I went through and stealthed around all three of the instances a bit, to see what I could get. There were five herb spawns in the steamvaults, and two of them were herbable by a solo stealther. The other three were unaccessable to anything less than a 5 man group.
The Slave Pens had 4 herb spawns that I could find before I ran into stealth detecting mobs, will need a small stealther group to acquire the other 3-4 throughout the rest of the zone. 3 of those 4 were herbable by a solo 70 stealther.
The underbog had 4 herb spawns up until the hydra boss, which means a 3-4 man group will be necessary to get any more out of the instance. Was able to herb all 4 spawns before then.
These spawns were fairly static over 3 resets of each instance.

I have found several of these from "skinning" Fungal Giants (and similar mobs) in Zangamarsh. Of course you must be an herbalist to have this ability. It's a good way to gather these, while also collecting plenty of Unidentified Plant Parts (
https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=24401
) for Cenarion Post rep, and many other miscellaneous herbs and vendor trash.

The Slave Pens can be farmed for Ancient Lichen by any level 70.
You can get 2-3 lichen nodes per reset, along with usually 1 node of Felweed, Ragveil, or Flame Cap.
The patrol paths are fairly simple and you can figure them out fairly quickly. You can go all the way from the first room, through the hallway, and into the next large room.
I can usually get ~20 lichen before I have used up my 5 instances and "have entered too many instances recently".
Good Luck.

Oh man this plant does really suck. Sell it early because the price will drop soon. Two months ago it was 20g stack and there were a lot. Now you just find it at 5g stack... and even though no one wants them. Useless pots with this...

As a warlock, I can solo the elite giants in Skettis. I highly suggest farming those; as they pretty much guaruntee motes of life and some good herbs. I farmed a primal and about 17 ancient lichen in maybe 10 minutes or less.

In SP in the first large area one of these keeps spawning on top of the big green area that I can't seem to get on top of. Anyone?

the video posted by itreehorn is great, found it very useful.
After doing these solo runs for about two hours, i'd like to add a few things to the posts already here
You WILL occasionally grab aggro, especially if u mine as well, the adamantite node is an aggro magnet, kind of difficult to get the timing down.
What i started doing, was running it naked, with all my equipment in the bank. That way, if died, i could rez at the graveyard, and fly back a lot faster than if i had had to run as a ghost. Also, it wouldnt have cost me anything in repairs. Just a thought, worked well for me.

sgibber3's comments are by far the most helpful. Soloing the giants is not too hard and as I was farming herbs for my epic flight form I not only scored all 10 ancient lichens but 10 dreaming glory and 10 fel blossom in 15min killing 4 or 5 giants.

If you level up only by doing instances you should end up with 5-6 stacks of Ancient Lichen before lvl 70. You'd also find it difficult to benefit from the said herb since nobody wants to buy it.

It's more than Underbog, this herb definatly seems to have a preference for dungeons - but can be found by herbalising fungal giants and the like too.
And usually drops those rusty ol' rings too!

As a 70 priest those are really easy farmed in slave pens...Dont need any group just run in and pick them:)

Actually you can solo farm these in slave pens. Dont matter what class you are as long as your lev 70 and watch out for the mobs aggro range. you can get roughly 20 in an hour just by going in and picking the herbs not near mobs and going back out to reset instance .x5
...fyi dont even bother trying to go thru the whole instance you will die, simply restet it after you have picked the first hallway and main room.

Go to Slave Pens normal, and you can get one or two at the first room, following the corridor (sometimes one here), and in the second big room (two or even three). Then get out and reset. You should be able to do this without taking any aggro from any mob.
Ignore the lichen that are near the packs, except if you are a mage: pull, frost nova, and if no one resists, blink into lichen, get lichen, invisibility. If you have pet, you could also use it to distract.
There is one crab pack left the corridor, where usually a lichen spawns. This pack will reset when you get back into the corridor. The crab pack just in front of the corridor next to the lake, where another lichen spawns, doesn't reset.
Edit: Usually you would ignore the packs as it's an unnecessary risk, but since you have a limit in entrances to an instance per time, it's better to maximize.

Stealth Farming for Ancient Lichen
(and sanguine hibiscus, and mining nodes too!)
I've had great success as a lvl 70 druid farming regular underbog for ancient lichen and sanguine hibiscus, and even mining nodes (100% adamantite so far). I'll point out my basic farming route below. It's mostly just being careful and using common-sense (i.e dont get aggro). Non-stealthers can use the first two steps with some success also.
The mobs are slightly higher level then slaves pens, so stealth helps get to some of the trickier nodes. I relize this doesn't help the non-stealthers, but I thought it might be useful for those of you who do. Just a couple general observations.
-----------------
1) If done properly, you can easily get 4-5 ancient lichen and also 4-5 sanguine hibiscus per run with no fighting at all. Unconfirmed, but I thought you can now only reset any instance 4 times an hour, not 5 anymore.
2) a typical run will usually take around 10-15min (so 4/hour is usually no prob).
3) At the beginning of UB, there are two sporewings which are both solo pulls. Easy enough to kill alone for any lvl 70 class, probably properly geared classes lower could also. These mobs have a high chance (around 40-50%) to drop sanguine hibiscus. Useful mostly for getting rep up with Sporregar (for transmute primal earth to primal water at revered). You could sell them on my server (sen'jin) for around 1g each also.
FARMING PATH
------------
(this is what i typically did and it worked for me, you can do whatever you like. The point is to save you time rather than creaping around everywhere looking for spawn points on your own)
NOTE: Steps 1 and 2 can be completed by any class since no stealthing is needed)
1) zone into UB, and solo pull the first mob, then the second after you kill the first. Usually you'll get at least 1 sanguine hibiscus from them.
2) there's usually ancient lichen just in the area where you just killed the 2nd of the two solo mobs. There's also a sanguine hibiscus node there too. I've noticed that i could pick this hibiscus node when i enter, and when im coming back at the end of the run, another will have respawned! this happens almost everytime actually. Also, if there isn't a hibiscus when you come it, usually its there at the end of your run.
3) from this point, there's no more single pulls you can do, so if you want more, you'll have to stealth. From here you'll have a group of three near you. You have the option of going to the right, but i usually dont see spawn points for lichen or hibiscus there. There is sometimes a spawn point near this group for something, so always good to check. Dont attack them though.
4) continuing past the first 3 group, you'll see to your left aroudn the corner a group of 3 standing near a lock-box which has pretty good drops (when i was in 5-man). The box randomly appears as locked or unlocked. Either way, you have to kill the three mobs near the box to get it as you can't open it in combat. (inconfirmed - you may actually be able to open it if you have aggro range reducing abilities, like the sporregar rep muck covered cape @ honored). I skip this, but one day i may try.
ANYWAY, you'll also see a couple of 3 mob sporebats. one pat has a circling patrol path, the other has a rather long one going from the mobs near the chest to the bog giant father back. Just make your way past both of these to the ramp leading up to the first boss. DON'T swim far away from the land. there's fish in the water which can see through stealth, but far enough away if you stick close to the land. It's easy to get to the ramp as 70, i've gotten really close to the pats without the them aggroing. Beware of the sanguine hibiscus that sometimes spawns near the water. The pat which i mentioned above that has a short patrol path is here. the pat returns way to quickly for the gathering timer to complete. Vanish may work though.
5) You should be near the bottom of the ramp leading to the first boss. If you're in game while you read this, you've probably already realized there's another 3 mob sporebat patrol going up and down the spiral ramp, and this should naturally be avoided. BEFORE you go up the ramp, start heading behind the bog giant near the ramp to the area behind the spiral ramp. This area is GREAT! There's almost always ancient lichen here, and sanguine hibiscus (two spawn points) and often an adamantite node on the side of the wall of the ramp. You can safely mine this without aggroing the sporebat pat that goes up it if you mine from max range, even if they are passing right in front of where the node is (and yes this is after a patch made it so mining would aggro close mobs). Anyway, just pick up whatever's back there, and continue around, avoiding the slow moving pat with a long patrol path. You'll see another bog lord which looks like he's almost blocking the way past him, but it's easy to stealth by him. Once past him, you'll notice you're again right at the bottom of the ramp (cause you just made a big circle going aroudn the bottom of this ramp)
6) Now go up the ramp, avoid the 3 mob pat (easy). At the top of the spiral, there is a hibiscus node. The patrol on the ramp doesn't go up this far, so you can safely unstealth and pick it without worry.
7) At this point you should be looking at the 1st boss and his two friends in front of him. No problem, just stealth past them all to the bridge, which should be to the left leading to the later parts of the instance. I've never seen any spawns for anything in the area where the 1st boss is.
8) Assuming your at the bridge, look for yet another patrol of 3 sporebats. You'll also see a stationary bog giant, and to your left a patrolling bog giant. There is almost always either a hibiscus here, or ancient lichen here. You have plenty of time to stealth to it, pick, and restealth before the sporewings return.
9) continue to make your way around the column? you're on. Go past the patrolling bog lord (very slow, and long path). You'll almost always have a lichen spawn here around halfway around, can't miss it, very easy to pick. In the same area, easy to spot also, is hibiscus.
10) Last step - keep going around to the stationary boglord (ok, he does sort of turn around, but his path is like 3-5 yards). There's sometimes a spawn point behind him, so its worth a check. It spawns pretty close to him, so be cautious when picking. Try to time it so you pick while he's a little further away. (rogues be prepared to vanish just in case).
That's it! you can't go any further because there are two guards blocking the doorway allowing you to get further into the instance, and they both can see through stealth. Just head back around that collumn? and jump down to the ledge below. It's a somewhat high jump and you'll lose stealth i think if you take too much damage, so try to jump in the water, but close to the land so you don't aggro the fish (again, which can see through stealth). I jump from above the mobs which stand around the chest as its on the way to the exit of the instance. Be sure to check for a respawn of sanguine hibiscus on the way out.
Good luck and happy hunting!

when u get ur flying mount go to skettis and kill the talonsworm forestragers(elite) there, theyre soloable by most classes if u know abit of kiting, theyre immune to nature dmg but u can stun, immobilize and slow them so its rather easy they drop some insane ammounts of herbs included ancient lichen.

I actually got a green from picking one in Sethekk Halls. Rest of the party saw I got the loot and was like "WTF? No roll?" and I was all "HERBY, biatch!"
It was great. You should have been there.

Went into slave pens solo as a 70 warrior.
To make sure you make a profit (since u wont be fighting mobs) take off gear that has durability to be safe.
I got 28 ancient lichen off my first 5 attempts and even a green ring with +25 nature resist from herbing.
After the 5th attempt... I felt like a pro... sussed out the agro range and the patrol patterns.
Def easier than trying to down the 72 elites in the Skettis and having horde backstab you mid fight.

You can also get Ancient Lichen from using Herbalism on the corpses of fungal giants in Zangarmarsh, but it is a very rare drop.

To gather
远古苔
you need Herbalism profession.
Ancient Lichen nodes can be found only in instances, namely Slave Pens, Underbog, Mana Tombs, Auchenai Crypts, Sethekk Halls, Shadow Labyrinth, and The Steamvault. Rarely, it can also be gathered from dead fungal giants, treants and ancients.
