For this quest you must complete three tests, each involving the killing of a spirit:

Test One: Spirit of Violence - Casts "Sha Corruption", creating a deadly cloud wherever you are standing. Make sure you are moving when it finishes casting so you are out of the way.

Test Two: Spirit of Anger - Along with the previous spell, it casts "Devastation", creating bubbles all around your initial position. Move out of the way immediately to make sure you are not caught in it.

Test Three: Spirit of Hate - Along with the previous two spells, it casts "Whirlwind of Anger". It takes a few seconds for him to warm up so make sure to move as far away from him as possible so that when he begins coming after you, you are out of range of his blades.

Remember those simple rules and you should be able to pass the tests with no problem. Get caught in any of those attacks and you will likely lose 1/3 to 1/2 of your health very quickly.

P.S. If there are others doing the quest at the same time, make sure to move away from them. The spirit will follow you and you will then be sure of not getting caught up in the attacks of someone else's spirit.

At the completion of this quest chain the gates to Vale of Eternal Blossoms will be opened which will gain you access to Shrine of Seven Stars which is the Alliance city hub in Pandaria.
(Or if you are Horde to Shrine of Two Moons.)

It has portals to Stormwind, Ironforge, Darnassus, Exodar, Shattrath and Dalaran.

It has bankers and auctioneer (for engineers only) and access to void storage, reforging and transmogrification.

And it has a flight trainer which on level 90 will teach you to fly in Pandaria.

Just as an FYI, if you die during Test 1 or 2, release, come back then succeed in the subsequent phases, you will not be able to summon the opponent from the earlier test that you failed.

I fixed this problem by dropping the quest and starting over.

On the last part, the Sha of Hatred, be careful if you're kiting the mob around the room like I was. Apparently if you get too far from the center of the room, the mob runs back towards the center and disappears. This happened to me twice, but you can restart just that phase by talking to the tiger again.

This questchain is a prerequisite to start doing the Golden Lotus Dailies.

Without this questchain you will *not* be able to do the initiating quests (and dailies thereafter) for golden lotus, you wont even see the startquest in the Shrine of/the Seven Stairs, not even if you're lvl 90.

A guildie had this happen and i can confirm that he to redo part of this quest chain, starting from A Witness to History and after this the dailies became visible. I say "redo" because he had already done them but apparently he needed to do them again.

For thoes that may be getting frustrated with this quest To give you a heads up. Move all around that cricle. When you see the Spell being cast get you buns moving away from the boss. once that cast is done jump in and start hiting with eveyrthing you got when he starts up again move keep moving until the cast ends then turn and attack. The Idea is to keep moving stand in one spot and die not good. Move move move :)

The tips about keeping out of the spell area are true - but as the last one (Sha of Hatred) is five times stronger than me, this just meant it took him about 2 minutes to kill me instead of a few seconds. Even using mirror only delays my inevitable death briefly (since he uses the deadly attacks on them instead), and I can reduce him to about 60% of his original health before he kills me.

Anyone solo this as a lvl 88 mage, or am I just taking this on too soon?

As a feral druid, I wasn't able to pull this off until lvl 90...had very frustrating attempts at lower levels, but i'm far from the best at hitting the right key at the right time. I'm a solo/quester so my armor's OK but nothing to write home about..got good and buffed up with Flask of the Earth (+1980 Stam) and Sea Mist Rice Noodles (+300 Agil)...took me three tries...as others have said, it's all about KEEP MOVING and whup on him when he's not casting...nice to be done with it! I got into the Vale early on by jumping the wall (geez...cats can fall a LONG ways and live!), but still needed to get this quest to get cozy with the Golden Lotus clan.

Did this as a lvl 88 Rogue. Keep moving and mashing those buttons! Died once before I figured that out (and it's a LONG way back) and had to vanish out of the last one once. Healed up and hit it again. About 1% health left, but got him.

My Aff Lock hammered these guys so quickly, I just assumed that was the usual deal. The next time I tried it with my DK, there was nothing left but little pieces. What had changed? I was about to get on a plane to Irvine to express my intense joy at a number of things, not the least of which is that the GY is two time zones and three plane changes away. Good thing I had a visa to get back. Lesson #1: Do Not Die; you will need half your annual vacation to get back. On the other hand you could read War and Peace on the way back.

Lesson #2: Just read what the smart and clever posters wrote before. Don't stand in it. Apparently the "it" you're not supposed to stand in doesn't affect Voidwalkers. Mine just stood there whacking away at the apparitions while I connected the dots. It's a little different when you have to stand within melee range. Maybe it was the apparitions' bad breath?

Lesson #3: The other reason you don't want to stand in it even if you are are wearing a lot of plate is that the fog of war or whatever these plug-uglies are belching up slows all your spells and melee attacks down so much that you start to think something went wrong with your computer. It wasn't until the same thing happened twice that I realized it was part of the effect.

Lesson #4: Don't try to be a hero. You'll basically be trying to fight while you're constantly running away like a little wimpoid. Don't worry about it - at the end the schmucks will be dead and you'll be having a cocktail at a tavern somewhere other than in elf territory.

Lesson #5: Locks are OP. So be it. Don't tell anyone.

P.S. The Designers have one more Bronx cheer for you: try to find the repair guy! (Hint: 66.66, 52.16)

My experience was quite difficult. As a Blood Death Knight I killed everything and everyone except the last demon. I am still working on this quest. I think that the author of this quest is none other than the obsequious sinophile of Red River and other locations. There is nothing I despise more than Blizzard developers, game monitors, and programers. Sadistic infantile beings of nastitude! The one thing one should be before playing this quest is level 90. We the customers do not need this grief of poorly designed quests. The third demon portion of this quest is filled with so much control jamming on the part of the program against the client that it is criminal.

Died the first time as a 88 Retribution paladin but nailed it the second time with barely a scratch. Biggest thing to worry about on the 3rd one is the bladestorm - interrupt it with basically anything you have: I used Fist of Justice primarily and kept moving. Judgement, Exorcism, Hammer of Wrath... anything to keep him at range. When I hit him with a Fist I would move in and hammer on him a bit, then back off before the stun wore off. Blinding Light worked well also. Good luck!

Does anyone know why I doesn't get credit for talking to Xuen? I've killed the ones from test one, test two and test three. Only the "Speak to Xuen" thing left. Tried to talk to him after I killed all those from the tests and still no credit.

Abondoned the quest and started all over again. Works good now.

Anyone having an issue with the last trial. I have tried him 4 times and every time when I get about half way down, he ups and disappears or runs away and disappears. I read the other post and make sure I stay well within the pathway of the circle, but it stills happens. Any ideas or help?

Never Mind. I final beat the sucker. I was able to take him down with not to much problem, once I started using my "Fist of Justice" to stun him only when he wound up for his whirling attack and just before he was able to reach me with it. The rest of his spells I did not worry that much about just move out of them and mainly did my close up attacking while he was stunned.

I know it sounds dumb & obvious but this isn't like your normal NPC fights where you can stand there & take the hits as a pally or warrior. As soon as they cast their AOE's Move ASAP. I wondered why I kept dying so quickly. Those AOE's like drain you. (Just like those negative emotions do in the real world.)

On the last boss if you go to far away you drop out of the fight & have to start over.

Is the last test always Varian, or do the Alliance characters get Garrosh? Is the Spirit of Hatred's face chosen by race? I could kind of see why my Blood Elf would hate Varian, with what happened at Quel'Thalas and the hate of humans, but I wouldn't say the Blood Elves hate him specifically.

Just an FYI ----

You do not need to ABANDON the quest if you die OR if the spirt of "____" vanishes mid-combat.

You simply talk to Xuen once again and it will pick up where you've left off

If you do this as a mage or a class with a pet make sure you kill the anger pet FIRST. If you don't then you next trial will start and you have to face the last mob as well as your pet.

I'm not sure if you start the test without a pet/elemental out if it will still clone it or not but it is worth a try not having the pet out for the second boss.

While doing this i had my Warbot pet out and i am not sure if it was a bug or what but it copied it and made two spirits of anger forcing me to kill 2 mobs instead of the one. It is weird that it would copy my companion pet and not my hunter pet so i definitely think it is a bug but just in case, watch out!

While you gonna turn in Temple of the White Tiger, the NPCs are talking about the situation.

Zhi the Harmonious says: ...I've seen them with my own eyes: Mogu legions, storming the Vale in force. We are not trained for mass combat!

Then, after you take the quest A Celestial Experience and go through it, the NPCs are talking during the course of your fight.

Anduin Wrynn says: We're here to lend our aid. We can help protect the Vale.

If you aren't doing this while leveling a toon, and instead take on this quest at level 90 to unlock the Golden Lotus dailies, you may continually bug yourself out if your DPS is too high; killing your shadows before the NPCs in the back are finished with their scripted conversations will cause the following shadow to disappear before you can aggro it.

Happened to me on multiple pet-tanking hunters, and it was resolved by slowing my DPS a little, to allow the conversations to play out before killing my sha.

The dialogue for this quest has changed slightly with the desecration of the Vale in 5.4.
New/altered lines are bolded.

As you approach Xuen (technically still on Temple of the White Tiger):

Taran Zhu says: Half of the Vale lies in ruin! These outsiders have been more destructive than the mantid and mogu combined!
Anduin Wrynn says: Give us a chance to put things right.
Taran Zhu says: Great Tiger, the strangers from beyond the mists, they cannot be trusted. The wreckage in the Jade Forest can attest to this.

The only parts that seem to change in the dialogue after you pick up the quest are these:

Xuen says: Ah, another stranger from beyond the mists.
Taran Zhu says: Soon they will overwhelm this continent! Where do we draw the line?
Anduin Wrynn says: We're here to lend our aid. We can help you rebuild the Vale.
Taran Zhu says: We have witnessed your "help" in the Jade Forest. This "Horde," this "Alliance" of yours - you have no control over your own nature. You leave misery in your wake.

And later:

Xuen says: It is decided. The Vale of Eternal Blossoms shall remain open. The transgressions of the outsiders have been great... but I see in them the capability to right what has been wronged.
Anduin Wrynn says: Thank you, Master White Tiger. You will see. I believe that my people - and the Horde - are essentially good.
Xuen says: I will consult the others. Meet me at the gates.
Sunwalker Dezco says: I find your faith inspiring, little one. But I wonder if you have ever met our warchief?

While it was nice of Blizzard to try to keep this quest up to date (with voice acting and everything!) the timeline feels a little...weird. Anduin and Taran Zhu seem to be in good health and missing the injuries Garrosh inflicted on them, but Taran Zhu is still fearful and xenophobic, as he was when the Sha of Hatred had control of him. That said, he does state in Siege of Orgrimmar that "we should never have let them in", so it's possible that Garrosh's attack convinced him that the Alliance and Horde truly shouldn't be trusted. Either way, Sunwalker Dezco's joke doesn't really work anymore.

i found an EXTREMELY interesting and humorous bug with this quest on my 87 Destro lock (not that the spec matters):

I summoned a Gateway into the arena before starting the fights, approximately from where you are thrown before each fight. When any of the fights started, two mobs spawned, one was my character's mirror, the other one was my GATEWAY!
First fight, the gateway mob despawned soon after I entered combat,
second fight I had to kill both of the mobs.
The third fight.. I didn't get a Gateway mob at all, but on the arena there was Garrosh and WRYNN. I was too busy trying to get a screenie of the incident, so I died.

It honestly freaked me out every time combat started (seeing as how the results were always different from the earlier one).

TL;DR: If a warlock summons Gateways to the arena, they might get an opponent with the model of the Gateway (or Wrynn on the third fight).

Okay, I went to do the three tests and when I arrived, there were two players - one Horde and one Alliance - standing around the circle as if waiting, so I took one of our friend's above advice and waited my turn. And waited, and waited and waited. Finally I asked the Allie if he were waiting to go into the quest, and after 3-4 minutes he answered: "Just chillin' ". Okay, so I figured the Horde player was also just chillin and made ready to go a second time after dying and after reading this thread. But before I could even talk to Xuen, here came two players and went right into the quest; no asking about turns, who was waiting, etc. I finally just left and will probably go back in the wee hours of the morning. I guess not everyone is as polite as we are. lol.

It seems really wrong that the proper response to the "spirit of violence" is to prove yourself more violent than the sha by beating up the spirit of violence.

First time I got to this quest, I ran around the room trying to find a non-violent way to deal with the spirit, so the Celestial and other witnesses could see we're not always warlike.

The difference in difficulty levels with this quest is **massive**.

My Hunter and Shadow Priest downed this guy without the slightest
problem, (run, shoot / pet tank, run)... piece of cake.

With a Rogue it's an entirely different subject.

Yes you can sprint away when he starts casting no problem...
But to complete the trial you have to kill him too.

This means running back towards him and attacking in between casts.

Consequently you get so little time to attack and get so little damage done (as well as taking heavy physical damage off his axe swing ), this is a real pain in the a$$ of a quest.

Blizzard need to re-think this, and either provide Melee DPS classes with much improved shielding & distrupt abilities (15 seconds on kick - is totally ridiculous it should be more
like 3 seconds)... or give *every* class proper minions/pets that can absorb & give decent damage.

Found a bug. Not sure if this goes for the first and second test but, on the third. DO NOT GET DRUNK! You will not be able to proceed till you are sobering up. I guess they don't allow drunken fighting ><

What do I have to do to get the second spirit to appear? Defeated the first one, listened to the completion of the conversation, but then stand around and nothing happens, tried talking to Xuen and everyone else in the room, nothing. Tried abandoning and starting over and it stalls in the same place. There must be something I need to *do* to get the second spirit to appear, but what?

I don't know if any other classes and/or hunters had this issue, but on my hunter when I got to the third test, instead of spawning only one spirit of hatred he spawned FOUR, yes FOUR. One garrosh hatred and three varian ones lol

So I tried this as a lvl 100 and it bugged after the first test. I left the temple and walked back in to Xuen and it continued where it bugged and it finished easily. A GM said it is because we kill too quickly at lvl 100. If it happens to you try walking out of the temple down the steps and back in again.

If you are doing this well into WoD, you might find the progression sticking on you. After reading the comments here, I found that moving around during the fight - even if it's normally a one- or two-hit kill for you - will keep the sequence of tests moving along properly. Pace your blows by the dialogue going on between the northerners, Pandaren, and Xuen.

BUG SOLUTION CONFIRMED

I couldn't get past the Second Phase.

Solution was to NOT KILL anything before Xeun was done talking. After i killed the creature og ran back to Xeun each time.

Seems they may have put in a quick fix for when it gets stuck. I was on the third phase when it stuck and after coming here to reread how to do it right i went back and clicked on Xuen and it restarted the third phase threw me out to the normal spot the sha thing appeared turned into Garrosh and i quickly took him down ended the quest. XD

For those that experience bug, for mobs not to spawn after first or second mob, in Legion, after every mob spawns go back to the Xuen, wait for everyone to finish their talk and slowly kill the mob, with a weapon preferable. And wait for Xuen to blow you away across the room, and repeat. That way all 3 mobs will spawn properly and you will finish the quest.

I'm in patch 8.3 or something, leveling a lock. At level 90, I do not kill these tests very fast, but for some reason this quest still did not smoothly progress for me. I have abandoned it and retried it at least three different times, always getting stuck on the last test. The dialogue would go, but the test itself did not appear.

When my test did not show up, I ran out of the temple, ran back in, and talked to Xuen. My last test showed up and I was able to complete the quest easily.

For hunters, dismiss your pet. The reason for dismissal of your pet is that they will attack the spirit aggressor even before they have a chance to lay a few attacks on you. Of course, you can make your pet passive, but it's easier to just dismiss them. Then patiently wait for the conversations to end, and Xuen will blow you you back at the start of each test. Wait for the spirit aggressor to land at least one or two blows on you first before you finish them off. If they can't land any blows on you before you kill them, the quest/test will bug out and you will have to abandon it and start over.

This quest can bug out when killing the spawns too fast. If it does - abandon quest and start it again.
The key for highlevel players is to make sure the NPC's roleplay - talking is done when you kill.

If you kill the spirits too fast, you won't be able to complete the quest. I was able to complete it with Whole-Body Shrinka' (toy).

If you're doing this in the year 2022 at level 60 you need to use the foam sword that can be bought from the toy shop in Dalaran, if you just one shot them the quest bugs.

Just did this quest in Mists of Pandaria Remix and got stuck after passing the two first tests. Flying out of the room and back in again (changing zones) fixed it. I was able to speak to Xuen again and he started the third and last challenge.

Doing this during the Remix event. Playing as a level 70 Warlock with gear 444 and a few pieces at 458.
The issue with the quest not progressing is indeed related to the mob dying too fast.
I tried the flying out and in solution, but didn't work for me.
The Whole Body Shrinka' solution makes the fight too difficult (mobs can damage you quite quickly, and your healing + damage is reduced).

My workaround:
Let the mob hit you - your tinkers will then start auto damaging it
Once around 50% health, start melee auto-attacking
The three mobs I fought were alive just over 5-seconds or so

Taking it slow and steady let me complete the quest. Good luck, have fun :)

There probably is a bug here related to killing them too quickly, but that isn't the only bug. I just completed this in remix wearing an incomplete set 346 gear (missing neck, both rings, one trinket) and despite taking 20-30 seconds on the first two I still had to relog then talk to Xuen in order to trigger the third.
