These have about a 1 in 100 chance of being inside the shellfish traps underwater. It's pretty easy to farm one. Just get a water breathing buff or item and swim in a circle opening traps. It took me about 30 minutes to get one. If you are alliance on a PVP server, I'd suggest farming these in off hours when horde are less likely to be in the area.

Don't farm these to sell, you'll waste a lot of time. Just get yours and move on, cause there's probably about 10 horde druids trying to farm these.

Attempted to farm one of these for over 2 hours. There were also HORDE farming in the area. we kinda made a round robin looking. and got NONE. If you have a lot of time or if your gaining exp by killing the mobs in this area then by all means try to farm one. BUT otherwise you might be better off buying on AH. I would say 1-200 chance but then again I opened 200 and got none.

Once you are lvl 44 you can obtain a better fishing rod. The quest is attainable at 44 but requires you kill 15 mobs between lvls 48-50. However these mobs are non-aggro turtles, it should be a breeze to party with someone for a few minutes, kill the turtles, and go collect your nice fishing rod. Not nearly as time-consuming as opening a bazillion shellfish traps.

How unfortunate. I myself have picked up so many of these by grinding shellfish that I suppose it would have been be wise to sell them at the shared AH. Last time I found one of this I have to leave it behind because my bags where full and i didn't want to waste time. Btw, horde gets payed for the shellfish...
Alliance fanboys don't.

I had read horror stories about people spending hours trying to farm for this fishing pole. I think it is much easier to farm the gold and just buy it off the AH. I bought mine for only 5g, so almost no time was investing in attaining this item.
Check your AH and consider farming gold to buy it rather than searching shellfish traps.

Man is this a pain to get. I spent at least 2 hours looking for this to no avail. The only bright spot was that, being horde, I was able to make about 5 gold with the shellfish i got from the traps. Still no fishing pole though.

I got 4 of thses 1 after another between the hours of 6:30-7:00 Am
Took me four days of coming and going because of other hordes or allies in area wiping out traps before i could get to them. Take potions or items that will help with air breathing and/or swimming.
Without you will need to stop at the fissure in between each trap.
To get (horde only ) mounts this will take alot of time its about 3-6g and hour without air or swim spells.

Unfortunately, this spot has become a speedbot magnet. The last three times I've gone there (on two different realms, no less), there's been a player with a speed bot racing between traps, farming them all up. It's always been a hunter, too.

It took me about an hour and approx 100 shellfish. I figured out a pattern to search the shellfish trap with out using any potions or swimming to the surface. Start at the Bubbly Fissure located at 19,81 (We will call this bubly #1). Basically run a circuit to trap #1 19,82 then to Trap #2 19,82 (yes, fairly close to each other), then back to Bubbly #1. Next goto Trap #3 located 20,79 then to bubly #2 19,78. Once your full on air swim to trap #4 19,77 and back to Bubbly #2 for a fill up. Then do the longest swim to trap #5 21,80 and then back to orignall Bubbly #1. That's it, just repeat the circuit and eventually you will get the fishing rod. Notice 1/4 of the traps you open will release a lvl 33-34 lobster you have to kill. If you not high enough lvl you may run out of air fighting these so be carefull.

I had to create an account just to tell you how lucky I am.
A lot of the posts are saying that this one is a rare find so I went to Desolace while I was doing Nat Pagle's Artisan Fishing quest to see if it's as hard to find as they say. I got one after the tenth trap. I thought it weird at first, seeing as it didn't even take me ten minutes to get this. So I tried another trap right after and I got another one. o_0
I'm of the opinion that Blizz improved the drop rate for this. Either that or I was just lucky. >.<

Actually, there is a Horde quest,
Catch of the Day
, which requires you to bring two Bloodbelly Fish to Nataka Longhorn, an NPC at Ghostwalker Post. In order to receive the fish, you need to do the
Fish in a Bucket
quest for Jin'ar Zillen in Shadowprey, and that in turn requires you to bring him 5 Shellfish. So it doesn't necessarily mean that people are farming for the fishing rod when they open these shellfish cages. I wasn't, for instance: mine dropped while I was completing the quest.

Lvl 70 Dwarf Hunter, doin the Nat Pagle quest for Fishing 300, figured I'd loot while the pet fights. It's on my way to the Desolace fish anyway. 1) On Balegund as of this post 210 shellfish traps opened and I've never seen this fishing pole.
2) Why not just go to the forest and smack the gnoll that drops it? (haven't tried given the drop rate, but on a nonpvp server I'd think this would be cake
3) Maybe you have to be lvl 70, but at 46 I do *not* get 50s every time I turn in the shellfish, I just get the fish he says he's going to give you....
4) The shellfish traps spawn lvl 27-32ish (?) agro mobs so don't think you're going to swim out there with a breath potion at lvl 1 and make a killing. (Tough if you can even get there unguarded at lvl 1 maybe you could farm there haha)

Some tips on farming this item
1) Swim in a
big
circle so that you hit all of the traps.
2) Make sure that you loot them every time, even the trash. They don't change their items once you've clicked them, so leaving the trash there is a waste of time.
3) As mentioned above, some kind of water breathing buff is a useful, if not strictly necessary.
4) If you're a herbalist, this quest is much more lucrative and less tedious. There's lots of
Stranglekelp
in the region. I farmed out about 40g worth of materials in a half-hour. Expect this price to rise with WotLK
It helps to be a little bit higher level than the zone, so the lobster monsters don't give you any trouble.

Just make sure you take an underwater breathing potion. I am going to try and get a second today. I do not know if having one in your bag will affect the odds of a second. Will post on it later.
Follow up: Level 35 Paladin. 30 Minute underwater breathing potion:
40 Shellfish
6 Greens
2 Fishing poles
- As I mentioned, the first came at the 11 minute mark. The second at the 30, as I was going back to the village after the potion ran out. Last cage.

I should have submitted this well over a year ago...
Yeah, I would say it all comes down to the roll -as usual. I remember it took me between 2 1/2 and 3 hours one time when I was getting one for my alt. I had a lot of time on my hands that day and was farming while working at the same time. So I stopped here and there for quick phone calls.
Anyways, several days later a guildie wanted one too, so I figured we can swim in opposite directions to cut the possible drop-time in half. Was handy to have a shaman to cast underwater breathing. So we hopped on Ventrilo so I could explain to him that the cages were laid out like an oval track course. That I would swim clock-wise and he would go counter.
He still had difficulty understanding, so I decided to have him follow me, so he can learn which way to swim and get familiar with where the cages were underwater. Never opening up a SINGLE one during the demonstration. So, we then went back to the "starting line" and were ready to begin after a good 15 to 20 minute explanation.
BOOM ! The very FIRST cage I looted, then Pole dropped. Bauhaha ! What makes it even more ironic is my wifey further up this thread also got her's a few week prior on her first drop as well.
Luck of the draw, I guess...

Using gatherer helps as well(you can keep track of each spot). I have gotten this pole prolly 6 times now for diff people and it has taken anywhere from 5 minutes to around 2 hours. Last time I got it was today. I finished in bout 20 minutes and having 42 shellfish. other times I have finished with 200+ the one nice thing about this is that it is not soulbound so you can use it for a new fisherman and once you get higher and get the Seth's pole or the arcanite one you can send this one to an alt.

Almost 2 hours and 80 shellfish later I couldn't find another one. I searched all over the damn area too. I must have hit every trap at least once. Had to head to work so logged out.
But there's a happy ending. Came back the next day and found it on the seventh trap.

at lvl 56 and 300 fishing found places i dont have the skill to fish with out lures , even with a plus 5 pole , so to desolace I go .
First one was after 2 of the 10 UW pots expired down to 5 pots and no second pole yet , The drop rate 1% is accurate . First one dropped at about 50-70 traps , second pole dropped at about 230 traps. so it averages out if you get a pole or 2 fast , concider your self LUCKY ! .
In any case it drops for both horde and aliance.
Any time thottbot has 3000 or more kills and lists em the % is going to be pretty right on its when you get 23 kills and 1 drop thats when to be carefull it could be a 1 in 1000 drop and they got lucky.

No respect I say, no respect at all!
my advice to fishermen.. grind for it, dont buy it on AH unless you're lazy or have too much gold. (if you have too much gold, just give it to me;) Your patience shall be rewarded!
Fishermen are usually a patient breed, so a couple of hours opening traps isn't gonna discourage us is it?

All these tactics on rounds to swim all sound very nice but are a lot of work. There is an easier way to get it and it doesn't concern throwing away a few hours you'd rather have back:
The Shellfish Traps respawn every 60 seconds.
Find a Bubbly Fissure with one beside it (there is one at loc(19,81) with two traps next to it), (or just be a druid/ warlock/ potiondrinker/ whatever to breathe underwater).
Park your character in the bubbles, look on your screen once in a while, open the crate, and go back to whatever else you need doing (reading a book, watching a movie, picking your nose, etc.)
Fishing like this might get you a few less per hour (about 50 traps an hour), but at least you can do something else at the same time.

1) Buy pots to breath underwater
2) Sooner or later you will get what you look for
3) This is not a fun way to get a rod
How long it took me:
Two underwater breather potions

This item is very much a "by chance" item. You guys need to realize that. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to their dropping.
I'm a level 60 Druid with Seal Form of course, went a couple of days ago to grab one of these for myself. 2 dropped in my first 8 traps. Of course this got me extremely excited, mostly because I planned on outfitting several of my guild mates with the poles in return for favors they had already done for me.
So the first one was mine of course, the second actually went to the Guild Master, and I kept on going hoping to find at least a couple more considering the amazing luck I had.
Well, I must have opened 200 more traps, started going a little nuts, started feeling like it was the lottery, I got a big payout in the beginning, but just ended up losing in the end (losing out on the limited playing time I have that I could be doing better things).
These drops are all by chance, and once you do get yours I suggest you give up and move on unless you really want to go buggy while greedily searching for more. This is coming from a Druid with Seal Form remember - not only can I breath underwater infinitely, I can also swim at twice the speed you normally can. I couldn't imagine having to go through the whole surfacing to breath/breathing pots/dealing with mobs if I was lower level crap.
Get yours and move on I say! And if you're a lowbie befriend a high level Druid. I spammed the mobs with Moonfire twice and they went poof!

Visit Shadowprey Village, South-West Desolace, on the coast. (lvl 35/45 area, out of the top of my head) Jump in the water at the harbour, and open the Traps you find all over the ocean floor.
Traps give you lobsters that can be handed in at the dock in exchange to fish you (Horde) need for a quest. Traps might also trigger a lvl 35-ish mob to spawn right on top of you, especially if you open a trap you have opened already a short time before. How delightful.
o.0'
Some people find the Pole within 2 minutes, others never find it, and a rare few get a handful of these in an hour. They are sold on AH irregularly (obviously more often during weekends), prices shifting from (as I've seen) 25 silver to 7 gold.
Hope this helps you. Wonder where the comments went, this was all here before.

Thanks to everyone's comments on here who made it fairly easy to find my brand new Big Iron Fishing Pole! And so here is my effort to pay it forward to someone else:
I did the following loop of traps and once I got into the groove it was pretty easy:
1) Start at 21,81, which is at the base of a little hill.
2) Go south around the base of the hill, keeping the hill on your righthand side to the trap at 20,82.
3) You'll be looking into a canyon, so follow southwest around the left side of the rim of the canyon to the trap at 19,85.
4) From here you'll be looking into another canyon and if you look into the distance almost due west you'll find a fourth trap at 18,86.
5) Head due north, keeping the rim of the canyon on your right, and tucked away behind some ginormous sea anenomes you'll come to another trap at 17,84.
6) From here, if you look at your minimap you'll see Shadowprey Village to the northeast. Head straight toward it. Doing so will take you into a canyon. Look straight down and at the bottom of the canyon you will see another trap at 19,82 near a bubbly fissure.
7) Coming up out of the canyon, keep the canyon wall on your right and follow it toward the surface and you will come to a trap at 20,80 at the base of a familiar hill.
8) And from there just continue a few yards around the hill back to where you started at 21,81.
I didn't care about grinding for cash so I usually just rooted the giant lobsters, since it was quicker than fighting them. After all the only reason I was doing this was to get the pole, so the faster I could get to the next trap and open it, the better. Sometimes I was actually too fast and I came to a trap location before it had respawned, but that was no problem since I just went to the next one.
Aquatic form obviously was a huge help, but if you don't want to use a breathing potion, keep in mind that all of the traps except the one in number (6) are near the surface, and number (6) is near a bubbly fissure.
I must have picked up 100-120 shellfish and several pairs of boots (and one green item), but I kind of wanted to see if I had the patience to not give up, especially since there are two for the taking in the AH right now for about 8g apiece, but it ended up not being too bad. And of course there's the added little perk of pride in knowing I worked for it myself. But I recommend talking on the phone or otherwise multitasking while you're doing this since it doesn't take a whole lot of brainpower and doesn't exactly keep you on the edge of your seat.
And now I'm going to use my new pole to finish my Nat Pagle quest!

Minute 1: Young, hopeful, happy and eager, our protagonist, a 70 gnome rogue, pops a water breating potion and submerges.
Minute 20: Slightly more sluggish, but even more diligent, our hero presses onward, opening about 2-3 traps a minute. God speed, young man.
Minute 30: Half an hour, halfway through with the potion. No pole, but a ton of shellfish. probably 60-65 traps opened.
Minute 45: Irritation is beginning to set in. The f-word sees more and more action as the search turns up fruitless. With still 15 minutes left on his buff, he sighs, and continues.
Minute 60: The buff wears off. No pole. A ton of shellfish, but a much wiser view of the world. Surface. Hearth.
Summary: The droprate is not nearly as good as these people claim, and I have reason to believe that these people were the extremely lucky outliers. If you need a pole, just stick with what you've got. As for getting 3-4 in one hour, they must've nerffed it, or someone is a huge liar.
Things I've learned:
Occasional monster spawn = 50% chance, often 3 or 4 times in a row
Well worth it, good money maker = someone with diarreah of the mouth
Occasional Greens = 1
Commentary: If you really really need this pole, buy the thing. It's only 25-ish gold. That's like a stack of terocone, which takes less than a &*!@ing hour.

For those of you who don't have the co-ords mod, the traps are to the far south in the waters of the horde city. Don't get greedy and fish the schools of firefins and blackmoth you see because a horde pat will come by and kill you then you loose the elixer of water breathing that you only brought 1 of. I found the pole doing about 5 laps around ~15 min.

44 LVL Lock
Day 1
4.5 Hours Opening Traps
373 Shellfish
24 Pairs of Sandals
37 Cuirboulli Boots
41 Reinforced Chain Boots
21 Rusted Parts
101 Lobsters Killed
44 LVL Lock
Day 2
3.7 Hours Opening Traps
241 Shellfish
14 Pairs of Sandals
25 Cuirboulli Boots
33 Reinforced Chain Boots
17 Rusted Parts
77 Lobsters Killed
44 LVL Lock
Day 3
2.2 Hours Opening Traps
151 Shellfish
8 Pairs of Sandals
12 Cuirboulli Boots
21 Reinforced Chain Boots
10 Rusted Parts
66 Lobsters Killed
If you can't tell I'm getting alittle frustrated with this trying to get this pole as each day I went back to the traps my time spent going after it was getting shorter and shorter. I'm about to say screw it and buy it off AH. But I prefer not to do that because I'm more of a player. If I know I can get it for free I'll do that instead. I love a challenge but this rediculous.
But I'm telling you this pole has got be the hardest fackin thing I have ever gone after yet. Don't get me wrong the money is good and all from all the Lobster kills, but thats not what I want.
I still do not have this pole but again this is Day 4 and I'm going after it again. I'm going to take all the advise you guys have stated in this thread and see what I can do but like I said I'm about to say screw it.
If anyone else can relate to this post please correct me if I sound rather dispondant. I don't know what I'm doing wrong or if I'm even doing anything wrong, but I do know my fishing skill is one of my prides that I have. I have even completed the Nat Pagle, Angler Extreme quest already as well. So this Pole is just a matter of pride to say I have it. Then I'll be going after the other poles as well. I really enjoy the fishing part of this game and its always fun to see what all I can pull up. Chance is what it's all about.
So anyways...I'm done ranting for now and stay tuned...I'll be back. I'm going after this pole again today and * BY THE SLIM FACKING CHANCE * I do manage to get it I'll be posting my pic with it.
Grrrrr Stupid Lobsters & Shellfish should all die because of this pole quest....lol =)

I had no idea these were a hot commodity. I got one last night while trying to complete the Catch of the Day quest from Ghost Walker Point. I have no idea how many traps I opened, but let me put it this way: I got the Big Iron Fishing Pole BEFORE I had reached my 10 Shellfish needed for the 2 Bloodbelly Fish. So I'm guessing it was less than 20 minutes. Here's the kicker: My fishing skill is still at 1! LOL. I suppose I'll start fishing now since I have a decent pole to work with after lvl 100 Fishing. Oh, btw, lvl 32 horde pally (mudeel on misha). For those of you that searched for this thing for hours...resurfacing sucks! If I decide to go back to find another, I'm taking UW potions with me.

12 Shiny Fish Scales - 5 Cuirboulli Boots - 2 Reinforced Chain Boots - 1 Rusted Engineering part - 1 Double mail vest - 87 Shellfish later NO BIG IRON FISHING POLE :o( NO Green Items either. Good Luck.
There is a Bubbly Fisher to help with breathing underwater around the 21,81 coord. cage, if you do not have have potion for underwater breathing. Just swim on top of it and your breathing meter will fill. Hope this helps.

First of all, thanks be to Thottbot and the wonderful advice of their readers! Bless you all! I needed and wanted a Big Iron, so at Lvl. 43 with my Mage, I jumped in. I had five (5) 30 minuts Underwater Breathing Pots with me and used them all. I opened 33 traps in about 45 minutes, and Bingo, my pole! I hung around, as I had more time and ended up spending a total of 2.5 hours (5 pots) looking. The last three minuts of my air, I lucked out and found my second pole! One for me and one to sell. I enjoyed it. It's a fun way to farm. I counted my gold before going in and earned about 1.5 Gold just from the Lobster-mobs! I got an additional four Green drops, each worth a Gold or better and one Blue Cape, worth 75-100 Gold at the AH! Not too shabby for 2.5 hours work, not to mention the fun of the game. Thanks again for the wonderful advice!

I am leveling my Fishing and cooking at same time so that I can make my own buff food and was reading about the Big Iron Fishing Pole on here so I decided to go for it - I was reading that it takes a while to get it and that I needed to be patient and after 1 hour I was getting discourged... I decided to take one last 30 minute breath and with 11 minutes left on the buff the pole dropped - So it took me a total time of 1 hour and 19 minutes... But it is worth it cause as said in other comment - they selling in the AH for BIG money - so after I get my fish I need might give it a second go to try to get another to sell for cash
PS - I swam all over and didnt have acertain route to take - After the hour I read more comments and seen the "Swim In Small Circles" method - gonna try to get my second pole and see how it goes - will post with more on that issue

At the south end of the bay (away form the Troll camp) I was able to stay under water the whole time by breathing from three different Bubbly Fissures. They were in a Y shaped canyon and I was able to swin to seven different traps from these three fissures. Four of the traps were in the bottom of the canyon while three were up on the top edges. I was able to see the three while floating in the bubbles as high as possable and looking around and using my pointer to ID what was out there. It took about one and a half hours to get my (DROP) big iron fishinf pole. The canyon tail or end of the (Y) was the colsest to shore and split going away from shore, and two cages are in the left fork of the Y.
GOOD LUCK. sorry no cords :-(

on my old character, the first pole i got, took me about 5 traps. the second pole i got, it took me 2 hours straight of traps. I have -never- seen this pole drop off of the lobster guys, and have killed a million of them. I've also found out that generally traps that drop items like boots or weapons, have a better chance of dropping the pole then one that always spawns a drysnap or shellfish.
I've seen the pole go for 50 - 100g in Orgrimar, havent check in Ironforge yet.

As of Nov 3, '05 9am, it took me 35 minutes. I didn't count the traps I opened, but I got 42 shellfish, 5 Cuirboulli boots, 1 cross-stitched sandals, 10 spawned mobs, and then my big iron fishing pole. When the trap gives shellfish, it will be either 1 or 2. I would say it was around 40-50 traps for me.
I know someone mentioned something about agro below, and maybe something's changed, but it was normal, these mobs were 14-15 levels below me and agroed me only once in 35 minutes because I swam through the mob. That's not including mobs spawned from the traps which agroed almost every time because of vicinity.
When doing this you can use an enduring breath potion, or use the bubbly fissures, there's about 4 of them around the traps. You can make a nice circle and get nearly every trap without downtime, because of the quick spawn rate. Look at the map of the shellfish traps (click on shellfish trap above) and you'll see there's a small radius you can circle around to make the trip very efficient.
I hope this helps.

Read the other comments on this listing for a full hunt description detail.
Stand at the end of the dock, or any of it's adjoining beaches in Shadowprey facing the ocean. Dive into the Sar theris Strand and head SW looking down for traps.
Dive down:
you better have breathing gas. You should know this, but for some lower levels that are perusing: Buy it at auction, spend some time waiting for a low price. There are people that sell it for silvers, and there are people that sell it for golds, so be careful.
The humanoids are 32-34 at the beach and in the water around the pier, lvl 35 further out.
It's all in the luck of the draw. I did get a number of rare items and made all my alts very happy fellows, paid my expenses for breathing gases and buffing potions, got my fishing pole, and profited 10g for that 4 hours. There was one persistent elf that was bound and determined to take my route from me and just as I was about to give up, I got my fishing pole from the last trap. I was on my last bottle of gas! But my expenses weren't that big, one of my alts is an alchemist so I get my potions and breathing gas at cost.
I wish there was a recipe for all these stinkin' shellfish!

Then my sis with the dk looked in her mains bank and found another one. Yippi Skippi! Now i have 2 to switch between my characters. I might put one on auction house. . . eventualy. . . after i win the fishing contest and get the nifty pole for my main. . .and my alts.

I got mine after checking about 70 or so traps. Took about an hour at most for me. Make sure you bring some water breathing potions. Or if you are a shaman like me you have a nice spell to use. :)
There are also a few stranglekelp spawn points in the area for any fellow alchemists.
Oh, and it's probably not worth it to farm these if there are already one or more people there, since there aren't a whole lot of traps. Though they are spread well, and spawn back reasonably fast.

Went in three times today in between runing RL errands ... not sure how long I was checking traps. Checked 30 to 50 traps I'd guess. Opened one right after dying (blundered into 4 or 5 lobster boys), and there it was!
The lobstermen in the area are lvl 34 or 35.
It's in the southern ocean area of Desolace - if u get in the water to the north u won't see any. They look like wooden or bamboo box-shaped cages - just right click to open.
I'm so stoked! This could have been worse. I didn't put more than two hours into it. I was checking AH for it the past few weeks and never saw it once. Now I'm gonna be a fishin fool!

I got to the place where the traps are, then drank a potion and headed underwater (actually I had opened the first trap before remembering to drink the potion). The SECOND trap I opened had the pole. I literally hadn't spent even two minutes looking; I still had 59 minutes on the water breathing buff left. XD

Like most, it took me a little over an hour to finally get one of these to show up from a crate. +20 on the fishing rod is as good as an alliance can get without winning the tourney, and if you're dumb enough to have sold the one Seth gives you in Shattrath as part of a quest there (like I was), then this is your only option. So you just have to ask yourself is it worth the 20g (on my server) to buy at AH, or spend an hour in South Desolace? Your call!

Sure, the horde can get a better fishing pole, but that's not until the high 40's. This is a non binding +20 fishing pole that only requires level 25 & 100 fishing, so you can move it between your alts when they're able to get a better pole.
With the more recent change to underwater breathing & all of the bubbling fissures underwater in the area, this is easily done now without using water breathing pots. I spent about 2 hours yesterday with my lvl 33 blood elf hunter on Drenden getting one of these and never used a pot. I would have likely used water breathing potions anyway, but none were available on the AH.
Horde have it easier getting this, because where they're found is just off the coast of Shadowprey village. Horde can also turn the shellfish in for vendorable Bloodbelly Fish (2 of these fish are also used for a delivery quest to Ghost Walker Post above the kodo graveyard in Desolace)
First Time I ever farmed for these was with my Night Elf hunter on Stormrage when she was in her 40's somewhere a few years ago. She got the first one after about 45 minutes, got a second one within a minute or two of the first.
Depending on the price of these poles on your server, it may be more worth your time farming the gold and buying the pole (if you have a high level toon to farm gold with).

Good luck all!

Swim out to 18,82. Their are two traps down deep, and two more on higher ledge near them for total of 4 traps.
They respawn very quick. Did not need water breathing potions, but you can not delay or you will drown. Swim down, open, loot, then swim back up.
Took me 54minutes to find pole. Best wishes and luck to others that go.

Very easy to find if you lurk over the air bubbles and hunt only two consecutive traps at a time. I found four today while trying to get another item out of the traps alone; kept one for myself, gave one to a friend, and sold the other two on the AH for 45 gold a peice.

How do you farm for shellfish traps? is it class specific?

You farm them by swimming to the bottom of the sea along the Strand in South Desolace. The traps are like any unlocked chest, click to open them.
BTW, a lot of posts around this subject indicate a fundamental ignorance of drop rates. They are random and lucky or unlucky you may never, ever, ever see a particular drop of something even if it has a high drop rate. Whatever that is. The pole has about a 1% chance of dropping. Chances are persistence will pay off but then again maybe it won't. There is nothing you can do to improve your chances with the exception of KEEPING AT IT.
Of course, the advice to bring water breathing buffs should be followed and the suggestion that you keep a positive farming attitude (look at the gold you may grind) is helpful.
For those of you who like to know, found mine in under an hour but only one in about an hour and twenty minutes. No green drops from the traps but two from the mobs.

Spent hours trying to get the rod and failed! Thought I would have one more crack at it and went to the AH for some underwater breathing elixir. Bought one that allowed me one hour down there. Looked for the azure sash and deepdive helmet but none for sale. Then I looked up the rod to see how much they sold for in case I got 2 (ever the optimist!)and saw one for sale with a b/o of 4g and a bid of 1g 50s so I put in a bid on the off chance.
Went to look for the rod and spent an hour underwater killing shellfish and getting everything but the rod! I think the drop is much lower than people think and you must be very lucky to get one.
Anyway I get back on land and looking at my post find that I have bought the rod! And have loads of shellfish which more than paid for it :-)
Moral of the story... while looking for the rod you will make enough to buy one. The rod isn't soulbound so prices will only get cheaper..

The shellfish are for a horde quest. You turn in five and get 50 copper and a bloodbelly fish (level 25 food). This is repeatable as many times as you want.... Turn in two of those fish for another quest at Ghost Walker post.
Unfortunately, there's no rep gain for this quest, so you can't use it to get a raptor.

I was there for probably about 10 minutes when I got my first one. About 20 or so minutes later (give or take just a couple minutes) I got my second one. This was all while repeatedly killing a pretty inept Tauren Druid that just wouldn't stay away from me... I'd use Hunter's Mark to warn him off, and he'd just keep coming. Anyway, got 2 of these in probably half an hour or so, more or less. Thinking of going for more for AH bait. :)

Just went grinding for 1h:30m, and no pole. First off, quite a few posts assume a certian amount of knowledge about the area. When someone refers to the dock, they are refering to the dock at Shawdowprey Village, which is a Horde Village. So, if you are alliance, you have to find some other way to the area.
I was grinding this thing as a lvl 57 rogue, so killing the mobs was not an issue, got a few green items, and a bunch of grey crap. Again, as with any drop item, it is luck of the draw. I killed everything from teh farthest north area on the Strand, to the farthest south and opened every trap multiple times. (bad luck I suppose).
You will need underwater breathing (via potion, or whatever).
Good luck and good hunting.

It is a pretty well established fact that fishing for particular type of fish in a specific location is affected by the time of day you fish. It seems to rotate on 6 hour cycles (12a - 6a, 6a - 12p, 12p - 6p, 6p - 12a server time). The guys at Blizzard could very well have applied the same logic to hard to find items like the BIFP.
It would be very helpful to determine if this is the case if everyone posted the server time they found their BIFPs in the traps. I think we could very quickly find out if time is a factor.

Back when I was around 35-40 I used to visit Desolace and look for this thing and although I didn't put in the effort lots of people did I never found it.
Tonight I decide I'll see if I can go find it and thought it would be funny if it dropped out of the first cage and low and behold it did!

You guys are going too crazy over this stupid fishing pole.
Big effin deal how its 20-40g on inflated servers...fkin noobs.
FOR HORDE PLAYERS: (a lot of horde posters here..)
If you actually want a decent fishing pole and you are bent on fishing as a profession... just wait till you hit level 43-49. You will probably in some point in time go questing in the Hinterlands. In revantusk village you will be able to pick up a quest called Snapjaws, Mon! obtainable at level 44. a relatively easy quest.
here is the reward from the quest:
纳特-帕格的超级钓鱼竿FC-5000型
guess if you're a bad horde player and you don't know how to make money.. sure! go ahead and waste your time swimming around in the water.
Alliance: If you want a decent fishing pole you
will
have to swim around looking for the Big Iron Fishing Pole. HA! HA! or... try and win the fishing event in STV.
good day. flame on.

It took me 143 traps for the Fishing Pole to finally drop, unlucky maybe but the 220 Shellfish for the 55 silver reward per stack of 5 made this very worthwhile.

This thing is the biggest load of crap! I got the underwater breathing pots and spent 1 1/2 hours down there opening traps between 1AM-3AM, so I was virtually alone, only ran into two other people and they didn't stick around. I didn't keep count, but I'd say I opened over 100 traps and not a single fishing pole! I got a few greens and probably 100 worthless shell fish, since I'm not Horde! Wish I would have just bought one in the AH and not wasted my time!

Ugh. I spent a total of 2 hours, 20 fast swim pots, ran a pretty good circuit. Ended up with 170ish Shellfish, a few white vendor trash pieces, a couple random greens, but no fishing pole.

Did it with no underwater breathing on lvl 43 warrior. There's plenty of Bubbling Fossil to keep you breathing. Just get familiar with the spawning points and pick a route that fits you.
Got it after:
300+ Shellfish
10+ white boots listed here
30+ grey boots not listed here
1 green boot
7 cogs
... and 8 hours of cage opening plus
2 rage quits

If you are Alliance on Firemaw, do place all your Shellfish in the Booty Bay AH.
I check regularly and will buyout all quantities at 45s / 5 (1,8g per stack of 20)
Let's make that grind worth your while :)

Took me 70 traps to get my big iron pole, I didn't want to buy underwater breathing pots, or swim speed pots, or hope I got to a trap before someone else did. My plan was to go and find a fissure that was right beside where a trap spawned.(I used 19.00,77.61) I looted the trap, moved to the fissure so i wouldn't drowned and then waited for the trap to repawn, then loot, and repeat. I timed the first 20 traps just to get an idea of the respawn timer, shortest time was 1 minute and 13 seconds, longest time was 2 minutes and 52 seconds.
in the 70 traps I got
1 green boot
7 grey boots
1 grey cog
72 shellfish
1 big iron pole
just keep trying!

So here we go again. If you haven't played classic before then with the exception of the pole from the competition in Booty Bay this is the best pole you will get on Alliance side.
Location:
Desolace
Coordinates:
In and around 20,80
Looking for:
贝壳陷阱
Aids:
水下呼吸药剂
There is Bubble outlets on the seabed to avoid repeatedly swimming to the surface.
Easy enough farming rotation, respawn rate of the traps is few minutes at most. However it is a lengthy grind, took around 100 cages per pole, making it roughly a 1% chance as stated by others.

Back in Vanilla, we farmed these to raise funds for our mounts. For nostalgia, we returned to so the same now, found everything the same, but we cannot get any of the cages to open. Has it been changed? We don't remember exactly what we did as Alliance Druids - except dying a *lot* doing this. I've read all through several threads like this one that talk about drop rates and patterns but not about specifically what to do to open them or if it has changed. Thoughts? Directions? Grateful for links to conversations I have missed.

Spent about 2.5 hours farming traps, unlike the 5-6 bots that were there for 14+ hours. 175 shellfish, 2 green boots, and I junked the greys due to bag space. 0 fishing poles.
The bots really suck the fun out of these. There were so many, my friend and I could barely do the quest ONCE earlier because we don't have swim speed potions or anything and the bots did (3 were Druids though). They would swim right in front of us and take them, then go back to the exact locations to sit and wait for cage respawns. We did get the quest done, and I was trying to find the pole for my friend during my farm because he was really excited about it.
He's a BRAND new player so the whole bot thing was really disappointing to him. We will have to watch the AH for the overpriced ones or wait till Hinterlands.
I know it's just a fishing pole, but you kind of want the new people to enjoy the game. I do anyway.

Three full hours (I counted the breathing potions), and nada, zip, zilch. Oh, lots of useless lobsters (I'm Alliance, hardly worth throwing them away), a few other drops and a silver or so from the big lobster NPCs I'm killing, but damn all for fishing rods. Bah, useless. I'd have done spending 12G in the AH and rewarding some more patient soul. Lesson learned, bah.

Took me a $%^&ing 314 tries to finally get this one in SoM, was a really painful grind seeing how many boots dropped meanwhile (the ones on 3% chance) and i also got 3 junk parts (1% chance) + well over 200 shellfishes that sold for 35g on BB AH. Statistically you have around 67% chance to get it if u open 100 traps but oh well, odds are odds.
Worth mentioning that the price of this rod is around 50g on the biggest server in SoM right now, so thats actually a decent way to potentially get some gold if u have patience. It's also not BoP so if u somehow upgrade it in fishing contest u can safely resell it.

To anyone attempting a Big Iron Fishing Pole farm in the SoD 25 level bracket:
- be ready for a painful, slow, dangerous grind
- the gold reward from turning in the shellfish was removed, so that will reduce more incentive to do this, but i found the fish reward vendor price was able to cover my repairs
- if you are not undead or warlock using underwater breathing, you WILL want underwater breathing potions
- before you approach traps, plan your escape route
- not every trap can be looted without aggroing the nearby makrura patrols but most can if you wait for them to patrol far enough away
- putting a marker on the nearby makrura patrols can help you in gauging aggro distance before you go in to loot. i would also recommend an addon like 'rangedisplay'.
- get as far away as you can from the trap while still able to click it
- if the trap spawns a makrura, there is a brief moment after spawn where it can't aggro and you can use this to stealth, or blink away sometimes and make enough distance to not aggro.
- the spawned makrura is not going to be killable, just run
- use every defensive tool your class has and as much armor, health and possibly frost resistance you have available. if you do not strafe move so as to not present them your back, they will daze you and almost certainly kill you, so only use strafe movement to run away.
- as a mage i made sure to use frost armor, arcane int, dampen magic (for frost shock), mana shield and blink. regeneration chest rune could be used to heal when i get low after breaking aggro while still in water
- i found the spawned makrura would be despawned by the time i looped around again to the trap that spawned it.
- i'm probably 2+ hours in with no drop so like i said, this will not be fun.
Happy hunting.

definitely recommend druid with feral spec with the added talents to stealth. swim up as seacow, open cage, immediately shapeshift to cat and hit stealth if you see the red nametag spawning in, swim on to the next. little downtime save for bad respawns or patrols.
got mine in about an hour of goofing off and not really wanting to play wow anyway (watching youtube) so sold it for 20g, now going to farm again and keep one for myself. if i don't get another one, no biggy.

Definitely took me just under 4 hours but I finally got it. When you first enter the water from the path down there's two shellfish traps that are relatively shallow, straight ahead from there and a bit deeper is a bubbly fissure you can get air from. Surrounding that bubbly fissure is 3 more shellfish traps. You can grind these 5 traps efficiently without waiting for the traps to respawn and without having to use underwater breathing elixers.

Just a little tip for anyone farming.
At 19.11, 81.31 there is a bubbly air fissure between two traps. You can chill here between the two traps and the respawn is super quick. Probably less than a minute after you've looted both. It was the quickest way I found.

metroboomkin
Snagged the pole after freeing 247 shellfish and a pile of boots and sandals.
As others have mentioned....
It will be in the last trap you search.
Use underwater breathing spell or potions for ease.
Bubbly fissures near the traps at the bottom of the underwater canyons provide air to breathe, so consider that as an option if you're running low on o2.
After circling the area a few times (hopefully you'll find it with haste and wont need to) you will develop a feel for the respawn times and locations and find an efficient strategy.
