Another must talent. Extremely useful in PVP. This will save your life when your trying to shut up a mage that is about to cast a spell on you or trying to sheep someone. This is also very useful in PVE against those pesky caster mobs.

The drawback to this talent unfortunately is it remains in a specific part of your talent tree that takes up points that could be far more effectively spent. To obtain this ability you must invest three points total; 1 in Silence and 2 in Improved Fade. At this point in the talent tree one would be far more tempted to invest n the 20% increase in casting range or a full investment in Shadow Weaving to increase your shadow damage output by 15%.

Early on you will have to decide if you want Silence but be less effective as a Shadow Priest, but at later levels (47+) there is no excuse not to have this ability.

Combined with arcne torrent (bl elf racial) can give an advatage in fight ( however it may be hard to get in close range in some cases).

Horrible, horrible leveling talent. Silence costs 225 mana flat, and at level 30 it's an insane amount of mana. To put it in perspective, Heal (Rank 3) costs 255 mana and heals for 582-658. Offensive spells at level 30 do not deal nearly that much damage.

Silence can also be used as an "Interrupt" effect, since it shuts down the cast if someone is in the middle of a spell when they're hit with it.

Do note, however, that if the mob (or player?) in question is Immune to silence effects, they will also suffer no interrupt effect from the failed Silence. This can lead to some disappointing situations (to put it mildly), so don't rely on it blindly, especially in higher-difficulty instance/raid pulls.

Far from a "must-have" - this talent is very situational in solo and 5-man PvE, and completely useless in raid situations. It is not an interrupt like a rogue's Kick or a warrior's Shield Bash, and many raid enemies are immune to Silence effects (but not to interrupts).

If you're a PvP Shadow Priest then go for it, this talent will serve you well. But if you're building primarily for raiding, skip it.

In PvP this actually works just like Achmed says it does - 5 second silence is godlike. You can heal yourself up, or just cast 2 spells within it.

Changed to 30 yards on the 3.1 PTR and with Shadow Reach we now have a 36 yard Silence.

This change has been due for a long time. I still dream of a world where it is on a 24 second cooldown with Counterspell/Spell Lock though.

but maybe it should have 30sec cool or 30yd range
mages' counterspell is at least as good as this and with talents it gets a lot better. silence is a talent altogether so i think it should be better than at least the unimproved counterspell

it seems to me that this ability would be more useful that CS because it silences from the start regardless if a spell was cast... with a mage if you use CS without them casting a spell it does nothing

Even if your only enemy is a rogue, it can be used like counterspell. To keep the rogue in combat and not allow him to restealth for another opener. This is fairly rare it will happen, but it can be quite usefull that way.

At lower lvls this spell does more damage to your mana bar than the fireball your about to eat and heal it back up. However, this spell doesn't scale and it's a very cheap spell ones you get to lvl 70

Silence has so many uses in PvE and PvP. It is very good for pulling caster trash mobs; the threat it generates seems to be much less than that of CS. An example of a great place to use it is definitely in blood furnace against summoners. If they start summoning felhounds or seductresses, silence them!

The mana cost is 225. It is always 225. At first, this is a lot of mana, but in the endgame its almost nothing.

Oh, and the icon looks like a bat to me, but it is the same as the imp's phase shift.
