Reading the title of this quest, A True Draenor Angler, I originally thought that I would need some time to catch one rare fish per zone.
I mean, I was chasing after LUNKERS, right? The biggest fishes on Draenor. And on top of everything, it was on Nat Pagle's behalf! So I was expecting some evasive, crafty, devious bastards.

Well, I could not have been more wrong.

In Gorgrond: first lunker caught after 10 casts
In Frostfire Ridge: 7 casts
In Talador: 12 casts
In Spires of Arak: 14 casts
In Shadowmoon Valley: 5 casts
In Nagrand: 18 casts

Come on, Blizzard: Nat Pagle crossed an entire world and you want us to believe that gaining his trust is that easy...
I was really, really disappointed with this quest.

Perhaps my luck was very odd, but I could only catch the required fish when not fishing in a pool. Cast after cast after cast in the specific pools got no lunkers at all, while I caught the needed fish within 4 casts every time outside of a pool.

In Spires, go inland.. I caught my lunker in a pool just down the road from Veil Terrok @ 51.4, 34.9 Took about 3 casts with a +75 Lure and Nats Lure

Buffing up your fishing skill doesn't seem to affect the success rate. With 740 skill, I was able to catch all the lunkers averaging 12 casts per zone.

I caught the last lunker in Frostfire Ridge on my Alliance character. It showed a quest turn-in marker at the Horde garrison location. I went over there just in case, but he wasn't actually there. I had to return to my own garrison to turn in the quest.

You can fish the lunkers in any in-land water. Takes only like a few casts. Since i'm ally i left frostfire zone as my last zone so that i could HS back to the garrison. Fished without any hats and baits. Only Nats special hook.
Also something i noticed is that if you die, then you lose the hook buff and have to re-apply it. Hope this helps

Do NOT start fishing in Frostfire Ridge. I suggest start fishing in any of the other required zones for this quest.

At first the quest and/or Nat's Hookshot did not work. Equipped Ephemeral Fishing Pole, attached Nat's Hookshot to it (NOTE: It only shows up in the friendly buff section next to mini map and cannot be seen on the fishing pole in character pane). Fished in the lava pool just outside the Garrison for 125 casts and didn't catch a Fire Ammonite Lunker.

Read all the posts for this quest again. Dismissed level 3 bodyguard, disabled all add-ons, logged out, closed client and logged back in. Used Fishing Pole, Bone Fishing Pole and went back to Ephemeral Fishing Pole. Tried with and without Worm Supreme. No luck. Abandoned quest and picked it back up (and yes, Nat's Hookshot was reapplied, and yes, fishing was capped at 700 skill points).

Then headed to fishing cove east of Garrison and didn't catch a Fire Ammonite Lunker for 50 casts. Hearthed back to Garrison and flew to Nagrand on a whim.

The results were as follows.

Nagrand - Fat Sleeper Lunker: 11 casts off Throne of Elements flight point
Talador - Blackwater Whiptail Lunker: 6 casts off Durotan's Grasp flight point
Spires of Arak - Abyssal Gulper Lunker: 7 casts off Crow's Crook flight point
Shadowmoon Valley - Blind Lake Sturgeon Lunker: 9 casts off Darktide Roost flight point
Gorgrond - Jawless Skulker Lunker: 5 casts off Bastion Rise flight point
Frostfire Ridge - Fire Ammonite Lunker: 6 casts in the lava pool outside (Horde) Garrison

Note: Walked around the pool to face Garrison (Horde) while fishing. Previous spot was just outside the Garrison entrance facing the zone. Figured that that part of the big lava pool may be considered part of the Garrison and not zone (fluke, bug, or just plain bad assumption).

Hope this post helps those who were as frustrated with this quest as was I at the start, especially after reading that most people got their lunkers after a few casts (as did I when I went to other zones first).

After completing the Draenor Angler achievement I was expecting this to be another long grind, but it was surprisingly easy and quick. A few casts in each zone and I was done!

Do NOT fish on the coast. I tried to get the SMV lunker for about a half an hour and found nothing.

Also, make sure when you're doing Frostfire Ridge your "sub zone" above your map does not read your garrison! I got my Fire Ammonite Lunker on the first cast just outside my garrison.

Burning Legion.
fisherman with 700skill + fishing rod +100 (fished in Dreanor) + fishing hat +100 (also fished in Draenor) + lure gave at start. nothing else.

went to the closest lake near alliances garrison. took me ~15 tries to fish it.
went to spires of arak, lakes south from Crow's Crook. took me ~15 tries to fish it.
went to terokkar refuge in Talador - 8 tries and quest item was mine
went to telaari station in Nagrand and lake right from the city - around 12 tries.
went to evermorn springs west from Deeproot in Gorgrond - smallest lake, closest to Deeproot - 10 attempts
went to Frostfire Ridge, small inland lava lake north from Gruuk elite, south east from Gurun elite. 1 try and a success.

1) didnt fish in schools. tried once in arak but school vanished before i catch.
2) all that time, my private bodyguard was with me, so his presence didnt affect.
3) i believe that all of you will say that worse part of this chain quest was to catch 100 of enormous fishes of all kind than getting those.
4) weird thing happened after those. question mark told me that nat is in cave south from my last spot. after few relogs i decided to teleport to my garrison. fortunately nat was where i've seen him last time :)

Okay, I'm struggling with this. I fished my butt off to catch 100 the enormous whatchamacallits. I've got the Draenor Angler achievement. I have Nate as a follower, and I have him working in my Level 3 Fishing Shack. I've been fishing all over Draenor and catching plenty of 'enormous' fish, but no Lunkers.

I don't have Nate's Hookshot. I've never had it. I have no idea where to get it.

When I go see Nate, he shows the blue question mark, but does not offer me the necessary lure. When I fish, the 'angler' buff does not appear (not in my character box, nor next to my map--nowhere).

Any idea how I go about getting the necessary lure in order to carry out this quest?

ETA: Okay, I've done this quest on an alt. Piece of cake--maybe 10-12 casts each zone. The Nate's "hookshot" was in my bags and the buff appeared next to the lure buffs when I was fishing. So I know it can be done; just no explanation for the trouble my main has been having...

All of them took me 2-20 casts. I had only supreme worm + ephemeral fishing pole + 700 skill and no other bait. I fished in random waters

These quest fish must be found in their respective zones. For example: You can't find a Fire Ammonite Lunker in Nagrand even though there is a lava pool there that rewards Fire Ammonite. I haven't tested for lunkers after the quest.

Some of these posts seem to be referring to the fished lunkers you get after this quest. The lunkers you need for this quest will not show up in your bag as an item, it will only affect your quest progress. They should be fished up relatively quickly (~15-30 casts) in their respective zones when you have the Nat's Hookshot Bait buff.

Frostfire zone, dont bother fishing in ocean, after 54 casts, nothing. Fish in the lava, 22 cast win! All other zones, lakes and rivers close to FP was easily fished up the quest item withing 2-30 casts. Don't use unique fish items with 5 min buff as they over ride the buff item from quest.

TL;DR: All you need is the quest item given you by Nat for the buff when you use it. How few/many casts it takes to get each lunker is simply up to how well RNGesus loves you :3

Details for those interested:

After using a Bone Fishing Pole and Worm Supreme in SMV (where I started because am Alliance), and running around fishing in Schools thinking that was my best way to get it, I wondered and looked up the quest.

SMV took me about 20ish casts to get the lunker with method just stated. I then went to Crow's Crook in Spires, ran to the nearest lil pond there and casted away w/o worrying about fishing in a school, but still using Pole/Lure on top of the buff. Got my lunker in about ~15 casts.

Moved on to Talador and I truly wondered, removed pole and lure, took a few casts then thought to FRAPS it and the result is the video linked above- got my lunker with nothing but basic 700 fishing and Nat's item buff in only 6 casts...

Did the rest of the zones w/o pole/lure and results were similar. Frostfire was 12 casts, (in the big lava pool in centerish of zone) Gorgrond was 6 casts (in the small pool just down the path from Wildwood Wash FP)

Took me around 10 catch per fish in open water (700 fishing + Nat's Hat +150 fishing buff). Chose an area near a fly master.

You do not need a fishing rod equipped, and conventional lures are unnecessary. The only requirement is that you use the lure that Nat provides you with.

My results of fishing for the Lunkers with zero enhancements and no fishing rod equipped (Fishing skill of 700):

Frostfire Lunker: 8 casts
Gorgrond Lunker: 9 casts
Nagrand Lunker: 13 casts
Talador Lunker: 16 casts
Spires of Arak Lunker: 7 casts
Shadowmoon Valley Lunker: 15 casts

I started with Shadowmoon right outside of my garrison. I sh*t you not it took over 40 casts to get this lunker. Then I came back at it the next day, noticed my shadowmoon lunker went from "complete" to needing ANOTHER SHADOWMOON LUNKER. So two things: this quest is bugged and might need to be completed all in one day.... and secondly, for everyone bragging about 7 cast catches, you effers can effing eff right the effing eff off! EFFITY EFFITY EFF BUGGED QUESTS!

Isn't Nat supposed to be back at the Fishing Hut when you finish the quest? I don't see any comments about turning this quest in when you are done. Nat isn't at my Fishing Hut where I left him when I accepted the quest.

You can catch the Shadowmoon fish (blind lake sturgeon lunker) off of Darktide Roost. That's a bit easier to get to for Horde as you get the fp from a garrison campaign.

You can do this quest even if you're below 700 skill points, I had around 580 and just had the Worm Supreme to get me over 700.

Edit: Just caught a lunker with only the Hightfish Cap, which got me to 693 skill only.

I did the Luring Nat questline last night; Nat Pagle has been back at my garrison for awhile and is offering me free bait and everything. However, I did not get this quest. My shack is obviously level 3, my fishing skill is 700 pre-buffs, and he's in my garrison... but no quest available or in my quest log. Am I missing something that I need to do in order to get this quest? The only one available was the fishing daily.

POSSIBLE BUG:

I encountered a possible bug and have been talking to Blizzard about it involving this quest and they asked me to post it here. I have a 700 fishing skill, running WoW on Mac OS 10.9.5.

After I got the level 3 fishing shack, and recruited Nat Pagle, and started his quests for catching lunkers of each fish type, lunkers I caught in shadowmoon valley of sturgeon would not register in the quest if caught from a pool. I was using his hookshot bait, pandaren dragon pole + line enchant, plus worm supreme—with or without pheromone fish.

Also, after getting the level 3 shack, my drop rates went to 0 for hook lures and worm supreme in normal fishing areas outside of the Garrison in any zone. I simply got none.

Eventually I was able to catch lunkers in open water (not pools) that registered in the quest, but only after the following:

I was unable to catch a lunarfall carp inside the garrison after 40-60 minutes of fishing the waters, so was basically stuck, as I could not push my skill level high enough to catch lunkers in other zones or in open water in shadowmoon—at least it appeared that way.

After doing some dailies I returned to the Garrison and finally caught 2 lunarfall carp, tossed it in the water (one at a time + killing the cavedweller), got the cavedweller to spawn twice, and got 2 x 7-day hats (I used the tentacled hat), the 1 day pole, and 5 or 6 worm supreme and some other buffs and items.

Fishing open waters now worked in all zones quickly. I tried with and without worm supreme, and pheromone fish when I caught one, and results were the same:

• 700 skill + hat (+100) + ephemeral pole (+100) + worm supreme (+200) + pher fish (+100)
• 700 skill + hat (+100) + ephemeral pole (+100) + worm supreme (+200)
• 700 skill + hat (+100) + ephemeral pole (+100)

So, with a fishing skill of 900, 1100, or 1200 I was able to catch lunkers in 1.5-5 minutes regardless of zone or combination. In less than an hour I could catch all the fish using flight points, complete the quest with Nat, and unlock the lunker quests. I use Nat's raft, so I just sit in water inside the zone (not on the coast) and just fish for a few minutes until I catch one.

If you guys run into this, it would be good to post it here as they will be testing this to nail down the glitch. My advice is to keep fishing garrison waters until you get the carp, as that seemed to make things work right again.

I had no issues so I wanted to share in the chance it might help someone. I decided to stick to random lakes/ponds near flight paths and completed the quest in about 30 minutes! I am at level 700 fishing. No lures attached. I use Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole as my pole.

My order:

Shadowmoon Valley- due west of Exile's Rise, right outside of the garrison
*8 casts
Spires of Arak- a few steps south of Crow's Crook
*11 casts
Talador- right next to Anchorite's Sojourn
*4 casts
Nagrand- right next to Telaari Station
*9 casts
Gorgrond- right next to Highpass
*15 casts
Frostfire Ridge- follow the path south of Iron Siegeworks
*10 casts

I then hearthed to my garrison to turn in and claim Nat as my own-- I mean, as a follower.

(I fished out a pool in each zone and did NOT catch one in a pool so take 4-5 from each number)

Nagrand 7th (fished another 25 and found out you CAN NOT fish for more (different items))
Talador 17th

SMV 4th (no pool)
Gorgrond 2nd (no pool)
FFR 17th

I personally caught all of my lunkers out of the fishing pools. Each Lunker I caught took under 20 casts each. At first I tried catching the Lunkers in fishing pools and got up to 70 casts for one Lunker before I gave up and tried fishing out of the pools. Try it! It'll work!

Okay let's do some ~~fun~~ maths/calculations!

1. In patch 6.2 you CAN have more than FIVE (5) of one type of these lunker fish in your inventory! So you can fish up as many as you like and hand them all in when you are ready.

2. One Lunker = 350 Nat rep. 1 Lunker also = 1 Nat's Lucky Coin

3. Fishing Buddy addon reports the chance to get a Lunker (after catching 10) is roughly 2.5%. This is a bit of a rough estimate though as I only counted after 10. FYI this is at 805 fishing. A recent mod post said with patch 6.2, better fishing would result in more Lunkers!

4. It took me 1 hour and 19 minutes to catch 10 Lunkers (YMWV!)

5. Based on this very ROUGH estimation. It would take you roughly 1.38 days to be able to buy the Reins of the Crimson Water Strider for 250 lucky coins. That is also provided you could catch 10 every 1 hour and 20-ish minutes. 250 coins = 87500 Nat rep which is enough for best friend status.

So basically it shouldn't take you more than 2 days of hardcore (keyword) fishing to get the mount and make Nat your bestie.

Anyway, on my shammy I had this quest and I tested it for lunker drops and I got 12 in 20 minutes.
Wish I new this back in december.

they stack to 20 now so if your on this quest Id keep it for now but its your call.

Server: US-Mal'ganis (Horde)
Fishing Skill: 735 with Dragon Fishing Pole and Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat. Don't forget to use Nat Pagle's Hookshot, otherwise you can't catch lunkers.

I wanted to test this to see what the chances of each catch were for someone who may only have 700 fishing skill and not many items. I should have taken off the hat and used a basic pole, but hopefully the additional 35 fishing won't matter that much.

The locations I used, in order:

Frostfire Ridge (50,59): 48 casts; 11 minutes, 20 seconds.
Gorgrond (43, 80): 14 casts; 3 minutes, 4 seconds.
Talador (68,12): 11 casts; 2 minutes, 21 seconds.
Nagrand (73, 26): 5 casts; 1 minute, 18 seconds.
Spires of Arak (51, 33): 6 casts; 1 minute, 16 seconds.
Shadowmoon Valley (61, 81): 15 casts; 3 minutes, 15 seconds.

The reason I chose these locations is because they are right next to or extremely close to a flight path. I had no preplanning, just lazy and wanted to land, fish, then move on.

In Frostfire Ridge I was fishing in the large lake of lava and decided to move to the small puddle/pond next to it around cast 40. In the small puddle/pond I caught a lunker in 8 casts. There is usually a pool here, but don't fish in it. From what I've read, you can't catch lunkers in pools. Please correct me if I'm wrong though.

In Shadowmoon Valley I was fishing along the coast, not the small pond next to the flight path.

Something to note. Once you complete the quest you no longer have/need the hookshot. Assign Nat Pagle to your Fishing Shack and with his Angler trait, you no longer need items/bait to catch lunkers.

This is probably not a "legit" strategy but here is what worked for me:

After looking around Frostfire Ridge for 20 minutes for pools and fishing out of them with no luck, I read a comment on here saying to just fish out of the lava/water instead of looking for schools of fish. Looted a Lunker within 10 casts.

Upon entering the next zone and all subsequent zones I clicked off the buff for my fishing pole and reapplied it.

I never fished in a school, only in water and chose flight paths with water directly beside them or quite close to make it faster travel-wise.

The last three zones I looted the Lunker within 2 casts.

A True Draenor Angler and An Angler on Our Team were buggy for me.

Skill: 700 fishing + Dragon Fishing Pole + Nat's Hat + lure: Sharpened Fish Hook or Worm Supreme) +Nat's Hookshot bait.

I started in Shadowmoon Valley at the bottom of the falls near 57,62 and moved to the top of the falls. Caught 104 Enormous Blind Lake Sturgeon and 55 Blind Lake Sturgeon.

Tried many things - replacing my fishing pole with a weapon, then re-equipping fishing pole, hat, lure, Nat's Hookshot bait. No lunker. I finally returned to my Fishing Shack, abandoned the quest and accepted it again. Went to Talador. Success in 10 casts. Went to Nagrand to fish at the bottom of the falls below Hallvalor. Success - but wait - the quest check list counted the catch as a Frostfire Ridge lunker. So I moved to the next water hole and fished up a lunker that was credited to Nagrand.

At last I returned to my Fishing Shack and accepted An Angler on Our Team. I clicked "Complete" and got the "you fail" noise. I closed, but didn't abandon the quest. I reopened the quest description and the "Complete" button worked.

Next I fished up Lunarfall Carp in my lake. Tried to throw it into the lake and got a message in red across the screen: "You must be at your Garrison lake". After 3 tries it worked. Wrote up 2 bug tickets. My advice...keep trying.

As of 4/27/15 I was able to complete this quest. It was still a molten catfish, however there was an option to speak to Nat, something about "wow, I've looked everywhere for you, blah blah blah" The gray question mark then turned yellow and I was able to complete. Yay

I decided to go ahead and do this quest today 8/17/2015. For the Horde, I started @ Wol 'Var in Nagrand. I use Fishing Buddy so I left the timer on for the whole trip. I was using a Dragon fishing pole from The Anglers, a Tentacled Fishing Hat, a Worm Supreme, and of course Nat's Hookshot. Total fishing level was 1030 (up to 1130 for 5 minutes with one Fragrant Pheromone Fish in SoA). I did not use any fish bait nor did I fish in any pools. Just straight fishing with level boosters and the regular water (or lava in FFR)

I stayed in a pattern from Wol 'Var in Nagrand, to Terokkar Refuge in Talador, to Crow's Crook in Spires of Arak, to Exile's Rise in Shadowmoon Valley, to Bastion Rise in Gorgrond, and finally to Frostfire Ridge (Frostfire Approach) just outside the garrison.

In each location I used the water right off the flight points (except in Shadowmoon of course since there isn’t any water near there so I traveled southward to just southwest of Embarri Village). Using only the afore mentioned fishing equipment, flight points, and standard mounts (no super-fast rare or outpost mounts), here’s what I got:

As Ally you can skip going to Frostfire Ridge.

Fishing in Nagrand, just South of Hallvalor, coords 88.84, 60.09, you can catch Fire Ammonite fish and the lunker that is usually caught in Frostfire Gorge.

So here I am, doing this evil quest.
I cast my line in a couple times in 2 pools and by the 3rd one I get a blind lake lunker (right outside my garrison in the lake), but one of the blue ones, I thought that's what I needed so I move to the next zone (even though my questlog was like no this doesn't count, I didn't know why).
I keep casting and fishing in and out of pools and nada.
Finally I swapped to the bone fishing pole, 2 casts later, boom. (Right outside crows crook) I realize that it greyed out but wasn't showing in my bag so.. lightbulb.
I went back to the same spot I was fishing for my lunker originally in SMV, and within 10 min I had the lunker, onto Gorgrond and less than 10m later boom.
I'm still working on it, but that has been my luck so far.

After fishing in Arak for hours, both in and out of pools, with no lunkers in my bags and refreshing the buff every few minutes, I finally figured out how to fix the issue. I posted a bug. I don't think Bliz had more than 2 minutes to fix it after I posted before HALLILUYER~ I caught one. -_- ...

Just in case anyone was wondering "Do you need to have a pole equipped?" -- you don't. Found that out because I found myself in Shadowmoon as a Hordie wanting to try this, and didn't want to go back to my garrison for a fishing pole.

You can catch each Lunker in each zone in open water with or without pools. My fishing was 700 with a 400+ increase and caught all of my Lunkers in open water.

Not having luck fishing in the lava pools. I wonder if fishing along the coast is what one needs to do.

Moments after posting I caught the lunker in a pool just outside of where Horde Garrison would be.

Fishing up lunkers takes awhile. In shadow moon I get the Blind lunkers but not the quest related one. lol

I don't know what's wrong with me, but I have been fishing for over an hour, maintaining about 900+ skill, and have only caught the Spires fish ( after about 20 minutes). Shadowmoon has been over forty five minutes, with four blue lunkers but no quest item.
Came here looking for advice, and all I see is everyone getting them < 20 casts.

Yes I am using the Nat's lure.
I am so done for today
I sincerely hate the RNG related bull%^&* in this game. It always bites me like this.

Don't try to catch these from shores, you will get sea scorpions instead. I was a bit tired when doing this quest, fished for an hour on the shore of talador before realising I should be fishing inland.

I am not sure if any updates were added between 6.0 and 6.2.3, however I do not think a max of 5 lunkers is still relevant. In Shadowmoon Valley, I fished up 15 Blind Lake Lunkers within the course of 2 hours. I fished up these lunkers at 700 fishing skill and +30 Dragon Fishing Pole, all in fishing pools, without a Level 3 fishing shack. Once I obtained a level 3 shack, I was still catching Blind Lake Lunkers at the same rate, however, I am not able to catch any other lunkers to finish up the first Nat Pagle questline. After 4+ hours, I have no received any lunkers (besides Blind Lake), even for the quest. I am now up to 20 Blind Lake Lunkers.

Anyone else experience this?

Just to confirm, the Lunkers needed for the quest are actual quest items; e.g Blind Lake Sturgeon Lunker. NOT the rare quality fish, like Blind Lake Lunker used to turn in for Nat's Lucky Coin.

Took me about twenty minutes start to finish. Used a worm supreme for 934 fishing skill for the first three zones (Shadowmoon, Arak, Talador), but let it fall off after and had 734. I caught my "Frostfire" one in Nagrand, near Hallvalor where you can fish Fire Ammonite. Overall, not so bad.

Not sure if I have the worst luck ever or if I tech was not in the zone, but I fished for about 45 min along the shores of Spires and didn't catch what I needed, but flew inland and fished it out of a pond in less than 5 mins, so my advice is don't waste your time on the coasts!

Well, I must be doing it alllll wrong...but I'm still catching lunkers.

I'm fishing in pools, and I'm, wearing and using the Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat, and I didn't explicitly "use" the Nate's Hookshot Bait, though I do see the buff on my screen, in addition to the lure buff. Catching 'em just fine with a skill of 810.

DO NOT FISH THESE UP FROM POOLS! You can catch them in pools, but it takes forever.

I used pools in Shadowmoon and Nagrand (where I also knocked off Frostfire), and it took me forever--about 50 casts in Shadowmoon and 30 for the others. Once I switched to open waters, it became so much faster, only taking about a dozen casts in Gorgrond, Talador, and Spires.

The quest: A True Draenor Angler. Quick How to walk through.

In a pattern from Wol'Var in Nagrand, to Terokkar Refuge in Talador, to Crow's Crook in Spires of Arak, to Exiles Rise in Shadowmoon Valley, to Bastion rise in Gorgrond, and finally to Frostfire Ridge (Frostfire Approach) just outside the Garrison.
Use the waters closest to the Flight Paths, with the exception of Exile's Rise, for there just fly south to Embarri Village. The stream running through the village, just place yourself away from the road if you're Horde.
With fishing skill of 700, I used Nate's Hookshot bait, the Tentacled Hat +100, the Ephemeral fishing pole +100, and Worm Supreme +200, giving me a total of 1100 fishing.
Took me about 30 minutes, give or take, using flight paths, and not fishing any schools.

My map showed quest completion to be in Frostridge. I wandered around the question mark for a while, finally gave up and came back to my garrison and Nat was waiting at the fishing shack to complete the quest. Did this happen to other people?

Agree with all the comments below saying no need for pools & open water fine.

If it's helpful, my natural fishing skill is 700 but is boosted to 845 with gear & lures.

N.B. Attach Nat's Hookshot to your pole & top of your screen will display the icon with tool tip, if you hover over it, of "Nat's Hookshot Bait. Attracts Lunkers to your fishing pole in Draenor."

I therefore believe that attaching that item is essential, so don't forget like I did at first.

Three casts was my fastest, but I didn't count beyond that.

My map showed also showed that quest completion was in Frostridge, but I flew straight to my Garrison & *stops typing to land* there he was at my fishing shack.

I don't think that some places have increased chance of catching these fish. I see in the comments below that some say specific places but seems its just RNG and luck as i just flew in each zone, cast few times in open waters and got them. Maybe 30 minutes all together, same as the others. Hope this helped and happy RNG to all! XD

Random interesting thing I found, I was able to fish up a Fire Ammonite Lunker in Nagrand at 89,60. Handy if you're alliance and hate Frostfire Ridge ^_^ (yes, it counted for Frostfire Ridge for the quest)

After catching lunkers in all areas, I ended up in Frostfire Ridge to get the last one. 210 fish later, I was going out of my mind!
I started pondering what could be wrong... I re-applied the lure so many times... I went to new fishing spots until I had pretty much been all around the coast.... I re-logged... I fought horde NPC's to get to another Shamanstone just in case the buff I had somehow interfered with catching the lunker... I even tried fishing pools, despite all info here and my own experience with catching the lunkers in open water in other areas. It was all in vain - I got no lunker.

In the end, I went to where the horde garrison would be if I could see it, and I fished in the cave there. Caught my lunker in 5th cast.

Dunno if it was just my luck or if it's general, but thought I'd leave this here in case anyone else is doing this quest years too late and end up having the same trouble.

(Edit: P.S. As others have noted, you can see a question mark to hand in the quest in the horde garrison even though you are Alliance, but you can't really. Go home :-))

This was a lot easier than I was initially led to believe. If you do not yet have flying ability then it will take longer to complete. With flying ability, it took about 2 hours to complete, and that was with testing.

Make sure you've enabled the lure provided for the quest. Once you get to a zone, i.e. Shadowmoon Valley, just fish. There doesn't have to be a fishing swirl and you don't have to have any additional lure or bait. I used "Seth's Graphite Fishing Pole" which gives +10 fishing. Every step that got you here is all you need.

I tried fishing in both swirls and open water, with and without lures. My cast average for all zones was around 12, no matter what I tried.

no need to fish in pools aye ! but just a heads up. got the frostfire Lunker in Nagrand! so had to go back and fish the Nagrand lunker. can be a pain if u don´t have flyin.. around 10-15 catches in all the zones before the lunker. have Nat´s Hat and Underlight Angler. Nice hunting folks

Has anyone tried this quest recently, i.e. post prepatch? I've spent two hours using fishing hat, lure and nat's bait and have not looted a single lurker yet.

It may have just been my bad luck, but if you're Horde, don't waste your time trying to fish up Fire Ammonite Lunker if you're within your garrison zone (the garrison zone specifically, not Frostfire Ridge), despite the map showing it can be fished up from that area. Maybe it can only be fished up there by Alliance.

With all the activities one can do in the wide world of WoW, why would someone spend their time fishing? I am reminded why I only do fishing tasks for so long before moving on to other things. I have been at it for about 3hrs (with interruptions, grabbing dinner, cleaning up after dinner, etc, cuz what psychopath would actually click to cast and click to reel in for 3 hrs straight?) and i only have lurkers from 2 zones. Frostfire Ridge happened within 6-9 minutes...I am now referring to that as 'baiting the hook' as it took me quite some time to get Nagrand, then I unsuccessfully fished Talador before moving on to Spires of Arak. I keep saying, just a few more and when I get this next lurker I'll stop. Except the next lurker won't come up!

Save the energy and fish the Frost lunker in Nagrand at 86,60. I got it after 5 attempts (after spending 30+ minutes on three locations in Frost).

Hello All,

I am aware that the Lunkers required for the quest are not shown in bags (just like most other items required for most other quests these days).
What I am asking is this: will the Lunkers that I have fished before in Pandaria, before getting this quest, which Lunkers DO show up in the bags, WILL THEY, by being present in the bags/inventory, PREVENT me from being able to fish out the Lunkers required for the Quest (which Lunkers don't show in the inventory once you have fished them, they just mark the corresponding step in the Quest as 'Completed')?

Frostfire Ridge seems wonky. All the rest were maybe 5-20 casts. 45 minutes in frost fire didn't work until my first cast at 32.08 17.03

I used Underlight Angler, Oversized Bobber, Aquadynamic Fish Attractor, and Nat's Hookshot.

Fire Ammonite Lunker in 12 casts, in Frostfire Ridge, north of the garrison, at 51, 59.
Blackwater Whiptail Lunker in 13 casts, in Talador, on Duskfall Island, at 68, 58.
Blind Lake Sturgeon Lunker in 16 casts, in Shadowmoon Valley, right outside of Embaari Village at Arbor Glen, at 47, 35.
Abyssal Gulper Lunker in 2 casts, in Spires of Arak, at The Undergrowth, at 51, 32.

TL;DR:
If you are unable to get the quest item and have the rare lunkers in your bag, put enough in your bank to be below 5 in inventory.

Long Form:

Something that just happened to me. Not sure if it's confirmation bias but:

In the previous steps to unlock Nat in my garrison, I had fished up the Rare Quality Blind Lake Lunker. 8 to be exact (even though it says you can only hold 5 but this might be updated).

I then got to the step to do the quest A True Draenor Angler. I fished for a good 5 minutes and got nothing. I then went to my bank in my garrison and deposited 4 of the 8 Blind Lake Lunker leaving 4 in my bags.

I then went outside my garrison and instantly caught the quest item Blind Lake Sturgeon Lunker.

I hope this helps others.

EDIT: Seems it was confirmation bias. Went to Spires of Arak and still fishing after 30 minutes. Still worth a shot if you are having trouble.

I spent HOURS trying to fish for these stupid things in pools... only to read a comment elsewhere that you cannot catch them from pools. Make sure that you are using Nats hook and just fish anywhere in the region. That's how you catch them. Caught them all in like 30 minutes total after I stopped fishing in pools.
