I remember the gate that connects them being closed in Retail.

Edit: Yes both sides are connected now, the Gate is open. You can freely go from Live side to Undead side, I managed to do it and purify(?) the Hand of Naxxramas, altho I must say the timer was kinda tight, I'm Outlaw Rogue with all mobility talents enabled and I had about 60 seconds left after killing Rivendare and getting the way open, perhaps a slower class will not be able to do it.
