Grab a War Guardian right after you pick up the quest, it helps a lot (same place as you start the quest).

Weird how you do not get any XP for killing these things.

PET CLASSES:
As a hunter with my pet out, I got no credit for obtaining the war guardian. I had to abandon the quest & log off to get rid of the guardian, then dismiss my pet before getting another guardian to get credit.

Edit:
After that I was able to summon my pet without losing the guardian & complete the quest with both, as they both obeyed the attack command.

Interestingly enough, you don't need the War Guardian to destroy the mushrooms. Great news for Rogues! :)

Just get the guardian after destroying the shrooms and quest complete!

Yeah for some reason the creatures you kill during these two quests, this one and "Sprout no more" won't give you any xp. I only realized this after killing them and my Victory Rush wouldn't pop.

this may help if you have a flying mount(assume would be same for riding mount) and a pet.
I stayed on my bird while accepting quest and picking up guardian. got both. guardian is just a little extra help, a tag-a-long.
