The lava lake referenced in the quest is out the southern entrance to the garrison, just down the road a few feet on the right.

I don't know if it's intended, but I was able to pick up this quest without leveling my fishing to 700, simply by putting the lure from Nat's hat on my pole and equipping it.

I experimented, and simply having the hat on didn't do it, so I don't think it's specifically related.

Maybe someone without the hat and Nat rep could try to see if it is simply the lure tricking the quest into thinking your skill is high enough.

Quest didn't become available for me until I had a rank 3 fishing shack. I already had 700 fishing at that point. I just fished up the Molten Catfish at the Circle of Blood (not from a pool)

17 casts at 1005 skill. Based on the other posts here, fishing skill doesn't seem to have an effect on the chance, though chances are after getting Draenor Angler you're at least 700 skill.

6 Casts in lava pool right out front Garrison, fishing level 730. You have to have Level 3 Fishing shack and 700 fishing to trigger quest.

I think you're able to catch this faster with a higher fishing level. I'm capped at 700 but equipped Nat's Lucky Fishing Pole (+25), Hightfish Cap (+100), Boots of the Bay (+15), and a Worm Supreme Lure (+200). So my fishing is 1040. I got it in three casts.

It took me 5 casts to catch it, right out side of garrison, skill 700. As i can see from other posts, it is all about luck, you may catch it on 1st throw, or on 20th, but no meter, point is, it is catchable in garrison area.

This one showed up for me while fishing by my level 3 shack that I got with another toons chieve. I was only 612 fishing and waited until my lure ran out to pick up the quest. It then said I wasn't eligible. I attached a lure taking me over 700 and it let me take the quest. Caught the trout no worries.

This quest is accomplished in Frostfire Ridge--NOT in Frostwall. You can fish in the lava pool just outside the southeast gate, but make you're far enough away from the entrance so as not to be in Frostwall (check your map).

You can fish all day at the lava pool in Frostwall (don't ask me how I know) and still can't catch the molten catfish. I moved a hundred yards around to the other side and caught it in four casts...

I couldn't find the answer to my problem...If any of you are like me and used different toons to finish up your Draenor Angler, some of your guys would have made it to 700 skill points. Remember you need to have a fishing skill of 700 or above to obtain the quest. This could mean equipping your fishing rod to give an additional 100 skill or even using your Sharpened Fish Hook or Worm Supreme. Either way, before the quest shows up you must have that skill point but you do not need to have Draenor Fisherman.

Edit: Added Worm Supreme since it gives you 200 skill.

A good spot for Alliance is the small lake southeast of the garrison. It is very close by.

Was able to pick my quest up with the following stats:

- 603 in raw fishing skill
- Level 3 fishing shack
- Had the 100 of each enormous fish in Draenor

I caught the Molten Catfish in the pools outside of the garrison with no lure attached, did not fish in the schools and took me about 16 attempts.

I caught the molten catfish after a few catches with the worm supreme and my fishing pole and hat. I caught it right out in front of the garrison in the lava lake that has the fire ammonite pool. No problems, hope this helps

A little advice for anyone wanting to complete this quest:

Don't fish at the lava pools to the southwest of the Garrison (Horde)

I just spent 20+ minutes (I used my fishing hat twice) with a skill of 810 and didn't see any sign of the catfish. I was in the correct area (highlighted blue) and outside of the garrison (according to the map).

I got fed up and moved to the lava pools to the north of the garrison. I got the catfish on the third try. Something to think about...

I completed this quest post-6.2, well after the Frostwall Shipyard was put into the game.

After reading comments, I found that I wasn’t having any luck finding the Molten Catfish in the lava south of my garrison. The game recognized that I was either located in my garrison, or in the Frostwall Shipyard—but neither said I was out of the garrison limits because of the shipyard phasing.

However, I was able to maneuver around those lava pools to where I would be located in The Burning Glacier. I cast my line, and picked up the catfish instantly (fishing 934, with a Bone Fishing Pole and a Worm Supreme).

If you are using a lure like Day-Old Darkmoon Doughnut to get to 700 fishing, you'll need to have it when you talk to Nat too, and for followups after doing the lunkers, so stock up.

6.2.2 -- 700 Skill Level, No Fishing Rod, No Lures, No Fishing Equipment.

146 Pool Casts = No Catfish
4 Non-Pool Casts = Catfish

Haven't seen anybody say NOT to fish for him in pools, but I fished strictly in pools for about 35 minutes before just throwing the line out anywhere that was bubbling and red. Could always be the RNG gods playing tricks on me.

150+ Casts in Fire Ammonite pools, no catfish.
Maybe 10 casts at best in just regular lava and got the catfish.

Do not fish from Fire Ammonite Schools, i cast over a 100 times in those with a 960 fishing skill and didn't catch it. Later, after i contacted blizz, i got my Molten Catfish in 5 casts from the normal lava.

I went to the side of the Garrison right outside the wall and fished the lava (both in and out of the pools) for about 2 hours and nothing. After getting fed up I moved to the front of the Garrison near that monument thingie where people drop Bling 5000...

Got it in 2 casts (regular lava casts).

Cought the fish infront of garrison on 7th try. Used Jeweled Fishing Pole and Worm Supreme .

Before that I wasted 20 minutes of my time between garrison and shipyard, you HAVE to be in Frostfire Ridge. You need lvl 3 fishing shack for this quest.

Note that this page is for the Horde's Luring Nat in Frostfire Ridge. Alliance's Luring Nat is in Shadowmoon Valley. Any water in those zones work, except in the garrison.

It typically takes 15-30 casts (though you could be unusually lucky or unlucky), doesn't matter whether you fish in a pool or not, and lures or other fishing skill enhancements don't seem to affect that rate.

Fordahorde is right, I was fishing in front of garrison entrance for like 10 minutes or so, after I've read his post I moved further in Frostfire territory and I got the "Molten Catfish" on second attempt.

I got the Molten Catfish on my 43rd cast all from a pool near the middle of the map. Looks like other commenters got it sooner so maybe I was a bit of an outlier. Just commenting here to tell you that if you don't get it in your first 10 or so casts like most of the comments say here, just keep on fishing and you should get it before too long. The pool closest to the garrison seems to be hit or miss based on your positioning from what others have said, so it's probably best to use a different pool just to be sure.

Just a note guys, this is for alts. You DONT need to physically have 700 fishing just put on every rag, bait, pole, hat etc to GIVE you 700 skill and you are gtg. I was 600 when i realized this, and got it. You could probably get this follower at 500 or way less. Have not tested below 600. Fish in your garrison next to fishing shack and wait fot the "!" to pop.

Bit of something I ran into while trying to do this quest today: don't bother with the fire pools on the Burning Glacier, the area right behind the garrison and right above the shipyard. Those pools are apparently too close to the ocean because I was getting Sea Scorpion instead of Fire Ammonite in open water and upwards of 60 casts at 936 fishing, no Molten Catfish.

Went to Frostwall Approach, the large pool right outside the entrance to the Garrison and the Molten Catfish popped at 6 casts.

Same for me, got in normal lava on entrance of garnison. Catch fire ammonite bait, use it and got a catfish.

If you're here in early 8.0, sorry buds. As of 22/7/18 it is still bugged. The bug? The quest requires 700 fishing to start. You only have 100 draenor fishing.

Hopefully it'll be fixed soon. Heres the GM response i got on Wednesday (patch day of EU)

As per our chat it seems there are a few reports regarding this so we added your case to them.

Right now there is no workaround just yet but as there seem to be a number of players affected it will hopefully be quick ^^

Just wanted to give an update for the latest patch: trend seems exactly the same as previous patches. Fishing from the lava between the garrison and the dock does not appear to yield the catfish; fishing from the lava at Frostwall Approach dropped the molten catfish on the sixth cast. Maxed fishing (950 + 21 from artifact + 10 worm supreme).

As of 8.1.5 lava pools in Frostfire Ridge are broken and will not allow you to fish in them.

However, you can still fish up the Molten Catfish in the tar pools in the Bones of Agurak, south of the Iron Siege Works in open water.

Note that this is the only place to fish Fire Ammonite pools as well at this time.

For those who had issues fishing in lava like me, i was able to fish it in frostfire in the arena located at 22.26, after less than 20 casts.

I got it after 20 tries, just north from the garrison theres a lava pool, Do not fish on the schools they dont drop the catfish. Just fish regularly in the lava!

The lava pool you should be fishing out of is marked on your map. It took me about 10 casts, 100 draenor fishing skill.

While it's implied in other comments, I can now confirm that it requires Draenor fishing skill 100 for this quest to show up. Took me 1-1.5 hours to level it up from 1 in garrison.

I see a lot of conflicting information in here, and as I was sifting through it I was just passively fishing in a lava pool west of the garrison (44, 66) and caught a Molten Catfish. Took about 6 minutes, and exactly 29 casts.

10.1.5: Quest was available to be seen and accepted at 87 Draenor fishing skill. I'm unsure if this became available at 85.

Description

Now that you are experienced enough with Draenor fishing, we might have a shot at convincing Nat Pagle to join us out here. If we want Nat to actually come all the way out here, we are going to have to show him real proof of the incredible catches on Draenor. Head out to the lava lakes here in Frostfire and see what you can do. All that time you spend honing your skill here in Draenor should pay off now.
