So this tutorial at least when I completed it was fairly useless because of the number of people around and how the phasing with everything was working. But the process for the digs are:

Speak to Roska, this will place a marker inside the quest area that has a small column of smoke/dust "Disturbed Earth".
Go there and use your totem (it'll be on your quest list or in your inventory) to place your totem and then click on it in the open world to empower the elemental.
Now there will be three things you can interact with: 1) The Totem and 2) some competing elemental objects in the world. These two will move the elemental balance bar.
3 is a pile of rubble with a 0-100% gauge above it, you need to click on this whenever the elemental balance is in range in order to dig.

In general, once you get to the actual dig, click your totem to start the elemental bar moving to one end and click the rubble once it's available. Your character will continue to dig away as long as they can so you don't need to click multiple times. If you're lucky you won't have to bother interacting with anything else or balancing the bar. Completing it with other people around still seems like it can cause issues so sometimes you may have to fly away or even abandon and retake the quest to continue.

Sometimes when empowering your elemental a mob will spawn rather than a dig site starting, just kill it and move to the next spot you can find in the quest area.
You can also occasionally find "Just a Rock" which will eventually get you an achievement for finding 10 of them.

I didn't even get this quest, I only got The Big Dig.

It seems like the questline is heavily bugged at the moment, but I got it done with some messing around with it. When you get to the water section you're supposed to get a heat management bar to balance between hot (using totem) and cold (walk quickly through the water so it makes a big splash). If you can maintain the balance long enough, the item emerges for you to dig it up.

The final phase of this quest has a similar situation, but the water only appears when the first stage is complete - by using your fire elemental via the totem to activate the earthquake area. After that you should get another bar to balance out before the chest emerges to dig/activate. If the chest gets outside of the middle section of the heat bar for too long it will no longer be usable but balancing it back out let me continue digging. I did get fire around the outside of my screen as the bar neared the far end and the NPC said to be careful to not let it burn up, which makes me assume it's supposed to force you to start all over again if it gets too hot, but who's to say for sure. I did not want to test that theory and potentially further break the quest

If the bar does not show up, it may be helpful to reset UI or temporarily disable UI addons. Of all things, using the technoscrying goggles did some kind of UI refresh and going into scrying mode also made the elemental bar appear in my UI, despite fiddling around for several minutes with no luck. Hoping a patch will get this quest working smoother. Best of luck all

In case this helps others.

Once I found the old notebook and had the 3 waters around it, I tried forcing making the bar appear that you need to reference to complete this quest. After reloading the UI, flying in and out, I finally went into the build and walked away from the game for about 10 minutes. When I came back the bar with Water (left) and Fire (Right) had appeared and I could see a 0% bar over the dig location.

On the next quest part there is a swirl of dirt. I had the bar but no water. This time I walked away. The bar disappeared and when I came back to the swirling dirt it was still gone! I walked away again the Dream Surge hit and both the bar and the water appeared. This leads me to believe that the issue may be related to the Dream event in the area. Especially since I waited on the first part that glitched and it seemed to fix itself as well. Maybe it is only interactable during specific dream event phases.

Description

So, you want to learn how to excavate artifacts? You came to the right orc! Turns out being able to shape the earth is useful when you're trying to get stuff out of the ground. And given how much the elements affect our work, it helps having an elemental to lend a hand. But you don't have to be a shaman to master excavation. I've got the elements covered. I'll just walk you through the detail work.
