You actually have to go down to the mouth of the hole in the gaping chasm to find them. South of Bootlegger Outpost. Big beetle looking guys.

edit: I did this quest on an alt and the bugs DID spawn right below - on my main, however - the bugs did NOT spawn below and I had to go to the mouth. Different people may experience different results.

The circle that blizz shows on the map, isn't where you find them, exactly. Go toward the word 'chasm' in the 'gaping chasm' and there is a hole to go down into. The cave has them right out front, I'm including a screenshot of what they look like.

Note that you actually have to throw it near a swarmer. I was trying to treat it like fishing, just cast it and hope something bursts out of the sand and bites...

Very important: once you wrangled a swarmer, head back to the quest giver ... only then you will have 1/1 wrangled swarmer ... you can wrangle even more of them, but it counts only when bringing the swarmer to the destination ... see also the screenshot as proof :)

I've done this and the quest giver didn't finish it. I ended up with 2 bugs and still no quest end!
Have reported the 'bug' (pun intended).

I just finished this Quest. I had to go to the Hole. They are right as you go down, so kill the bugs along the route to the hole then you have a straight run back with no fighting...

I've tried this quest several times and it doesn't work for me. I've wrangled 1 bug and up to 6. But the quest never recognised the swarmer wrangled and does change to a ?. I've tried wrangling at all the locations mentioned in the comments - it doesn't matter. Something is wrong here and I can't work it out.

If you're having trouble, like I did, in getting the quest giver to recognize your bug, try walking around him in a couple circles and try to get the bug a few feet in front him. He does recognize them, it just takes a bit of work.

Important thing to mention. It says to hurry before the Silithid destroys the rope, but I was using the GUIS: gUI AddOn and it showed the exact time (in seconds) that the rope buff will decast: 2127000 seconds. This gives exact 35450 minutes, or the best part of 590 hours.

Unless you are pretending to keep this thing on the rope for too long (or taking a walk into Gadgetzan to show your new pet =^.^= ) don't get too worried about the Silithid attempting to escape.

Simple steps to completing this quest:

Go into the bug area at the bottom of the cliffs (occasionally you may need to venture towards the mouth of the gaping chasm).
Look for a flat blue bug (Hazzali Swarmer).
Use your Bootlegger Bug Bait near the bug - it will come at you.
Do not mount - just walk it back to the quest giver.
Hand in.

I did this quest as of patch 7.1.5, and I immediately understood the Starship Trooper reference. This was a treat.

A Great Idea

Use the Bootlegger Bug Bait to capture a Hazzali Swarmer.

Description

Now that we've got a good pile of fresh chunks, we just tie it to this rope...and now you're ready to go catch me a silithid.

What? Don't give me that look, it's perfectly safe. Well, mostly safe. Okay, you might die painfully. But it'll be easy! Just throw this meat out there, wait for a bug to pounce on it, and then drag 'em back here by the rope!

Go after one of the swarmers. I haven't seen the other ones go for hyenas before, and you should find plenty of swarmers around the edge of the pit.
