm moving out of Valgarde!

Well, after close to 8 months grinding this mount it finally dropped today. I would recommend running this on multiple toons and if you have an engineer invest in making a 虫洞发生器：诺森德. Anything to make your grinding easier :) Good luck everyone!

I wouldn't normally rant on a comment section for an item, but after returning to WOW after a two year gap, I ran this just because its where my wormhole dropped my pally out.

I'd been farming for this mount on my main hunter for months and months during wotlk and then during cata and I never saw it drop once.

I ran this dungeon tonight and it FINALLY DROPS.....on a toon that does not have the flying skill to learn it! >.<

I am so gutted- If I had the spare gold to learn the skill I would not have been farming low level dungeons in the first place!

If you're going to solo him as a hunter, don't make the same mistake I did. Make sure your pet's on passive. Mine ended up one-shotting him after I harpooned his proto-drake down, so no loot for me.

...with my luck, the mount would have dropped.

I got it on the first try. Patch 6.1.0! Very easy and mobs don't even agro. Skip to the last boss.. I am in disbelief that it dropped on the first try for me. Perhaps they increased the drop rate? Looks awesome and took me longer to fly (Horde) to Vengeance landing than to get the mount, lol.

Decided to try for this mount last night. Ran it, didn't drop. Wasn't expecting it to, with the drop rate at 1%-ish.
Ran it again tonight. Dropped him with three harpoons on his first pass. Got the achievement looted him and was shocked to see the reins there. Only two runs.

Can anyone confirm that it drops in Timewalking mode during the event? I personally doubt it: it is not listed as possible loot in Timewalking mode in Atlas and it would be strange to give such things via Personal loot, imho.

As of 6.2.2 this mount can be obtained as personal loot in the Heroic version of 乌特加德之巅 during a timewalking event.

The other day a player in my party was automatically assigned the blue proto-drake reins without any roll (gear drop was still being rolled for). Has the reins been adjusted as personal loot now? If so, then remember to loot Skadi yourself always.

hints:

You can run on the snow mound / hill on the left
you can skip first 2 bosses

Speed increase down the gauntlet so you can launch 2 harpoons (can launch right before it says he is in range)
Kill the mobs or avoid since they will hamstring you.
Speed increase to kill the harpooner that spawns so you can run back and launch it to bring the boss down before he casts breathe. You can bring the boss down before he makes one pass.

Proceed and kill the final boss so the gates open and exit the instance and park the toon for tomorrow.

dropped for me today. funny thing is that after i farmed while chicken from Magister's Terrace and Dino+Panther from ZG i decided to focus all my 100s to catch this drake. even if it takes a while to fly to that instance from Dalaran. And ive got in my 3rd attempt today (30th or 40th overall) with an alt which ran this one first time ever. Its true that yiu can skip 1st boss and dont activate 2nd. just run to your destination and pray :D

Been after this drake in Utgarde Keep for almost two months and almost doing it daily. No drop yet. I'm 100 and overly geared and wonder if that has anything to do with it. I'm going back to old content to get mounts and rep grinds. This has been the hardest one I've been after so far.

Finally got it, had 6 alts parked there and for over two weeks they got nothing but a bruised ego. So I thought I'd add another, my shammy, dropped first time for him. Now the other alts wont speak to him :/

I refuse to believe this mount exists. I have been farming this mount daily for 2 months now, with 12 (TWELVE) alts. And it still hasn't dropped.
To cope with this incredibly bad luck I've concluded that I must've done something incredibly upsetting to a Blizzard employee. There's no other explanation.

Just felt like mentioning that if you are farming this with a buddy for fun (I know it's easily soloed) be careful as the personal loot roll for the mount that was implemented for the Lich King timewalking is still in effect well after the timewalking ended.
My buddy got the mount while we were partied together on March 08, 2016 (months after the timewalking event) without rolling for it, and I didn't even know it dropped until I read it in the chat log. This occurred when the dungeon was set to group loot.
This mount is non-tradable when looted this way.

Farming mounts with a friend/significant other is great fun, but when it's a P-loot roll and they can get multiple of the same mount before you get one, it can be harsh.

I'm what one might call a Noob of WoW... or a WoW Virgin... I've only been playing for the last 6 months... and a quick note about it: I freaking love it!

I read about getting mounts from running instances/raids etc, so one day I decided to go give it a try... I've done Zul Gurub now around 47 times with absolute no luck at all... so I decided to head out to UP and try there...

I had no idea what I was doing as I've never seen this place before, so I cautiously killed everything in sight... it came Skadi's turn, and like the bosses before, I anhialated everything in view... including him. When I picked up the loot... I could not believe my eyes! I actually and finally looted my very first mount EVER! I nearly fell out of my seat and cried out with a big cheer!

This was about 3 months ago... I figured I had just found a mount that was a 90% drop rate... (see how Noob I am - I know, even I'm disgusted!). It wasn't until now that I realised how rare it is...

My love for this magnificent creature has only grown upon the discovery of his rarity.

I want this story to be an encouragement not a boast... I want people to believe that it is truly possible to obtain rare mounts on any run... wether its your 84th or your very 1st!

Finally got this beauty after 254 attempts, 9 characters every day.
After 2 weeks I was kinda disappointed but you know. Never give up and the feeling at the end is incredible!

This is my nemesis.

I've been farming this on and off since wotlk, but never seen it drop. Around 60 kills before rarity was installed, about 30 "uncounted" kills with rarity (apparently, when I loot Skadi too fast, it doesn't register), 142 attempts on account #1, and 136 attempts on account #2.

In total: 368 attempts and still no drake for me.

I'm now trying to brute force it with 42 characters with hearthstones in Valgarde, running this daily. And needless to say, questioning my sanity.

I did however "luck" out on one character today and one yesterday: I got timeless badges from the boss when soloing the hc (non-tw dungeon). Proceeded to kill King Ymiron and got badges and the 500 badge prism as well as tw-gear. Would rather have the drake tho....

Edit 2016/08/13: Currently at 365 attempts on acc#1 and 314 at acc#2, with the around 100 kills that is not counted I'm sitting at a total of 779 kills and no mount. Hopefully it will drop soon <3

Edit 2016/12/15: After a long Legionbreak from mountfarming, I decided it was time to start again. And on my 5th try the mount DROPPED! :D It took around 845 tries in total before it dropped.

It is my not so subtle suspicion that running straight from the entrance and causing Skadi's fight script to start playing, before Svala's intro speech completes, breaks Skadi and subsequent bosses, instantly despawning them.

4 characters everyday February to July 9. It finally dropped as i was starting to stockpile gold for the BMAH, just wanted to confirm you DO NOT have to kill the first bosses. Every time since day 1 I ran right to Skadi. Don't give up.

Confirmed drop as of 7.0.3. Got it after 224 runs total across 15 chars! Don't give up. The chance of getting it after 224 runs is (1-((1-0.011)^224)) = 91.5%
So approximately 1/10 has to do over 200 runs to get it.

I also had to do Molten Core 83 times to get the Eye of Sulfuras in order to create the hammer which is 5% drop chance. The chance of not getting it after 83 runs is around 1.5%. So I guess some people are just unlucky...

I even got both ZG mounts by 192 runs total (Raptor at 104, Panther at 192), but not this thing. I'm pretty sure it doesn't exist.

This finally dropped for me after more than 1200 runs. Let me give you the details:

- Level 100 Demon Hunter (female, night elf). I have about 26 toons that I hunt mounts with, and 8 of those are Demon Hunters, and I was concerned that maybe the mount wouldn't drop for a DH.

- Ran straight to the boss. Didn't kill Svala or do anything different from every other run I'd done previously.

To anybody who wants this mount and is willing to put in this stupid number of runs, I highly recommend re-evaluating your life's priorities! :D This stupid thing drove me damn near insane. If I never hear Skadi's voice again, it will be too soon.

Confirmed drop Nov 26, 2016, patch 7.1.

So, I've been farming this mount for months across 7 alts. In all, it took me 713 kills by my reckoning- I ran the entire dungeon every time, and kept track of my kills via the WoW armory's count of my kills of King Ymiron.

To those who come after me in farming for this mount: My experience tells me that Heroic Skadi the Ruthless' supposed drop rate of 1.5% for this mount is probably wrong, at least as of Legion- with that drop rate, I should have seen between 10 and 11 mounts on average over that many kills, and the chances of a 1.5% chance event failing to happen 700 times in a row is (1-0.015)^700 = 0.003%. I expect the true drop rate for this mount is 1% at best.

Good luck! It may take you hundreds of tries, but if you keep farming it, you will get it eventually, and probably in a lot fewer tries than I!

I'm pretty sure I'm done trying for this f'n thing. I hit 740 today and still nothing. I'm sick and tired of having to fly down to HF every time I want to use my alts for anything else, just to run through again, and strike out. I am basically farming all my mounts on a single character.
I recently hit 缰绳王 so i quite farmed a bit.
Currently i got 324 confirmed kills via ingame statistics (95%+ skadi only kills), so i did this over a pretty long period of time (at least 13-14 month).
Probably another 50-100+ kills on other characters back then in wotlk (hc runs on max lvl) + tw dungeons etc.
So you can say i went there everyday for one year + some extra chances here and there, no mount, not dropping for anyone else either (in TW dungeons for example).

To be fair: I did much harder grinds than this, but the average drop chances have always been accurate over all. Reading the other comments make me convinced the drop chance has changed at some point and is much lower than 1%. Just don't expect an fast and easy mount within 100 ID's

Farming this with my alts and I found a nice and easy farm tactic. If you are engineer use 虫洞发生器：诺森德 and press Howling Fjord. You get very close to the entrance.
If you want to speed things up, use 生拌熊肉糜 and you are done. Total time including heartstone back, 2 minutes :)

I just did my daily run for this mount and noticed that Skadi didn't even drop any gear, just gold. So I checked the loot table and the Reins have been removed! Is it time to just give up farming for this, I guess? Or am I missing something with this "Personal Loot" thing?

guise, guise! make sure you are on HEROIC!

I ran a LOT of times with no luck, and then came here and found I have to switch to Heroic. Didn't see any confirmed drops on normal. So I parked 2 alts at UP and ran 1x per day. Took me I think less than two weeks, so < 14 attempts + a few times took my main all the way over there. Went strait to Skadi on my 100 warr, killed some extras mobs + Svala on my SP. Pally dragged and killed pretty much the entire instance at once, just for fun and 20g, whatever.

What I wondered about though, because I've noticed the 1million+ dps sometimes bugs lower dungeons, LOTS of times Skadi had 0 loot. Almost never any loot for the i920+ Pally, maybe half the time for the i850 SP. I started using the lowest dps possible (dagger, ftw). Anyway the mount dropped for the 100 warrior, also using minimal dps.

So... heroic and low low dps worked for me. Like I said, a lot of lower level dungeons do have problems with high dps, maybe its an issue here, maybe not, but like I said, it dropped for my lowest lvl toon, at low dps, while the pally I don't think ever saw any loot at all.

After running this dungeon daily for as long as I can remember, I finally got it today. The weird thing is that usually I run past Svala Sorrowgrave and ignore her to kill the 2nd boss. But today for the first time I killed her, to get the Glory of the Hero achievement. And today it happened. It's probably just a coincidence, but maybe worth looking into.

You can skip the first two bosses (Svala Sorrowgrave and Gortok) and go straight to Skadi.
Make sure your instance is set to Heroic.

If you want to get out quickly without using any kind of teleport, head to the last boss after defeating Skadi. After killing him, he'll leave you opened gate which leads to the start of the dungeon.

I can confirm I have run this dungeon on 14 Characters for 15 Days at 210 attempts with no drop. This mount is one of the ones I have had the most trouble with to this point.

After 319 runs (farming on/off for years) it finally dropped. I can confirm that you can skip the first two bosses, I just run straight to Skadi. Don't give up, it will drop eventually. GL.

I guess there's nothing very new or groundbreaking to add here that hasn't already been said, but today she dropped for me after 102 attempts!~ Didn't kill either of the first two bosses before Skadi, and basically 2-shot him to death. I was expecting this to be quite a journey (like 300+ attempts) according to every else's comments here. Not a reason to give up, though! Just gotta keep a good routine of running the instance and it will eventually drop :) Hopefully (and very possibly) sooner than later. Good luck everyone :D

I checked these forums weekly to see if the mount was dropping for people because it honestly felt like it would never happen. I just wanted to confirm this mount dropped for me on Saturday. This by far was the mount I wanted the most in game. So starting on two max level characters and then after boosting two ran it on four characters. All of that adds up fast. Rarity* says I killed Skadi 167 times on my main and on my second before it reset and 93 times for the two boosted characters. From what I can remember of before Rarity reset I had killed him roughly 87 times on my main and second. That totals to roughly 694 kills with all of my characters and that's only rarity and there was a time before I had it, I never added those kills to the tracker. I know that seems like a lot but I never gave up because of people who commented here saying they got the mount. Thanks everyone who kept the dream alive.

So my suggestion for farming Skadi seriously is to have at least 2 max level characters running him every daily reset, defiantly skip the first two bosses and don't give up you may even get lucky and get the mount in under 77 tries.

*Rarity is a mount collecting tracker (also toys and pets) that lets you know which raid, dungeon and rare bosses you've defeated that drop mounts and has been updated for BfA it's super easy to use and tracks your kills. The only issue I had was I switched my warcraft folder and all of my data reset. It's nice to have some kind of tally of the work you've put in.

I just got it after 109 tries! So happy. Now I can park all my alts on Oracle dailies

Pro tip: Always bring something like the Skystep Potion, and I also recommend to use nitro boost if you got engineering. Another tip is if you bring an enchanter is to disenchant all the epics and then turn the abyss crystals into Infinite Dust which you can sell at the AH for that extra gold, also know that you can skip the first two bosses.

Extra Tip: Use Rarity to track your kills, if not for Rarity my drive would have been killed at like 30-40 runs.

Made an account on this site today to illustrate my own experiences farming this mount.

I've just gotten it today after hundreds of tries. Rarity says I got it at my 536th attempt, but my guess is I've killed him in total 700+ times. I have always skipped the first two bosses, so that still works. Never setting a foot in here again.

Got it after 553 attempts according to Rarity. But I know I had a couple dozen more before installing rarity. I never killed anything in the entire dungeon except for the pat on the stairs and the trash that I aggro'd during the Skadi fight. This is by far the most attempts Ive had to make at any mount so far but if you're up this high, just keep plugging along. It'll drop...

Got it yesterday after just about 10-15 runs! As others have said, you can skip all the other bosses and mobs and just run to Skadi and hope for the drop. :) Good luck!

Finally! After 256 runs with 4 different alts. I finally got it! The grind was rough, but totally worth it since I have been wanting this mount. I never want to see this place again lol. On to the next one now. Good luck to all trying to get this one!

Took me a while for it to drop, but today Blue Proto-Drake finally dropped for me! Took me 101 tries to get it, but it was totally WORTH IT!

To everyone still farming this mount, put on " Journey - Don't Stop Believin' " and well... don't stop believin' !

A possibly stupid question, but I'm desperate, so there it goes -

Those of you guys that've gotten the mount, did you kill all other PREVIOUS bosses, before killing Skadi? I usually skip directly to this boss, when farming the mount, 505 tries right now...

Edit: After posting this, I saw the comments below confirming you don't need to kill the other bosses for the mount to drop. I also got it the other day, after 516 tries. Never give up, mount collectors! Luck be with you!

After 10.5 long and agonizing years I achieved the Blue Proto-Drake on my Void Elf Monk.
(First 10 years casual, final 6 months hardcore across 7 characters)

Total Kills of Skadi the Ruthless spread across 7 characters: 309

1. Heroic Difficulty.

2. Besides the ancient 2008-2010 Wrath of the Lich King years where we actually did the dungeon to gear up, first boss was always skipped.

3. At first I skipped the trash and just tried to get to Skadi as quickly as possible, but then I realized a lot of gold can be made by picking up items, so I decided to loot most trash on the way.

4. Skadi the Ruthless would sometimes bug out if I had an entire instance of trash following me around, so before entering Skadi's room I'd hug the wall and kill the trash.

5. I am NEVER. EVER. Going back into this cursed place again. Svala Sorrowgrave along with her sensations and Arthas wanting to destroy their uninvited guests, can both suck my ridges.

Yeah it still drops, but I'm convinced that since this is no longer current the drop rate is something like 0.2%, not 1-2%.

Currently at 384 attempts. Running this everyday on 16 characters. I didn't realize the drop rate was so low until I read other comments on here and I was getting a bit annoyed at how many attempts I had without a drop. Then I saw people with 900+ attempts and it humbled me greatly. I will keep this updated as I go.

Edit: Attempt 438, still no drop. Gonna keep going.

Edit 2: No mount in sight. 545 attempts and going.

Got this little fella on my first attempt while doing the "Glory of the hero" achievement. Got mechagon on first try while doing the dungeon for the first time aswell. I feel kinda bad for being this lucky after reading the comments in here so I'll let you know I'm on 200 attempts on the north wind Drake which tbh is doable on normal difficulty so much easier. Keep going !

I been trying since Wotlk on and off.

It dropped back then and i gave it to a buddy of mine no realizing how bad the drop rate was. Since then i haven't been able to get it.

This month i had renewed interest, so i setup about 9 alts right by the dungeon and tried almost every day. So about after 100 runs, it dropped. (7/12/2020)

I skipped first boss and sometimes even skipped mobs.

The only thing i would say is that the time it dropped it took my time (still skipping the first boss but waiting for the dialogue to finish) Imo it has nothing to do with anything just making an observation.

I got him in around 1 month farming daily. It took me around 170 kills with multiple characters, rushing the dungeon all the way to Skadi, ignoring other bosses and trash mobs. Earlier tries were just random, when i was passing by etc., so I can imagine the drop somewhere around 200-250 kills.

Got the drake today. I'm not sure how many kills, but I would say less than 100 for sure. I have never farmed mounts and recently started playing the game again in May. I had an alt sitting outside Utgarde that was dedicated to this mount. Some weeks I would do it every day some weeks I was discouraged and didn't feel like doing it at all. Just keep grinding, eventually you will get it.

Hello guys, I will tell you my story. I have been activelly farming this mount in the last two or three months. (Actually I started like 2 years ago but nothing serious, going around once or twice per week, even once per month). This is one of the mounts with most comments all over wowhead... And I see why. I started farming with 2 characters, after that 3.... 5, and finally I started to make this dungeon DAILY non stop across 10 toons.

I skip everything, I just kill the pull going up in the stairs. I have tried so many things but I am still not worthy to ride this beautiful blue drake. I have tried killing Skadi with adds, without adds, clening everything, skipping everything and yet... This mount still runs away from me.

Rarity says 414 attempts. ObviousllyI have a little bit more than that, but I am getting stick to this number. Sometimes I feel like to give up but I am sure it will drop soon !

I will keep you updated and I hope this comment can give me some luck :) love u all out there mount farmers !

This beastie has been eluding me for years, I have every alt that high enough level to do H UP, parked outside, my kids make fun of me bc I can recite all the dialog in this cursed place, I swear I've spent more tine with Skadi than my own husband, I hope he doesn't get mad. Does this thing really even drop anymore? On my combined alts in over 500 attempts now, and thats just counting the times I killed King Ymiron as well, I know I skipped him many times. I really hate this place, but too stubborn to give up. Maybe one day I can finally put this place in my rearview mirror, but today is not that day.

I'm approaching 400 attempts across 16 characters. I've only been counting since April, when I returned from a hiatus, but this beautiful blue proto-drake continues to elude me... See other people's high kill counts makes me sad, but it helps me to know it's not just me. I will update with my progress.

Within 30 minutes of instance reset on 8/13/21 (Friday) I obtained my Blue Proto-Drake from Skadi.
Vulpera Hunter level 54 on Mok'Nathal
Sadly I can't really give an idea of how many runs it has taken me.
I just know I freaked out upon getting it. Don't lose hope, it'll drop one day!

Well, I suppose my time has come...

I have always been quite lucky with mount drops. My friends used to tell me often how lucky I am because most of the mounts took me under 100 attempts. I used to read these horror stories about 1000-1500 attempts for dungeon/raid mounts and I always felt glad to not be part of this "limbo club".

Well well, how the turntables...

I have done this dungeon on and off for 6 years, must’ve been about 100 attempts without rarity counter. I started heavily farming the drake about a month ago, 20-24 characters per day. I am currently at about 520 rarity counter attempts and I am terrified I will be one of those 1500+ people.

I am not writing this to complain, or to boost my luck, I just want this to be here so I can edit once it will actually drop. Quite curious myself. Good luck to everyone else in the meantime!

Edit 15 days after the comment: Finally! The mount finally dro... loool just kidding. 830 rarity attempts and still nothing. Sigh :/

Edit 23 days after the comment: I am about to run my rarity attempt number 1000. Add to that not using rarity for 5 years and the add-on not adding the attempts on other computers, and I may very well be above 1100 attempts at this point. Guess we are going for a world record here everyone! *dies*

Edit 24 days after the comment: Dropped after 1006 rarity attempts, but yeah in total it is about 1100 or so. I’m crying.

It's almost been 13 years. 300? 500? kills... I couldn't tell you the number of kills but I can tell you the years... in November it would have been 13 years. I came to this page just a few days ago to read through the comments and get re-inspired to keep going. Last night, it dropped. I think I felt more relief than when Invincible dropped, and lemme tell you that was a mighty long bit of farming too. Keep the faith y'all. Hang in there.

Today my addon reports this mount as 1/77 chance and i am sure it said 1/100 every week for months before.
Anyone else has can confirm if it's just rarity or the mount actually has a little increase in drop chance?
If true maybe more mounts got their chances increased?

1,375 attempts so far (if you exclude the Shadowlands pre-patch event rare version of Skadi kills). So if it's a 1/100 drop chance, I've just reached the rather dubious honor of being 1 in a million. Wouldn't some form of sliding scale of bad luck protection be nice Blizz...? :/

Been farming this for probably close to 1.5 years on two-three toons casually 2-4x a week (since it's an easy run as far as Wrath dungeons go). Ran it today on an alt I don't usually play on at all - aside from having used her to help farm for Onyxian drake - for sh*ts and giggles while doing my weekly ICC runs and what do you know...

Tidbit: You can skip the bosses before him and the harpoons don't have to hit in the same pass. I had him hit by two harpoons in the first pass by and even though I got the message that he was in range for the second, it didn't connect so I had to wait until the third pass-by.

Has anyone been able to drop this mount since Dragonflight ? Historically the drop rate has been between 1.5 & 1.7%, still is 1.7 on WOTLK Classic, however since the start of Dragonflight the drop rate on wowhead as Dropped by 0.6 points, it seems unlikely blizzard would nerf the droprate of 15 year old mount without annoucing it and without reasons whatsover. Purely circumstantial but i've got over 250 tries since the start of the expansion and no sign of it dropping, although bad luck is my mate.

I'm currently at just over 300 attempts. Both on Heroic and when it is a TW dungeon. Yeah I know, TW is supposed to be a lot lower chance.
This one is going to be the death of me, even Ashes of Alar dropped on like my 12th run when I didn't expect it to drop so early !
After this finally happens, I plan on doing the Invincible run with the Lich King himself a LOT more than I currently do.

400 kills and still nothing... Like most people with jobs, I can't run this place on 20 toons a day, so that 400 has taken me a few years w/ unsub hiatuses. Rarity says 99.46% of people have gotten it by now, hoping for that Wowhead luck. I'll probably call it quits at 500, because knowing my typical RNG experience if I don't stop there I'll still be going at 1000+

Oh, the slog!

I've been farming for this drake on and off for years across several expansions and multiple characters. Just recently put my mind to it to get back to mount collecting with this ACCURSED drake as the first stop of many across 10 different characters. I have seen the drops for 季鹍之嗣 and 铁蹄毁灭者 months before today. I knew this mount didn't have a particularly good drop rate but this is maddening.

Like I said - 10 characters! Everyday I have off each week so anywhere between 20-40 times a week depending on my days off work. This is what madness must truly feel like.

770 attempts at the time of this recording and no end in sight.

I came here for inspiration and hope that the Wowhead comment luck will bless me. Should I reach 1,000 I will return and log my toils.

Have faith on my clearly unworthy soul. Maybe one day, the blue will be mine.

Update: 815 attempts! As far as I'm concerned, the Wowhead luck is real.

Been going on and off for several weeks and a couple of years now with periods of running with 12 chars daily. invincible had eluded me for years with over 2,5k attempts. But this thing? It's maddening me.

Having around 1600/1700 attempts now, thinking the drop chance may have been deleted or something.

I did see it drop once during Wotlk, but yeah. Lucky me lost the roll.
