If you are having trouble figuring out how to fire the gun it's because the mechanic to fire the gun at the barrel is, by default, under the bug reporter. Move the bug reporter up and click. Took me a good long while to figure that out and asking in chat was ZERO help. As usual.

To complete the quest use Flynn's Pistol action button to fire at the water barrel.

After you fire the gun and the recoil knocks you both down, I love the way Flynn Fairwind instantly jumps up and resumes leaning against the pillar like nothing happened! (nothing to see here. really.) :D LOL

Its simpler than outlined here if you need Flynn then talk to Cyrus. Cyrus will start the Ashvane Trading Co quest. As soon as you take that quest, Flynn will go to the Island Expedition Table and talk to you.

I expect you need to do this anyway to unlock Island scenarios.

If you're like me and the Adventure Guide is telling you to continue the Campaign by accepting this quest and Flynn is standing there with a normal quest marker over his head, do that quest first (it should be the quest to obtain 100 explosives). Once you complete that quest, you can come back and Flynn will be in the Harbormaster's Office to offer you Smoking Gun. For some reason, Flynn doesn't offer both quests (I guess it's 2 different spawners).

Description

The Ashvane Company doesn't know it yet, but throwing you into Tol Dagor was the biggest mistake they've ever made. That new powder we swiped could be the key to bringing them down.
