This recipe is learned from Dirge Quickcleave in Gadgetzan one you've done the Clamlette Surprise recipe.

I assume you have to be the appropriate level of cooking or higher to have it offered to you.

For those who have already completed the original Clamlette Surprise quest to learn Artisan cooking, and want this recipe for completist sake, I can confirm that you can pick this recipe up without it changing your rep with either the Bloodsail Buccaneers or any Goblin faction.

You will still need to be neutral with Gadgetzan though for Dirge to interact with you.

(and for those to whom this comment doesn't make any sense, I'm another Jazzrik-killer! ;O

Note that you this is BoP, so no making it for your low-level alts and mailing it to them (like I just tried!)

Edit: Sorry, should have said that the Clamette Magnifique taught by this recipe is BoP. So don't bother getting the recipe if your only aim is to get a food buff for your alts.

It's not really worth it to use this recipe to get to 300 cooking. My alt used more than 5 stacks of Zesty's at skill level 299 to get that last point! It would be easier (and probably cheaper) to use one of the recipes that starts at skill level 275.

If you had trouble getting the Zesty Clam Meat like I did for this quest, I would suggest going after the Tidal Striders in the bay at about 53, 42 in Tanaris. I didn't have much luck with the turtles, but found that the Strider's drop rate was about 80%. Kinda sucked to figure that out AFTER I got all the meat I needed from the turtles, especially when it took about an hour!

No need to worry about the cheese. The FP in the south of Tanaris, at the Valley of the Watchers, will have vendors who sell it. And the turtles DO drop the clams, it's not a great percentage, but it's not awful. The whole quest can be done w/o leaving Tanaris

Alright, so every Cataclysm cooking guide I've looked at online says to do this level 250-280 (after the bear kabobs). I just did this quest. I'm at level 277. This recipe is green to me. The bear kabobs is still yellow. So definitely do not bother going after this recipe if you're above 275 unlike the cooking guides suggest. Just keep doing the bear kabobs or steaks instead til 285, then go get the recipe for the smoked desert dumplings.

The quest Clamlette Surprise requires ****** NOT .

The quest text is very confusing...

Dirge Quikcleave wants you to get the following items:

10 Giant Eggs. You will find those on the Rocs wandering Tanaris or any other species of large bird. (Drop from Fire Rocs near to Gadgetzan at about %40 drop rate)

10 pieces of Zesty Clam Meat. You can find those in clams, naturally! (Found in clams dropped by the giants near Gadgetzan at about %20 drop rate)

20 pieces of Alterac Swiss. Get thee to a cheesery! ( <--- NO! )

Gather all of the items and return to Dirge.
Giant Egg (10)
Zesty Clam Meat (10)
Fine Aged Cheddar (20) ( <--- YES, Can be bought from Carmen Ibanozzle at Bootlegger Outpost, but NOT the vendor in Caverns of Time! )

As of 4.0.6 (Feb 20, 2011):

In order to obtain the quest:

1) You need to have learned Artisan cooking skill (225-300)
2) Then go to Dirge Quikcleave in Gadgetzan and speak to him to get the quest.

Voila. I tried talking to him before i learned Artisan while my cooking skill was 224/225 and he didn't show the quest, so I hope this clarifies it a bit more.

As mentioned elsewhere, it would be easiest to gather all the materials required for the quest before you talk to him.

SOUL-BOUND - Wasn't paying attention, as I flew all the way down, did the quest, turned it in, activated the Recipe and made a bunch up. Went to mail off 4-stacks to my other toons and couldn't = "Soulbound"! Can't AUCTION it either! If your doing it for Points try and get it ASAP! Insult to injury ... they were only "Green" for me to make. Hope that helps! - Cheers!

As of today, November 9, 2019 I could not get the quest at level 35 with 232 cooking. It finally appeared at level 40 with 232 cooking.

Dirge doesn't want Alterac Swiss anymore. He changed his mind. Now he wants Fine Aged Cheddar. Posted December 2022.
