Many players do the quest without finishing it just to keep this awesome rod. If you want to keep it and not have the quest sitting there in your quest list just don't accept the next stage of the quest at the shrine when you receive this. If you to decide you want to finish the quest later you can always go back to the shirne and pick it back up.

This quest starts at Raene Wolfwood in Astrannar, a chain for the, non-official, reward of the famous Furbolg Transformation!!

The first quest she will give you, 'Raene's Cleansing' will get you scouting for a Gem and a friend.
The poor sop will be found rotting,,
The gem is located in the middle of Lake Falathim on a random Murloc, 20,43.

Next quest will be ' An Aggressive Defense'
You will need to kill
Foulweald Den Watcher: 0/1
Foulweald Ursa: 0/2
Foulweald Totemic: 0/10
Foulweald Warrior: 0/12
These are located at 49,61.
Then return to Raene Wolfwood.

You will then get 'Culling the Threat',
which requires you to go kill Dal Bloodclaw and bring back his skull. Roughly around 38,34.

Once you have done this, the chain will continue on, but you will be provided with Dartol's Rod of Transformation!!!

Dartols Rod of Transformation has a cooldown of 1 min, and no lvl req. It will transform you into a Furbolg, but when you are hit you will lose the disguise. This does not prevent other furbolgs from attacking you and neither can you talk to them.

really?..i tought it was 19..o well lol. Btw, the creatures in this are lvl 26-28 at one point and 20-22 at another, so it may require some help.

Note: im sry if those lvls are incorrect, its been a long time since ive done the quest (Did it at lvl 24..now at 44 lol)...im almost certain they are right tho :)

Well, i found out a strange thing.
1. Create a macro with /roar
2. Use the macro while your running
Resulting that you bow down, in some strange way, it looks like youre hiding =P

Well I found also out another cool thing, If you create Water/food, you will freeze. I guess this also works when making something, yet to be tryed.

A hunter using feign death while in furbolg form will give you the dieing furbolg animation as well as the sound. Very fun to have on RP realms.

Pretty simple questline, with an epic ground mount you're looking at 20-30 minutes MAX to get this device.

Just remember on the 6th part where you enchant the rod, don't accept the next part of the series.. and it's yours!

I've tested them, and to sum up/clarify what different people have said here: only the following emotes have working animations in furblog form for all classes:

/kneel
/sit
/lay or /lie
/sleep

Additionally, if you do ANY animation emote (via macro) while running, you get sort of a Quasimodo/Linebacker movement. While it's not exactly an animation, it IS a unique movement that's executed by the player, and so it adds to the slim list above.

It's too bad that /dance doesn't work; a dance like a Druid's bear form dance would be sweet! Maybe someday Blizzard will put it in. Then again, if you could be a dancing furblog I don't think anyone would complete the quest ever again.

THE ROD GOT NERFFED!

In the PTR the rod only works in Ashenvale. It can't be used anywhere else. :( That means once Lich comes out, all out run will be over.

One of the funniest looking things you can do while in furbolg form: go swimming and strafe left/right while moving forward/backward. You move without moving any body parts. It looks HILARIOUS, especially when you do the furbolg yawn at the same time.

One thing that isnt mentioned here, is that you can cast this furlbog form, while in debuff forms you get from different stuff, to remove them. The ones I know of are:

During Hallow's End, Innkeepers do tricks and treats every hour. Tricks will transforms you into either a worm, black cat, mini diablo, bat or wisp, and you cannot cast spells or abilities for 45sec. Can be removed by furlbog form.
The Magic Eater food, fished up in sewers of Daldaran, sometimes gives debuff forms like a wasp, basilisk or whelp, and you cannot cast spells or abilities for 45sec. Can be removed by furlbog form.

I was able to use Dartol's rod in Stormwind on my Priest, so you CAN use it outside Ashenvale in 3.09.

The tooltip issue is being corrected to no longer give false information.

I found a way to be a Furbolg on a mount!

1: Do the Storm Peaks quest chain up until you turn into a valkyr upon entering Brunnhildar Village.

2: Use this rod while you ARE NOT a valkyr.

3: Enter the village and turn into a valkyr.

4: Mount up.

5: If done correctly you should retain the buff, now go away from the village far enough to go back to your original form and enjoy a mounted Furbolg for the next ~2 minutes.

Edit: Just a quick note. You will not be sitting on the mount, but rather be standing on it. Close enough though...
Edit2: For an odd look, do this to get on a flying mount and then do the loop trick (Turn off Num Lock and hold 0 and 8 at the same time on the number pad) but let go of 0 when you are completely upside-down. You'll be standing on the back of a flying mount while upside down.

Edit3: Seems to no longer work as of 3.1

Verified as of 4/13/09 you can get a new rod if you accidently accept last quest and abandon it. Also works outside of Ashenvale :) I put my faith in ya guys that I could get another and yep.

As for the moment, you can get this on your Horde charater aswell although it will cost you abit. Now with the new Faction Change Service avaible, you can just take your Alliance charater who has this item and turn it into a Horde. As Dartol's Rod is an quest item and it has no Horde equivalent it will stay in your inventory un-changed. I dont know if this is a bug or intended, but it worked for my friend.

Nevermind, this did not work for him again. Propably an bug, although he still has it.

Warning - if you do a race change, and you have a Dartol's Rod of Transformation in your inventory, even with no quest in your log associated with it, you will lose your rod!

The Blizzard FAQ only says:

Quests which are active in the character's log at the time of the Race Change will be cleared and all quest items associated with these quests will be destroyed.

This would lead you to believe that quest items not associated with a quest would remain. Unfortunately, this does not appear to be the case. I am still waiting on a GM to answer my ticket, so there is no telling if they will recover the item for me.

Warning to people about to do a race change. This item will remove on race change. I went from Gnome to Human, and had to repeat the quest chain. Most likely going horde, it will remove it.

if you do the very last part of quest after talking to the furbolg twice, he sends you back to Raene in astranaar with the boss furbolg's skull. If you turn in the skull you also lose the rod.

So I abandonned the last quest part and kept the rod. It's so much fun. It's unlimited use. The avatar isn't fully done so it doesn't do any of the emotes and if you take damage you change back but its still loads of fun. You can fight in form and stay that way till you take damage. Avatar does go into a fighting position and takes out his weapon though shield doesn't appear.

It is better for a caster who has good aggro management - you can stay in disguise and cast all your spells (the casting animations still happen at the fingertips, etc) for the entire fight and still look cool. And if ever you revert back to normal model you know you must have taken damage and it's time to change your tactics. For mages with Manashield or priests with PWShield you can hold firbolg form for 3 minutes. Pity you can't catch a griff or use your mount while shapeshifted - that would look awesome.

There no longer appears to be a limited number of charges associated with this item. It was originally limited to five uses.

It trasnforms you into a furblog for 3 minutes, but has only a one minute cooldown, so you can keep it up more-or-less continuously (if you try to re-cast it before it times out then it just turns the effect off but does not start the cooldown so you can just re-activate it at that point).

Casting time is about 2-2.5 seconds. You can cast it while moving.

You cannot ride a mount while shapeshifted.

You can stealth and the furblog will stealth, druids can switch to travel form and the furblog will run really fast. Basically behaves like the Ogre Suit in terms of how it interacts with other skills.

In its improved (no more limited charges) form, this is an incredibly cool item that may very well get nerfed (perhaps with a much longer cooldown) but at the moment it's way more fun than the quest that you would have to turn it in for. I had put mine in the bank with only one charge remaining and was about to throw it out until I noticed that the charges indicator was gone.

1) Pick up the first part of the quest from Raene Wolfrunner at the Astranaar Inn (36,49). She's the one with the wolves around her.
2) Go to island inside Lake Falathim (20,42). Redeem the quest and pick up the next part.
3) Kill the little Murlocs in and around the lake until you get the "Glowing Gem".
4) Return to Raene Wolfrunner at the Astranaar Inn (36,49). Redeem the quest and pick up the next part.
5) See Shael'dryn at the Moonwell in Ashenvale (53,46). Redeem the quest and pick up the next part.
6) Take the road east out of Ashenvale, and turn north at 59.62. When you reach (63,48) on the road, start looking for the Treants alongside the road. Kill every one you see until you get "The Wooden Key"
7) Go to 54,35 and open the box.
8) Return Shael'dryn at the Moonwell in Ashenvale (53,46). Redeem the quest and pick up the next part.
9) Go to 72,71 and kill the slimes until you see a "Rusty Chest" under one of their corpses. In the chest you'll find the Iron Pommel.
10) Return Shael'dryn at the Moonwell in Ashenvale (53,46). Redeem the quest. Wait for her do craft the Reconstructed Rod. Then pick up the next quest from Shael'dryn.
11) Go to 54,50, and follow the winding path upwards. At the top is a "Hidden Shrine". Right click it and pick up your Dartol's Rod of Transformation. There's no need to pick up the next part of the quest, and I'm not sure if doing so would cause you to lose the Rod.

If you abandon the quest the rod does NOT disappear. At least, it didn't disappear for me.

And they already changed this rod first. In the very beginning it had only 5 charges and you could use it while running. Then they removed the charges and you could still use it while running. Now you have to stand still before you can use it. It's pretty annoyin sometimes but oh well, this rod rocks.

As of 7/28/08, you DO lose the rod if you abandon the quest during the last step. However, all you have to do is go back to Raene and tell her you lost your rod. She will give you a new one, and you won't have to accept a new quest for it.

Telling her you lost the rod while it is in your bank doesn't work as it is a unique item. You have to abandon the quest on the last part of the chain, destroying the skull and the rod, before asking for a new one (probably so you can transform to get the quest from the uncorrupted furbolg again). You don't need to pick up the quest again to keep the rod.

i think they were planning on making it ashenvale only and either cancelled/delayed it, leaving only that as a warning.

still fun though, with all the new furbolg animations with WotLK it's better than ever.

If you use your Dartol's Rod of Transformation when you have the (de)buff to change you into a member of a different race/faction (see: Dimensional Ripper - Area 52), you CAN RANDOMLY CHANGE WHAT SKIN YOU GET! :D Don't like the Orc female you got switched to? (ew BTW) then get your trusty rod out, furbolg it up, wait about 10 seconds and click the furbolg buff of. Voil�! Sexy belf music video time in front of IF bank :)

OK: get the pieces, have the deer lady put them together, and she makes a horrible joke about "arcane" and "druid" which makes no sense and is not funny. She tells you to charge the rod. Charge your rod. Use the appropriate charging method for best results.

When you get Dartol's Rod of Transformation (after you charge your rod) DO NOTHING ELSE if you want to keep the rod & turn into a furlbog.

If you charged your rod too much, well, I guess you're gonna have some cleaning up to do.

I can confirm this still works outside of ashenvale. I just got it tonight. It took about 30 minutes on an epic mount. Definitely worth it. These were big pre-BC but I hardly ever see any Furbolgs running around anymore.

My guess is that the tooltip correction will remove the part where is says, "Usable only in Ashenvale."

I have had this on my toons well before BC. I remember when WotLK came out the tooltip said, "only usable in Ashenvale". I was in Borean Tundra and decided to try it. Guess what, I wasn't in Ashenvale and it worked.

Hence, the tooltip correction is probably removing that remark. Why would they go through the trouble of adding new animations to it to just nerf it? Nah, it will stay, and remain usable anywhere.

I miss being able to use it while moving though...
It's most fun to use on my mage. Cast mirror image, and you get 4 Furblogs!

Well, i did turn in this quest completely, and, feeling a little separation anxiety, turned into it one last time, and turned the quest in. I am not sure if it was that or just a glitch...but the rod did not do away! It is still in my bag, and i am soooooo happy. (I'm just a little afraid to log off.)

If you don't have a Rod (for whatever reason) but already finished the quest chain you can always go to Raene Wolfrunner in ashenvale and ask for a new one. She tells you how her scout found it abandoned in the forest and asks you to keep a better eye on it next time :P

I heard about this item from a friend. I got the rod and I quit the quest. Almost carry it around with me for fun. The other day we had like a train of 6 people in the furbolg form.

Pick it up from Raene Wolfrunner, a lvl 60 elite inside the Astranaar inn. She sends you to find Teronis. You will find his corpse on an isle on Lake Falathim, southwest of Maestra's Post. For the next quest you will have to kill some Murlocs from the same area to get the Glowing Gem (beware of murlocs running away lest you want to get a ton of aggro!) and turn in the gem and the journal from Teronis to Raene. She will send you to a dryad at a moonwell. The moonwell can be hard to find. From Astranaar, run east along the road. You will see a sort of river or lake to your left. From there run just a little bit more east, turn and run to the north. When you are close to the mountains, run east again and you'll find the moonwell. The dryad will give you the next quest. It involves killing Withered and Crazed ancients, lvl 26-28 treants north or Raynewood Retreat until you find a wooden key. When you have it run north on the road to Felwood and look to your left. When you see some ruins, go into them, look and you'll find the chest in which is the quest item. Go back to the dryad. The next part of the chain is less obvious. Run south, down the road to the Barrens while looking to the left. You'll see some lvl 20-21 oozes (Rotting Slimes). The oozes are not too dangerous but beware of lvl 27-28 Horde affiliated NPCs wandering around. You must kill the oozes and after a while, a chest will appear near the corpse of one of them. The chest is NOT a drop, instead it appears on the ground close to the dead ooze. Open the chest, you'll see some money, some crap and the quest item you need. Return to the dryad. Then, run to the east along the mountains that separate the moonwell from the rest of Ashenvale. At one point you will see a small path going up into the mountains. Follow it and you will come to the shrine you need. Accomplish the quest but don't get the following one if you just want the rod.

Everyone has the transformer now, since you can be a furbolg whenever you want. Unluckily, I did the quest months ago on my lvl 60 and now I can't get the item anymore =/

Easy to get, just takes some running here to there, nothing big. Killed some lowbies horde on my way, was fun. :P

there are no charges on this rod. its unlimited use. Glad they did that otherwise it would worthless to have.

Soloed with 23 Druid, and stopped the chain as soon as I got the rod. It's unlimited use, 3 min duration with 1 min cooldown, and it's more fun than a barrel of monkeys.

The rod is a reward from one of the quests in Raene's Cleansing. If you continue on with the quest chain, you lose the item, so I abandoned the quest and kept the staff. =) It turns you into a standard looking furbolg for 3 minutes, and has a 45 second cooldown. You can attack enemies while in the form, but revert back if you take damage. (You take out your weapon, but for some reason it dose'nt show the shield.) You can't Take a hippogryph or griffon while shapeshifted. Enjoy! =)

Where is the final part? I hope I don't have to go back in that barrow again. I killed all those undead druids once. East of the road does not help much, or am I really missing something in plain sight?

I got this rod as a lvl 21 Druid and it is AWESOME! Its like a whole nother form exept it lasts 3 min. but u can just go right back in it. Its cool u can use all your spells abilities I wouldve wanted an Undead with this see how Canabalizm looks like.Only thing that I wanted to see is that u wouldnt attract aggro from other Furlborgs with this on -_-. Cool anyways :D.

OK for all the NON believers out there I can CONFIRM that the Rod still works even after patch 3.3
I completed it today 01/01/10 up to recharging the rod after that just abandon the chain.

I can CONFIRM that Item Restoration works for this in classic.

If you destroy the item at least once, abandon the quest and pick it back up you can just restore the item once you're done with the chain and got you Glacial Spike.

I can confirm this rod works in Classic WoW. To keep the rod just don't accept the quest after 莱恩的净化 (the part where you get the rod from the 隐蔽的神龛). It does work outside of Ashenvale also.

As a Paladin or Priest(The casting effect of this toy is the yellow glowy) you can bait out interrupts in pvp with this item.

Confirming that you can finish this quest chain AND keep the item via the Item Restoration trick.
Working as of 30th Sept 2020.

To do it you need to:

Delete the 达图尔的变形魔棒 at least once before handing in the final quest 莱恩的净化.
Speak to 莱恩·狼行者, in the Inn of Astranaar, to obtain a new rod.
Hand in the final quest. (To 莱恩·狼行者)
Go through the Item Restoration process at https://us.battle.net/support/en/restoration/

I needed to close the game before the Item Restoration form would work, but your mileage may vary.
As soon as I logged back in, the rod was in my mailbox.

Please note that you cannot use this Item Restoration service more than once every 7 days. So make sure that you don't accidentally delete, DE, etc. anything important over the next 7 days if you choose to do this.

The alternative is that you abandon the quest sometime between first obtaining 达图尔的变形魔棒 during 莱恩的净化 and handing in the final quest 莱恩的净化.

Note: the delete item, and item restoration that seemingly worked in classic no longer works in classic tbc. I tried it, deleting the item before the last quest and then using item restoration, it never pops up in item restoration. I even tried contacting a GM who confirmed for me this item is no longer eligible for item restoration. So sadly I missed out on furbolg anytime 😭

The delete and restore trick does NOT work in Classic SoM! I made this mistake while questing and now can't get it back :(

I was worried I could no longer hold onto this based on the comments, but the truth was so simple that I had to laugh afterwards.

Everyone in the classic comments COMPLETELY MISSED the trick to keeping this rod without having to keep the quest in your log...THERE IS NO TRICK THANK GOODNESS!

I found out quickly (but still very fearfully) that by simply NOT accepting the Quest that "Hidden Shrine" gives you in the Raene's Cleansing
quest chain, you simply keep the rod in your bags after receiving it as a reward from the quest when you first find the shrine beforehand!

After Wrath prepatch finishing questline allows you to keep rod without any special tricks needed :) just tested
