Can anyone clarify why he gives us one ilvl 640 and one ilvl 680 ring if they can't be worn together? Why not just upgrade the one a la Karazhan?

Edit (11-21-14): For anyone thinking that you can purchase the other ilvl 640/680 rings from Zooti Fizzlefury to equip them at the same time as the others, you cannot. All rings sold by Zooti or given to you by Khadgar are unique from eachother, meaning you can only wear one at a time. On the upside, spending 800g for a second one just to keep in my bags did boost my ilvl by 3 points. Sooo, worth it?

Upon accepting the quest, Archmage Khadgar creates a portal that allows you to travel back to his tower. Upon arriving back:

Cordana Felsong says: Incredible work. The archmage would be lost without you!

As you walk into the tower:

Return to Khadgar's Tower Complete 1/1

Speak with Archmage Khadgar.

Do you have your ring with you? Good! Are you ready?

Hold on to your helm, hunter!

"I am ready, Archmage."

Archmage Khadgar says: I know now how to defeat Gul'dan's magic and reveal the Shadow Council. But we'll need more power.
Archmage Khadgar says: We will have to tear artifacts from the very heart of the Ogre Empire.
Archmage Khadgar says: I can help you. Let us augment the power of that ring of yours...
Archmage Khadgar says: Hold out your hand, and step into the light!

Archmage Khadgar steps back off the platform and begins casting. Back into the light, you'll be knocked to the ground and lose about 10% of your health.

Archmage Khadgar says: I'm sorry, I should've mentioned that you would be... slightly killed.

You get knocked down one more time.

I've noticed this is the second time Khadgar says he needs "more power"

I wonder if he's gonna end up getting too much power, and blowing up Draenor into another Outland

No matter which type of ilvl 640 ring you acquired before, your loot specialization determines which ilvl 680 ring he gives you at the completion of this quest.

Meaning that as a Disc Priest that wanted the Timeless Solium Band of the Archmage instead of the default-for-my-loot-specialization one (Timeless Solium Band of Lifegiving), I simply changed my loot specialization to Shadow right before handing in the quest and got the Archmage one for the versatility and mastery.
