The thugs that the player eavesdrops upon have the following conversation:

Thug 1 says: Did you... Did you meet her?
Thug 2 says: Yep. She's for real.
Thug 2 says: She wanted me to tell you lugs that she appreciates the job that we did for her on the Furlbrows. gave me a pile o' gold to split with you all.
Thug 3 says: See her face? Is it really...?
Thug 1 says: Whoa, what do we have here? Looks like we have ourselves an eavesdropper, boys.
Thug 1 says: Only one thing to do with a lousy, good-for-nothin eavesdropper.
Thug 1 says: DIE!

Then thugs then attack the player. Upon returning to the questgiver, a Stormwind Investigator is interrogating a homeless citizen.

Stormwind Investigator says: You were standing right here! What the hell did you see? Speak up!
Homeless Stormwind Citizen says: I... I didn't see nothin'! He... he died of natural causes.
Stormwind Investigator says: Natural causes? Two bullets in the chest and his shoes are on his head. What kind of natural death would that be?
Lieutenant Horatio Laine says: Doesn't look good, rookie.
Lieutenant Horatio Laine says: This was an execution. Whoever did this was sending a message.
Lieutenant Horatio Laine says: A message for anyone that would dare snitch on these cirminals.
Lieutenant Horatio Laine says: It would appear that poor Lou readlly did put his foot...
Lieutenant Horatio Laine says: In his mouth.

I was having trouble getting credit for Eavesdropping. It only gave it to me when I killed all four thugs. Other people were crowding around trying to do the quest as well. When I listened and we all killed thugs, I didn't get any credit. So do this in a group if there are others waiting... or try to do it while no one is there.

Walk past the guys. Wait for them to finish the discussion per Xicon post above. Don't bother trying to hide to eavesdrop. They will then attack you. Kill all 4 of them; they have only about 74 health so killing all 4 is about the same as killing 1 or 2 enemies at this level.

Example of health for enemies:
Level 10: 198
Level 11: 222
Thugs: 74

I kited these guys to the front where the quest givers were to see if you can see who shoots/kills the guy, it just changes to the next scene :(

I had an issue during beta where I got credit for eavesdropping but when I went back to the cottage Horatio was not there. I tried going back to where he originally stands and he didn't have the turn in for me. I went back, dropped the quest and tried again with no luck. I was finally able to turn in the quest by logging out and back in to the game and when I came back in Horatio was standing there with the quest turn in at the cottage.

Thumbs up to ?Blizzard for this amusing questline. I know it's a tribute to CSI type shows, which is strange to see in a fantasy world, but the guy that wrote the script for this questline deserves a pat on the back imo!

FORM A PARTY!

I tried this quest at least half a dozen times with no success; too many other Pandarans trying to do the quest at the same time. I was starting to get seriously pissed at Blizzard when, finally, someone had the brilliant idea of forming a party; lo and behold, we all got credit on the next go!

Paladins: Get close enough to hear the first words then back off a bit or walk around the corner. When they get to the part of the conversation where they notice they have an eavesdropper, throw your shield to take down at least 3, then use Judegement to take down the 4th. Easy Peasy!

With CRZ, this quest is a pain to finish. It seems as if everyone and their brother quests in Westfall and since you have to kill EACH and EVERY one of the thugs, this quest takes considerably longer.

The "farmhouse"

The farmhouse is NOT the house Lou is standing in front of, even though that seems to be the "house of the farm". The farmhouse is the larger of the two, barn looking.

You don't have to hide anywhere, just go to the back of the barn. The thugs become visible only when you're pretty close. Just stand and listen. When they're finished, they'll attack you. Kill them, and you're done with the quest. Then a murder happens ...

Extremely ennoying quest, when others especially those high levels, who has no business here killing the four before you can. When you need it, party up and don't be a jerk. You could be later on raiding with the same person, who is your healer or tank :)

I've done this quest quite a few times, and just today I noticed a pattern. As we all know, cross-realming makes this quest hard to complete, because they always pick someone other than you when they attack - and you don't get credit unless someone in your group is the target.

What I noticed is that the thugs pick their target alphabetically. This means that if your name begins with an A, you have a higher chance of being targeted. If your name isn't first in line here, try to group up with one of the A's.

Remember that you also have to have the quest for the thugs to target you, so using an alt with an A-name is a no-go.

Almost impossible to do at the moment on some servers with the amount of new players levelling human characters. There was about 10-12 people in standard levelling gear hanging around them when I tried, none of them accepting group invites, with lots more doing the quests leading up to it. Do yourself a favour and choose a different zone to level in, this is a huge roadblock and is necessary to continue questing.

Description

A couple of thugs recently showed up at the farm, causin' all kinds of trouble. I don't know where they came from or who they're working for, but I KNOW they're bad news. I may have overheard 'em talkin' 'bout subjects that might interest you.

If you're interested, you'll find the thugs back behind the farmhouse. If you get caught or killed, I don't know you. Never seen ya!
