Once you accept the quest from Instructor Xann, run back into The Practice Pit. There are some neutral mobs called "Training Bag". These are the mobs that you need to kill for the quest.

However, Instructor Xann will do emotes on screen with either "LEFT!" or "RIGHT!". When you see this, it is key that you are attacking the correct bag, as the other one will recieve a buff that allows it to absorb 99% of all incoming damage.

Essentially, you just need to switch when Xann calls for it, and the bags will die eventually.

EDIT: When I did this yesterday, the bags did need to be at full health. If you are not getting the quest complete text, start on a set of bags with 100% health.

In front of some of the training bags you will see Chun Tian Students practicing as well. They are training under the same instructions from Instructor Xann, so if you are having trouble with watching for the "LEFT" and "RIGHT" emotes, you can watch the students and just attack the same training bags that they are attacking.

Maybe good to mention.

For you to complete the objectives you need to start fighting on bags with full life. Else you don't complete it when they die. Happened for me atleast.

This quest is much easier than it looks. In all likelihood you are here on Wowhead because the quest didn't complete for you.

As of the latest beta patch before release, there is a small "bug" with this quest where you must be extremely close to the bags when you kill them. Additionally, killing the wrong target by accident (with leftover dots, or poor switching) will not give you credit.

I just got it by doing the following:

1. Seen someone who had their bags almost done

2. Gave them some hits in the left, and right rotation.

3. Bags get destroyed and you get credit.

Having just done this (after several failed attempts) I can confirm that this quest is working.

Here's how..

After picking up this quest, head on over to the training dummies in the court yard. You are not supposed to be in a vehicle, if you are somehow, dismount.

Pick a dummy and take it down to a percentage you are comfortable with and lose the dots. You don't want anything killing it by mistake. I took mine down to about 10%, then switched off Seal of Truth, beat on it until about 5%, then back pedaled out of melee range.

Meanwhile instructor Xann is shouting out sides. If you see a debuff on the side you're attacking, switch sides, it will absorb 99% of the damage. They do have a shared health pool, this is why it's important to remove all dots.

Finally when you get down to the last few thousand HP, be careful. I used my Hammer of Wrath to finish off the side that was called. If you do this successfully, the second bag will break soon after and you will have credit for both.

Don't worry if you go out of combat, it will still work as long as you kill the side that Instructor Xann shouts out.

tl;dr
Stop Dots, attack the side Xann shouts out, go out of melee range, use ranged carefully.

As a monk, do not kill the bags with Touch of Death. It won't give you credit for the kills.

I think it works like this:

Dot and DPS as you like until the 2 sandbags are at 500k left, of course switch to make more DPS. Look at the panda disciple who is hitting it, so that you will hit the correct target. You can hit the same sandbag as the pandas. Stop dotting at 500k and DPS both targets down untill 100k health points.

Now the crucial time comes.

Dont use any Dots and dont hit the wrong target. If you kill off the bag which has the 99% shieldwall debuff and it dies, you wont get the kill. So, be very careful and better stop damage, if you arent sure, that a switch will apear soon. Only DPS sth like 3 secs after a switch and then better stop. Wait for the next switch and only make 2 "non dot" attacks, stop and wait for the next switch.

It worked for me this way..

Use the middle two bags, the ones without students.

Scroll back as far as possible with the camera

You'll notice the beams attacking the bags, stay in synch with those, and the quest is done in a few minutes.

I really wish they had made it a touch more obvious that you were to hit left and right on ***ONE*** set of bags... not switch from groups of bags, or hit outside bags only.

I believe this Quest may be bugged. As a Warlock, I was doing this quest for a good 5 minutes, at least, watching the left then the right bag decrease in "health" 1 to 2 points at a time. When I finally got them to 0 health, they disappeared and the Instructor kept calling out "Left" and "Right"! Incredibly frustrating. I deleted this quest and certainly won't be doing it on any other character.

I had a little trouble with this quest. After having tried more than a few times over while following advice read in the comments here I was getting a little frustrated with this quest to the point of ignoring it.

I logged out and back in some time later, logged in and it then completed. Odd.

OK, just did this on my dest lock. Here's how. Pick up quest & stand behind one of the students. Put your minion on passive - you don't want it hitting the last target you aimed at. As the instructor yells out the 'Left' 'Right' instructions, hit the bags with two casts of Incinerate. Although you "may" be able to hit each bag with three casts, it's better if you don't - just do two casts, then switch bags as he calls it out, and hit that one with two casts of Incinerate. Don't use any other spells - just Incinerate. Keep switching back and forth until you get both bags down to '0' and get credit for the quest.

I minimized WoW to check the site and see why it wasn't updating. After a mess of strategy suggestions, I came back and it had given me credit as previous comments suggested. I used lots of DOTs and multi-target spells for one set, and worked in tandem with another (ungrouped) player for the other. So, I would popping back into the game to see if it fixed on it's own. ^.^

imo if the quest is bugged or not, i have tried the suggestions on the site from all the people and imo i think it is one of the worst quests ever imo. ive done some of the other quests that are terrible and was finally able to complete them.
this quest just frankly gets on my last nerve. lol

Just pick 2 bags that are at 100% health with nothing or no one else hitting them and take them all the way down and it will work. Ignore whatever that right left stuff is saying.

After doing this three times and not getting a quest complete indication, I read a post on the WoW forums that explains it.

2/3rds of the punching bag models are placed BACKWARDS in the environment, meaning you'd have to hit those in the opposite order for it to work. They have a front and a back to the model and it knows which bag you have to hit by the direction it's facing.

Make sure you are using the bags where the yellow circle on the top of the front post is facing you. If you don't see the yellow circle, that model is placed backwards and it won't work.

I'm sure this will be fixed at some point, but for now, that's the deal.

Don't try this as a Demo Lock.

Hand of Gul'Dan ticks both dummies and the ones around it, the splash damage is dangerous if your quest fails to register.

If your demon kills it, you wont get the kill.
If your wild imp kills it, you won't get the kill.
If your DoT kills it, you won't get the kill.

Whos idea was this anyway?

I tried this a few times as protection paladin with my abilities and without, switching each time and everything and nothing completed as others have reported. I started again, not even switching sides, just hammering away on the left bag with my auto attack...and then I left him there, went away did a heavy squat workout and some bagwork myself, then drank some cooper's ale, came back and the quest was completed. Easier than sitting there getting frustrated in front of the screen.

With my Affliction Warlock with my pet on passive, I started with Curse of the elements on both and then alternated between the two punching bags keeping our main three DOTs (Agony, Corruption, Unstable Affliction) up on both. It did not matter which punching bag was being called out and they both eventually blew up. The curse had a bit around 1:30 mins left before I completed the quest.

I'm guesing that Instructor Xann's warning that you will soon need to switch back and forth between targets very quickly is a reference to the upcoming fight with Strife and Anger in the Temple of the Jade Serpent.

I'm sorry but a lot of what is being said is garbage. A bug is a bug and there could be many different ways to complete this. Hence this post and what i am about to say.

I have a DK and completed it just fine....

My lock with no pet and following the directions sent me here and getting seriously annoyed, but thats what games do to us and hopefully someone got fired for this crap.

I tried for 20 min just attacking the bags with my staff...wen tfrom 2.4M to 1.8..then i said," PWND" I attacked everything in the area ( 6 bags in total) and cast everything i had. 3 seconds later....

"Quest Complete" really? Please use OUR money wisely and hopefully the next path isn't called "My little pony" with unicorn mounts.

I just did this and first and foremost THIS IS THE DUMBEST FREAKING WASTE OF TIME QUEST EVER!

Now that that is out of the way, Aff. Warlock. Used no demons. Used my dots but did follow the right and left. The dots carried but after like an hour the bags finally blew and I got the credit. The special action bar you get is from the quest before that's why it goes away.

For all you locks out there getting frustrated with this one - I am affliction and every time I had to switch bags I simply used Soul Swap. I did not bother with any spells other than the three main dots (Agony, Corruption, Unstable Affliction) and spammed Malefic Grasp until the guy yelled at me. Was able to complete this easily in about 74 seconds.

Just did w/ my ret pally and after 4 times of defeating bag w/out credit and reading all the posts here i turned off all my seals and made sure no DoTs used, it finally worked. I just watched for the debuff on the target healthbar instead of watching for him saying left or right. Also I did make sure the bag was at 100% before starting attacking it. Hope this helps someone

K, here is my take on the damn quest.

AoE shots hit all sorts of bags around you, not just yours! SO, when you kill your bags, any bags next to you that are EMPTY OF STUDENTS will be damaged and waiting for you to kill them! All this other bad behavior is because there are empty bags being wailed on by one of your hits, DOT, spells, etc.

Solution. PICK A SET OF BAGS THAT IS EMPTY NEXT TO TWO STUDENTS ON THE OTHER BAGS.

As a hunter using a bear tank, I found the best thing for getting though this buggy nightmare of a quest without hours of frustration is to just dismiss/passive your pet and do it yourself. It takes a bit longer, but definitely worth it.

It definitely seemed to be AoE attacks that were causing this quest to bug out for me. Once I stopped using them it went fine. I still completed it using DoTs, so they don't seem to be a problem. From what I can gather my bear was using his AoE and tagging the bags next to the ones I was attacking, and this caused the quest to bug out.

On a side note, I've done about five quests at the Tian Monastery and two of them have bugged out so far. If you're not going for Loremaster or something it's probably better to just straight out avoid this place.

I did this quest as a ret pally and failed may times. Later, I got an idea and did the following procedure:

I choose only one side i.e. I attack only left or only right bag
suppose I take the left bag, when the Xann shouts left, I attack the left bag with all I have including dots
when Xann shouts "right", I stop attacking and wait until he shouts "left" again and attack the left bag again
the disciples attacking the bags stop for a while before switching bags, take their action as a cue to start or stop attacking the bag

I don't know if it was coincidence or pure luck, it worked for me. Note that attacking one side of the bags will reduce hp from the other side as well. When one of the bags get to 0hp, other bag will also get 0hp also and the quest will be completed. This quest is buggy and frustrating (cost me hours before finding the right method). Please try my method and verify it if you've tried everything else and failed.

As a warrior, do the following:

1. As the previous poster said, use a post with a yellow emblem
2. As another poster said, start only with bags at 100% health
3. Pay attention to the bags Absorb Energy buff, and switch to the one without the buff. Ignore the trainers call
4. Switch bags with TAB/SHIFT-TAB
5. Devastate will stack on both bags even with the buff on it, so keep 3 stacked on both at all times to minimize armor
6. Don't use AOE

I have no clue what you were supposed to do in this quest... (actually, this whole series seems to be just stupid, what was up with the quest before this?) but the standard tactic of finding something nearby and beating it like it owes you money worked fine for me.

I just stood there and beat on one bag til it died, and the other one died at the same time, ignore his yelling, just go thru your rotation while watching tv.

Bugs still remain heavily with this quest. They have done nothing to fix it.

You need to be standing right in front of the bags if you are a caster.
This quest was completeted 3 times successfully for it not to give quest credit.

Best advice just don't bother with this quest, it will not stop you getting the jade forest quest achievements.

Sad but true, this expansion is without doubt worse than the other epic fail cata ..what on earth where these people thinking? this is for the asian market where 10 million of our players live? me thinks so..no wonder asian mmo's are epic fail outside of asia

Took me 3 times to figure it out.

Make sure to start on bags with 100% health, with no one else attacking them.

The ones closest to the instructor at the bottom of the stairs worked for me.

Note that the follow up quest ---> Flying Colors <--- Does not offer any reward for spell casters, priests, locks and druids; therefore you may want to skip this quest line unless you want the achievement for completing all of the quests in Jade Forest, or you simply want or need the XP... Or.... you need the belt ---> Ambermist Cord <--- offered for completing this quest.

IMHO, this quest is a PITA. Did it purely for the XP and achievement award.

As an arcane mage, my tendency was to stand back and blast. Do not do this. Get right up in front of the bags and fire and switch and fire and switch. After 2 failed attempts of standing several yards back, the third attempt right in front of the bags worked.

I was doing this on my paladin and I noticed that crusader strike was actually hitting all the bags in the area. That was news to me! (Had seal of insight too.) At the end I killed the bags but the quest didn't complete. So I just did auto attack and judge. For about 12 hours. Then a random warlock showed up and just started pwning everything in sight and for some reason the quest completed.

Just a few notes on what's crucial to completing this quest.

Direction doesn't matter. You do not need to face the Yellow circles in order to complete this quest. It will update to whichever bag you're fighting. What does matter however, and the most important thing I did to complete this quest, after trying multiple suggestions on this page - START WITH YELLOW, UNTAPPED, 100% BAGS. Starting fresh is the key. Everything else comes second. You will not get credit for grey bags. You will not get credit for starting on anything less than 100%.

My successful attempt, I also followed the direction of one of the monks that was next to me. I'm not sure how important this was to completion, but for transparency's sake I figured I'd include that bit of info.

Good luck completing this infuriating quest! :D

Most boring and frustrating quest ever. Had to do it twice, didn't use moonfire the second time, most DoT's were nullified with the debuff. With a 10k damage, 1.87 cast time wrath (resto druid), and the bags having 2.3 mil health, it's a long fight.

Got this on my third attempt, after having failed and used dots the first time. The second I was uber careful and just used LB and ES. Nada.

Third time I used LB only, and then for the last couple of K stood DIRECTLY in front of the bag and jabbed it with my staff.

I dunno if it's because ES gives it a debuff or what, but this worked for me on the bad underneath him (with the yellow ball facing as the post above says)

I did this Quest today and used my Warlocks spells the Demonology one where five imps are summoned and my harvest life spell and killed two of the bags at once and did get the completion credit. Fastest way for me since the LEFT! Right! Thing was not working out so well took me about half hour till I decided to finally try the spell! Don't be like me just kill them!

It doesn't matter when and how you hit the training bags (excluding some bugs mentioned above). You can make the quest faster if you follow the instructions of Xann, because Absorb moves from left to right. Everything you have to do is last hit the training bag to the death and doesn't matter how much it have HP and who's hitting it.

I read all the comments, and stood very close. However after about 30 minutes of trying different techniques, I could not complete this quest as a Boomkin, i think the problem was my weapon was a 3.6 second staff...

This quest is very bugged, and not easy to accomplish.

This quest is vague and after trying to figure it out on my own I came here.. after reading the comments I decided to abandoned the quest. It's a shame, I was really enjoying Pandaria. Very disappointed with this quest.

This quest can be quite annoying, both because of the confusion some people experience whilst doing it, and because these bags take a rather long time for a level 84-86 to kill.
To clear up any confusions, here are some tips -

Find a set of bags that are not being attacked by any other players or NPCs: if the bags are not at full health when you attack them, killing them will not count.
If you are casting a spell at one of the bags when the instructor tells you to switch, you do not need to stop that cast for fear of it being a waste of time: as long as the cast was started when that bag was still your target, you will still deal full damage to it.
Be prepared to spend a few minutes on this quest, particularly at lower levels and with weaker gear. This quest can feel mind-numbing-ly boring, but the the XP you get from it is still more than you would get spending an equal amount of time just killing things out in the woods.

I don't know if its bugged or not but I just did the quest today, all I did was attack the right one then the left one when it said to and it was completed. I didn't have to destroy the bags like before. Don't know if they changed it or what.

If you also did this quest first by mistake like me and can't see the follow up quest, don't worry, it's not bugged or anything, you just need go to Master Stone Fist and do Becoming Battle-Ready first.

With the new scaling of 8.0 be prepared to spend about 10+ minutes doing this quest. The bags have 75K health and on my 87 warrior I was hitting for 125 and 253 crit, needless to say it took a very long time.

But, it seems they removed the fact that you need to start with full health bags. After 5 minutes I switched to bags that were almost destroyed by NPCs and I got credit for it.

I thought I was bugged at first, I was expecting my action bars to change and be taken over by the quest like the quest step prior to this one. It does not; you do not get the Monk abilities to use on the target bags - just use your own abilities or spells like you would on any mob.

As a fury warrior (at the time of this comment, all fury attacks are AoE) this quest was an absolute nightmare and almost made me just switch zones. I just randomly hit tab + keyboard smashed abilities until this quest completed. Hopefully this helps someone.

If you are a CASTER, you can use your instant spells in the bags and right click to melee them... no need to really ''kill''. Just a few damages in the right order.
