This item comes from pickpocketing monsters around level 50. There are other lock boxes as well for higher levels with better items inside, and require a higher skill level.
This is one of the main ways a rogue gets Lockpicking skill ups. These boxes come from various humanoid monsters when pick-pocketed, and have to be lockpicked to be opened. Not only does this give skill, but it also can give various things for rogues (poison ingredients, junk loot to sell for money, or even gems).

Pickable at skill 250. At 275 is yellow and 300 is green. Pick pocketed from 52-60 lvl mobs. Contains poisons reagents. Rarely any gems. Likely healing pots.

This is also the only way to get Ravenholdt rep at a certain point.
There's really nothing practical from having Ravenholdt rep past the rogue quests, however.

A good source of these are the Furbolgs at the northernmost Felwood. Lot better than trying to pickpocket these from the Hellfire orcs.

If you're doing alterac valley and your lockpicking skill is <300, go through the mines and pickpocket all the mobs there. There are tons of mobs in each mine and they all give a chance to drop a heavy junkbox. I did this and each run netted me about 3-4 boxes. Not much but it adds up! Make sure to kill the head miner to capture the mine for your side, too.

Reinforced steel lockbox is listed as a drop by
Swamp Talkers
, not Heavy Drop box, and the % is far less than 50. Also, there is ONLY ONE, the map makes it look like there are lots of them.

If you're looking to level up your lockpicking towards the end of 300, I found that not only the doors in BRD, but pickpocketing for boxes was a great and fast way to do so, in the 'audience' of the Ring of the Law (usually referred to as the arena) I could pick-pocket quickly and easily for between 2-5 Heavy Junkboxes per round.
Hope this helps. :)

The new achievement ("Insane in the Membrane") with title reward ("the Insane"), require you to get Ravenholdt faction to exalted, which past Honored is only possible with a repeatable quest

Another great place to make a good farming push for these is BRD. Note that this instance contains dogs that can and
WILL
see through stealth but if you can dodge around them farming: there are more than enough humanoids throughout the entire instance that can yield a good stash of these junkboxes if you're farming to sell for the upcomming achievement. I've gotten over 40 just wandering through and not even reaching the end of the instance!
The only bad catch here is that the nearest mailbox is probably Kargath for Horde anyway so I'd reccomend going with a
MOLL-E
or some very empty bags.
I sense rogues are going to finally make (more of) a killing off farming and selling these to players who wish to do that
'Insane In The Membrane'
achievement. 1400 junkboxes. Owch.

You cannot sell these items on the Auction House.
You can't sell lootable items on the Auction House so get ready to spam trade with WTS
Heavy Junkbox
, PST!
On a side note a good place to farm these is Lower Blackrock Spire off the Orcs. Keeps you free from opening doors and having to kill stuff to get anywhere, there really is heaps of NPCs around without any hassle. (No stealth seeing dogs etc.)
If anyone else has a better place they should be using the
WoWhead client
to send data in about where they get the boxes to help people out!
Have fun and good luck on your titles! ^_~

I have personaly started to farm these in UBRS, lower one to be more specific and i am now managing to get 90 of those in 45 minutes (with 70lvl rogue). I am uploading data to wowhead so people can see the drop rates cause i couldnt find any addon that is counting % of success from pickpocketing, but so far I am more satisfied then pickpocketing mobs in Eastern Plaguelands. Only problem is having largest bags at you, and going to UBRS every time after you take HS to mail the boxes you got but still if you dont have enough gold to buy largest bags this achievement isnt for you cause of from my calculations I will spend at least 25000 gold on darkmoon faire reputation :P (in best case). If anyone has some better advice where to farm these please say so. And can please some alliance rogue try to pickpocket Stonard Grunt in Swamp of Sorrows at horde base there cause there are too low numbers on wowhead uploaded. Maybe those mobs are best for farming these boxes if you are lucky to be on alliance side, cause i cant find better counterpart on horde side. If there are interested ones I can explain later whats the best path to take in there to maximise your gathering unless someone suggest some quicker method in gathering more then 2 boxes per minute.

I too have been doing LBRS as a lvl 71 rogue. I just start from the beginning, pick everything from start to Wyrmthalak. Then walk over to the bridge right before his room, drop one level to the Orges hanging out down there (near the pile) and then drop another level to the next Ogres. If you just normal walk off (don't jump) you can do it without taking falling damage. Then start from there and head back up. I'm not sure on the exact time it takes me, i know the other day i spent 3.5 hours to get 100 boxes (and that was one of my better runs : / )
I'm farming for four ppl, and I'm almost done with my second person. It takes me about two rounds to get 50, and for alliance the closest mailbox is Redridge (sorry horde not sure for ya'll).
I've offered as much as 2g a box to some friends on my server but yeah that's not enough to get them biting, and after doing this for two more (non humans to boot -_-) i most likely won't be offering to sell any.
my record for going the longest without getting a box was 57 picks btw.
New Record: 63 picks w/o a box.
New new record: 78 picks w/o a box. :D

I have been collecting these for about a week now. On my server someone has already offered me 9k gold for 1470 boxes but i reckon they will easily sell for 10g+ each once the patch goes live.
I've mainly been going to LBRS with my 80 rogue.I pickpocket bout 30mobs then pull them all and evasion/fan of knives them to death heh. Runecloth + other drops is adding up to about 200g per hour, with something like 30-40boxes also!
My glyph of pick pocket is finally getting some good use heh.

Here's a small guide I wrote to help Rogues with some farming of these lockboxes. Credit to
panicka
and
herrojima
for educating me on LBRS vs BRD in terms of droprate, mob level and humanoid population.
Note that this is a speed & efficiency guide for rogues level 65+ and omits trash selling of looted greys (like books), food, Vanilla WoW gems and health potions etc. I destroy those items from my bag since the boxes are what I'm after and additional items like these tend to slow you down. I use level 65 as a reference, since at that level; you shouldn't be caught too often or at all regardless. If you're still having problems with being caught often,
some
points
in
Subtlety
and/or some +Stealth gear should help you out immensely:
Get 18 or 20 slot bags. You're gonna need all the space you can get. 20 is preferred. Spend the $$ and upgrade your bags if you can-the money will come back to you by the time you've done a sale of a few boxes.
Empty them all. You're not going to be fighting anything in here. Killing a humanoid will yield less loot. If you're caught/pickpocket resisted/detected: Vanish.
Keep your Hearthstone and a stack of Health Pots in your bags. You shouldn't need anything else. If caught - Vanish.
For maximum efficiency
- set (Horde) Hearthstone to Kargath. Sorry Alliance, I don't know your FP's. :(
Turn on
Auto-loot
in Interface options. You'll be one-button target/tapping all the way around.
Make a
macro
to Sap/Pickpocket mobs and bind it to a hotkey.
Suggestion -
I use
'Q'
since I move with WSAD.
Start from the front of LBRS and pickpocket your way around. Don't worry about getting into UBRS or killing the various mobs to open the doors. We're going for speed + time VS profit here. Clear the UBRS entrance room and keep going around.
PP your way through the instance up to Wyrmthalak at the end. If you still have bag space by this time - log out while in the instance and log back in. All pockets will have reset, you're standing next to the end boss so it's a matter of reversing your direction now - PP your way
out
now and you should have full bags by the time you've reached the entrance again.
If bags are full: hearth out to your nearest FP, head to a vendor and start opening those boxes. Remember to turn
OFF
Auto-loot before you begin or you'll lose everything from your boxes when they're opened. Remember to leave
at least one item
in them. Glyph of Pick Pocket (-100% cast time in Patch 3.1) practically shines here by reducing the time needed to open each box. Various vendor trash calculation mods are helpful here to see what's the highest seller of what items are in them. Congrats on any greens/blue/epics you may get in a box or two!
Using the mailbox at your nearest FP: mail all the boxes in bulk to your alt/bank character/customer, get back on the flight and head back to Thorium Point to begin a fresh run. Pockets will have respawned by the time you get back so you should be ready to collect again.
Happy pickpocketing everyone and good luck on your
achievement
!

I've been farming for the Insane title, and after three bars into revered, I opened one of my heavy junkboxes and got a Shadowblade. :) I know its not near enough to make it worth farming them, but it was such a nice little surprise. Keep opening them while you farm. You might really get an epic out of it.
EDIT I've been farming at Tir's Hand by the way. Since I used to play Vanilla WoW a lot, just seemed like the best place to go.

Question, I see "Dropped by" tab list several creatures (some of which have a decent drop rate too).
I also see the "Pickpocketed from" list...do these actually drop from the creatures (i.e. could a non-rogue feasibly farm them?)
Only asking because I haven't seen many selling the boxes...and even if I was going to pay for them....5k-10k gold is a little steep for my price range +).
This is probably a dumb question...but never had a rogue, so not familiar at all with the differences between the two tabs (other then the implied idea that these boxes do in fact drop, instead of only coming from pick pocketing).

Well as this item is now in demand due to Insane in the Membrane, i am going to share with you the things i have learned when farming 1400 boxes for my guildmate.
First off i started the farming in Tyrs Hand, not a good idea as i had to kill them to reset and re pickpoket them. This was a big big problem as it cut down the ammount of time i was picking pockets and getting the lockboxes, this is without the fact that they are spread out so mutch and have to wait for respawns ect ect. i was lucky to get 20 in 2 hrs
So i moved to LBRS this is far far better you can get about 100 in just under 3 runs (about 1hr)on average ( if you pickpoket every single mob in the instance incluting the ones at the entrance to UBRS). Dont bother with UBRS you have to kill mobs to get in kill rend that takes time and it will jsut slow you down , the mobs that guard the runes are fine.
I use a macro so i do not have to loot each mob , this way i can walk up to each mob ( i used imp steath speed tallets mutalate speed boost ect as my second spec it saves a huge amount of time) and tab to select it and press a pickboxet button and it auto loots everything.
/script SetCVar("AutoLootDefault", 1)
/cast Pick Pocket
/in 1 /script SetCVar("AutoLootDefault", 0)
My path is a follows
Enternace room > UBRS rune area > second room with orcs before room with wooden bridges > room with wooden bridge > ogre area ( the none summon boss room) > troll area both floors > lower orc area with huts ect > next ogre area via spider room > next orc area > final boss room > reset
I hope this is of use to anyone who is going for The insane or who is helping out a guildy.
EDIT
A few people are talking about selling them well in return for the 1400 junkboxes and 5k gold i am getting a bike :)

I am currently in the middle of this grind (800 or so junkboxes left). I am using a level 62 rogue alt that I leveled solely for this purpose... heck, her name is "Junkboxing"!
I too started in EPL at Tyr's Hand. I don't think the above poster is correct in the "20 in 2 hours" thing. Making a loop around the area nets lets you completely clear it without killing any enemies and the ones at the beginning will have their pockets refilled when you get back to them. However, I did encounter the same downfall for this area: not enough spawns close together! The traveling time between groups really bites; also you may have competition if someone else is doing the same thing. You make around 50 junkboxes per hour here. The upside is that it is very close to LHC, so you have an easy hearth, mail, and trip back (5 minutes total for all of that).
So after doing this for a while I moved to LBRS. At 62 it's a little scary. However, I get 68 junkboxes in about 40 minutes here (all the free space in my bags). Sometimes it can vary. Usually it takes around 2 complete clears/resets to get this many. Sometimes it varies. On one very unlucky run I barely had 20 after a complete clear. On another I had 50 after a complete clear. So it can vary wildly.
My route is pretty easy. Pickpocket the enemies in the entrance room, including the three small rooms to the sides. Follow the patrol to the right of the entrance, go up the ramp and pickpocket the guys up there. Then go like you would normally go through the instance. When you get to the ogres, drop down to ground floor where all the orcs are. Pickpocket them, run past the spiders, and pickpocket the 8 ogres or so while continuing upstairs. Go all the way to the end of the instance (boss cannot be pickpocketed).
At the end, turn around and head back. Jump off the bridge back to where the 8 ogres are. Jump down again to where the Overlord ogre guy is. Pickpocket all of them, go back to the bridge and jump back to the ground floor. Sometimes the orcs down here have their pockets refilled, sometimes not. Either way, head to the troll area, pickpocket everything, head upstairs to the troll boss area, and then work your way back to the beginning of the entrance.
A full circuit takes around 20 minutes. Leave the instance, reset, and do it again! When my bags are full, I hearth to Lakeshire, mail, and fly back to Burning Steppes, then run to the instance. I don't have my epic mount on this character, so it takes me a little longer. But in 50 minutes or so I can fill all my bags, mail everything, and be back to a fresh instance. This means I average around 80 boxes an hour. Note that I do not have access to UBRS, which might be a good place as well with all the orcs at the start. At 62 I am hardly ever discovered; Sap takes care of scary places, and vanish works if something goes really wrong.
I still have a while to go, but this is the last rep for my Insane title on my main. Wish me luck!

I'm working on this grind right now for ravenholdt rep and have tried UBRS and Tyr's Hand and can say that Tyr's Hand is hands down the best place to pickpocket these boxes. Start at the entrance and do a large loop around the entire place, pickpocketing every single mob (go inside all of the buildings). Doesn't take long to fill up your bags. Then it's just a quick trip back to Light's Hope Chapel to mail the boxes to your alt for a quick return to the farming grounds.

i made a lvl 56 rogue for raven rep farm. i have farmed 4 hours in tyr's hand and the drop rate is around 60 boxes per hour +/- 5. The good thing in there is that you never have to wait! anything or kill anybody, just run around and pp, the mailbox is very close.so is vendors if ya want to sell something or repair. although the droprate seems kinda small, i wont go to lbrs or brd for 2 reasons - 1. wowhead droprates are far from perfect ( 2 out of 7 etc) .2. logistical problems: no mailbox, if you die you have to run very long time
good luck anyways
ps: I downloaded the wowhead client for this but dont know when they will update those numbers.I upload data twice a day. can anyone tell me how does it work excactly?

I did a test run and here is the results:
Time: 40 minutes
Heavy Junkboxes: 78
Money gained: 20g 15s 72c
I also got alot of
Superior Healing Potions
and
Exotic Cookbooks
, but I threw them out to make room for junkboxes.
The testing was done on an 80 rogue with

and
Camouflage
.
I also had

Set the first line to '5' if you dont have Glyph of Pick Pocket
Basically, have auto loot on and walk up to any mob and it will pickpocket it, if you spam this button while moving around a group of mobs it will pickpocket them all, very fast.
You might notice your chat log saying you've looted the same mob more then once, you really havent, it is just confused because you are changing targets so fast.
Just keep spamming the button, and it will pickpocket whichever mob youre closest to.
Have fun farming your heavy junkboxes!

Just for fun, I decided to see what the most valuable items in the junkboxes were so it was easy to tell what to leave in the junkboxes and what to loot. Using the loot data here on Wowhead, each box contains an average of 3.75s (Actual money contained appears to fluctuate between 1.5-6s).
Five of the items in the Heavy Junkbox loot table vendor for more than 3.75s on average, and therefore take priority over money:
Star Ruby
(Vendors for 50s each, averages 5g on Auction House),
Rogue's Diary
(45.62s),
Major Healing Potion
(10s, 50s on AH),
Shabby Knot
(2.25s each, 2-4 per drop), and
Humanoid Skull
(6.67s).
The remaining items all vendor for less than 3.75s on average, including the rogue poisons. Money should usually take priority over these.
As for the pickpocketing itself, everything you end up looting is worth less than the junkboxes themselves, with the possible exception of
Star Ruby
if you choose to auction it.
Superior Healing Potion
vendors for only 12.5s per stack and auctions for about 1g per stack, making it less valuable than the junkboxes. Pickpocketed food vendors for 40s per stack, and the other items vendor for even less. This assumes a value of roughly 1-4g per junkbox.
Your mileage may vary depending on auction prices on your server and the actual amount of money contained in an individual junkbox.

The percentages quoted here are all messed up, maybe because it doesn't record a "fail" unless there's some loot to go with the coins you pickpocket. LBRS junkbox rates are closer to 10%. But there's still a lot of pockets to pick, so it's still a good place to go.

Having just pulled 50 of these off BRD Mobs for Ravenholdt Rep, here are some numbers:
Total Wealth: 1g 20s 22c
Average per box: 3s 88.44c
Highest amount in one box: 5s 98c
Lowest amount in one box: 1s 52c
Boxes containing more than money: 22
(that is 1 extra every 2.27 boxes)
Box Contents-
Crippling Poison - 1
Deadly Poison IV - 5
Deadly Poison V - 1
Instant Poison IV - 3
Instant Poison V - 5
Mind Numbing Poison - 3
Star Ruby - 1
Wound Poison IV - 3
Wealth is for the boxes only and does not include what I grabbed directly from the pockets. I don't know how long it took to pull these as I rarely pay attention to time.

Did they change the drop rate for these somehow making it impossible to find even one? I might pay as much as 10-20g each but I'm not paying 100g for somerthing I need over 1300 of.

While farming Dire Maul north, i pickpocket every mob. Tho in a full run (pickpocketing and killing) every mob i get between 5-12 boxes. Takes bout 45min
I went to tyrs hand and pickpocketed (not killing) and got 20 boxes in like 8min.
So i guess the "droprate" in inaccurate, since farming Tyrs for theese seemes faster, if u just want lockboxes.

As a master of trickery and theft currently in employment for the second time in 2 weeks i'd like to add my 2 cents.
I find Hearthglen to be quite an easy and profitable place to farm said junkboxes. the first trip or 2 round usually results in less boxes than the later as you will need to weed out a few mobs that can see through stealth, for an 80 rogue its possible to sap and pickpocket them before disposing of them in the hope (quite regular) that a non stealth seeing mobs will spawn.
My route around leaves out the main castle building (garanteed stealth seeing mobs) and i find rather than waiting 30-45 secs for pockets to refill i ride down the hill picking as i go for extra boxes and no downtime.
The route take around 7-10mins per go and has an average yield of 14boxes per go.
Most boxes in 1 run has been 37
Least has been (sadly) 2
Generally its 1-2 from average (ofc)
I have (purposely) 84 free spaces in my bag which take between 40mins to 1.5 hours to fill.
While i can see this may not be the fastest way to get the boxes needed, it may prove useful to lower level rogues (easier to kill mobs if needed), and personally i found LBRS to be annoying to navigate and generally a pain to do.
When gathering boxes Engineering is awsome, i simply get my 84 boxes and mail to said employer using MOLL-E and log out on site as i rarely use my rogue for anything else.
Think about the number of spaces in your bag before you go. A tip would be to follow my lead.
84 boxes = 7 full mail loads (12 per mail) = (for me) 120g per COD payment = 840g per load.
I use these numbers to keep track of the number collected and the number needed to collect still.
I find my employers appreciate me knowing whats left, letting them work on other parts of the "insane" achievement without worry. Which has and will result in a Bonus payment upon completion in a timely manner.
I wish you all luck in your lockbox ventures and i hope this has helped in some way.

These can also be pick-pocketed from the Kobolds guarding the Coldtooth mine in Alterac Valley, (Lvl 60-69 bracket). There's a lot of them in close proximity, but usually facing the walls of the mines. There are usually only one at a time who are facing areas that a rogue would be stealthing through, so they can be easily sapped or distracted. I got about a dozen boxes in one run through the mine, along with assorted potions and gnome effigies. (Why does everyone hate gnomes so much?)
Watch out for the Geomancers, though. Their flame shield will break your stealth, and then you're usually looking at 4-6 kobolds turning away from mining walls to mine your face. It is not fun. If that happens, make sure to run AWAY from the Geomancer before vanishing.
Presumably, the faction-specific mobs can be pick-pocketed as well.
Of course, this means you're in a battleground and completely ignoring the BG objectives, so please don't do it in my group. ^_^

I recommend these
talents and glyphs
to anybody farming these. The remaining talents go wherever you feel like as does the 3rd major glyph since this spec is gimp for damage and is only useful for pickpocket farming.
This setup will give you the most bang for your buck.

I haven't played a high-level rogue (although once I finish farming my Shendralar rep I'm going to roll one and grind it to farm my own boxes) so I can't test this myself, but I'm curious. In the Darkmaster Gandling fight in Scholomance, everytime he teleports you, three
Risen Guardian
mobs spawn. According to the wowhead statistics, these mobs have a 33% rate of carrying junkboxes on pickpocket. When I fight Gandling, he teleports me regularly, which means frequent spawns of these junkbox-carrying mobs, so I was wondering if it would be a feasible way of farming junkboxes for Ravenholdt rep. I know that there would have to be some way to get back into stealth which is tricky in combat, so I don't know how feasible it is.
I'm also wondering if the drop rate really is 33%, because the mob statistics only show six pickpockets, hardly enough to have valid statistical analysis.
Any higher-level rogues want to answer my question on this being feasible?

i tried out LBRS and it worked amazingly. in two full clears, starting from begninning, going to wyrmthalak, then back to begining and same again. took about 30 mins and gained 40 boxes. if you keep getting that amount, you need about 40 full pickpocket clears, and less if you are human.

I have been buying these on my mage for the last few months in between farming the other reps. I plan to level up my (currently) lvl 33 rogue soon to do my own farming, but I've gotten just under 500 by using a simple trade macro asking people to CoD them to me at 5g a piece.
I'm doing this on Arygos, Alliance side, and am willing to bargain if you have some to sell but want a higher price.
Just some notes for fellow Insanity seekers, don't expect one rogue to farm these for you. The best case scenario is have multiple rogues getting them for you. Most of my suppliers have been rogues who are level 50-60 who just happen to pick them up as they level. My normal supplier sends me a dozen or so then moves on to the Outlands. Very occasionally, I find someone who was stockpiling them for one reason or another or who just wants to be helpful. I've had guildies pick up some for me here and there, but rarely do I get more than 50 from one particular person.
Generally, my macro results in people wanting to know why I want these items, so be prepared to answer questions. Remember, you never know what alts people have, so everyone is a potential supplier (you could also put an explanation into your macro, but I find I run out of room before everything is explained). A lot of people haven't even heard of this achievement, so people will want to know what you are up to.
I've had some whispers telling me I'm not paying enough, but I haven't found there to be much competition for these items on my server, and like I said, I will negotiate.
These items can be locked or unlocked, so rogues can use them to level lockpicking and then supply them to insane people like me.
Remember: there is no reason to hurry this. I suggest starting to advertise for these the moment you decide to go for the achievement. You aren't going to be able to raise the other factions over night, so you might as well go slow with Ravenholdt too. I started out getting about 100 a week. It's gone down lately. It's going to take time, but so is killing Booty Bay Bruisers, Pirates, turning in Librams, and Darkmoon Decks. Nothing in this achievement is easy. No reason Ravenholdt needs to happen over night.

TL;DR Version of Most of the Useful info in this comment section and the section of comments for "Junkboxes Needed" + some of my own insight.
1. Use this macro for quick Pick Pocketing (ty peeka)
/cleartarget
/targetenemy
/cast pick pocket
2. Use this macro to delete common humanoid loot other than junkboxes in Blackrock Spire (ty marshen)
/run f=string.find;for b=0,4 do for s=1,32 do n=GetContainerItemLink(b,s);if n and(f(n,"Homemade Cherry Pie")or f(n,"An Exotic Cookbook")or f(n,"Roasted Quail")or f(n,"Superior Healing Potion")) then PickupContainerItem(b,s);DeleteCursorItem();end;end;end
3. If you have a Rogue 60+, it is a Good idea to spec it Subtlety to pick up talents like Master of Deception, Dirty Tricks, Camouflage, Preparation, and Shadowstep. Used together they help yield very quick Pick Pocketing
4. Helpful Glyphs are Pick Pocket and Pick Lock
5. The Best zone to Farm these is in Blackrock Spire with a level 60+ Rogue (Dungeon between Searing Gorge and the Burning Steppes)
6. You can unlock these and still pilfer Some of the loot Some of the time without them disappearing. To do this the easiest way, Disable Auto Loot in your Interface > Controls section. Typically cold hard silver is the best you will get but once in a while something of value is in there. Do Not Loot the silver if it is the only thing in there! Make sure to leave at least one item/coin set in there.
7. These are used in a quest to grind Ravenholdt faction. That faction is tied to a Feat of Strength title and often lazy/rich players will buy these between 1-10 gold a piece. If you find someone willing to pony up 10 gold a piece and if you loot ~70 an hour, you can make 700 gold an hour which beats the heck out of most gold farming and you don't even need an 80. THESE CANNOT BE SOLD ON THE AUCTION HOUSE. So if you want to stockpile to sell them, your best bet is mailing them to an alt for temp Mail Storage (30 days) or to fill that alt's bags/guild bank.
8. I myself only have a neglected Rogue alt so I did not know the finer points of speed pick pocketing. Here are some tips. When using the targeting/PP macro, make sure your character is looking in the direction of your target you want to pick pocket. Even if there is a target much closer, if there is a target in your direct direction you will probably target that instead. If you are coordinated enough and the set of mobs allows, you can Strafe by them without ever stopping or slowing down. Also, Pick Pocketing does not trigger the Global Cool Down. Sapping does. If you want/feel the need to Sap, go ahead and sap first and immediately pick pocket, you won't be penalized.
9. Vanish is your friend. An aggro'd mob = time wasted and if you haven't Pick Pocketed them yet, a potential lockbox down the drain.

My rogue is now farming these for my main (a mage) and I've had mixed success. Sometimes I'll clear go through the Felwood Furbolg camp and come out with 20 boxes, sometimes 2. Depend on the night, I guess.
My original intent was to buy all the boxes, but I'm too impatient for that, and even though they are coming in slowly, I want to be done with the rep once and for all.
My secondary intent was to level the rogue to at least 60 before starting so that I could run around Scholomance and Blackrock Depths with some degree of impunity. Again, my impatience over took me and I started farming these to some degree as soon as the mobs became yellow (and I try when they are orange, often needing to vanish afterwards). That said, I thought it might be helpful to talk about areas where one can continue to level while farming because running around BRD on a level 52 just hoping no one sees you simply sucks but so does waiting level upon level while farming mobs that don't even drop what you want for XP.
Felwood, Winterspring, Blasted Lands.
Most notably the Timbermaw hold rep quest lines and the demon killing rep lines in Felwood, the Furbolg killing quest lines in Winterspring, and the Fallen Hero of the Horde quest lines in the Blasted Lands. You can pickpocket then kill. The respawn rate on most of the mobs is about the same as the reset rates on the pickpockableness of the mobs, so you might as well just kill after you've cleared the room nasty Baggins style. It's always good to know what the mobs have in their pocketsssssssssssss.
Oh, and if you pick up a level or two, pretty much every undead in Andorhal and beneath Stratholme drops these too, at a very good rate.

Starting at level 51, I began queuing for AV in between to help break up the monotony of levelling to pick these boxes. I got the idea to go in a cave and do a circuit around - guess what, the troggs and snivels crew yield about 8-15 and by then they are respawned to do again. Depending on how good your AV group is, you might get a few passes in here as long as no one flips the mine. In addition, you get rep, experience, and honor while you are farming these babies.
I only started LBRS today and have over 300 from doing AV from 51-60. I plan to do it again to break up LBRS a bit and give me a free hearth to a graveyard and place to sell off junk.
UPDATE: Still yield these boxes in the 61-70 bracket

For those of you leveling a rogue explicitly for junkbox farming: I just found a really amazing way to get easy junkboxes while you are leveling. It does require you to have points in subtlety for increased stealth as well as the pickpocket glyph to make it easy (having maxed lockpicking for your level helps too), but while you are leveling in your early 50s use LFG to get into BRD Prison.
After everyone clears the boss and leaves, go back and pop the locks to the highway and garrison and go to town! Be extremely mindful of the dogs and elementals, of course, but at level it’s still a breeze. Ring of Law is amazing for boxes. When you’ve run out of pockets to pick, simply kill yourself and run back, they’ll reset by the time you do.
But the most important part of this is you have to use the LFG tool. Because you can
TELEPORT OUT OF THE INSTANCE AND RIGHT BACK
for extremely easy access to a mailbox and instantly resume farming!
I did this tonight for about half an hour to an hour and got about 40 junkboxes that way on my level 51 rogue. I was originally planning on getting her above 60 before considering farming dungeons like BRD or LBRS, but having LFG has made me change my mind and I can start getting junkboxes sooner than I had originally planned. Something to keep in mind if you’re still leveling!
I intend to milk this for as long as I can. ;P It definitely saves me a ton of time leveling, not to mention time spent getting there and back once I got my rogue over 60.

I farmed half the boxes to get exalted (10999/21000) in Tyr's hands during 3.3.3 and have been noticing that now after 3.3.5 the drop rate is really low, not sure if it is just impression but it have been taking 3 to 5 times to fill my 90 empty slots, tried BRD and LBRS also, same deal.

Im currently doing the insane on my warrior and since i don't know any rogues that would farm these for me and well, Im not going to pay 10,000g for something i can EASILY farm for it will just take ages, i farmed them all myself, by hand.
But i currently have 220 junkboxes left to pick.... And i swear that all you people using the WoWclient are just REALLY lucky...
WoWhead claims this to be a 60-75% droprate off the mobs you pickpocket in LBRS (Firebrand, Spirestone, Scarshield and Smolderthorn)... But this is utter BS...
I experianced far closer to a 10-30% droprate...
Basically I didn't kill a single mob or open up any doors... I'd head towards the Leeeroy room but not open the door to get into it and then backtrack down past Scarshield, Smolderthorn and Firebrand and then run back to the start and go again..
A normal run would see me pickpocket roughly 300 mobs. Out of this EVEN if i WAS LUCKY i would obtain only 30-40 junkboxes (And when not lucky only 20-30)
To pickpocket a Full inventory of these (96) on my rogue i'd have to run at least 3-4 times through LBRS pickpocketing at least 800+ mobs.
So don't get your hopes up like i did who thought at a 60-75% drop rate this would be fairly easy to farm.... It's no where NEAR that high... Prepare for a long farm and I hope you can persist through it for it is a money saver or the only option if your server doesn't put junkboxes on the AH...

Just putting this on as another option, although i have never got more than 20/hr the mobs at the undercroft in EPL are 1 shot kills for 80 rogue, and if you kill after pickpocketing they spawn fast enough that you never stop PP/kill/looting them. Also they drop runecloth which is good if you are going for home city rep.

Also worth to mention the amount of An Exotic Cookbook (
怪异食谱
) You get while farming these. Quite Hilarious really. Right now I have 40 Lockboxes and 53 of the Cookbooks. The recipe goes like this:
How To Serve Man
<Right Click To Read>
1. Get one or eight man
2. Hit man hard
3. Hit man more
4. Put man in fire
5. Eat man
Just Hilarious.

These are my primary source of income.
I send my rogue to gather up 5 bags full of them about once or twice a day.
On my server, I have absolutly no problem finding buyers at 10g a box.
I sell hundreds of boxes a day at this 10g each price. Doing some math here... My rogue has 90 bag-slots free in a run. I fill the bags, and sell 90 lockboxes through CoD mail to a list of people who are buying them.
If i run two runs a day, totaling me about an 60-90 minutes a run........
3 Hours gets me 180 boxes........ 180 boxes
X
10g
=
1800 Gold
Every 3 hours.
Thats how you get a few hundred thousand gold :P Given you can find buyers on your server... but I've had no problem finding people. I find at least one or two new people a week who are motivated to do the achievement (Because they are bored waiting for cataclysm to come out.... NOW IS THE TIME TO DO THIS... their value will bottom out when cata hits).

For me the best place to pickpocket them was LBRS. There are alot of human mobs in groups and if you reach the end of the instance you just can jump down to the ogre's level again and start pickpocketing again, because their "pockets" will respawn. I got around 80 boxes in 1 1/2 hours. The good thing is that you don't need to reset the instance and you don't get annoyed from players of the other faction, and LBRS is very close to Ironforge. The bad thing is that there is no mailbox near LBRS (neither at Thorium Point nor at Morgan's Vigil).

If your planning on doing your own Pick-Pocket for Ravenholdt.
I highly recommend LBRS. Before I started, I did about 2 hours on pick-pocket in Tyr's Hand and from my experiences, despite others recommendation. Tyr's Hand was horrible.
Pick-pocketing in Tyr's Hand.
- After 2 hours I was only able to acquire 60 or so Junkbox.
- Because Tyr's Hand is one big open field with mobs scattered all over, It was hard to keep track of the mobs that I had already pick-pocketed, as I constantly got the message that the mobs has already been picked-pocket.
- To add to that frustration of keeping track, there were constantly level 55s players running around killing them as well as newly made DK's (atleast on my realm anyways).
Too add, I also have a rogue friend who (on another realm) pick pocket junkbox, and he too, has the same issues I experience with Tyr's Hand.
The only benefit of farming in Tyr's Hand is the convenient of the mailbox and vendor located at Light's Hope Chapel.
In LBRS however. Things were fantastic.
- LBRS is very linear so it's very easy to navigate, as well making it very easy to keep track.
- A complete circuit run through from the entrance to the last boss (Wyrmthalakk ?) AND back around to the entrance, took on average 15-20 minutes.
- Each run through of the instance gave me anywhere from 30-40 junkboxes.
- Having all 20 slot bags, and only my Hearthstone from the start (95 free slots), I was consistently able to fill it all with junkboxs, in 2 and half run-through.
- So I was able to 95 boxes on an average of 45 minutes.
- Even without the convenient of a nearby mailbox or vendor, the down-time of hearthing, flying and running back only set me back at most 5 minutes. (for Alliance anyways, not sure about horde).
So yes. I highly recommend farming LBRS, also the macro's provided by "tosbanzai" was a lifesaver.
Also if you are leveling a rogue for the sole-purpose of farming junkbox. I really recommend getting it to 65 (Very easy with AV queues). I farmed LBRS with my rogue alt at level 55 and while you can do it at 55, it was alot slower as I had to be very cautious about maneuvering around groups of mobs.
Good Luck! and happy farming =D.

I'm very reluctant to give out my (the best) method of doing this, but why not:
Ok,
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-talents.xml?r=Shandris&cn=Zerth&group=1
Use that spec, and the glyph of pickpocket, and glyph of sprint.
Use the macro:
#showtooltip Pick Pocket
/console targetNearestDistance 8,000000
/targetenemy
/cast Pick Pocket
/cleartarget
Bind this to your scroll wheel, up and down.
Enter LBRS, go up the ramp, take the 2nd ramp on the right , turn right, drop down, go left down the smaller ramp, and through a dark section with a pat, you should now see the big main area, with ogres on the other side of a ledge, stealth and walk towards the nearest pack of mobs, spamming scroll up and down, youll pick them all, continue forward through the instance till you get to some ogres on the left, with a ramp near them around the corner, skip the ogres and go down the ramp into the troll section, pickpocket everything and keep moving forward to the spider section, go past that till you see more ogres, pick them, go around the corner past the scorpion things, in the next section dodge the pat, picking everything on your way, and go right and into another section, pick everything in that, and head onto the bridge heading to the final bosses room, pick the bosses room, then run out, drop down onto the ogres section where you turned the corner before the scorpions, then (here comes the part that makes this route really good) target the first mob you picked across the ravine, with the lava at the bottom, and sprint jump towards him and spam shadow step, youll teleport across the ravine, then vanish, and repeat route(their pockets will have respawned by now, so you don't need to reset).
This is the fastest method, will give about 100 box's per 50 minutes if you do it right.
Also use the addon lootfilter to set it up so anything you loot other then junkboxs is deleted.

I've been using this macro to speed up my junkbox collecting:
/cleartarget
/cast Pick Pocket
/script SetRaidTargetIcon("mouseover",1)
I have it bound to a key, I can move past a group of mobs and mouseover and pick pocket each of them every 1/3 second without interruption. The '/cleartarget' ensures any 'Your target has already had its pockets picked' errors are not due to bad targetting, and setting a star on each target lets you know you got each one you aimed at.
It is about 10 times faster for me than having to target each mob and then pick pocket, because after looting it auto retargets the previous mob, using this mouseover that retarget is irrelevant and doesn't slow you down.

The ring of law is a HORRENDOUS place to attain Heavy Junkboxes.... 1-2 if I am lucky for a round of pick-pocketing all the spectators. The other aggressive mobs in BRD are also useless if one's aim is to farm Heavy Junkboxes....
LBRS is your best shot. And even the droprate in LBRS has been lowered greatly.

I was just questing in the Blasted Lands on my 60 rogue, and noticed I was picking boxes from the demons and naga in the zone even though they're non-elites. I'll have to figure out how to upload such information to wowhead, but I suspect it may be worth it for people to widen their range of targets in 50-60 zones to see what new mobs are now carrying these since the shattering.

I've been levelling a rogue, specifically to farm box's for my Druid main.
I'm now level 58 and while questing the last 2 levels to get to Outlands I was in the Blasted lands doing Nethergarde mines quests. I didn't record it, but the drop rate was excellent from the Nethergarde miners/engineers/foreman.
Due to it's size, if you start at the entrance and work your way through, then take a boring walk back, their pockets will have refreshed.
I'm going to level up a fair bit then come back with my meters and timers running.
Will do my best to remember to bring back my data.

After reading a few comments about the Blasted Lands I decided to hit up the Nethergarde Mine for my last few hundred junkboxes post-Cataclysm. All 55-56 mobs, non-elite, but only an option for Horde I believe.
I did this on a level 55 (Horde) subtlety rogue for the stealthed movement speed bonus, and found that once I got my groove going it took
about nine minutes
for an optimized clear of the mine, then one more minute to run up the wooden ramp back to the beginning, by which times the mobs can all be pickpocketed again.
I go in the Northern entrance, up the little incline where the named dwarf is, and from there clear straight down to the big center room, only skipping mobs if they're too far out of the way (like most of the terrified miners, which I just sprint past).
Over the 12 clears I counted, I was averaging about 1.489 lockpockes per minute in Nethergarde Mine.
They ONLY drop Heavy Junkboxes -- no other type.
The miners also enjoy a lot of pie, cheese, and fried plantain.
Good option with only a minute of downtime, a very low threat of death, and a very close (Stonard) inn/mailbox combo. Especially if you're a little lower level and instance farming isn't as easy to do effectively.

I started working on Ravenholdt rep this evening. With Durnholde keep gone and Stromgarde your only real option(it sucks btw), I thought i might give looting boxes a try. After a few hours, I found I averaged 54 boxes per hour(LBRS). With my lvl 14 guild and 10% buff(horde so no human factors here), I'm getting 82 rep per turn in.
Let's say you wait Stromguarde out..and you get to revered that way(I averaged almost 2k rep per hour there, figure in 18k rep, give or take some breaks...about 6 hours)..only 21k rep to go.
These boxes are your only ticket up now. With about 50 per hour from a full LBRS clear, you're going to get 820 rep with your guild perk as a horde. That comes out to ~26hrs.
Total you're looking at about 32hrs to hit exalted.
For a casual like me who can only afford 2hrs a day while still getting some from the wife on ocassion...it's gonna be a long grind. Guildies, arena partners, etc come into play and it looks like 30m to an hour a day and this may just be the hardest rep to farm for the Insane.
On the bright side of all this...I'm still going to be getting some on ocassion.

I have found a new spot! (Horde Only) I hate farming, and the mob reduced LBRS was boring. Plus, I came away with so few boxes for all that walking around. I tried the Nethergarde mine, and found it pretty good.
BUT... while flying across Swamp of Sorrows, I spotted the new alliance base on the north end of the Pool of Tears, and inside the walls was a formation of 36 allies. There are 5 columns of six foot soldiers with 3 cavalry on each side. I could stand in front of the front centre alli and loot 3/4, then finish off the last 1/4 standing at the back. I then hid behind a building, and changed toons, did a daily or crafted something, and returned to my rogue to pick pockets once again.
I get 3-7 boxes per loot in 2 minutes and can do it every 10 minutes (it seems, although this may differ. I need to test this more). I fill my bags before going to stonard to mail them to my nearly insane main.
No more falling asleep at the kbd and walking into lava!
Tips for young players:
Remember to hide before logging because when you log in, you will not be stealthed.
Combine this with the mine or Nethergarde keep when you tire of walking around like Mr. Cellophane.

The Blackrock Stronghold in Burning Steppes seems to be a nice place to park a rogue for occasional farming.
It's quite a small area, but there are 4 groups of 25 mobs, along with roaming units, around 120 mobs all up, levels 50-51.
I get 10-20 boxes from this area, takes around 200 seconds to clear it.

I just got my achievement today. I do have to say that LBRS does remain as the best place to farm boxes. Yeah the drop rate isnt as high as wowhead says, but you have to factor in the important fact that you have zero competition in instances. For alliance, LBRS is now ridiculously easy to get to as well, if you have a flying mount. Just mount up, and fly east over the mountain range from SW keep. You're practically right at blackrock mountain. Also, if you somehow manage to die in LBRS, the spirit healer is right outside the instance. I got anywhere between 15-30 boxes per run, and each run took me 20-30 minutes to complete. Also, as stated above, you can jump down the bridge into Wyrmthalak's room and land on the ogre bridge, and their pockets will have respawned by that point.

Yes you can. That is what I am doing now but just remember that to turn them in, you cannot loot the contents of the boxes or they will not be counted towards rep. Just pickpocket them on your rogue and leave them locked and send to your main to turn them in. Good Luck.

I found a very nice place to farm these, close to a vendor, and with fast respawning mobs.
You will need to have at least a neutral reputation with Gadgetzan to get there.
Off the
Swamp of Sorrows
coast, there's a ship called Fortune's Fist filled with goblins. To get there, go to Sorrowmurk and talk to
Lil' Crazy Jerry
just outside the town. He's next to a few cannons, look carefully because he really is little. He'll shoot you to the ship with his cannon.
At the ship, you'll find three floors with four goblins on each floor. There's just enough space between them so you don't aggro two at the same time. They respawn very fast, by the time you've killed the last goblin on the bottom floor, the top floor guys will be back. If you're around the level of the mobs (53-ish), you probably won't even have to change floors.
If your bags are full or you want to take a break, just use the cannon on the top floor to be sent back to the goblin town.

As of 4.1 the best plave I've found is Blackrock Spire. My 85 Sub rogue with Quickening + Nightstalker + Glyph of Pick Pocket + Glyph of Sprint, using Shadow Step at every occasion I find, I get exactly 85 lockboxes in no longer than 1 hour, usually less. I've used poisons to time this... Too lazy to use the stopwatch.
For paths, do the first room, the first area in UBRS, then every single pick pocketable mob in LBRS, going to Wyrmthalak, go out of his room onto the bridge and (with safe fall + safe fall glyph) jump on to bridge below with the ogres on it, these mobs should be reset by the time you get there. (if you start getting good at the path, you can actually do it so fast that these haven't all respawned.) If they haven't respawned go to the Orcs out in front of the ogres, clear your way back to the start and do the room in UBRS again, then go back to LBRS and jump down to the Orcs in red at the very bottom. PP your way back up through the trolls (Ogres too if the pockets hadn't reset last time) then jump down again to the very bottom and PP your way back to Wyrmthalak. Very little wasted time here, I have not found a better way than this. I've experimented with Shadow Stepping from the bridge outside Wyrmthalak back to the start of LBRS(very hard jump to make) When it worked, it still wasn't as good. However, it was pretty easy to fall short and into the lava.
Working on my last 500 boxes now, then it's just 78 more epic Darkmoon decks, and about 80 hours of solo bloodsail rep farming (0/36000, I hadn't planned on doing Insane, but here I am.) I'll be working in some of my thoughts and observations on that rep when I get there. As far as I can tell it's 1,000rep/hr in Arathi highlands, but you can't just zone out and afk unfortunately. I'll be trying the grouping and killing BB guards strat too, but I doubt that is much better.
Good luck on your Rep farming! It really isn't as bad as people seem to think. I did Raveholdt from neutral to 10.5/21000 revered in less than 24 hours.

After 4.0, the best place I've found to farm these is the Blackrock Stronghold in Burning Steppes. There are four packs of 25 mobs in 5x5 squares.
http://i.imgur.com/9MD9r.jpg
First you pickpocket the Sergeant that walks around the pack. I don't recommend sapping him, because when it wears off he'll ignore his normal route and walk though the pack to get to his spawn point, sometimes walking right through you.
Next, loop around the back slightly ahead of the Sergeant and pickpocket the outer 16 mobs, once done, sap the innermost mob and walk into the pack and stand inside it. You can then pickpocket the inner 9 mobs. Run away and repeat for the next pack.
I find that it takes just over a minute for each pack, then a few seconds to walk to the next while also pickpocketing the loose mobs that walk about. By the time I've finished them all, the first ones did have had their pockets respawn. Each complete circuit nets somewhere between 15 to 20 junkboxes.

I find the macro:

/cast Pick Pocket
alot easier to use, since you just gotta spam without having to use mouse.

hope this information helps:
im starting to do this part in the achievement for the insane title. I have tried a few areas, BRD and Blackrock Spire. They were ok, but I didnt like the drop rates, so I tried Silithus. there are 4-5 areas of humanoids here. I liked the drop rates, but obviously you have to fly to each for a few seconds. so maybe you guys like the quicker loops in the instances better.
also if your main is not a rogue, and your alt is a rogue but of the opposite faction, the trading of the junkboxes through the auction will not work. first of all you cant auction the boxes and buy them on another alt(it has to be through a character on another account), and second the boxes cant even be put in auction. so make a rogue alt of the same faction.
uh what else. the boxes do not stack in your bags, so make sure you have empty bags when you start the farming, get that glyph of pickpocketing, and subtelty is good, because you can jump to another npc quick with shadowstep

Farmed 500 in nethergarde mines, that gave me 82 avg each h.
So that's 1360 rep each h with 10 % guild perk and 1200 without.
Been farming in lbrs and other places as well but i prefer nethergarde mines.

Anyone else got an updated going price for these? I just sold about 200 at 35g each, in the mean time there is a guy horde side trying to find someone to do it for 40g each. That seems about right considering the farming nerf and the huge gold inflation since the start of cata.

LBRS will give you 17-25 junkboxes per full run. lets say you need 1200 junkboxes. so you have to do 60 (+5,-5) full run. again, lets say you can do full run in 15 minutes (its optimal time i think). then it is a 15 hours farming. don't be scared, it's one of the easy parts of insane...

For anyone manually pick pocketing the junkboxes themselves (and I was against this for the longest time, but employing a rogue to do my bidding turned out to be too hard in the end) I found the following macro posted by

I'm sorry, but the whole "Insane" became a joke. It's just easy now and doesn't take a lot of time.
1) Started with Bloodsails - killed over and over 1 mob (Faldir's Cove, near the ship).
2) Then Goblins fractions - again 1 mob in a hut (Fray Island), then kill other mobs (use banner).
3) Darkmoon Faire - over 10k rep per month it's so easy now to get. You can turn cards as well.
4) Ravenholdt - that's the last I need actually. You can buy boxes or... Here are some simple tips:
- use glyph for pick pocketing (and opening boxes if you willing to check them)
- talents for faster moving while in Vanish (Nightstalker) are nice
- Minor Speed enchant for boots also helps a bit
- use "/targetenemy /cast pick pocket" (I have it assignet to a mouse wheel)
- I'm using LBRS, after clearing it I'm making a tea and waiting a bit for loot to respawn
- when bags are full I use heartstone to Iron Summit (Alliance) and send boxes (after checking)
- main has mailbox + "pet" with a mail; received knives are disenchanted and mats go on AH

I've tried a few areas to grind boxes and found Lower Blackrock Spire to be by far the best. The Ring of Law in BRD was alright but sometimes the drops sucked and found myself waiting around for respwans....
You will need sub spec, empty bags, an empty bank if u have a personal banker (this helps so you dont need to keep leaving to hand in and coming back) and how I did it was like so..
Enter Blackrock Spire and in the 1st room use the first door on the right which takes you into the Lower Blackrock Spire section. Go left through a corridor and enter Hordemar City, you will see some mobs in front of you and a pack of Ogres on the other side of the canyon to your right. Start your way through the instance pick pocketing everything as you go. Go across both bridges till you get to a door with 2 Ogres guarding it. Pick pocket them but dont go in the room, go past them and down a slope to the side which leads you into the Troll section.
Pick pocket this entire room before making your way down another slope into the lower rooms. Again pick pocket everything in here including side room before taking the door in the top corner which will lead you out and towards the Spider section (try not to get caught out by the trolls that move about in the middle of the room). Between the Troll and Spider section is another load of Orc Mobs stood around little camp fires etc, pick pocket all these. Once you get to the spiders ramp ignore them and stealth through them (or kill them if you wanna just get them out the way.) If you havent got the pet from the Spider Boss then kill her and grab it, 100% drop rate.
Carry on through and up the ramp to the set of ogres you saw when you first entered. Pick pocket all these and carry on up the corridor. Ignore the 2 caverns to the right with the spiders and scarabs. When you reach the end there will be 3 mobs in a triangle, there is also a orc patrolling with 2 worgs. Pick these and turn right then right again leading you up a ramp into another room. Make your way across this room picking everything you see. Leave the room in the far corner and cross the bridge to the final Boss.
Pick all the mobs in the final room and leave again. Once back on the bridge drop back down to where the ogres are below. Across the canyon will be the 1st set of mobs you started at.
Here's the fun part and why you will need sub spec. Click the closest Mob to the edge. Now use sprint and run and jump off. Spam Shadowstep and you will shadowstep across to the start. At this point all the 1st mobs pockets will have respawned and now rinse and repeat.
An average run takes 10min once you get the hang of the place and you pick everything. I gather on average say 15 boxes per run which seems a bit lower than what was previously reported, maybe a small nerf? Some runs are really good, some arent great but i've found this to be the most consistant way of looting a good amount of boxes.
Doing the math.
10 min per run and an average of 15 per run, so 15 x 6 = 90 boxes per hour average.
21000 rep from revered to exalted with 83 rep per hand in of 5 boxes. so 21000 / 83 = 253 hand ins.
253 hand ins * 5 boxes per hand in = 1256 boxes required from revered to exalted.
1256 boxes at 90 boxes per hour average = 13 hours.
1256 boxes at 15 per run = around 83 circuits of Lower Blackrock Spire.... /cry
Hope that helps some people trying to find a decent place to farm these boxes.

LBRS:
You can run back and forth without resetting up to 3 times, however its best to do it only 2 times. Once you get to 3 the drop rate gets to low its not worth it. Pick pocket all the way up, by that time loot tables below will have reset. Jump back down run to start and make your way back up pick pocketing then go back to start to reset (rinse repeat)

For Horde farming the Blackrock Stronghold 100 (GREAT place, btw), the
closest mailbox
I found was New Kargath in the Badlands. The mailbox can be found just beside (to the right of the entrance) the building with a catapult beside it. This way, you can pop over, mail all the boxes to an alt and carry on farming.
Alliance will probably find Lakeshire to be their closest mailbox.

i PP mine from the Blackrock Soldiers and the Smolderthorn Assassins. They stand in regiments, but with a little patience you can walk between them, PP them all. But be carefull, because they might spot you, if you stand to close.
But i think they have a pretty good droprate, and i find it much easier than LBRS. You can round from the first regiment to the others, and then the first regiment would have their pockets reset, or close to.
Have fun :)

This is my little guide for farming these bad boys.
Step 1: Level a Rogue to 70+ should be fine. This is just so you have a chance of holding your own in LBRS.
Step 2: Set up a macro (Either is fine depending on how you want to play) and assign it to Mouse Wheel so you can scroll as you walk!
#showtooltip
/targetenemy
/cast Pick Pocket
or
#showtooltip
/cast Pick Pocket
Step 3: Set your hearthstone to Iron Summit in Searing Gorge
Step 4: Fly south to Blackrock Stronghold in Burning Steppes and Pick Pocket the 4 groups of 25 mobs their plus any extras.
Handy Hint
The mobs are stood like this.
{ }{ }{ }{ }{ }
{ }{ }{ }{ }{ }
{ }{ }{x}{ }{ }
{ }{ }{ }{ }{ }
{ }{ }{ }{ }{ }
If you sap the one with an
X
you can stand on his head and reach the other 24 without aggroing anyone!
Step 5: Fly to LBRS and Pick Pocket every mob to the left as you enter (towards UBRS) with the two Dragonkin guard the return to the right and Pick Pocket the rest of LBRS.
Step 6: Hearthstone to Iron Summit, Pick the lock boxes, loot anything interesting, send them to your Main (or bank alt if Rogue is the one collecting the rep)
Step 7: Rinse and Repeat!
Happy Hunting!

So I choosed farming LBRS. It seem to have "good" droprate in two fresh circles and not so "good" after this. When I reset instance, it seems to not affect droprate - it is still horrible. When all mobs are alive, reseting instance gives no message, when at least 1 mob is dead, it says "Blackrock Spire has been reseted", but the droprate dose not change. Reason why I´m asking because there are several comments on MMO Champions and here, claiming that reseting also affects loot tables.

having tried most of the sites that folks have recomended I can tell you for certain that LBRS is the ONLY spot to farm these boxes. I use my 85 sub rogue but I have done this same route on an alt as low as level 68 with no problem. First used a targeting macro of your choice. Then enter LBRS and run from top to bottom ending at Wyrmthalak. Kill him because he will occasionally drop epics that you can vendor for decent gold. Now here is where my route differs a little. I do not reset. leave the bosses room, drop down to the ogres below, then to the first area where you encounter the ogres. At this point the mobs have reset and you can to the loop over starting with the ogres, then a few orcs outside the door, then trolls and so on. I did this for an hour straight and ended up with right at 90 boxes. I time it off my poisons on my weapons just to make it easier and I log out if I have to take a short break to give the mobs I am near time to refresh so I can get some extra grabs in. I have 4 26 slot bags and even though I do carry my poisons out of habit I still have over 100 empty slots. Tyrs hand is no longer valid since the mobs dropped in level and the groups of orcs outside in searing gorge are heaving farmed and I almost always run into what I swear is a bot out there.
PS. I play on a very old very populated server and these sell for 20-25 gold per so once I finish my insane run on my main this weekend I am going to keep farming these for a while. Also I use a logitech G series keyboard and the toggle repeat function is great for farming these while watching a movie or something so you only have to guide your rogue through. Happy rogueing.

I wonder if there's anything special that happens if you get Friendly with BOTH factions.
It is possible.
From
www.wowwiki.com/Syndicate
:
"There is one possible way for rogues to become friendly with both the Syndicate and Ravenholdt, but it would very likely require hundreds of hours, and to knowledge has not been attempted. Turning in Syndicate Emblems to Ravenholdt guards doesn't lower your reputation with the Syndicate. With this in mind, one could turn in one Emblem and gain 100 Ravenholdt reputation points and be able to kill four Ravenholdt members to gain four Syndicate Reputation points without going below Neutral with Ravenholdt. In other words you would need to pickpocket 3250 Syndicate Emblems and kill 13,000 Ravenholdt NPCs."

Lockboxes and chests can be opened by rogues using the
开锁
skill learned at level 16. Your max level lockpicking skill is determined by the level of your character. The basic formula is 'char level x 5'. So, a level 16 rogue will have a max lockpicking level of 80, a 17 rogue would be 85 and so on up to a (currently) maximum of 300.
Once you have learned the lockpicking skill, you will also need a set of
潜行者工具
. You do not need to buy these, you should receive them during the 'lockpicking' quest.
Once the quest is completed, you can place the
开锁
onto your toolbar from inside your spellbook. You then click this button and then click the lockbox/chest you wish to open.
As with most levelling professions, the items you want to unlock will be colour coded with the relevant chance of gaining a level point:- The word 'locked' will be red, orange, yellow, green or grey.
Red = Skill level too low
Orange = 100% chance of gaining a skill point
Yellow = Good chance of gaining a skill point
Green = A slight chance of gaining a skill point
Grey = No chance of gaining a skill point
Lockboxes can also be opened by using a skeleton key created by blacksmiths. These are NOT to be confused with the
骷髅钥匙
which is used to open the entrance to the Scholomance instance.
The table below shows the minimum lockpicking skill level required to open each type of lockbox and which blacksmith skeleton key will open it (if possible).

If you're doing the Ravenholdt rep grind and farming these out yourself, I've found the best place to do it is in BRD. The route I take requires either the key or high enough lockpicking. Enter as if you were going to do the lava skip for the MC attunement quest (opening the three doors to the left of entrance), pickpocket all the mobs in the immediate room, head up through arena spectators and then make your way over to the Bridge/Gate (pickpocketing everything along the way) and hop out the window to your right like you would doing a lava skip. From there go through the Gate and pickpocket all the mobs back towards the entrance. By the time you get back around to the start you can do another lap. Their pockets should have reset by then.
NOTE: The hounds can see stealth & The fire elementals have a fire aura that can pull you out.(Although I was doing this on a my lvl 60 alt rogue so it should be a lot more comfortable at lvl 70)

For those looking to farm these for the sake of Ravenholdt rep, here is my recommendation.
First of all, you need a rogue. Unless you have a very, very good friend or partner with an appropriately leveled rogue, it's time to roll your own rogue alt. Rogues a great fun, particularly spellcasters should find a rogue alt really fun, as they are a sneaky melee blender with a lot of survival tricks up their sleeve. Back in Vanilla, my first alt was a rogue, and as such in Classic, my first alt (following my warlock main) was also a rogue.
In order to be able to pickpocket the Heavy Junkboxes, I recommend leveling your rogue (whether alt or main) to at least level 64.This is fairly easily achieved with a few long evenings of questing in Hellfire and Zangarmarsh, possible coupled with a few dungeon runs in Hellfire Ramparts, Slave Pens and Underbog. Doesn't take long. The reason you need above level 60 is because the mobs you will be pickpocketing are in their high 50's, and the higher level you are, the less risk you have of being caught.
As far as talents, the best is to spec into 21 into Subtley for Preparation. You will occasionally get caught by a mob when attempting to pickpocket them - I estimate about a 1-2% chance of getting caught as a lvl 64 rogue in LBRS. When you get caught, pop Vanish to escape danger, but if you also have Preparation, you can keep going and if you get caught again, pop Prep and Vanish again. Well worth it. Along the way, it is also mandatory to max out Master of Deception, Camouflage and Elusiveness for better mobility and less risk of getting caught. The rest of the talents you choose don't matter much, but I recommend going down Combat until Blade Flurry, picking up basic Combat talents along the way. If you get caught and have two mobs on you, you can pop cooldowns and kill them, but if you have 3+ mobs on you at lvl 64, you need to Vanish.
Before heading out, empty your bags of everything not strictly necessary before heading down there. You just really need a Hearthstone, some Flash Powder, perhaps some food and healing potions, Thieves' Tools and a mount.
I recommend going to LBRS for pickpocketing. LBRS is filled to the brim with mobs, all in the appropriate level range for getting Heavy Junkboxes. I estimate the chance of getting a Heavy Junkbox from a mob is about 15%, which doesn't sound like much, but there are so many mobs in LBRS it's no problem. Start at the entrance, pickpocket all mobs in the first room, then go right and pretty much continue on the trodden path until you get to final room with Overlord Wyrmthalak. Then walk back just a bit to the bridge you just crossed, drop down to the ogres (the Duskbat Drape cloak helps reduce falling damage), then drop down again to the bridge to the ogre boss, and by then the "pockets" of all the mobs will have respawned. Then you just repeat this until your bags are full. Destroy any junk, food and even Star Rubies you pickpocket along the way - it's all about the Heavy Junkboxes. Now hearthstone in a safe place to get out.
Back in town, you can then unlock all the boxes with your Pick Lock skill. Turn off autoloot, and open each one to check for any goodies. It is possible to even get epics in them - I have personally found a Teebu's Blazing Longsword in a Heavy Junkbox, believe it or not. When you've snatched all the silver and worthy items (leave just at least one junk item in each box), mail them to your main who wants the Ravenholdt rep.
Have fun with the grind! Assuming you are 11999 Honored with Ravenholdt from killing Syndicate mobs in Hillsbrad, you need to perform 294 turn-ins of the "Junkboxes Needed" quest, and with each turn-in requiring 5 Heavy Junkboxes, you need to farm 1470 Heavy Junkboxes (for a non-Human). to go from 11999 Honored to 999 Exalted. It is quite a grind, but you quickly stop worrying and love the farm. The most cumbersome part of the grind is really when your main character needs to run back and forth between Southshore or Tarren Mill over and over in order to pick up the Heavy Junkboxes from their mailbox and then run up to the Ravenholdt NPC to turn them in, again and again. But it's all part of the "achievement". :)

The best farming location is LBRS / UBRS. If you have the UBRS key, it's a great increase to boxes per hour. Start the run by pickpocketing the entrance room of LBRS, and going into each cubby. When you head downwards to LBRS, dont forget to go to the right and clear the upper mobs past the entrance room. You can do a full clear of the instance and jump back down to where the ogre bridge is and the pickpocket tables will have reset in time, however if you have a second account I'd recommend doing a logout reset as you approach the spider boss down below. Also there's an addon called dejunk that you can use to keybind trash item deletion. I get about 130 boxes/hr using this method.
