For some reason, even with 50 fishing skill (I've read elsewhere you need 30 to get this), I was simply unable to speak to Wizbang (I already did the Buzzbox series).

I found this tip on another site, and as strange as it seems, it actually worked. I ran south of the town, along the coast, until I zoned into "The Long Wash," (the words appear on the screen). Then, I ran east until zoning into "Darkshore," and proceeded to head back to town. Upon arriving, I was able to speak to Wizbang to get this quest.

Can confirm that you need 50 fishing skill for this quest. Fished until I got 30 but still no cigar, went on until I had 50 and then I could pick it up.

Fished next to Gubber Plump for 18:43. Finished quest and also received many Rainbow Albacor and Oily Blackmouth. Increased fishing, cooking and made some cash from the blackmouth.

I'm having a good time fishing at The Long Wash, near the boat that goes to Wetlands. It has a high drop rate for Darkshore Grouper.

I caught all 8 Gaffer Jacks in 43 casts, from the dock, right at coordinates 34.42. It took me just over 15 minutes to catch enough Gaffer Jacks.

I started with fishing @ 87 and ended @ 110

In the first 11 casts I caught:

1 Stranglekelp
1 Stranglekelp x 3
4 Darkshore Grouper
1 Raw Rainbow Fin Albacore
2 Rumsey Rum Light
2 Raw Slitherskin Mackerel

The first 11 casts were adjacent to a floating debris, which disappeared after I caught the second Rumsey Rum. I caught my first Gaffer Jack immediately after the debris disappeared/was exhausted. I would guess this indicates that objects like Oilymouth schools and Debris interfere with the Gaffer Jack spawn rate, so you should avoid these things when fishing for your Jacks.

In the next 23 casts, I caught:

10 Rainbow Fin Albacore
8 Slitherskin Mackerel
5 Darkshore Grouper
&
7 Gaffer Jacks

It took me 9 more casts to catch the eighth and final Gaffer Jack. I also caught:

2 Slitherskin Mackerel
4 Rainbow Fin Albacore
3 Darkshore Grouper

Just want to clarify that you can accept this quest as early as Lv 12 and with 1 fishing skill but you must have a BASE skill of at least 50 in order to catch gaffer jacks. Bait and rod boni don't count towards it.

You can fish for these and get well-rested at the same time if you fish where the dock connects to the inn in Auberdine. Under the pier works well--you don't necessarily have to fish off the balcony of the inn.

It took me quite a few casts before I caught them all, so you may as well get a little bonus while you fish.

In patch 3.0, I spent about 30mins fishing near the shore and gone nothing, the next day I tried again from the end of the pier, and got all 8 in 8 casts.

If you already have good fishing, this is a breeze. Started with 101 or 102 fishing. 8 casts later I had 8/8 Gaffer Jacks for this quest AND 6/6 Darkshore Groupers for The Family and the Fishing Pole quest. I fished off the left side of where the inn meets the pier area.

I did this quest today with level 250 fishing to gain rep/Loremaster achievements. I fished out in the ocean on a whim, using water walking pots and caught the gaffers in 8 casts. I guess they changed the drop rate.

I did this quest at level 80 while working on the Loremaster of Kalimdor achievement. This quest DID NOT count towards that. Since a gnome gives the quest, I guess it may be possible that it counted for the Loremaster of Eastern Kingdoms, but I can't verify that since I wasn't tracking it. I will check, when I do the follow-up.

EDIT: Ok, I'm guessing profession-specific quests (this one is fishing) do not count toward the achievement. Didn't realize until after I did it, that it was a fishing-profession quest.

i did it at just before going onto the docks, you you can still see the zzz for the rested xp indicator. so, while fishing, why not build up your time on the blue bars lol would submit screenshot but it's temporarily disabled? *sigh* you'll just have to try it out while in Auberdine. just stand on the corner of the inn's platform, right where it joins up with the dock to the boats.

Easily completed the quest while fishing off of that rock you can reach from the docks. Caught a bunch of oily black mouths and a crate to boot.

What a grind! I don't think high fishing has any effect on the catch rate. I started with Fishing 204 and ended with 213. Used Gubber's lure, too, and it still took about 12 minutes and 49 casts, or just over 1 in 6 for Gaffer Jacks, spread pretty evenly throughout the entire time. Caught 17 Rainbow Albacore, 16 Darkshore Grouper, 12 Slitherskin Mackerel and 4 Oily Blackmouth. Bring a good book.

It says that the catch rate is only 5%, but I got them all in 15 minutes, about 30 casts. It's much easier than you may think.

I Fished at guffer blump.. or w/e
I started this quest with the guffer blump family fishing pole and 3baubles i finished in about 13mins starting at 36 fishing and ending at 68fishing also getting the achievment and the achievement.. good fishing xp but a waste of time for XP

This quest took me about 10 minutes. I just stood right underneath the dock behind the inn, staying rested. When i started, my fishing was at 38, and when i finished, my fishing was at 74. I was using a shiny bauble and got a point for EACH CAST. I caught several fish, including rainbow fin albacore, darkshore grouper, oily blackmouth, and slitherskin mackaral. I even caught a dented crate once, containing two coarse blasting powder. The first 3 gaffer jacks came right in a row, after about 10 useless casts. Then several more uneventful casts, followed by 3 more jacks in a row, then about 5 more casts, then my 7th jack. The 8th one took about 15 casts to get. I did notice that claims from other posts about having a better chance once fishing is about 50 does seem to be true. I didn't even catch my first jack until i was almost 50.

On average, every fifth cast I got a gaffer jack. Though I do have 446 fishing, I don't know if that really matters anymore. I fished where Gubber Blump is. According to the quest description, you could probably fish anywhere. :)

it's on the dock, to the right hand side ... inbetween 2 posts, there are
4 boards and seperating those boards are lines ... 3 lines ... you want
to go to the middle line ... close to the edge ... 34.0 and 42.4

I placed myself next to the fat dwarf, threw the lure out 8 times, and got 8 fish + 8 gaffer jacks. With maxed fishing skill for the zone, it would seem like it is a 100% drop rate.

You may know that i did this quest staying at 34,8 42,8 or you can simply understand 34,42 and throw the fishing line at the east and at any cast i threw i caught a gaffer jack. Quite easy quest.
I must remind that i had 44 fishing when i started it.

Realized this quest just after I turned in The Family and the Fishing Pole and, new fishing pole in hand and at fishing level 70, started casting off the dock near Blump.

Got all eight Gaffer Jacks in eight casts, as well as 2 Darkshore Grouper, 3 Oily Blackmouths, and 3 Raw Slitherskin Mackerals.

Very easy quest.

For those of you who are big on achievements and haven't taken the time to do the 1000 Fish achievement and whom haven't done this quest (a small number of people, but still...), every time you fish up a gaffer jack + whatever else (fish, junk, etc), it will count as 2 items on the achievement counter, thus taking half as much time to 1000 as it would have.

Did this on my NE priest, lv 12, and i have to say, incredibly easy, out of 9 fish attempts, i got the gaffer jacks i needed. Fishing=Skill lv 58, went to 66, used the Strong Fishing pole, +5 Fishing skill there, and then i used the +25 bauble, giving me a +30 bonus. Overall, incredibly easy quest, and incredibly easy xp. One more comment, took less than 30 seconds.

I started my lvl 15 mage with this quest at 100. Getting bait is my recommendation, for at least +50 fishing. I started out to the left of Glubber Blump.. farther down on the shore. Can be really found anywhere. For the next part, I went to Wellspring Lake close to Ashenvale(i believe this is the name) for Electropellors. At 115 or so, they come every 4th or so cast. It took me about 10 minutes to get a steady pattern of the drops, but dont worry.. it comes easier :).

its probably just a coincidence, but the only time I was ever able to catch these damn things was while I was fishing off a rock near the northern exit to the auberdine inn. Tried other places nothing, kept coming back here and every other catch was a gaffer. Anybody else try this spot?

For all those who are saying "It doesn't drop", it does.

I am using the FishingBuddy mod from ui.worldofwar.net and it keeps track of % drop rates of fish.

For the Gaffer Jack, it showed an overall drop rate of 11.3%, and I was fishing off the pier where the boat to/from Menethil comes in, and I started fishing there with a skill of 75, though most likely it could be lower as it didn't appear on it's own, but with other fish.

Took the advice here and fished from the rock just outside the northern door of the inn. I caught:

7 Mackerel
4 Rainbow fin albacore
3 Oily blackmouth
4 Darkshore groupers

and

8 Gaffer Jacks

that makes a drop ratio of about two to one.

BTW. I was at lvl 75 by the time I started fishing

Every time I try fisshing near Auberdine I got the message "Your Fish Got Away".
I have Fisshing Skill of 30, Strong Fishing Pole (+5) and Fishing Lure (+25).
So Fishing Skill of 60 in total.
I tried to change location but the same message every time.
Does anyone know whats the problem?
I play on an EMU server.

I got this quest on my lvl 14 hunter. My fishing lvl was 30 and didn't need to log/relog to get the quest. I just went to Wizbang and saw a yellow ! over his head. I also only completed the first quest from both Gubber Blump and Wizbang, so I only had the Blump Family Fishing Pole with +3 fishing. Anyways, with the just the fishing pole it took me about a good half hour to complete the whole quest.

Since some people were saying you can only get this quest between certain fishing levels...I decided to see if I could get it. I am level 20 ne with a skill level of 75 for fishing. I went to this guy to get the quest, and I could get it. Since I'm a little high lvl for the quest though, there was NOT a yellow quest marker above his head, but once I talked to him I was able to get the quest if I wanted. Cheers!

I fished off the dock in Auberdine where the boat comes in from Menethil. Drop rate was terrible for first two Jacks, then changed to 1 drop about every 4-5 casts. Takes a bit, experience ok/hour...

This quest is almost not worth the effort. The only real good that came from doing it was that I fished my way from 30 something fishing skill to 80+. I tried several locations mentioned in previous comments, but I go all of my gaffer Jacks under the pier.

Level 19 and 20 Fishing -> No Quest
Tried logging out as per above poster, still no quest.

Checked every 5 fishing points until 45 fishing, no quest.

Logged out, logged back in, quest is there.

Something wierd about the logging in and out to be able to get the quest, but that definitely did it for me.

When in the inn, head north (Follow the arroow on the mini map) to you reach the water, ca. 10 meter. The drop rate for me was every 5 time at skill lvl 140. Happy fishing :)

Had skill of 36 and decided to take some advice from past posts, first idea was to travel to Darnassus. Had to set up a few auctions so yer. I got back and bugger me dead. The quest was available.

I read a post and decided to go to the far dock; straight out from land, caught to fish that weren't right so tried Wetlands dock. I got three there. I thought they could be caught with any type of fish but I caught them with Raw Rainbow Fin Albacore, Raw Slitherskin Maceral and a Darkshore Grouper. I got three with Darkshore Grouper.

I started at 10 skill, got to 36 to get quest & I'm now 75.

I've tried a new character. Lvl 14 NE Hunter with lvl 13 pet. Started fishing with skill at 1, got this quest at skill 35.

Took over an hour but got them all at Eastern dock. Fishing skill increased well.

I reallized the quest is given out after you reach level 50 (base level, no baubles or lures) of fishing skill,

My 28 Druid raised from 13 - 40 and no quest then all the way to 51 and Yes he talks to me :)

Level 44 dwarf hunter with fishing temporarily maxed at 225. I got all 8 Gaffer Jacks in less than half an hour standing on the bigger of the two rocks just outside of the inn at the north end. I think that is a very good spot. Got a lot of nice, juicy groupers too!

You got to have 30 in fishing skill to get the quest, but you need luck to get all Gaffer Jacks quickly.

I read about a dranei how had to train for skill 150 to get it. That could be a rest of early problems for dranei to get various quest.

A good place to fish is outside the inn. If you stand on the right place you are even restig! :-)

Tips]
Rise your skill in cooking with all the extra fish. You can buy recipie for Slitherskin Mackerel close to Teldrassils FP and for Rainbow Fin Albacore by the fisher man who stands above the beach a short walk south of Auberdine

if you up your fishing skill somewhere easy (darnassus or the lake near dolanaar) you can have 30/35 (whichever gets the quest) by the time you get to auberdine.

buy a couple shiny baubles (or higher bait if you can) and try to get the +5 fishing pole from Nessa Shadowsong (near the path to darn. from the FP) and you'll have an even easier time.

it's a good quest to do at the same time as Gubber Blump's "The Family and the Fishing Pole." just stand near the inn and find the right place to be 'rested' and fishing and you're set.

Go to the tiny island just south of the Auberdine dock. You'll know you're on the right island when you see a campfire and a broken down house.

I fished on the western side of this island and retrieved all 8 gaffer jacks in less than 15 minutes.

I found the Gaffer Jacks ar Cords 32,43. The drop rate is decent in the beginning, but it'll most likely take you 3-5 minutes to get all 8. When you get them, you are most likely to catch them with another fish.

I tried fishing on a rock near the northern entrance of the inn and caught only 2 there. When I started fishing on the rock right in front of Thundris Windweaver I was able to obtain all of the gaffer jacks.

Ok i started this quest after the Blump Family Fishing Pole quest, and after fishing very little in other areas.

Caught 1 Gaffer Jack: about 5m to the right of Mr. Blump; <Skill: 77>
Didn't catch any for a while.

Decided to try actually fishing off the dock, since the quest said he took a boat and dropped them overboard! (What a lush!)
Caught 2 in a row off the dock, just past the Nightelf guy.
Then caught 1 Gaffer Jack every cast or every other cast from the same spot on the dock.
Coords (35,43) - On the lefthand side of the dock.

On fishing skill 150 it took 40 throws to get all 8 Gaffer Jacks so drop rate is 20%. It is all the same where you are fishing (in Auberdine shores) so window from inn is good place (You can rest while fishing).

This is worth of gompleting because of the next quest in line ;)

I first tried to get these items just outside the door of the questgiver, as soon as I got onto the pier, without much luck. I walked a half of the way down the pier and got a much better rate: about 1 in 4 casts. However, it's possible to fish from the very beginning of the pier, and get your rest bonus while you fish ;)

You can do the quest in well under an hour.

I had over 100 fishing skill when I started it. As long as your skill level is high enough to begin the quest, it seems to be irrelevant after that.

My level 15 druid had did The Family and the Fishing Pole, and I got her up to a 66 in fishing and he wouldn't give the quest to me. So I did what was suggested by others and ran to the end of the pier..when I came back he had it.

Druid Level 21 - fishing was at 17 when i started trying to find if i could get this quest. I would fish on the docks just after the name changed to the long wash. I went to see if i could get the quest at 20 fishing... nope, 25 nope, 30 nope... oh wait yes at 30 i could get it, it just doesnt have an ! above his head.

so fishing 30 and try talking to him even if he doesnt have an ! if you really want this quest, if it doest work then go out half way down the docks till it changes location name to the long wash and go talk to him again. I have the family fishing pole so it may be a requirement.

This is going to sound ridiculous, but after fishing for the better part of an hour, I got my fishing to 75 and he still didn't have the quest. Then, the person I was fishing with ran out along the pier halfway to the boats and came back and he suddenly had the quest. Still didn't for me, so I did the same thing and sure enough, there it was... Might be worth a shot if you're having trouble getting the quest.

In order to get this quest you must have completed The Family and the Fishing Pole. I had 61 Fishing and couldn't get the quest. Then I turned in 6 Groupers to Blump and Wizbang had the quest.

I too fished off the far end of the dock, took a little while to get 8 of them. A side benefit is you can also catch Oiley Blackmouths, which are regents, to underwater breathing potions if you have Alchemy

Much hate for fishing quests.

To get the gaffer jacks, fish off the coast of Auberdine (I did my fishing off the docks, near the boat to Menethil). The gaffer jack will be fished up along with your regular catch. Be prepared to spend quite a bit of time getting the gaffer jacks... and note that completing this quest leads to ANOTHER fishing quest...

With a 300 (+97) fishing skill this quest took 15 minutes to complete. The last Gaffer took the longest to get- about 5 minutes. I fished off the docks right there near the quest giver.

Not sure if this quest has been changed, but I just fished up the Gaffer Jacks in 8 perfect casts. I was standing immediately to the West of the last large support beam on the western pier (the beam holds up the canopy).

You have to get your fishing skill to level 30 and THEN run down the pier and back. Trips out on the pier prior to attaining level 30 in fishing will not help.

The "Washed Ashore" quest is not a prerequisite.

I learned fishing from Glump did the "family" quest from skill 1 to about 20 (one bauble). Couldn't get this quest until I hit skill 30 afterwards, so most likely there's a skill requirement.

I've always picked up this quest on every alliance character I made, and then I couldn't with this one. I started at 24 fishing, fished up to 40, and read that was sufficient. The things I did were: accept blump's second quest, get a few crawler legs, and (I'm thinking this is it) accepted and completed the first washed ashore quest. I went far enough away from him to get the bones, so that could have been it, but it doesn't seem like it from what other posts here say.

If you have the skill to do the quest, but can't get it, try doing the first washed ashore quest.

the key is to fish from a different spot on the pier each time. whether you get a gaffer jack or not or even hook no fish move. and I don't mean 2 steps to the left. move some ways from your last position. when I did this the jacks looted faster (except that last damn one).

Either the requirements of having to complete The Family and/or The Fishing Pole to get this quest are just plain wrong, or I caught a glitch of some sort, or it was affected in a patch. This was the second quest I got on the mainland, right after leaving Teldrassil, the first being Washed Ashore from the woman at the landing site. I'm about to look up now how to get them.

This quest took me less than 15 minutes. Level 21 night elf druid, fishing 150 (+5), off the south side of the boat dock in the Long Wash, or 34,43 for the coordinately inclined.

My fishing was at 40 when I got the quest. I bought a Baubel and it only took me about 10 minutes to get all Gafferjacks.

Nice easy quest if you ask me.

OK, I have fishing of 0 or 1 or whatever the default is.

I'm going to check back with Whizzbang at 20, 25, 30 35 and 40.

Finally finished the quest! Took 35 minutes in total to complete, last one was a pain to get!
My fishing level went from 71 to 93 so all around pleased ;)

i caught all of my things from besides ol' bubba gump. I think the best advice I read on here was to look for a shool of useful fish that you can either cook, eat or sell.

i can't even find the guy who gives this quest. i go to his coords and he's not there. my fishing skill is 30 and i've done all of the buzzbox quests. anyone know why i cant see him?

Juh-EEEZ! I wish I'd known that the 36,44 co-ordinates were also great for the Darkshore Grouper...
By the time I got my 8 Gaffer Jacks, I had fished up 9 of the Groupers. Just more food for me and my pet I guess. :)

Got 8 of these in about 12 minutes. Fished right off the pier.

My fishing was about 80, and I was using the fishing + 3 pole given by Gubber Blump in the "The Family and the Fishing Pole" quest and a nightcrawler (+50 fishing). The nightcrawler ran out after catching 6, and I got the other two within 2 minutes..I probably didn't need the nightcrawler in the first place.

I'm a level 14 hunter and i'm struggling to get the Gaffer Jacks. My fishing's at 71, might try some of these comments and move to different places on the pier.

I got a solid 20% drop along the south side of the west pier, took about 15 minutes. If you look you see that there are a few crates on the ocean floor right there.

Looks like you need a fishing skill of at least 35.
I did this on a character around level 20 not realizing it was there and having done The Family And The Fishing Pole, later on an alt i was unable to obtain this quest and couldn't figure out why, thinking i needed to finish the above mentioned quest and that not being the case i then thought maybe i needed to finish all of the Buzzbox quests i was confused to find out that this was NOT the case. Eventually i think i saw someone mention you needed a certain fishing skill level and i tested it out and this does appear to be the case. Hopefully this information can help someone else who is also confused to save time and frustration.

When I got fishing skill 60, the drop rate improved.
I quickly completed the quest.
I fished near npc Wizbang Cranktoggle.

I recommend grabbing the quest "The Family and the Fishing Pole" as you will catch Darkshore Groupers here too. I hit the same spot also, exact coords 30.0,47.8, which is directly in front of the camp fire near the ruined beach house. I spent 15 minutes fishing starting at 53 skill and went up to the limit of 75. Caught a total of 35 fish, which for me breaks down into 16 Rainbow Fin Albacore, 8 Slitherskin Mackerel, 8 Gaffer Jacks, 7 Darkshore Groupers, and 4 Oily Blackmouths. Hint: If you find that you start having misses and timeouts, pivot your toon's feet in an arc from the shore to change angles of the direction of your casting. That seems to help for me. Oh, forgot to mention, I used a baubule.

Did this quest at lvl 51 with 226 fishing. The rock at 36.74, 42.24 is where I cast from and it took 46 casts to get all 8.
I did try further out on the dock before I read the info here so thought I'd just go where most others fished as I hadn't caught anything in about 10 casts.

As the top comment (at the time of writing) states, the "Gaffer Jack Rock" located outside the northern entrance to the inn is the best place to get these.

Took me exactly 50 casts to get the jacks.
I was 97 fishing skill, finished at 117.

I hate fishing IRL, I hate it in WoW...

I tried from different spots, from the shoreline, to the big rock, and all the way to the end of the peer. It really makes no difference. It is purely random.

Went from 50 to 113 fishing doing this quest. Follow-up is even worse.

So I took a ship to Auberdine and had a little too much to drink on the way. I dropped my box of gaffer jacks overboard! I need my gaffer jacks!

I don't know exactly where I dropped them, but if you fish for them in the ocean you might get lucky...
