The Trap Rune provided for this quest is incredibly useful for this entire area - so much so, that I avoided turning it in until I had completed all other quests around there.

Using it plants a trap rune on the ground that is instantly active; any humanoid/beast mob in the Athenaeum that steps on it triggers it, stunning ALL mobs in a fairly large radius; then exploding for massive damage on those mobs (usually killing them or almost killing them). As such, you can round up a bunch of mobs, and plant the rune as they are converging.

A few notes:
The rune DOES NOT work for some mobs, including the Spell Seeker Constructs and the Elite named mob Commander Domitille. It will work for most standard humanoids and manasabers.
The trigger area for the runes is fairly precise - you have to kite a mob/mobs right over the center to trigger it.

Once triggered, mobs are stunned/damaged in a fairly large radius around the trap.

The rune has a 10 second cooldown. That being said, you can lay multiple traps on the ground, once every 10 seconds.
At present, the mobs killed this way CAN be looted, making this a decent way to get a bunch of Ancient Mana.
As aforementioned, the traps won't always kill the mobs completely when triggered - especially when they loosely spread around the trap when it triggers. They may need a little extra AoE to be killed, so be prepared for survivors!

Not a very well set up quest. The trap works sometimes, other times it does not. Seems like when you are lower health it really starts to screw up and not do anything.

Another awesomely &*!@ing retarded quest design. Get swarmed by mobs that the trap rune does not help against. Die, rez, repeat.

I came across this quest today, and it's pretty awesome as a Discipline priest.

I noticed that as long as I had Atonement applied to myself, whenever I used the run to kill a bunch of mobs my health bar would shoot all the way back up to green.

I ended up using it as a bit of a healing CD while fighting Domitille; every time an add ran up it was an opportunity to plant a rune and get an extra heal. ^.^

If the trap arcane-explosion icon bugs out and disappears from your main screen, you can find and use the Trap Rune in your bags directly.

Trap Rune places a trap on the ground, mobs that kited into it, will be stunned and killed, so you have to find groups of mobs across the stronghold and pull them into the trap. There're three portals near Lothrius's hideout, that periodically spawn big group of guards, they also count for quest.

As many have said this is another hugely buggy quest.

I think it's supposed to be really easy and the trap is supposed to be hugely helpful. Indeed, when it does work it just stuns all the mobs around you and kills them.

However, sometimes it stuns them and does no damage at all. Sometimes it doesn't stun them at all and of course does no damage (i.e. does nothing). Sometimes it stuns them, kills some and only weakens others.

Even though it's referred to as a "trap" they don't seem to have to cross it. Not sure if you crossing it helps.

Really no rhyme nor reason to this. I've done this on several toons and when it works it's awesome, when it doesn't you better have CD's ready because you're likely to die.

I found that the rune trap worked pretty well as of 3/27/2017. I was able to kill the packs of mobs around the items for the Precious Little Left quest and also the Stop the Spell Seekers quest. Proc Pally. Just ride to the locations and set the trap and use some AOE. They all die pretty fast.

Update: as of 7.2/time of this writing, this quest is a no-brainer.
I just used the Trap Rune twice (in a large pat group) and completed the quest.

No fuss, no muss, eazy peazy.

The problem with the Trap Rune is that sometimes it works well (100% kill rate), sometimes reasonably well and sometimes not at all. So you never know what's going to happen. Not a problem for self-healing classes with strong AOE capability but even then you'll be picking smaller groups in case the thing doesn't work. I have noticed that some quests in Legion seem to have a random element such that one or more of your class mechanics are disabled for that quest alone, unfortunately usually when the objective is an elite or some other OP bad guy. Maybe this is part of that same design concept except in this case the random disabling works through the Trap Rune.

I read all the comments here, about how buggy the quest was, that's not working properly etc.

As of this patch it seems to work pretty well but there's also something very interesting about it.

By using the Trap Rune you can efficiently farm the area without effort. The item and quest mechanics don't work as the other "mass killing" ones in the game meaning that you can loot specific mobs even if you one-shot them!

You have to target only the stationery mobs, not the ones running around. Flying helps a lot but it isn't necessary, as the item has only 10 secs cooldown so you can pretty much one-shot everything. Only the Spell Seeker Construct are not affected (and rares/elites of course). In 5 minutes of farming you'll know which ones drop loot and can be farmed this way.
The damage from the 'explosion' that is triggered 2 seconds after a mob steps on the trap stacks, so gather 3+ to be sure they all die instantly.

In 10 minutes I reached my Ancient Mana cap, picked up a Brief History of the Aeons plus some greens and junk/gold.

Surely, you can do it while on The Battle Rages On which is pretty much the same quest, but the item disappears after 50 kills.

Jus ran through this and it seems to be still as 'buggy' as everyone says. Only works on certain mobs and doesn't do much other than stun them briefly. Patch 8.1.0, level 111 Shaman if it matters.

Right now, playing on a lvl 120, the trap is not killing anything. I remember it working great for other toons.

You don't have to use the trap to kill Nightborne for this quest. You can just kill 50 of them with you common attack spell.

Randomly appeared on my Suramar map as an exclamation mark even though I'm 100% sure I have completed it on that char, and the last quest of the chain is returned as completed with the quest completion script. Lothrius Mooncaller doesn't even seem to be at the location in order to pick up the quest, but the exclamation mark still appears on the map.

The same is true for the Stop the Spell Seekers quest. My guess it that this might be bugged for some reason after the Warbands feature was added.
