Some observations:
The damage of each turret is spread across three small attacks at the end of the round, making abilities like

2 Turrets can be up at the same, all shooting the active enemy pet at the end of the turn.
Since patch 5.1, no longer 100% hit chance and cannot hit unattackable pets like diving or burrowing pets.
Switching the active pet does not despawn the turrets, they stay active and functional. Since patch 5.1, if the Gnome building the turrets dies, the turrets still remain active.
If an enemy pet is killed before the end of the turn, causing a new pet to be switched in, the new pet is not attacked on that turn, but only from the next turn onwards.
The turret continues shooting pets on the turn they are trapped, but even if this kills it they are still succesfully captured.
Summary:
The major strength of this ability lies in its reliability. Even with the patch 5.1 fixes, it's almost guaranteed to do its maximum damage.

Do not use this spell if your opponent has
Brittle Webbing
Brittle webbing will hit your pet for each of the turret's shots, making it deal a lot of damage to your pet, especially if you have multiple turrets spawned.

Has anyone noticed that sometimes this ability just seems to fail at random? Your character does the graphic like it's crying from losing a battle. I am having difficulty figuring out if this is due to an attribute of the enemy pet or of the ability itself.

The tooltip says "each turret lasts 4 rounds," but that does not include the round you build it, and it fires as soon as you build it, so you get 5 rounds (15 shots) of sweet sweet turret action. The buff shows "4 rounds" the round you build it, and the next turn as well.
Unrelated, but also important: As of 5.1, the turrets miss pets who have used
钻地
(or are similarly unattackable), which makes sense.

If the target pet is Mechanical and dies after one or two hits from this attack, the turret will stop MOMENTARILY while the Mechanical's passive activates. After the Mechanical is back to life with 20% health, the turret begins shooting again, hitting them for however many shots were not expended.
Ex:
Reaper Mechanical is hit with one turret shot and dies
Turret pauses
Reaper returns with 20% health
Turret fires last two shots
Turn ends

I missed out on capturing two rare wild pets because of this ability; it killed them before I could get a successful capture. If you want to capture wild pets, don't use this ability.

Looks like they changed this ability in 6.2 to just quickly deal the damage and not show the visual of a bullet hitting the enemy. Nothing stat-wise, just visual.
EDIT: As of today (7/7/15) the bullet visual is back, but much faster than it was before.

"Objects" can generally be categorised as a team buff that appears as a visual addition to the battlefield and that will remain on the field regardless of any pet deaths until they are either used as the ability states or are destroyed by any of the object destroying abilities or buff removal abilities. Generally, only one copy of an object per team may be created at a time and if a duration is not mentioned, the duration is otherwise infinite.
