Actually this quest does NOT lead to Forging an Alliance alone.

You have to do this quest AND A Spark of Hope to get neutral with Sons of Hodir and head to Dun Niff.

Being that Sons of Hodir rep is one of the hardest to earn since you can't Champion them, I would suggest using this when doing the dailies and quests that give their reputation

just a note here, if you happen to summon the dwarf guys to help you, they will only attack the elites. So if you aggro the non elites roaming there, you are on your own. Theyre easy to kill though.

What I hate about this quest is that you're pretty dead if one of the giants aggro you and you dont have any boulder.
You can't pick up the boulders while in combat, I couldn't solo one as 79 retri with good gear and you can't outrun them before they kill you.
So watch your back carefully, and use your flying mount to get out of danger any time you're not fighting.

Btw, the Charm on Earth is also to be used on Fjorn, not just the Stormforged Giants.

Best way I've found to do this quest:

Step 1: Fly to the lake east of Dun Niffelm. Look around the east bank of the lake, or the path leading eastwards from the lake (there are dots on the map denoting the path).
Step 2: Find Granite Boulder on the ground. Click to pick one up.
Step 3: Use Thorim's Charm of Earth on these guys: Stormforged Iron Giants, then kill them. The dwarves that spawn will periodically taunt before they die, so go hog wild on DPS.
Step 4: Your first or second giant should drop Slag Covered Metal. Start the quest and kill Seething Revenant (non-elite) until you have 10x Furious Spark.
Step 5: By now, you should have killed 5 giants. Pick up another boulder and kill Fjorn. After he's dead, make sure to turn in The Refiner's Fire to the anvil. If you forget to do so, Fjorn will respawn and camp the anvil. Also, make sure to pick up the follow-up quest from the anvil.
Step 6: Fly back to Thorim, turn in both quests. Both quests will award you 22000 reputation with the Sons of Hodir (each), taking you from Hated to Neutral.

If you throw him one of those Granite Boulders, then find another Boulder. Throw him another one. You'll probably need to do this 3 times (to make sure he will die out of that).

I don't know if it's a bug or not, but after a while, only 1 dwarf spawned when i threw the boulder at the giants. Needless to say the dwarf died rather quick so I was pretty much on my own against the giant, and i stood little chance. Stupid!

Remember to do some damage to the giant/Fjorn yourself, if the earthens kill the target alone, you don't get credit. Noticed this the hard way.

This quest totally sucks. The rock can't stack and the number of dwarves you will summon is random. I've seen 6 at max (lucky), but in worst case it's can be just 2 and they will die fast. So after a hard lesson, I learn that the best way to kill those elites is to make sure you fight them besides another rock so you can pick it up once you throw the previous one. I find the path in the east (with dot on the map as the above post mentioned) is the best place for this strategy.

All the elites (including Fjorn) are stunnable. Unfortunately, they are not able to be feared. I guess I was lucky and got no less than 5 dwarves with each stone toss, but be warned, one of the elites can be near Fjorn, and there are no rocks next to the anvil to actually pick up. Barely managed as a 78 prot warr thanks to the add, which soon killed me.

By the way, the 22000 reputation from each of the quests get affected by the human racial "Diplomacy", so you do not start at neutral as human. I just did this and was surprised!
I did not start at 0/3000 neutral, but 3600/6000 friendly :P

Warlocks with felguard or hunters I would advise you to disable the intercept/charge ability until after you throw the rock. Otherwise your pet will stun the giant and the dwarfs will not spawn. I still managed to kill the giants with health funnel and drain life, but I got very good gear. You might not be so lucky.

A good way to earn money and exp(if ur´e rested) is too farm mobs in the area, each storm giant drops around 1k and gives about 1800exp not rested and 3700-3800rested

I think Blizzard made them elites so 1. The quest would be more epic and 2. So not just anybody can waltz up to the Stormforged Giant and loot http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?item=41556, thereby getting 22k rep automatically with the Sons of Hodur. Its still pretty annoying thought because I died twice doing the quest because of overaggro from the golem helpers. Ima moonkin though so no surprise.

I accidently aggro'd one of the 80 elites when i didnt have any Granite Boulders and had to fight it alone, level 79 blood speced DK with the axe from Amphitheater of Anguish and full savage saronite. Had no problems soloing it.

The order you do the quests is not that vital. If Fjorn is respawned when you want to deliver Slag Covered Metal quest, just fly and land on the giant anvil a few times. That will make Fjorn to attack you but since you are flying, it will immediately leave combat. After doing this several times, Bjorn will suddenly change his location from 77,62 (which is near the anvil) to 76,63. Then you can safely deliver the quest. I tried this two times just from the curiosity and it works, I think it is some kind of bug.

Beware that picking up a granite boulder while you are fighting a giant will despawn your current set of dwarfs (or at least it did for me 3 times in a row). All you need to do is do some dps, and they will go down. I found Faerie Fire very useful here, it increases the damage done by the dwarfs substantially and so made it a lot easier for them to hold aggro.

You can only carry one boulder at a time, but you can run back and pick up more and keep using them to summon more dwarves on the same giant. Be careful if you do this though, because you do need to fight the giants too if you want kill credit. I found out the hard way by letting 4 bounders-worth of earthen kill Fjorn. No credit :-(

well i am stuck after doing this quest and handing in to thorim, he didn't give me any quests :S, I need to do his chain to get friendly with the sons of hodir, I don't know what i did wrong i did every quest and I did the chain that ends with The Drakkensryd and killed the giants in the upper quest but that was the last thing he gave me, can you help me in that please?

the giants are very easy to solo as a demonology warlock

just put the pet in and dot it full, then life tap a few times and drain your life back to full.
when your pet gets low just health funnel him and they go down like critters

If you have problems with this quest... dwarf death and your own...

A handy hint.... stay by a place with more than 1 boulder. Call the dwarfs. cast or smack.. get a boulder and take them down from the Giants to Fjorn himself.

When I did this quest on my warlock, the first couple of times throwing the boulder no Dwarves came out. You have to dismiss your minion!

What I find most annoying and infuriating about this quest is that while you're having this epic battle with, basicly, demigods, you have to keep dodging mountain rams, because if they add, you can be in trouble.

Takes the edge off the epicness of this storyline right there.

Btw., thanks for the tip about using multiple boulders per giant: I used 3 on Fjorn, and by the time I picked up the 4th one, I actually had to rush over to tag him before the horde of Earthens killed him (which would have meant no kill credit for me)

If you a feral druid and borred, you can easily solo all of these giants in bear form. i usually had about 90% life left when they died. (couldent figure out how to use the boalders :( )

I actually didn't realize there was a quest item or anything (because I have quest helper and I just fly at the question marks on my map instead of reading quest logs, I know, I know >_<) so I started fighting the giants without boulders and thought to myself, "hm, 80 elite... odd. and not even a group quest."

but hey! you can totally solo these guys as a prot warrior and not need to get the boulders.

Be careful not to throw a boulder at a giant that is very close to another giant... I did this and the earthen attacked the giant that was further away, leaving me to kill the one I threw the boulder at by myself.

Also, the earthen killed the other one, but I didn't get credit because I hadn't participated. =/

Did you pick up the Slag Covered Metal? It starts a new quest, the "The Refiner's Fire" which you turn in at Fjorn's Anvil, which starts the quest A Spark of Hope which you also turn in to Thorim. It's both of these quests which take you from hated to neutral (friendly as human).

As of summer 2009 you can no longer pick up more than one boulder, so once you get the slag metal immediately focus on the sparks with the occasional giant interloper, once you kill Fjiorn you cannot even pick up boulders even when you haven't turned in the quest.

So. I pick up a boulder. I throw it at a giant. Dwarves appear, awesome! Giant kills each of them in 2-3 hits. Dwarves very quickly die, having done next to no damage to him. Priest soon follows, I can't do anything close to enough damage in the short time the dwarves and I live.

This is insane, the dwarves can't hold my agg even when I hold back and if they hold it at all, they proceed to die in 2 hits, naturally there are no other boulders nearby.

Is it bugged for me? Surely the dwarves are supposed to live longer than 2 hits?

Edit: It was. Relogging fixes it, for anyone else who has it happen. More dwarves appeared from each boulder after logging, too.

Was doing this quest (out of boredom..mostly)
And paladin was going around killing the revenants(spelling?)
Anyways, I didn't think he was on the same quest untill he used the item to summon all the earthies, Fjorn didn't go gray so I tought ''Cool, we both get the kill'', sadly, I stole his kill :/ So just some advice, if you're doing this, make sure you aggro him if there's other peopel who do it too, or group up.

I was really struggling with this as a 77 rogue. I was generating so much threat and was up so close that the giants were regularly hitting me for 2-3k in the time between the death of the dwarf that was currently tanking the giant and when the next one happened to decide to taunt. Only getting 2 or 3 dwarves from a boulder toss didn't help either. My solution: Use more than one boulder!

After you toss the first boulder and you get some dwarves on him, go and grab another boulder nearby before you join the fray. With only a 10 second CD on the boulder toss, I could toss 2 or 3 of them and have 8+ dwarves whacking away on him. At that point, we made quick work of the giants with all the dps and taunts flying around.

As of 4/15/2011 after finishing the two quests you are HONORED with Hodir.

For "Mending Fences" pick up the boulders around the lake, target one of the Storm Giants and use the item. A group of stone men will assist.

A "Spark of Hope" start quest drop item, "Slag covered metal," drops off of the Seething Remnants. I had to kill 4 to get to Fjorn.

As of patch 4.1 something (to give an exact idea, its name is "rise of the zandalari") of cataclysm, I seriously feared that completing this quest I would have wasted over 20.000 of reputation, as I still didn't have sons of hodir in my experience bar, I passed over half an hour looking around for WoW forums to find if this actually were the quest starting it, and so happened: I completed this, I got this message: "Reputation with The Sons Of Hodir increased by 28600.", "You are now Hated with The Sons Of Hodir", I completed the other quest that gives a lot of reputation with them, and it gave me 28.600 of experience again. Furthermore, I passed straight from hated to honored, "You are now Honored with The Sons Of Hodir".

As of the Pandaria release, you can spend those spare justice points on commendations for the Hodir in Dalaran and then do this quest chain. The quest chain gets you to Revered. Depending on your racials, time of year, guild status, you can sit with a calculator and figure out how many you need. They don't cost much in terms of JPs. It's a great way to use up the JPs. I did this on a leatherworker to get a nice bag pattern.

Holy sh*t.

Turning in this and A Spark of Hope during Wrath timewalking, as a human, got me all the way from Hated to Exalted!

I got 45760 rep from Mending Fences and 36,810 from A Spark of Hope which capped me at full Exalted.

Almost feels like cheating.

Mending Fences

Thorim at the Temple of Storms wants you to Kill Fjorn and 5 Stormforged Iron Giants at Fjorn's Anvil, east of Dun Niffelem.

Using Thorim's Charm of Earth will summon his Earthen to fight by your side. The charm requires a Granite Boulder from nearby Fjorn's Anvil.

Description

If I hope to wrest control of the Temple of the Makers from my brother, I must make amends with my old allies.

Perhaps by eliminating a common enemy, we may at least take a step towards renewing my friendship with the frost giants.

Fjorn has besieged Dun Niffelem with giants of iron. You must defeat him at Fjorn's Anvil, far to the east of here, and weaken his forces sufficiently for the Sons of Hodir to emerge victorious.

Take this charm, <name>. Use it to summon my earthen to your aid.
