This item comes from pickpocketing monsters around level 40. There are other lock boxes as well for higher levels with better items inside, and require a higher skill level.

This is one of the main ways a rogue gets Lockpicking skill ups. These boxes come from various humanoid monsters when pick-pocketed, and have to be lockpicked to be opened. Not only does this give skill, but it also can give various things for rogues (poison ingredients, junk loot to sell for money, or even gems).

Seen a few green gems, even an item or two previously, but never expected anything like this would come from a 'junkbox'...

One nice place to get these are in the Slag Pit in the Searing Gorge. In addition to the Taskmasters and Slavers, the Slave Workers are also pickpocketable and not hostile. Just stealthing through the many levels you can quickly get quite of few of these. Pickpocketed mobs that you don't kill will also renew their pickpocket loot after awhile.

This macro with autolooting enabled makes it much easier:

Another awesome place to get these is during the ZF pyramid event. Have a friend run you and every single mob that comes up has a chance of getting these as a pickpocket.

If you happen to be level 71+ and you've just slacked on leveling your lockpicking, I suggest to go to Blackrock Depths for these lockboxes. As a level 80 rogue, I just walk in and pickpocket a ton of mobs, walk out, reset, and start again. The reason I say 71+ is that the bloodhounds in BRD can see stealth, and if you're 71+ you can just sap them and pickpocket the mobs standing near them.

I prefer getting these lock boxes in BRD instead of in open world... because in the open world you have to kill the mobs and wait for them to respawn so you can pickpocket them again! What a waste of time! With BRD you can just walk out and reset, and walk back in :)

I also highly recommend getting the pickpocket glyph, increasing the range on your pickpocket ability, spec into increased range on sap, and get the lock pick glyph (reduces lock picking time by 100%) This will save you tons of times! (Obviously not required, but if you plan on leveling your lock picking up in just a couple of days this is what I would do)

**edit: Sometimes you get really lucky going through and you get a TON of lock boxes, other times it's slim pickings, but keep at it and it won't take long. -- Also, occasionally you will loot a heavy lock box, just throw them in your bank so when you hit 250 you can get a head start :)

If you enjoy straight out grinding from time to time (like me!) then you'd be crazy not to have an auto pickpocket macro.

I didn't create this macro but when I found it, it was a godsend. I utilize it on all my openers (Sap, Cheapshot, Garrote).

Cheap Shot can be substituted for any opener. Basically, the script will turn on Autoloot, pickpocket the target, turn autoloot off (This saves you having to actually click the items to pick them up when pickpocketing), then proceed to cheap shot in one fell swoop. This allows you to pickpocket without hassle while killing mobs!

If you have autoloot on by default, you'll have to remove the 2nd and 4th lines from the macro. I personally hate autoloot so this macro allows me to utilize it only for pickpocket.

There is an amazing place to farm these junkboxes - Grim Guzzler in Blackrock Depths. There are two things that make it the best place to farm them in my opinion:

1. All dwarves there are neutral, not hostile.
2. You can use someone's (or yours) Direbrew Remote to get there in no time.

Their pocket contents respawn fairly quickly, do some situps after each round and they'll be ready for the next one or you can go pickpocket dwarves and gnomes outside of Grim Guzzler for some higher level junkboxes.

Warning: Do not pickpocket from the bartender or the dwarves will turn hostile.

Best place to farm these is Zul'Farak
You can get easly 12 junkboxes per run, never need to reset instance because at the time you finished circle around ZF, pockets will be reset.
Also dont forget to wake up guys from graves, just sprint and spam open trough them, then just use vanish and pick pocket all from behind. Beware they are undead so can not be sapped

I also tried BRD, while yes it's easy, but one wrong button will screw everything up, make them hostile and they will be running around making chaos for you. Most of times i got spotted even being 75 with 3 points in Master of Deception

Just want to point you, you get a few of these doing a quest in Searing Gorge now, where Lunk (an ogre) helps put some Dark Iron Steamsmiths to sleep (by sitting on them once you weaken them).

FOr the 7 I had to knock out, I got 4 of these boxes.

Was out leveling on my lvl 50warrior with autoloot on. Later when I was going to sell greys and stuff to vendor I had two sturdy junkboxes in my bag. I have no idea how or where I got them as a WARRIOR? I was in searing gorge.

Actually i think there's a way to go around the timer problem..

If you pickpocket humanoids for lots of junkboxes and then go to SM to pick the doors, then to pick a box, pick a door, a box, a door a box etc..

That way i think the timer is set to none.. but only as long as you pick something in between. Iv actually never tried it but i'v heard it works.

the best way to lvl lockpicking, after picking zanzil's box until its greyed out, go to the Pool of Tears in Swamp of Sorrows, just keep circling around the pool looking underwater for Footlockers. Got to 220( my cap) in about an hour

im not a rogue but just by farming pirates in tanaris i found a good 10 boxes on the ground at a time. the pirate lvls may be a bit high for people who want lockpicking skill early, but there is definantly some loot to be had

OK, OK i know, i'm a 60 with out lp 300 but i'm gettin there...here is how if you are 50+(real easy at 60), go to Zul'Farrak, even though you don't see it alot on there i get about 12 boxes per run and each run is about 20 min long, NOT BAD AT ALL EH?....anyways i am at 174 i can't wait to get to 175 so i can pick the 42 sturdy lock boxes i have saved up. :D GL y'all

im 46 rougue and i pick pocheted humanoids and i had loads of lockboxes. When i was in SM i couldnt pick the doors because you needed the key. And with the boxes i had, i had no skill increase though they were green. i have 163 skill and i cant get any higher. Help me plz :(

A good place to go from 175 to 225 is Angor Fortress in the Badlands, lots of footlockers on the ground, though you will have to kill people to get to them.

I just tested the theory of the SM Doors...

open the door, then open a locked box, then open the door again...repeat.

It worked but NOT every time. It was cool when it did work.

I wanted to mention another way I found that works, again NOT every time, but it works. (for those that can stealth...heehee)

Open a door, then open the other door...then make a 'rotation' around the first little area and pickpocket those that are standing there. 1 against the left wall, the 2 in the middle talking, the other guy on the right wall...every once and a while the 2 guys will walk down the halls...do it to them too. Then go pick the doors again. It worked for me 3 times in a row and took like 2 minutes. Thats up 6 points in 2 minutes. Now by doing this, you may even get some lockboxes to open and test the other theory out too.

**NOTE--I know you can only pickpocket the guards once in a certain time, but it's the "action" of you doing it that seems to reset the doors...even though you are not getting anything in the process.

First up, if you want Sturdy or Heavy Junkboxes and you're around level 50+, try picking the pockets of the male mobs on the shores of Azshara; I picked up 20 Sturdy's and 5 Heavies in the space of a few hours of Naga-killing fun.

Secondly, I'm sure most seasoned rogues would agree that being level 51.8 and having an LP skill of 160 is pretty slack...so I took the SI:7 serving suggestion and headed to Sar'theris Strand in Desolace. Even just swimming around near the shore (36,22 and thereabouts) I managed to average 1 LP skill point every 1.5 minutes. And that without the use of special charms or potions for underwater breathing.

Contrary to a post above about the area, the boxes are actually quite easy to spot with a trained eye, and most times I was able to spot 2 or 3 at a time. The trick is to tread water just below the surface, look down and scan the area for boxes, then when a box or 3 is spotted, pop up to the surface for air, dive down, open the box(es), return to the surface for air again, rinse and repeat as required. Just be mindful of the Naga in the area, which for higher levels are simply a nuisance, but could cause some upset for under 35's.

Also both Waterlogged and Mossy boxes were reported in this area. I don't know if anything has changed in the past month, or my luck is just bad, but I have yet to come across a single Mossy box, and I have scoured Sar'theris Strand and the surrounding area quite thoroughly specifically looking for them. Perhaps others will have more luck.

I went to ZF at lvl 70 and picked everything in the instance. Each run got me about 12-15 skill. I started at 200 and went all the way to 250 pretty easy. Lots of sturdy junkbox's there.

just wondering what lockpicking skill do you need to open Sturdy Junkboxes, and what skill level does it become gray... im currently 206 lockpicking at lvl.70 and am tired of running Outlands instances and not being able to open chests...

The tower in the bottom right hand corner of Westfall were you do the rogue quest earlier on. Has a chest called the Duskwood Chest you have to click the little Unlock Key before you can unlock it (otherwise it shows up non-selectable) and its good until 175. Other than you get the touch of Zanzil which lasts for 7-days

yeah these require 175 to unlock. I hit 175 from the Darkshire Chest that is at the top of that tower in Westfall. The chest has a respawn of about 10 seconds, so it took me 20-25 min. to get about 8 lvls here. Then it was off to opening all of these at 175.

I've been skilling on the lvl 40 Goblins in Stranglethorn Vale. I've pickpoecketed every single goblin there without getting detected, Mostly 2 Sturdy Junkboxes per round. Not to mention after I pickpocket em, People come and kill em and the cycle restarts. Or, since I'm lvl 47, I kill them myself.

Anyways, It's a great place to skill up lockpicking from 175 on...

This item is neither sellable to vendors or AH. Do not know if tradeable or if they simply have to be destroyed in other to get rid of them for us with class/spec which can't open these.

Lockboxes and chests can be opened by rogues using the 开锁 skill learned at level 16. Your max level lockpicking skill is determined by the level of your character. The basic formula is 'char level x 5'. So, a level 16 rogue will have a max lockpicking level of 80, a 17 rogue would be 85 and so on up to a (currently) maximum of 300.

Once you have learned the lockpicking skill, you will also need a set of 潜行者工具. You do not need to buy these, you should receive them during the 'lockpicking' quest.
Once the quest is completed, you can place the 开锁 onto your toolbar from inside your spellbook. You then click this button and then click the lockbox/chest you wish to open.
As with most levelling professions, the items you want to unlock will be colour coded with the relevant chance of gaining a level point:- The word 'locked' will be red, orange, yellow, green or grey.

Red = Skill level too low
Orange = 100% chance of gaining a skill point
Yellow = Good chance of gaining a skill point
Green = A slight chance of gaining a skill point
Grey = No chance of gaining a skill point

Lockboxes can also be opened by using a skeleton key created by blacksmiths. These are NOT to be confused with the 骷髅钥匙 which is used to open the entrance to the Scholomance instance.

The table below shows the minimum lockpicking skill level required to open each type of lockbox and which blacksmith skeleton key will open it (if possible).
