After completing "Into the Nighthold" (20 Nightshards) and "The Nighthold: Delusions of Grandeur" (100% quest drops from Trillax and Elisande), you are offered "The Nighthold: Darkness Calls" to defeat Gul'dan on Normal difficulty or higher, which leads to this quest, finally unlocking the 3rd row appearance for your artifact.

Just completed this after collecting 20 Nightshards, killing Gul'dan, and completing the ritual in Moonguard Stronghold.. It is not account wide unlocked sadly. This will take a lot of time for people that want the appearances on all their characters they play. It is unfortunate because I want them on my alt Demon Hunter, but I am fine with that, my rogue now has his cool assassination daggers.

This is the last quest in the chain!

Introduction
This quest is part of a comment-size guide for "Balance of Power." questline (the last quest...finally). Quests are pretty much self-explanatory and all it takes is some time and good will to complete them. Completing this questline rewards Artifact Appearance (Appearance 3, Tint 1).

Part 1
Image of Kalec appears in your Order Hall and gives you the following quest:
The Power Within (Meet Archmage Kalec at Azurewing Repose in Azsuna.)
Reasons behind appearance of Archmage Kalec in your Class Order Hall are not yet completely understood but most people noticed him few days after they completed their Class Campaign.

Part 2
From there you take a next quest from Senegos:
The Heart of Zin-Azshari (Retrieve the Heart of Zin-Azshari and defeat the Wrath of Azshara in the Eye of Azshara on Mythic difficulty.)

Part 3
After completing the previous quests you receive a few new quests (exactly 3: two from Senegos and one from Archmage Kalec).
Senegos:
A Vainglorious Past (Obtain a Vainglorious Draught from Veridis Fallon.)
- You can purchase Vainglorious Draught from Veridis Fallon in Crumbled Palace in Azsuna for 150g (Requirement: Court of Farondis - Honored).

Fallen Power (Recover a Corrupted Essence from Oakheart and defeat the Shade of Xavius in Darkheart Thicket on Mythic difficulty.)

Archmage Kalec:
Tempering Darkness (Obtain 30 Blood of Sargeras.)
Should not be a problem since by the time you get that quest and if you did not spend any Blood of Sargeras you should have some stacked up simply by completing Dungeons and World Quests.

Part 4
Archmage Kalec:
Lucid Strength (Absorb the power from the Corrupted Essence using the Heart of Zin-Azshari.)
Right next to you.

Part 5
Senegos:
The Wisdom of Patience (Await the opening of The Emerald Nightmare, then report back to Senegos in Azsuna.)

Part 6
Archmage Kalec:
In Nightmares (Obtain a Deathglare Iris and the Horn of the Nightmare Lord from The Emerald Nightmare.) NOTE: NOT doable with LFR. It has to be Normal difficulty or higher. In order to complete this quest you need to kill 2 bosses: Il'gynoth and Xavius and loot mentioned quest items.

Senegos:
Essence of Power (Collect 30 Corrupted Essence from The Emerald Nightmare.) This quest gave me a weird WoD and Khadgar flashback. NOT doable with LFR. Only Normal or higher difficulty. Essences ~~do not~~ have a 100% drop rate and bosses can drop 1-5 Corrupted Essences at the time.

Part 7
Senegos:
Essential Consumption (Absorb the combined power of the Corrupted Essences using the Heart of Zin-Azshari.)
Right next to you.

Part 8
Archmage Kalec:
Repaid Debt (Meet Archmage Kalec in the Shal'Aran in Suramar.)

Part 9
Thalrenus Rivertree:
Lost Knowledge (Obtain the Scroll of Elun'dris from First Arcanist Thalyssra.)
- Costs 120g. Requirement: The Nightfallen - Revered).

Part 10
Thalrenus Rivertree:
Borrowing Without Asking (Recover a Containment Crystal from the Vault of the Wardens on Mythic difficulty.)

Syrana Starweaver:
Rite of the Captain (Take Advisor Vandros' Eon Winder from The Arcway on Mythic difficulty.)

Lothrius Mooncaller:
Literary Perfection (Find Lothrius' first edition copy of "Wards, Sigils, and the Nightborne Way" in the Court of Stars on Mythic difficulty.)

Part 11
Syrana Starweaver:
Twisted Power (Use a Greater Portal Stone to summon Vizuul the Twisted at the Altar of End Times in Faronaar and collect his runebindings.)

Part 12

A True Test (Absorb the power from the Twisted Runebindings using the Heart of Zin-Azshari.)

A Feast Fit for Odyn (Acquire flank meat from Thunderhoof in Stormheim, Spinesever's spine in Highmountain, and a steak from Leytusk in Azsuna.)

Presentation is Key (Retrieve 4 Adamantium Casing Scraps and defeat Dargrul the Underking in Neltharion's Lair on Mythic difficulty.)

Part 17
Ashildir:
Odyn's Blessing (Obtain Odyn's blessing in the Halls of Valor on ~~Heroic or~~ Mythic difficulty.)
- Use Grand Feast of Valhallas when you enter the dungeon - at the start. You can enter the dungeon alone, put the feast down, get out and then get a group to defeat Odyn and get his blessing. After you defeat him wait for him to finish his speech (RP) and then you can collect his blessing on the loot chest.

Part 18
Archmage Kalec:
Planning the Assault (Await the opening of the Nighthold, then meet Archmage Kalec in Shal'Aran.)

Part 19
Archmage Kalec:
Into the Nighthold (Collect 20 Nightshards from the Nighthold on Normal difficulty or higher.)

Thalrenus Rivertree:
The Nighthold: Delusions of Grandeur (Collect the core of Trilliax and Grand Magistrix Elisande's Millennia Tome in the Nighthold on Normal difficulty or higher.)

Archmage Kalec:
The Nighthold: Darkness Calls (Bring one Gul'dan's eyes to Archmage Kalec on Normal difficulty or higher.)

Part 20
Archmage Kalec:
Balance of Power (Absorb the combined power of the Nightshards and the Eye of Gul'dan using the Heart of Zin-Azshari at the Lunar Crucible.)

As for the actual quest, use the portal to Moonguard Stronghold, then run to the very top past all the mobs. As you get to the end you will phase and the mobs chasing you will disappear. Just follow the RP instructions, click on the thingy twice and enjoy your new achievement! Be ready for a screenshot too.

Once again, Kalec simply leaves without even considering just giving you a lift to the destination. Seriously, every time this chain progressed with Kalec saying "I'll meet you there" I would start fuming that I had to walk while he would just blink there.

For those on alts who didn't quest in Azsuna (to mix it up or for w/e reason)...

You must complete the starting questline @ Illidari Stand (part 1 of achieve Azsuna Matata: Behind Legion Lines)

--> While doing this quest line, you will end up being directed to the Blue Dragonflight (at the end) which 'unlocks' this whole chain needed to start The Power Within / Balance of Power

I cannot believe how long and incredibly difficult this quest line was and just for an artifact appearance! It took forever to get into the mythic dungeons, let alone enough Nighthold Normal groups to complete - even at iLvL over 890. :( By the time I completed this, the large AP item was kind of useless because I had been maxxed out on AP for weeks.

I don't mind expansive quest lines like this for an actual legendary. But for just making my existing item a different color - who cares.

Is there an update to this now that the Nighthold is open ? Ive done the questline on one character and Ive finished on a second up to the point where you await the opening of the Nighthold, however it's now open and i can not find the Archmage anywhere

I know that they got rid of the rep grind for the Suramar questline, but they should have also gotten rid of the rep grind for the Balance of Power questline. What's the point of getting rid of the rep grind for Suramar if we still have to do rep grind for Balance of Power?

There are several tertiary requirements that you'll need to meet to be able to progress along the Balance of Power quest chain at various points. You can and should work towards completing these as soon as possible if you want to complete the quest chain quickly. If you wait to pursue these objectives until you're forced to by a quest, you'll increase your total time required to complete this chain significantly, as, especially in the case of Reputations, progression is time gated.
In the order they become relevant, they are:

Complete your Order Hall Campaign through A Glorious Campaign, Forged for Battle, and Roster of Champions. This is required for Kalec to appear in your Order Hall and offer The Power Within. It usually takes him 1-3 days after you've done this to appear.
Complete the "Behind Legion Lines" quest objective of Azsuna Matata, beginning with Into the Fray and ending with Dark Revelations to unlock and then complete the "Defending Azurewing Repose" quest objective of Azsuna Matata, beginning with Journey to the Repose and ending with Hunger's End in Azsuna. This is required before you can turn in The Power Within to begin the Balance of Power chain in earnest.
Earn Honored Reputation with the Court of Farondis. This is required to purchase the Vainglorious Draught from Veridis Fallon for A Vainglorious Past. This is the last tertiary objective you'll need to have done before you can begin Emerald Nightmare for your 30 Corrupted Essence for The Emerald Nightmare: Essence of Power. which will take you at least two raids to do unless you are extremely lucky.
Complete the "Nightfall" quest objective of Nightfallen But Not Forgotten, beginning with Khadgar's Discovery and ending with Arcane Thirst, then complete Shal'Aran to unlock and then complete the "Moon Guard Stronghold" quest objective of Good Suramaritan, beginning with Not Their Last Stand and Fate of the Guard, and ending with Last Stand of the Moon Guard in Suramar. This is required before you can complete Repaid Debt and progress the Suramar portion of the quest chain.
Earn Revered Reputation with The Nightfallen. This is required to purchase the Scroll of Elun'dris from First Arcanist Thalyssra for Lost Knowledge which you'll need to do as soon as you begin the Suramar portion of the quest chain.
Earn Revered Reputation with the Valarjar to prove your worth to Eyir and receive the Mark of the Valkyra for The Mark in Stormheim. This is the last tertiary objective you'll need to complete, and is required before you can progress the Stormheim portion of the quest chain.

Lastly, while not a requirement, it is recommended that if you manage to collect all of the Nightshard for The Nighthold: Into the Nighthold before you kill Gul'dan, that you return to Shal'Aran as soon as you have them and The Nighthold: Delusions of Grandeur completed, because you will not be able to loot the Eye of Gul'dan during the same week for the next and final quest, The Nighthold: Darkness Calls, if you have already killed him.

Edit: As of Patch 8.0.1, The Nighthold: Darkness Calls appears to be available alongside The Nighthold: Into the Nighthold and The Nighthold: Delusions of Grandeur instead of being made available after them.

If you boosted your Paladin to 110 like me and your goal is to get the 3rd Relic Skin unlocked it can be kind of frustrating. By completing all your Class Hall quests you get Kalec to appear after a day or so. To actually aid "Senegos" for the Power Within you must finish all the Azure Wing Repose Quests. To start Azure Wing Repose you need to finish the Illidari Stand quests before hand. Unsure of the actual names of the quest but ... You can get these at Illidari Stand in Azsuna, there should be maybe 1 or 2 quest givers (Not Khadgar), from there you have to kill some demons, free some people trapped by demons, free a dragon "Stellagos", and then complete Dark Revelations by killing the Traitor. And then you can start Khadgar's Journey to the Repose.

It's getting ridiculous. I understand this was a way for them to guarantee people would be running ancient content the entire expansion but you have to cut people off at some point. There is no reason to require every single person to run through the entire Balance of Power quest line if they've done it already or two times or three times. Really silly.

This is the least alt friendly expansion ever made. When I finally decided to mess around with alts when Argus came out (I realized that 1 main for Legion was the smart way to go), it was incredibly frustrating re-doing all this old stuff I had done before while trying to maintain my main. This is just another time sink that feels really dumb to be doing all over again. And again. And again. And again.

I am dreading having to redo this entire thing all over again just for the skins on my DH. Isn't it enough that I have rank 86 on my sub rogue wep and cannot bring myself to grind 5 trillion AP for 87 because when I put any AP into it the bar doesn't even move?

I completed this last entire Part of the Questline in one single run today!

Previously you had to port out b4 Guldan and come back in after turning the quests in i finisehd all 20 shards, Millenia of Tome, Matrix Core and The Eye of Guldan which used to be a follow up quest if im not mistaken! I dropped the Eye of Guldan at the end and was able to turn all 3 Quests at once leading to the Artifact appearances. Guess it was tweaked to be easier now. Will try on my other alt soon, cuz i did it on 8+ chars before and never managed to get it in a single run like today

If you are doing this chain AT LEVEL 120 released.. STOP IT.

The last quest of the chain requires a Artifact Weapon Equiped, and if you started leveling at BfA, you already destroyed your's...

I did that and only wasted my time.

If you're doing this in BfA, this quest will work, as long as you have your artifact weapon equipped. If not, you'll be able to do everything but the last channeled spell, at which point you'll be told you have to have the artifact equipped.

The Moon Guard mages and Kalec were patient enough to keep the ritual up as I summoned up a Jeeves and got my Thas'dorah out of the bank. THEN, I could finish the channel and complete the quest.

Very easy to do in BFA, soloing everything except for the two raids is trivial and for them you just have to grab a few people in the group finder (spec is irrelevant) and they become extremely faceroll. Do mythic Nighthold so you get a shot at a bonus mount as well from gul'dan!

I know people hate this chain for alts, as did I back in Legion after doing it on my main. However, I just re-did it on an alt at 120 and it was far more enjoyable. I was able to solo all the mythic dungeons, and finding a group for the raids was instantaneous (plus you just zoom through them). Other than being a bit gated behind reputations and raid resets for certain items, this was nowhere near as bad of a grind at 120 as it was in its prime.

For people that are starting this on new alt, all you need to do is finish your Order/Class Hall campaign and research Order/Class Hall upgrades (to point when you are able to wear 2 legendary items) and Kalec will appear in Order Hall. Just did this on 2 fresh alts. Haven't touched any of the Legion quests since i leveled them only by invasions. Hope this helps for people that are stuck/don't know how to start Balance of Power quest line. I would recommend clearing all quests in Azsuna since you will need honored status with Court of Farondis later in quest chain and also to be able to see Kalec in Azsuna.

Looking for some guidance guys. I've started to play my Druid as a main. He completed a lot of the content in Legion, though seems not the "Balance of Power". I've completed the quest chain that was available in my class hall (4 mythics, trial of valor etc.) but there are no more quests I can see and not sure how I get the next stage of the "Balance of Power" chain, any ideas?

If you are not seeing the RP for the last part, use ground mount and walk up from Moon Guard Stronghold portal. I flew there and it did not appear. Left and approached on path with ground mount and it poped up just fine.

Sometimes transmogging this appearance on a different weapon can be a little buggy at first. My hunter was able to do it immediately with no problem. On my demon hunter the artifact got the appearance as soon as the absorbing cast was completed but it wouldn't show up in my appearances tab, so I couldn't transmog it onto my BfA weapon. First I tried reloading the UI, but no dice. Logged off and back on, still no luck. Quitting and relaunching the game didn't work either. I finally ended up going to the DH class hall, selected a different appearance and re-selected the new appearance, then quit the game, relaunched and logged back on. Once I did all that, it finally showed up in my appearances and I could transmog it onto my BfA warglaives. If you're having the same problem, I hope this helps.

I'm a little stuck with this chain, I completed BoP on my main hunter in legion, want to get appearance on my paladin, I have completed Azsuna story line (first 2, Behind Legion Lines, Defending Azurwing Repose) however I still cannot see Kalec in my class hall, does anyone also run in similar problem and know how to proceed with achiv? Do I need to complete more chains/grind reps etc.? Any help plx :)

Whatever else you read on this page, please note the following when doing the Emerald Nightmare portion of the chain:

You can only loot Corrupted Essences once per boss per week across all difficulties. If you clear EN before picking up this quest (like I did, d'oh) then you will NOT be able to loot ANY Corrupted Essences until the next weekly reset. Seeing as how it's extremely unlikely you will get 30/30 in one run, but quite possible in 2 runs, you will turn a 2-week endeavour into a 3-week endeavour if you do not respect this mechanic!

Yes it's stupid, yes it's frustrating, yes it's time-gated - but this is Legion quests we're talking about, what were you expecting?

So I'm at the final part of this quest in Moonguard trying to absorb the power but the extra ability "Ancient Power" isn't working for me. I've tried it both with my artifact equipped and with a weapon transmogged into my artifact equipped and neither of them work. I'm standing in the empty circle and every time I hit the ability my character just tries to kneel then stands back up. Maybe it's something the prepatch broke? Anyone run into this issue?

If your new druid form doesn't show up after you complete the quest in the barber shop, relog and it should work.

For those of you having issues with this quest:
you need to transmog your current weapon to an artifact weapon, then it will allow you to complete the ritual for Balance of Power quest.

Been seeing a lot of issues with certain action bar addons and the base Blizzard UI not properly displaying the action button you need to do this. If you've already absorbed and it's not giving you an option to do anything else try /click ExtraActionButton1

I'm not native, so bear with my English :D I didn't find working true/false scripts in 2020 so I made this list with working scripts and links to the quests. I used this Wowhead comment as my source material. I corrected the scripts and sorted some of the quests to match Wowhead's quest order. There's some quests missing on the list (i.e. return quests/X area storyline completed), since I sorted the order it's easier to figure out if which one you still need to complete from the Wowhead questline.

For everyone doing this achieve currently you will need achievements after you get this one for the other skins. You need to kill all of the world bosses , complete a 15 in time, and .

I didn't play in legion so I wish I had paid closer attention, now I have to wait so many more weeks to kill all the World Bosses and have to run the dungeons. You can do this in between grinding rep.

This still isn't account wide, by the way. Some recent comments may make it appear that way.

ETA: you get the class appearances account wide. You still have to do the whole questline on that class if you want that appearance.

You need to log out and log in again after completing the quest in order for the bear form being available from the barber shop as a druid.

One of my toons is a druid with which I wanted to do this questline with to get my artifact transmog. I was wondering how to get this questline. I had to do the following:

- Unlocked the order hall, of course.
- Got all the artifacts ie. feral, restoration and balance. Quite easy.
- Completed the druid campaign completely.

After I got the Archdruid title (completing campaign), it took 2-3 days for Kalec to appear with Power Within quest in the class hall. It took me a few days (maybe a week?) to do the class campaign. It's painful to wait for those champion quests to end (which there were about 20 that I had to complete)

I completed this chain on one of my paladins today and wanted to update 2 bits of info from below:

1. Not sure when this changed, but at least as of 9.2 this quest chain seems to be account-wide, at least for the same class. I completed this on one paladin and my other paladin is able to use the unlocked appearances even though he hasn't completed the quest chain. (This may only be for the same class, so apologies if it's not available for all classes.)

2. Someone below mentioned having issues getting the appearances to show up in their transmog options after completing the chain. I had the same issue but used the suggestion of logging all the way out of battlenet and restarting and this fixed the issue for me. Also, make sure you actually turn the quest in once complete. There's an animation showing your character unlocking the appearances, but it won't officially give you credit until you turn the quest in.

I have now at least completed BoP for 8 times and Class Hall for mount for 9 times.
Any one also like Legion and Xmog like I do?

I have little tips if u get lost at where u r.
U need Class Hall to unlock Balance of Power.
So, better do them like all together with Mount quests which also needs Class Hall.

My close-eye tips always work like this:
Do all storyline in both Azsuna and Val'sharah (get to Honored)
Do all questions in Broken Shore.
Do all daily quests in Suramar and Valarjar (get to Revered)
(u can do Suramar quests to get rep too.

I have always been telling my friends to finish for xmog.
They refused and said too long time and effort.

I use a new new char (no touch on legion at all) and test.
I need to work.
Approximately, Class Hall needs 14 days.
Balance of Power needs another 3 weeks. (if reset timing is good cuz they need u to collect things at two raids. Each needs two weeks. = 3 weeks due to lockout)
(raid = Nightmare + Nighthold)

So. Even u missed the reset. at most, 6 weeks if u are familar with the quests like me.

During Legion time walking there is a vendor near the flight path in Legion's Dalaran (Aridormi). From them you can buy reputation tokens that are BoA to mail to alts.

The tokens cost 50 Timewarped Badge and reward 250 rep. With these tokens you can skip most of the questing or world quests for reputation towards Balance of Power.

You will need 84 of these tokens to get to revered reputation with the Nightfallen and Valarjar each, and just 36 with Court of Farondis to get to honored reputation. This is of course assuming you are starting from neutral (0) reputation with these 3 factions.

I just did this today on a fresh level 60 alt and it probably saved me a few days of world quests and questing. Just thought I'd leave this comment here to help others who are tired of doing this grind -- I know I am, I think I've done it 5-6 times now.

*EDIT: You will still have to do some questing, such as getting up to Azurewing Repose in Azsuna (took all of 5-10 minutes). Also, you will still need to save Thalyssra in Suramar and complete up to the end of the Moon Guard Stronghold storyline. The tokens will still reduce the amount of time you spend questing for reputation greatly, however. I would recommend doing these pre-requisite quests before spending any of your Timewarped Badge.

Made an account here to pay it forward and add a handful of tips that have been a huge help in the last few weeks.

On this one: as of 13/10/2022 - for the Balance of Power rep grinds (Nightfallen, Valarjar, Court of Farondis) you can stash up on timewalking dungeon tokens then BUY Insignia tokens from the Legion timewalking vendor once that event is happening on your calendar! So the rep grind becomes much better/less effort although you may have to wait some months before the next Legion timewalking event. The vendor selling the rep tokens is Aridormi

Last part where I need to absorb the power... im stuck its not doing anything. I have clicked twice. one in bear form and one in cat form with both artys equiped. there is a world quest in same part and its one I cant do for life or me could that be why?. this guide can suggest you the best character to start working on the balance of power storyline (based on your current progress). it can also track your current progress, so you can easily figure out where you left last time.

It's stupid and disgusting that they just can't bother to go back and increase drop rate. Takes me three freaking weeks to complete this quest that is literally 4 expansions old and it's only purpose is to obtain a mediocre looking artifact appearance! Ridiculous.

If you are doing this 10.0.5 (Dragonflight) and beyond - On last quest - Make sure you have your artifact weapon equipped for the spec you are in. If you are a druid, also be in the shapeshift form you are spec'd into.

I'm in version 10.1.7, and I'd like to do this quest to unlock the bear form appearances. I've done the "Behind Legion Lines" and "Defending Azurewing Repose" prerequisites, but I can't find Kalec in either Suramar or Dreamgrove (I'm a druid).
Where is he?

Druids. You need to be in your artefact's form (Bear, Cat, etc..)

If you fly to the quest marker but don't see anything, try dismounting and running up to the spot from the Moonguard Stronghold. The ritual set-up and NPCs appeared for me then.

Anyone doing this quest chain nowadays and whenever you need Ancient Mana super fast, i get ~2k in maybe few minutes just running around collecting items with flying

Step 1: do questchains to unlock this to see minimap ancient stones/items Mana Divining Stone
Step 2: Go to Suramar city and fly around with that stone activated, super easy.
