A Chilling Ascent starts with The Clerk's Notes.

The Clerk's Notes

Doing the quest

Travel to the Ancient Waygate at Vakthros. (Blue Dragonflight facility).
It's located on top of the tallest tower in the area.
Don't bother equipping the Tricked-Out Thinking Cap. The Cogs-Bolts coordinate system isn't needed in this quest.
Face North and move to the edge of the platform. Look down. There is an active pylon spewing blue energy/magic below you.
Fly down to the pylon. There is a stone tablet at the base. You'll find Amerinth there and the corpses of some Expedition Workers.
Don't bother searching for the door and console mentioned in The Clerk's Notes. There is a door at ground level hidden by spiky icicles. It could be the entrance to a tunnel connecting to the Waygate tower, but it's sealed.
Interact with Amerinth.
Amerinth says,
My employer was researching an ancient legend and learned that these pillars are rumored to contain lost knowledge.
Perhaps that torch of yours can reveal what it holds.
(Amerinth doesn't mention the corpses of Expedition Workers around the pylon.)
The Torch of Pyrreth will automatically ignite if it's on an action bar. When you move near the stone tablet, fire will stream from the torch to a diamond shape embedded in the pylon. The flame activates the tablet.
Inspect the tablet. You'll be asked to trace the writing on the tablet using charcoal. Just click. That's done and you receive A Knowledgeable Descent.
Return to the Rotten Ram Inn in Valdrakken and hand in the quest to Bobby Carlisle.
Bobby Carlisle says,
You found someone trapped up there and the others were dead? Good thing you had that torch!
I don't recognize this text. I'll show it to Preservationist Kathos. Hopefully whatever it says will help up figure out what this group is after.

When you complete A Chilling Ascent, check page 2. If there is a note saying you’ve completed the quest, you can delete The Clerk's Notes.

There's a clerk at General Supplies who's been one of my sources for juicy rumors.

They told me about an expedition to Vakthros in the Azure Span. Sounds like someone was looking for that torch you found.

The clerk saw their map and wrote down some coordinates. Hopefully they'll get you close.
