You need to pick up The Lost Apprentice to start this questline.

I accept the quest. I kill one ghost, collect one essence. Then the quest gets abandoned all on its own without me doing a thing. What the hell?

As of 5.4 this quest seems to be bugged. The mobs are not spawning around the ruins, only at the swamp near the edge on the other end. There are barely 10 mobs there, and however the drop rate is quite good (~50%) I still had to wait for respawn timer...

Edit: While you are waiting for the respawn, its a good idea to go down the cliff and kill some gnolls, they have a high droprate of Silk Cloth which is quite expensive in AH these days.

Saw npc when I did intial discovery quest, but went to turn in something else because my quest log was full, came back she's gone no idea how to respawn her.

For any old players who can't see the NPC, I found a modern work around I used to fix the problem. Simply level sync with someone in the area and rework through the quest chain. I flew my little buddy all around for an hour until we got to the part in the chain, and there she was! Did the quests, and as far as I can tell from my 2 trackers and the giant exclamation no longer on my map, the quest has been finished. Unfortunately Blizzard in 2020 has yet to fix this issue, but the sync looks like a real work around!

Still broken as of 10.2.5. I got the quest initially. Went to turn in and she was gone. It isn't needed for Loremaster so I just abandoned them.

Description

You must be careful when you venture forth. Other spirits are bound to this place, malevolent and hateful ones. They've all suffered so much.

None of what they used to be remains, only suffering and a will to live. We will need that will to summon the overlord that keeps me bound here. Please, gather the essence of the spirits, and bring it back to me.
