Somber Dawn can be found running in a circle around the center of Deadwood Landing. Deadwood landing is the large island off the west coast of the Broken Shore.

Somber Dawn is a level 112 elite horse with the buff "Equine of Chaos" which causes its basic attacks to have a chance to inflict extra Physical damage and knock back enemies.

Edit:- I just checked using 野兽知识 and as of this writing (11th May 2017) unfortunately this black beauty is NOT tamable :( I hope it gets changed later.

This dark horse seems to me to be a quiet shout-out to one of the companies that they've used as a publisher. It could also be a simple palette swap of existing unicorn NPCs. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's downright beautiful, though, and I really hope this model makes it into our mount collections someday. The /mountspecial+spin he does as part of his attack set is stunning.

If you want him as a mount, you can try getting the Lucid Nightmare from the Puzzler's Desire. This is a ground mount with purple colouring instead of Somber's red, but beautiful as hell and worth the time obtaining it !

Currently the only beauty with that color combo and he/she is NOT tameable. Please, this need to change with BfA. Unicorns will be added to the stag family without him/her? No, please make it happen. Did I say please?

Well.. Looking for Somber Dawn at 7:19PM EST. He's not up. As of right this moment, I am still looking for him but he's not there. I am guessing that there is a spawn timer on him. I didn't think that there would as he was an Elite Mob and that is all.

I will keep everyone posted with my findings. I started to look for him around 7:15 PM EST.

Don't have to camp on the island, just look at your map whenver you think of.
Once a large green skull (referring to rare elite creatures) indicating "Somber Dawn" shows up, you have at most half an hour to find and tame it.
Even better, the skull moves on your map to help tracking this cute thing.
Even better, during this period, respawn time would be about 1 min.

Hunters, two words...freezing trap.

Of course, that doesn't mean others won't jump down on top of you 2 seconds from when you're just about to finish that tame and break it...but hey, welcome to the jerkier side of things. On a good note...be patient, and just do what I did and go tame him that 5 whole seconds later after he then respawns. Second time, I aggroed him a little under the cliffs in middle, making it harder to see under the tree line .

Edit: At this time, he does seem to have some bugs where he vanishes when you take ports, use your whistle, hearth, etc.. I have noticed other hunters having to recall him after using a port as well. He also will just randomly vanish while sitting idle, though this seems rare...where he goes, nobody knows! Most issues seem minor , submitted a bug report.

Somber Dawn is up on Burning Blade. I logged in, saw the corpse, and then it spawned almost on top of me. Trapped it and tamed it in less than 60 seconds of logging in! Go get your wicked awesome Unicorn today!

Tame was easy. In a very welcomed twist on the usual hunter grief where somebody kills the mob you're trying to tame, with this one you can tame the pet right out from under the mob trying to kill him. How refreshing! This beautiful pet comes as a tenacity pet (tank) but I have found that he dies pretty easily. No matter, will just throw frequent heals at him.

Just wondering if I have to have BFA to tame Somber Dawn. I'm reading some contradictory info and I just want to know if Blizzard really has such poor form as to force me to buy BFA if I want to tame this beauty.

Would kill for an unarmored mount version of this to go with the pet (not the lucid nightmare),I know there's a pvp one but I have no desire to pvp.

Good luck trying to tame this in BFA. Your own faction WILL one-shot this and /laugh at you (as well as send rude whispers) when you try. Here's hoping it re-spawns during the whole 3 hours my realm isn't busy.

I've noticed a strange bug after taming Somber Dawn; whenever I log out, he's not there when I log back in as if I've dismissed him and I have to resummon. No other pets do this. I've yet to see if this same issue happens when zoning into a dungeon.

EDIT: Not only does he despawn when I log out, but also when I take a flight path, when I hearth, when I zone into a dungeon, even when I mount and dismount. Sadly, I doubt this'll ever be fixed, as I've seen complaints from well over a year ago on the official forums and no blue response. Chances are this pretty pony'll just be a permanent resident of my stable and nothing more.

For any hunters attempting to tame Somber Dawn, here are some notes;

My experience

The entire process of actually seeing the spawn was over the course of at least four consecutive days, with checking every hour or so where possible
I spent three days in non war mode, less than a day spent in war mode yielded the spawn, so I would recommend war mode (your results may vary)
Somber Dawn will knock back and likely interrupt your first tame attempt and may bolt, so keep this in mind, freeze trap recommended, not to mention being knocked into other mobs resulting in aggression
Other competing hunters over the period I camped/kept an eye on it, there were maybe three/four other hunters also checking in occasionally (I am OCE)
I was able to tame Somber Dawn on two different hunters within the space of five minutes

Somber Dawn will show up as an elite skull icon on the Broken Shore map when it spawns (note: For me, I had to be zoned in Broken Isles/Dalaran/Broken shore for this to work, being zoned elsewhere the skulls did not show up for me
Somber Dawn will respawn after 60 seconds of being tamed or killed
Original name is retained

Not confirmed

Spawn lasts for a total of 30 minutes

I've been hunting Somber Dawn for about a week and just got him.

I wanted to clarify a few things:
1- freezing trap does work
2- he will attack you and your tame beast will stop, try again!
3- he does NOT show up as a rare on the map (at least for me)
4- he does NOT re-spawn 60 seconds after taming (at least for me)
5- he DOES keep his original name
6- he is WORTH IT! Absolutely stunning!

Camped this guy from around 4pm to 8pm: No spawn and lots of competition (not only hunters).

Next day, I login at 5am: He was already there. No competition.

Initial spawn (skull on map) takes several hours.
He respawns almost immediately while the skull is up. I tamed him twice and killed him in 2 minutes.
The skull is visible on the map from anywhere, to see if he's up.
The skull is visible on the minimap and moves, to locate its exact position.
Freeze trap helped a lot. He interrupts the tame with one of its abillities.

I recommend occasionally checking the map when there's no competition around (late evening's and/or early mornings).
Otherwise, use a macro or npcscan to be the first to catch him.

If you're using npcscan and you already killed and ignored him, you can re-enable its ID in the addon options in the "Ignored" tab

Tamed Somber Dawn today, now I've got Lucid Nightmare as mount with 2 beautiful Coursers following me around.

Somber spawned on Frostmane-EU right when I arrived at the island. A levelling Horde killed him so I was quite sad about that. However, he spawned around 30 seconds later again! Tamed him and voila.

No idea why he spawned so quickly after he got killed.

I saw someone ask what food to feed their Somber Dawn hunter pet, and the answer is 手抓零食. I guess this means keep your own fingers away from his mouth :P

As of now, it appears as though he is not tamable for lower level hunters even though Petopia indicates level range 12 up as it scales to hunter level. Unless there is a bug I don't know about, he is a ? Elite with 109k hp to my level 19 toon. /cries epic tears of sadness.

I read through the comments and because of that I was able to tame Somber on my first attempt looking. I checked tonight with WM off, he wasn't there. So I switched to WM on, few back, he was spawned. Froze him, tamed him. Gorgeous horse. Looks like a Friesian horse irl, which has been my favorite breed of horse since I was little. <3

I've seen it posted, but just wanted to confirm for any other hunters who covet this beauty: Early AM is the best time. I got mine on my hunter alt about 4 or 5 days apart, one at 4:21am and one at 4:42am. And my WM was turned OFF for both tames. Seems to be pretty reliable, from what I'm seeing.

Somber Dawn runs FAST. I mean REALLY FAST. Have that freezing trap at the ready, and it's a breeze.

So break out the coffee, or energy drinks... or whatever helps you stay awake! It's worth it, I promise. :)

EDIT: Just respawned again, about 10 minutes later, as I was writing this. So if you catch it early, you could tame two if you stick around.

2:00 pm game time. Didnt get my trap down. Kicked me back a few times but managed to tame while she reared up. So happy! Waited around for respawn. Didnt happen. Ill go back in a few hours.

12 hours camping this elite rare today (4 hours the night before)...have seen every rare elite spawn EXCEPT this one in that time (most 2 to 3 times). This seems deliberate/by design because I remember back in Legion killing this beauty constantly (when it wasn't tamable). Also, warmode does not seem to make a difference—half the time spent so far camping this was in warmode. I'm going to assume switching between warmode was hot fixed or something, recently*.

*When I switched to warmode and went back to Broken Shore the same rares were always up.

Is this rare bugged? I have camped for hours and have never seen it spawn, but saw all the other rares spawn multiple times. I really want to tame it for my hunter, but it seems it has been erased from existance.
