(my experience on normal) Nitrogg Thundertower can be a pretty brutal encounter. In phase 1 he hits the tank pretty hard but as long as you move away from the mortars he throws you should be alright.
In phase 2 he rides to the front of the train car, mounts a turret, blows the walls away and sends Boomers and Grenadiers after you. His turret targets a single person with Suppressing Fire, get behind cover to avoid it. His turret has too much health to dps normally, so you have to loot the Boomers you kill to get a mortar. Hop into one of the turrets on the side, aim the cannon upward and shoot at Thundertower's turret. You can only carry one mortar at a time, so keep moving. All the while, the adds will start swarming the tank. Loot the dead Grenadiers and use the grenades to blow the adds up, keeping pressure off the tank.
After a few mortars, Thundertower will lose the turret and start phase 3. During this phase adds will start spawning like crazy. Keep using grenades and use your cooldowns to bring down the boss.

If you come here looking for which weapon and shield this guy has to go with the BoA transmog plate from the War Mill / Dwarven Bunker, look no further.

His Axe is Malevolent Gladiator's Cleaver and his shield is Primal Gladiator's Shield Wall.

CHALLENGE MODE TIP

The first phase of this boss involves fighting Nitrogg Thundertower in the cramped rear portion of the train car, during which the group should spread out to minimize the damage from the Blackrock Mortars and Blackrock Grenades that he casts.

At 60% health, he transitions to Phase 2, wherein he retreats to his Assault Cannon in the front of the car, and the sides of the train car open up allowing access to the middle and front portions of the encounter area.

One of the time consuming portions of Phase 2 involves killing adds, looting them and using Homing Shell on the Assault Cannon. Each shell does 25% of the cannon's health, so 4 shells alone are required to break Nitrogg out (or 3 shells and another 25% of direct damage to the cannon).

It's possible to annihilate the Assault Cannon with a SINGLE Homing Shell thus shortening this encounter SIGNIFICANTLY.
To do so, you need 1 Shaman, or 2 Hunters (a single Hunter works, it is just less effective and won't shorten the fight by as much).

A Shaman should be using with Charred Glyph.
A Hunter should use Deterrence with Charred Glyph.

Below are the steps to follow for this strategy:

NOTE: In theory from a Warrior should work the same way as , but this hasn't been tested, and it is unknown how many stacks of Slag Blast you can reach with this ability.

TL;DR version: Have a DPS attack the cannon at close range. When fire appears around the cannon, drop the Shaman should drop the glyphed , have everyone move into the fire, and have someone shoot the Homing Shell from the Blackrock Turret once there are 9 stacks of Slag Blast on the Assault Cannon. Kill the boss and remaining adds.

There are a couple of WeakAuras that can be helpful when executing this strategy.

To use them, you need to install the WeakAuras 2 addon, then do the following:

Type /wa in chat to open the WeakAura interface
Click New, then select Import
Copy the text in the following code box and paste it into the WeakAura import field, then click Done
Click the "Import" button on the confirmation in the middle of the screen to add the aura

Below is a WeakAura string that can be used to track stacks of Slag Blast on the boss, with a custom alert once 9 stacks are reached.

To modify the aura to work for a buff like Deterrence or Spell Reflection, do the following:

Change the "Type" to Aura
In the "Aura Name or ID" box, type the name of the buff (e.g. Mass Spell Reflection) and click "Okay"
Make sure the "Unit" dropdown shows "Player, and the "Aura Type" is "Buff"

Overview – At 60% health, Nitrogg Thundertower retreats to his Assault Cannon at the far end of the train car. Players must reclaim Blackrock Munitions from soldiers that pour into the area, and use them destroy Nitrogg's cannon, after which they may dispatch Nitrogg directly.
- Damage Dealers –
  Defeat Grom'kar Boomers to loot [Blackrock Mortar Shells], then enter a Blackrock Turret to heavily damage Nitrogg's Assault Cannon.
  Take shelter behind an obstacle when targeted by Nitrogg's [Suppressive Fire].

Assault Cannon
