Talk to Riku the Hozen to turn in the first quest and grab the follow up The Case of the Fur-Getting Wikket.

I can't pick up Gizmo, every time I try it says "Failed" and he's running away. Ffs why we are even paying with real money for this neverending bugged game?

Go to PVP Warmode. No people there easy to catch and it wont run away. If too many people try it will keep running away. You must be alone to do this.

even with walk turned on, Gizmo would run away as i started to pick him up. i found that going into stealth helps

Okay - i take it back, but i'm leaving it just in case - i had to chase him into a wall where people weren't and finally got him.

It seems that you have to dismiss your companion pet, otherwise you cannot capture Gizmo.

This is an hypothesis. But the facts are:

I managed to complete the catch cast 3 times and… nothing happened.
After dismissing my pet, my first completed catch cast bar completed the quest.

Tips to get catch the ever-running raccoon:

- Turn on War Mode. This can be done in your capital city, Valdrakken or Dornogal, from your talents panel. This will make the place (almost) empty, less people to scare him off.

- Turn on walking mode. Default hotkey is / on your numpad.

- If he keeps running away anyway even if no one's bothering him, just wait at one of the places he usually stops. He'll eventually stop right next to you and you'll be able to catch him then.

If you are on War Mode, maybe don't attack opposite faction players on sight, they're probably just trying to get the quest done.

Anyone else having trouble getting the instructions from Sully? He just comments on the party. I've dropped and reacquired the quest twice already. Yes, I talked to Breanna and chose 'raccoon'.

Best Tips to Catch Gizmo

Other players are NOT your friends while trying to finish this quest. Even if the pet stops within range of where you are standing, if others are around, it will "bug out" as others try to click him...or run away.

Reduce the number of other players around you. Use warmode or even better, have a friend group with you on a low-pop role-playing realm.
After I was able to get away from others, I approached Gizmo using an invisibility potion. I stopped moving as soon as I could range the pet, then clicked on him to loot him. Even though my invisibility dropped when I clicked on him, he did not run away since I wasn't moving.

This is what worked for me (after sitting there for 30-45 mins. to no avail).

- go back to org, turn warmode on.
- fly out to the location again.
- fly back, port back to org.
- turn warmode off.
- fly from jade forest entry point BACK to the place.
- when I got there, NOBODY was there.

I was easily able to capture him at that point.

This is a bizarre happenstance. I was absolutely alone with Warmode off. I went to the gravesite and Gizmo appeared and ran away. I then hit / and walked to Gizmo. I right-clicked him, and suddenly he disappeared and I was surrounded by hundreds of other players. I did not get Gizmo.

It seems impossible to get with so many other players.

Do yourself a favor and get a friend with an alt on a low-pop realm to group up as leader to do this if you aren't already doing it on a low-pop realm. Anyone running, hunter pets out, people mounting up around you - all make the wretched raccoon keep running. If you stand by the panda just down from the flight path, it will eventually stop by you, but it takes a few seconds to catch even then.

The Raccoon is in Serpents Overlook/ There is tombstone near a tree and you use the torch to get the Raccoon to appear then you have try and catch him. I saw someone comment in game walk not run. Took three failed attempts before I caught him.

As a mage, I used Invisibility then just walked up to Gizmo and picked him up. If you’re not a mage or a rogue, try a potion - it literally took me 2 seconds to nab him this way.

During Mists of Pandaria campaign in The Jade Forest we meet the characters involved in this quest:

As an Alliance character, during SI:7 Report: Fire From the Sky you play as Sully "The Pickle" McLeary, covered by sniper Amber Kearnen, and meet the raccoons Gizmo, who is soon shot dead, and Socks.
As an Horde character, during Scouting Report: On the Right Track you play as Shademaster Kiryn, covered by sniper Shokia, who marks Harmless Raccoon to be shot dead.

Sully thinks it was Amber who shot Gizmo, while part of the community considered that it was actually Shokia. The fact that Harmless Raccoon title "Never hurt anyone" and Gizmo the Pure description "In life, Gizmo never hurt a soul" are so similar can be interpreted as a comfirmation of this theory.

Now, in my opinion, this quest was so poorly written or well thought that ended being quite bizarre. Think it from the perspective of an Alliance player: we've been requested by Shokia's teammates, Shademaster Kiryn and Riko, to find them a pet and the quest leads us to ask Sully "The Pickle" McLeary for directions on where he buried his pets, just to raise Gizmo as undead (because now apparently now Torch of Pyrreth has this power...), give it to the Horde members who participated on its death (or even if not), in front of its former owner crying... just to have the poor raccoon abandoned 5 minutes later. I'm having a hard time trying to understand the motivation or logic of of any of the characters involved, but to add insult to injury, Sully has been one of the NPCs that appeared in the Trading Post during Dragonflight where he tries to pick a new pet but he's unable because he still misses Socks, which makes me particularly uncomfortable.

Every attempt to catch him resets the catching bar in the middle, and I'm getting error message "Failed" together with "out of range", even if I'm standing straight on the pet. After few such failed attempts the pet is running away.

EDIT: I think I understood the problem. The event seems buggy, and we see the pet not at the same place where server sees it. This is why you can see groups of people in different places, and all these people are doing catching movements by their hands, while you do not see the pet there. However, there are rare cases when the visible pet location is identical to the server's pet location. In order to "farm" such moments, I followed the pet and tried to catch it all the time. Finally I caught the moment when the pet stopped for enough time, and the catching bar successfully reached the end; probably because at this moment the visible and server's location became identical. This is how I got the pet. And I did not enable "walking mode", otherwise it would be impossible to follow it.

Stand where no one is standing; Raccoon never stops there
Turn War mode on; Players attack

Toggle walk mode did nothing.
Standing still did nothing.
Chasing did nothing.

I'll come back when this gets patched, waste of time.

OMFG THIS IS A TEST IN PATIENCE. After you summon Gizmo, WALK don't run, it'll scare him for EVERYONE not just you. Best bet is to pick one of the spots he goes back to frequently and just stand there, try to catch him next time he comes back. Took me nearly 30 min, but i FINALLY caught him. @.@

War Mode or not - the dude does the same ^&*! either way. You have to be in the direction of looking at him to even be able to attempt picking him up (at least for me). I've seen people show up and get it in first few tries and others like me who had to sit for as Iong as I did. Also noticed that he does respawn after some time but spawns back at the grave quickly after - in case you're like me who had a raid marker and it disappears.

How I got him was I just stood at a spot where'd often run to and just kept trying and eventually got it.

I also found that when I flew away from the area all my input became lagged until I zoned out.

Forget war mode, forget walk. Just chase him until he runs into the building at the top of the second (middle) stair level and you can catch him there.

This quest is pretty buggy. Clicking on Gizmo constantly fails right away even though he hasn't moved. Tried many time in many locations and had the same issue. I'll come back to this.

Whoever at Blizzard decided it would be fun to chase a racoon around, but not let the cast bar finish at 90% deserves a special place.

If you've made it to Serpent's Heart with 60% completion, you're on the right path. If you haven't gotten 60%, exhaust the dialogue of every NPC associated with this quest: Riko, Kiryn, Breanni and Sully. Do not proceed before you've made the 60% mark; the quest has been reported to bug.
- Go to Serpent's Overlook and use the Torch of Pyrreth at a graveyard shaded by an orange tree. Serpent's Overlook will be on raised hills and has a flightpath assigned to it.
- Gizmo will spawn and begin to run. Patiently pursue and continue to follow him; do not attempt to catch him as he will surge forward with every attempt. He will slide down a path and then abruptly go back up. Don't panic. Follow as normal.
- He stopped for me about thirty seconds into the chase and I was able to pick him up with ease.

One thing that helps actually catching Gizmo is to have an "Interact with Target" hotkey turned on under Settings > Controls. When the little hand icon shows up over Gizmo's head, hit that key and you'll start doing the action.

Using an invis potion seemed to help. I used "Potion of the Hushed Zephr" (found in Dragonflight) to get close to Gizmo and it seemed to work out.

Shortly before finalizing my blood pact with Satan to get assistance with finally complete this bulls#!7 buggy quest, I decided to hearth and turn on war mode.

Do that. Go do it right now. Buy a 1 star Hushed Zephyr potion, let the little bastard sit still, and walk up to him while invisible in War Mode. First try once I got back to the area in War Mode. maybe 10 seconds total.

Stop reading this comment. Go do it.

Couple tips:

1) It might help you to use a keybinding to capture gizmo.
Go to Options > Keybinding > Targeting > Interact with Target (should be "F" by default)
You'll need to click gizmo initially however, using the keybinding might help as you capture him as you chase him around.
ALSO, make sure you're facing him when you try to capture him.

2) Gizmo the Pure was not instantly mailed to me took about 5 minutes or so.
Thought I would mention it since I didn't see mention of it anywhere else.

Where do you go once you get into Serpent's heart? I went west, tried to count paces, flew all around and I cant find where to spawn the thinig.

For those not able to figure out 10 paces east and 40 south ( like me, I flew around for ages), here are the coords to the grave in the Jade Forest: /way 43.34, 68.76
I'm assuming you still have to fly to the bridge and to the path to the left first for the game to register you are on the right path. Then you can fly up to the cluster of housing south of the bridge, thats overlooking the orchard.

Note: Warmode is a BIG time saver. I recommend you do that. Then toggle slow walk, back up into a spot he stops at and wait. GL. The cast can bug out at 90% for no reason.

Hello secret-sleuthing friends!

Gizmo can easily be captured via entering War Mode:

You must enter War Mode and return to the area, as Gizmo will be prompted to move if there are any players nearby moving too quickly.
Once you are there, toggle Walk Mode / RP Walk and tap the forward movement key to inch yourself bit by bit towards Gizmo's location after they have stopped moving.
When at the maximum range, click on Gizmo or use the Interact key and you should capture them.

If you continue to have issues, try using a Potion of the Hushed Zephyr as well. Hope this helps!

I just chased Gizmo constantly (no walking), constantly clicking him, and after about 45 seconds of doing this, he just stopped and let me pick him up.

My Partner was getting a "No Target found" Error and could not spawn gizmo, she had not done any of the quests in the zone so she did all the quest relating to the serpent's heart area and once she finished the quest where the sha disappears she was able to summon gizmo.

If you're a Hunter, use the Camouflage talent. I spent 35 Minutes trying to grab him, I changed one of my talents to the camouflage talent, clicked the talent, walked up to him and immediately got him on the first try.

Golly how frustrating. I stopped chasing him after a while. I worked with a bunch of others on my server doing this quest. I hope this helps and they fix it soon, because this part of the quest is not fun.

Watched his dot on the mini map and we all stood still in this spot where Gizmo finally stops for a while: /way The Jade Forest 43.15, 68.20
I used camouflage and toggled walk to approach him. He stayed in the same spot as long as people didn't move.
Seemed like our attempts to catch him were interrupting each other. It kept saying, "failed" and "out of range."
We took turns trying to catch him and were able to get him.

Seriously. Use War Mode.

I spent almost 30 minutes trying to catch him without war mode with people all around.

Tried War Mode and I was alone, grabbed him immediately.

Logged in 7 in the morning and did this quest, no problems! I was alone and could walk up to the pet and catch him right away, no chasing around. Didn't use any warmode or change of walking style, those things do no affect at all.

I don't see this mentioned anywhere but after you finish the quest you get sent a message from Riko in the mail with Gizmo the Pure attached for your pet collection.
Apparently Riko finds him stinky :(

Well my Draenei priest is not going to raise a poor deceased pet raccoon from the grave to give it to some rando undead stranger and her monkey! There should really be some actual role-playing options on these...

Do I lose access to the later ones if I don't finish this one? Can I do this one on my unholy cow that has no problem with such sacrilege, without redoing all the previous ones?

This is literally one of the worst quests I have had the displeasure of doing in my entire experience of playing WoW. Have any of you played Fallout 76? Ever done the quest where you literally wait in line at the DMV? I would rather do that than catch some raccoon.

This quest SUCKS. I feel that bliz needs to make it phased... so that no matter how many ppl are in the area Gizmo ONLY reacts to YOU. Theres easily over 20 ppl where im trying to do it and he will NOT STOP RUNNING! Im not going into WM cause f pvp. Just fix it!

I don't know if this is a reference but the quest name reminded me of the classic 1988 C.O.P.S. (Central Organization of Police Specialists) cartoon.
Every episode's title would start with "The case of..." The show has one of the coolest intro's ever. Here's a link to a whole playlist with pretty much every episode.
