Upon logging into the game you'll get a little npc pop up near you to give the pre-quest for this. If you're missing yours, just hop a few zones.

Bought the pre-order and logged in.
Got the mount and armor set in the collections window, but no one to give the quest.

Flew from Valdrakken to Thaldraszus and a little pet drake named "Herald Flaps <Valdrakken Messenger>" was flying after me - also showed up on the minimap. It gives the "Lightning Strikes" quest. Turn it in to the NPC in Waking Shores then the NPC will give you "The Storm Race Tour" quest.

Upon completion of the races/quest, you'll get "Ensemble: Thundering Stormrider's Attire" and some gold.

For each race, talk to the Bronze Timekeeper and select the Storm Race option. It will automatically put you on the storm gryphon mount.

Note: You get a new ability that REPLACES Whirling Surge. The new ability is "Lightning Rush" - 30 second cooldown. "Activate to engage a sustained boost for 5 sec. Only available at 10 stacks of Static Charge. Replaces Whirling Surge". Spell ID: 418592.

You get stacks by flying close to walls. Use it when you have a good straight-distance line because you won't be able to turn well after you activate it. Also, as you're flying through the rings, you may see a lightning orb - when you pick it up, it resets the cooldown on Lightning Rush. 1st stack gives you a 4 second buff, then each stack refreshes back to 4 seconds, up to a max of 10 stacks. If you're not flying close to a wall, the stacks can fall off!

Timers are a little tight - figuring out when to use lightning rush (because you can't turn well for a few seconds after activation and stacks can fall off) will be the key to completing the races with Gold.

Doozy of some timers. Race in Azure Span is 120 seconds for gold. Rest were average of 82 or so. Took me about an hour. Good luck out there.

Even though I done this in around 20 minutes, I know many of you are going to find it hard, especially Azure Plains because of the 2 minute timer. It's all about where you use your new ability to ensure you get as far as you can before needing to turn, or miss your turn.

One thing I've noticed with the new ability Lightning Rush, is that I'll lose the ability to turn or change directions for a few seconds after using it. I don't know if anyone else has had this issue (I'm guessing it's just a bug), but it definitely messed me up in a couple of the races. Ultimately, I just made sure to only use it when I could see that I'd be flying pretty straight to the next checkpoint.

Here's a quick function to check achievement progress.
"Gold 0" means you didn't get gold whereas "Gold 1" means you did it.

I had trouble with Vakthros Ascent (Azure Span race) but soon realised I was focusing on using Lightning Rush on CD/ASAP (cos it's FUN! :D ) which just wasn't working for this race.
I was able to get race time of 116 secs, down from a consistent ~125sec.
Use Lightning Rush in the first long straight section near the beginning of the race (you should fairly easily be able to get the 10 stacks required by the time you reach the turn heading into the first big straight) . Surge occasionally on the next downward section and maintain momentum around the turns at the bottom . Build up some vigor in the downward section near the towers/bridge, and focus on using surge forward while maintaining 10 stacks ready to use Lightning Rush when you hit the straight section across the frozen lake at the top of the ascent. After that surge forward to the end!

These races are extremely easy with Lightning Rush. I was able to complete them each in one attempt.

Purchasing at least the Heroic Edition of the The War Within expansion also unlocks the Storm Rider's challenge! Heroic Edition: Algarian Stormrider This challenge revamps a few Dragonriding races in the Dragon Isles, making the race tracks slightly different and more fitting for the Algarian Stormrider new mechanic and ability.

To start the questline that leads to the Storm Rider challenge, mount on your Algarian Stormrider and fly around with it a bit, until you notice Herald Flaps approaching you. Herald Flaps will give you the quest Lightning Strikes, which requires you to go to the Skytop Observatory in the Waking Shores.

Upon arriving there and turning the quest into Lord Andestrasz, he will give you a new quest, The Storm Race Tour - This quest has you complete 6 Dragon Isles races on the newest Storm Rider difficulty! These races involve slightly altered courses, including many portions close to walls or mountains and big strips of straight ring objectives, perfect to use Lightning Rush on.

You can complete All 6 Storm Rider Gold Dragon Races following this video guide.

Hardest one for me by FAR was the Vakthros Ascent.

Skyward Ascent and Surge Forward into the 1st ring and glide into the 2nd ring. After you fly through the 2nd ring immediately hit Skyward Ascent to fly into the 3rd and 4th ring with the wind buff. Surge Forward into 5th ring while trying to stay as close to the rock wall as possible. Surge Forward again into the 6th ring while staying as close to the rock wall as possible. Your Lightning Rush ability should be charged up by now. Use that to hit the 7th, 8th, and 9th ring right before you enter the tunnel.

I continued to use surge forwards as needed until I got past the towers and small city. After you pass under a small bridge (22nd ring) and go through the ring directly in front of you (23rd ring), use your Lightning Rush ability again. This will carry you for about 5 rings. Once you turn right around a cliff and see the ring that has the wind in it (28th ring) hit Skyward Ascent immediately after that ring to get some speed back. Surge Forward once or twice. By now Lightning Rush should be off CD around the 33rd ring (before the wind buff ring). Use Lightning Rush to boost you into the wind buff get you up the hill. This should carry you all the way up to the top of the mountain and into the flat snowy area in the center.

NOW you should have all 6 your vigor filled up. Once you curve right around the small mountain (where the Arcane Devourer rare spawns inside of a tower). you should be good to Surge Forward at least once per ring you pass through. This strat got me the gold time!

Personally, I've found cruising through dragon riding races in first person with the camera zoomed all the way in makes it way smoother for me. Call me weird, but it works like a charm.

Now, not every race requires you to spam Lightning Rush, but once you get the hang of the track, you'll know exactly when and where to unleash it for maximum speed. It's all about mastering those angles and spots.

Here's a pro tip: Treat every failed attempt as a practice round. Always keep those abilities in play. Surge when you're charging forward, pop Ascent when you're climbing, and reserve Lightning Rush for those long stretches. Just stay cool, and trust me, you'll nail it in no time.

The Crystal Circuit also has a ring close to the end that looks like the stopping point because the ring is right behind a raise in the land. You might mistake it for the finish and hurt your run.

If you are frustrated that you keep completing courses but your progress on the quest is reset, you need to make sure you are picking the 'storm' option for the race at the bottom of the list. If you do the races on other difficulties, it will temporarily mark it as complete but then reset your quest progress.

Why oh why these titles are always like this?

Why not "Stormrider <Name>" but in this format?

Also, as the mog sets go, this should have been the first Bronze or Silver level title, Gold level should be:
"Thundering Stormrider <Name>"

Same goes with Dragonrider, Dragon Racer and even Maw Walker and other similar titles too...
Also, we still don't have Blood Knight or Dark Ranger...

Please, send me your Rewards Designer Lead or someone with a logical explanation, why are you doing this, really?

Any tips for getting the quest again? Never completed it initially but the quest is gone from my quest log. Talked with Herald Flaps and have no option to retrieve the quest again?

If you are trying to find him after TWW launch, and can't find him where the quest marker sends you to turn-in the quest (at Skytop Observatory), go to where you found him to pick up the quest (Ohn'ahran Plains, Rusza'thar Reach 84,38).
