I've come to a stall in this point of jewel crafting. It may be related to the current status of the sub-60 economy on the beta servers, but there really seems be a lack of ways to gain efficient points. I suggest *not skipping* any type of thorium veins you see, as they'll be yeilding the oh-so-precious star rubies(and ore to prospect) you'll be needed to progress.

This is focused on leveling jewelcrafting from 1-300 as quickly and easily as possible when The Burning Crusade is released. This should give you edge over players who are unprepared when the expansion is out. I have chosen designs with easily obtainable materials opposed to cheap materials, and I have not considered resale value on items. Additionally, this guide was written during the beta so design specifications and material are likely to change. Please note any changes as this was made during beta and things may change.... even though it's only a little more than a month away! :P
Once the Burning Crusade is released, the below materials will likely increase in value as Horde and Alliance shuffle to their respected cities and try to power level Jewelcrafting. I strongly recommend not only buying what you'll need to level to 300, but also extras in case something goes wrong after The Burning Crusade is released.
Here is the list of best case scenario and recommended amounts of materials for 1-300 Jewelcrafting but I recommend you use the list below this one:
7g 12s 80c for training
180-240 Copper Bars
50-75 Malachite
100-140 Silver Bars
40-60 Shadowgems
100-140 Bronze Bars
75-90 Jade
90-120 Elemental Earth
120-180 Thorium Bars
30-45 Star Rubys
30-40 Large Opal
This is the list of materials I

Some General Discussion Points on Jewlcrafting and experiences with it, the ramblings of a guy trying to make gold for gems who uses his characters to augment each other.
Okay, This assumes you are not a veteran guildie with access to limitless mats at good prices. You guys do whatever. This is for the mainly solo player, who may do a lot of PUGs, and has been playing WoW since pre expansion, who wants to think about the viability of this skill for money and personal augmentation. (You wanna use what you make :) This is for people who know that your 70 character represents days and weeks of effort, some fun, some like trying to do quests in tarren mill when schools out of session- that is to say, it can suck hard to get that damn toon to 70, it represents an investment. For your first 70, you do not want JC. If this is your first 70, this isnt the class for you. Get BS, LW, Tailoring, or Alch. Those are the best first character proffs, and will help all your future alts a lot.
I gotta say, I really think this is an alt or second alt profession.
By far, this is an awesome choice for an alt who has a Blacksmith or Engineering main. You will have a bunch of mats in the bank and level very quickly, as I did. Also, you will probably have a bunch of truesilver in your bag, as I did. My experience is that for my BS, I found this stuff in regions that were incompatible with my level/power needs. In other words, In the blacksmithing tree, i found truesliver out of line with my char level as far as item usefulness went. By the time I was mining truesilver, I wasnt using that gear level anymore. In fact, after truesliver breastplate, I didnt use it much at all, so when I made my JC alt, I had 4 stacks in the bank, and it was cake. JC rocks truesilver way more than Eng or BS. Some level-great items are made from truesilver, and a lot of them. This prof did a lot for the value of this mineral, imo.
Gold also, was a mineral I had a lot of.
There are some great healing gear pieces pre 60, less so for spell damage types, and a few stat cluster/bumps you'll not top for like 4-5 levels, but nowadays people level up so fast to 60+ that these items are in fact devalued, as people spend less time per level pre 60 now, so, you get some use pre 60, but the real value for this skill comes in socketable gems, and really, nothing you get pre 350 is really special. But once you get rep with consortium, lower city, and scryer/aldo, you see some good stuff start happening. And frankly, honored is where it starts, but revered will get you most of the way there. Exalted is less rewarding than revered, IMO, for a JC, in terms of rep rewards with JC. Also, look ahead to factions like Scale of Sands. (JC pinnacle is in Hyjal, violet eye, etc lol- I have not been yet, but im omw)
First, the ruby, star of elune, talasite etc level of gems sell reliably well, and you wont have mat requirements for them, so you're pretty much prospecting all minerals for those nicer gems. pretty much able to get 20-30g per any of the more useful gems, and for solid stars of elune, consistently30-50 depending on server. Which makes adamantite ore really your best friend. This is where you make the best cash and will have to use AH a lot. Recipes on Bonechewer at least are running 150g -800g with solid star of elune consistently being among the most expensive recipes for standard use stones. If you find this recipe learn it though, don't sell it, even if you do need a flying mount asap. These are the recipes where cost and return are the most advantageous.
Meta gem recipes are great-but only certain head piecesof certain levels can even be fitted with metas, so the market is very small, and you'll need an alchemy transmute to get what you need mat wise here, if you have an alch alt or guildie then great, otherwise, mats get pricey and your margin shrinks again.
Also, while Crown of the Sea Witch, etc, are awesome, I really have to say that most JC non gem recipes aren't worth the cost of making. I have been looking, and khorium is just not as easy to mine or come by as blizz assumes in the recipe balancing. IMO, if you're a serious player, most of the made stuff non gem isnt cost effective, and most is bettered by a few instance runs for equivalent level drops. Buying the recipes for 70 requirement items just adds to the cost of mats for making it and really destroys any margin you can get. It sucks to sell something for 500 gold and really only make 50g, at least it does for me. And I am sick of searching for khorium. Everyone needs it, and when i need it i get all huffy about farmers, cuz its damn hard to find and expensive. And warriors hate seeing JC miners roll for khorium. They just do.
Most likely if you are a JC 375, you are 70 running at least the shadowlabs, shattered halls, bot, mech, arc, or kara, and if so, then recipe items arent that great. You're instead looking for BoP Super Gems like Don Julio's heart, (+14 spell damage) which come from rep rewards with Consortium or Lower City. These are unique equipped, meaning you can only have one per weapon, I believe. (May be one per character) and hey, you can't sell em, they're like armorsmith armor.
Furthermore, if you want the highest level stuff for this class, you gotta go to places like Hyjal, and get with the keepers of time. Not exactly casual gamer territory. If you're not in a guild, much harder to reach the summit of JC as opposed to say, blacksmithing, where you can, solo or PUG, find/afford the recipes for felsteel reaper, fel edged battle axe, etc. Noobs will buy the first tier non BOP epic weapons like crazy. They dont stay up long, and now AH gives you 48 hour auctions. You can overprice fel edged battleaxe and get rid of it in one weekend usually. Good margins there.
There are a few small windows pre 350 where you can make some good cash and usable items. However the vast bulk of income generated will be from 1)prospecting ore for gems, 2)getting a good recipe catalog, and then step 3, spamming those lame ass advertisements with !gem. Its no life.
These days, with char leveling being so fully mapped out and post 2.3 nerfed, its all about what will you be doing with this toon at 60-70, and its all about outlands. Buying gear for non twinks under 60 is foolish and a waste of time after your first character, so selling lower level item stuff makes less money/sense- no one spends enuf time there to make a difference. When TBC first came out, a lot of peeps made BE/Dran alts, and had a ton of saved gold and mats they had for years in the bank. They would buy tons of junk for alts on their way up, and that inflated pre 60 gear/items for a while. Now tho, people are tuned in, and level up really fast. Its all about those mid 60 level socketable gems. But I will say this, adamantite yields for me, around 1 talasite, living ruby, etc every 20 adam. ore on average, maybe a little less. Every 4-5 prospects I get a blue gem. Every 4-5 prospects I get around 20-40 gold then. Look at prices nowadays on your server and compare adamantite ore with raw blue gem prices and see where its at. It may be that buying adamantite ore for your prospecting is worth it, although adam is easy to farm. a stack of adamantite ore under 20g is worth it, over 20g and not so much, depending on your recipes.

regular uncut star of elune goes for 30 g regularly, and 30-50 g as a solid star. (I use that one because it seems to hold higher value and recipe is expensive as well=popular.) But on a weekend, even solids are selling lower-that is, there will be a lot on the AH, and range of price will be 30-50g. So you can often buy it for 30g even though many are probably sold higher when someone with impulse control gets a new item they just HAVE to socket right now, so they buy the 50gold one. This means that you buy star of elunes at 30g and sell for a margin average of around 5-10 gold. I also use that 5-10 gold to describe opportunity cost of not just selling the stones uncut. That is, if you craft a solid, you lose the straight 30g you could sell it for. And you know that some gems sell for LESS WHEN CUT, which is really true for stars of elune-non solid. Some of those +3/+4 types of cuts, you know what i mean.
Consumers seem to prefer one single big boost in a category, like +12 stamina rather than +3 in one and +4 in another, not by that much but by enough that price reflects it. +8 hit, and +8 defense, rather than splitting it. This is because its easier to say, if I lose this chest, its all defense, I can then use this cloak which gives defense. If each piece was balanced, you'd be able to customize less, right? Also, +3 or 4 crit doesnt mean crap to me. I want +10 or its a waste of something, unless say it stacks with both the socket bonus /and/or the regular green text bonus to equipment.
Finally, choosing a profession gets broken down to this.
A: How many characters do you have at 70?
1) and this is a weak choice, imo.
2) and this could be good, but really, if you run a lot of instances, your second character is probably an enchanter. You got sick of seeing all that useless vendoring of potential prismatic shards. Furthermore, TBC has seen the growth of this profession flourish. Nowadays, a lot of people are kicking their harvesting talent, (Skinning, Herbalism, Mining,) and just getting enchantment as a second skill, cuz they have the cash to buy mats now and want that great disenchant skill.
3) or more characters, and you now know a lot about the game, and are able to plan out and follow a level/rep/item-instance strategy from 56-70 to maximize power and gear and recipes and rep, you use wowhead or thottbot to efficiently grind, farm, or level. You waste less time and money, you dont sell valuable recipes or patterns to vendors,
***lol, I still remember vendoring steel weapon chain twice pre tbc, (Blush) and I vendored some BOE purples before I knew how IMPORTANT the AH is (OMG sold nightblade, blazefury, and kang to the damn vendor on first toon.) Noobs, its a part of the game experience. AH- Know it, love it, spend 15 minutes a day there everyday. Once your up on prices, you can really make money moving crap around in there. :)
I guess this post rambled, but i didnt want to do the extra effort of posting links to everything, so its a generalized discussion. This game is huge, with major time investments, years of playing. If you're in a guild that is raiding often with a good core group, all professions become easier and more profitable, because you get more rare recipes and materials, and probably have a guild bank you can level up very quickly with, especially if your guild NEEDS a profession. If you like playing by yourself mostly, its a differrent game.
Hope this helped

Jewelcrafting depends on your economy of the server you are on.
In my specific case on a high population server. I managed to make over 100 thousand gold from jewelcrafting in about 5 months.
It takes a lot of initial gold before you start to see a steady flow of gold filling your wallets. I did this with about 1-2 hours in Ironforge everyday Buying ore and uncut gems, prospecting and cutting blue
and green gems.
Average Chances:
Ballpark of 18%-20% chance to get a Blue Gem per prospect
150% Chance to get a Green gem
(1.5 per prospect)
100% Chance to get 1 Adamantite power per prospect
Some Tips:
Always cut and sell uncommon (green) quality gems.
Never Assume you'll always get a Blue Gems per Stack of ore. The Chance is random, you may have one day of getting a blue gem every prospect and one day of hardly any. It all evens out in the end
Advertise in trade chat as you cut/prospect to cut gems for tips, free money never hurts
If you manually farm a lot of ore, Invest in some blue Ring/Necklace recipies. Create some of the more desirable rings/necklaces
The prospecting rate on fel iron ore is really low, do not buy this ore for prospecting.
Always calculate your profit margin in the long term after factoring in the sell prices of green plus blue gems and vendored adamantite power. I always shoot between 15-40% profit margin
Match the buyout price of the lowest gem auction, set the bid price lower, and set the auction for the least amount of time you can manage. If someone has listed gems way under the average gem price, buy out the gems and relist them. You'll make more money in the long term.

At 350 skill, you can train Grand Master Jewelcrafting and start cutting WotLK gems. This helps a lot because previously the best way to level up JC at this point was by cutting the Rare world drop blue gems which are now very difficult to find.
As a quick note, I recommend going to Northrend and doing the
Gem Perfection
quest (if you go to The Howling Fjord first,
Gem Perfection
). This way, while you skill up off the uncommon gems, you have a chance to cut a perfect gem, which sell very well on the AH.

Here is a list of all the JC trainers, sorted by faction:
https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/search=jewelcrafting+trainer#npcs:0+4+3+1
To get the JC skill, you need the Burning Crusade expansion. Start out at the following trainers and learn
Apprentice Jewelcrafting
, this will allow up to a max of 75:
Alliance:
Farii <Jewelcrafting Trainer>
Horde:
Kalinda <Jewelcrafting Trainer>
or
Aleinia <Jewelcrafting Trainer>
You can learn all the way to Artisan at the trainers above to reach a max of 300.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once you get to at least 275, you will need to hit the Outlands trainers to learn
Master Jewelcrafting
and reach a max skill of 375:
Alliance:
Tatiana <Master Jewelcrafting Trainer>
Horde:
Kalaen <Master Jewelcrafting Trainer>
Both (in Shatt):
Hamanar <Master Jewelcrafting Trainer>
(Note: If you have gained Scryer rep and have become I think hostile to the Aldors you will not be able to talk to this guy, and will have to hit the other two above for training)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At 350, head to the Northrend trainers to reach a max skill of 450 (require the WoTLK xpac):
Alliance:
Alestos <Grand Master Jewelcrafting Trainer>
Horde:
Geba'li <Grand Master Jewelcrafting Trainer>
Both:
Timothy Jones <Grand Master Jewelcrafting Trainer>
If you have WoTLK you can train everything at the Northrend trainers but you're most likely going to need an AH to go broke buying all the mats you need, so it may not work out too well ;o).
